Blessing of the Throats February 3rd is the feast day of Saint Blaise, who was the Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia in the fourth century. Before being martyred, he is said to have healed a boy who was choking. Since the eighth century, Saint Blaise has been venerated as the patron of those who suffer from diseases of the throat. We pray in a special way for the protection from afflictions of the throat and from other illnesses. The blessing of Saint Blaise is a sign of our faith in God’s protection and love for us and for the sick. The blessing of St. Blaise is given by two candles held in a crossed position by a priest and pressed against the throats.
Msgr. Publius will give the Blessing of the Throats after each Mass on February 4th & 5th.

Blessed Among Us: St. Thomas Aquinas Feast Day January 28th When the young Thomas declared his intention to become a Dominican friar, his family initially kidnapped him and locked him in their castle in southern Italy. When this failed to dissuade him, they relented and set him free to pursue his vocation. Thomas’ initial studies gave no promise of his later eminence. While studying in Cologne he rarely spoke, thus earning the nickname “the Dumb Ox.” Only his teacher, Albert the Great, recognized his abilities and predicted that the lowing of this “dumb ox” would eventually be heard around the world. By the time he received his doctorate in Paris, Thomas was recognized as an unrivaled genius, and his services were in wide demand, both by the Dominicans and the Papal court. In 1266, he began his masterpiece, the Summa Theologiae, a vastly ambitious exposition of the Catholic faith in which he brilliantly adapted the philosophy of Aristotle in the service of Christian theology. The project was never completed. During Mass one day, Thomas had a mysterious experience that caused him to hang up his writing instruments, never to resume. When asked about his silence, he replied, “All that I have written seems to me like so much straw compared to what I have seen and what has been revealed to me.” “To one who has faith, no explanation is necessary. To one without faith, no explanation is possible.” - St. Thomas Aquinas

Exalted to the Heavens: The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord
February 2nd Although this feast is the Presentation of the Lord, there are three great entrances celebrated in this liturgy. The most ancient described in Psalm 24, is the entrance of the Lord, the king of Israel, into the holy city, probably an annual liturgy that exulted in the covenant love be-tween God and the people. God enthroned in the Temple radiated so greatly a joy that even the gates of the city were exalted. Against this horizon, the liturgy speaks of a poor couple entering the Temple area, carrying a tiny child. They present their first-born to give thanks and to fulfill the Law. Only Simeon and Anna recognize the Lord of Glory coming into the Temple. In the Incarnation, the King of Glory has come to set up a tent of flesh and blood. Mary is the new gate: she, and with her, all flesh, are exalted. Just as the ark, entering the city, lifted up the heads of the gates, the Son of God, entering into humanity, raises up that humanity to the heavens. By the time the Gospel of Luke was written, the Temple had been destroyed. The loss of the Temple, site of God’s dwelling place among human beings, was devastating to early Christians and to Jews. The author of the Gospel here guarantees that Christ is the font of holiness for all flesh, so the Lord has not abandoned us. Rather, in Jesus and in the Holy Spirit, the presence of God journeys with us as with the Israelites passing through the desert towards the Promised Land. Looking towards that kingdom, we rise up to receive the Lord of glory who came as a little child. - Kimberly Hope Belcher

The Church in Latin America inspires all to "Share Your Faith"
The Church in the United States has a long history of sharing our faith in Jesus Christ with the people of Latin America and the Caribbean. In 1965, the Bishops
of the United States created the Latin America Committee and an annual national collection to support the work of the Church in Latin America. This year marks the
fiftieth anniversary of its creation. We also recognize the tremendous benefit of having our Latin American brothers and sisters in the Church and the revitalization
their fervor brings to the faith. In addition to offering our help and support to the Catholics of Latin America, we have much to learn from them.
Today’s 2nd collection will benefit this cause.
