The Now Institute is an intensive cross-disciplinary urban research and design program dedicated to contemporary urban issues and design proposals. MORPHOSIS/ CAP-HAÏTIEN NOW / HAITI NOW Senior Researcher 10/2013 - 10/2014Under the leadership of Thom Mayne & Eui-Sung Yi (Morphosis & UCLA Now Institute), I worked as a senior graduate researcher on the intervention planning for the economically struggling city of Cap-Haïtien, Haiti. This work was carried out over one year between Los Angeles and Cap-Haïtien and was supported by UNESCO, Haiti National Government and Cap-Haïtien Mayors Office in order to produce a development master-plan.

LONGFORD REGIONAL WATER SUPPLY SCHEME SITE ENGINEER 06/ 2012 - 10/2012A large 10,000m3 cast in situ concrete reservoir, 20km of trunk mains and associated valves and works were the main components of this 3,000,000 euro water supply scheme. As a site engineer my duties involved partial overseeing of concrete works and line works, including quality control, international standards records, clients representatives consultation and value engineering designs and proposals.
MALLOW BALLYVINITNER REGIONAL WATER SUPPLY SCHEME SITE ENGINEER 09/2010 - 08/2011My 12 month role in this contract was as one of three contractors site engineers to a 2,900,000 euro water supply scheme, including 16km of large diameter water pipeline, construction of three pumping station buildings, large concrete pump house and all associated works. Duties included preparation of method statements, implementation of construction documents, measuring of works, liaison with city authorities and landowners.

The Cap-Haïtien Now research team comprised of fourteen researchers investigating the city of Cap-Haïtien, Haiti under the six headings of Natural Environment, Built Environment, Infrastructure, Economy And People/ Culture.
From this data we arranged our development strategy and intervention plan which promoted;1. Preserving History 2. Cleaning the River 3. Improving Slums 4. Growing Food 5. Updating Infrastructure
This required clear problem formation and solution strategy within these areas of intervention.
The Development Plan was then produced by seven researchers all taking responsibility for differing aspects. Cleaning the River and Upgrading Infrastructure were the primary area of my responsibility at this point in the project. This collaboration will lead to the publication of the Cap-Haïtien Development Plan.

The design for this Elementary School, Crèche and Special Care Unit stem for a much larger landscape strategy I developed for a five acre site in suburban west Dublin. The strategy of landscape integration is based on the French landscape architects Gilles Clement’s observations of meadow grass cycles and a rethinking of the current “Suburban Lawn” as a sustainable “ Urban Meadow”. The design consists of a series of new urban layers on the park, the new meadow creates a soft datum across the site while the school is housed in two oak pavilions, obliquely joined by a double height atrium.

Meadow Vs. Lawn The average American spends $800 per year maintaining their law, including lawn mowing, fertilizers, edge trimming and all other lawn chores. In the US there are over 50 million lawns , accounting for around 30 million acres of land. If planted with crops each of these spaces could each generate around $2000 of income or $100 million dollars. Instead these lawns waste water and pollute the environment through cutting, fertilizing and pesticides.
Stop, Lawns are Unsustainable.Why Meadow? “The Garden meadow is a profound rejection of the more recent past in particular of grass mowing”1 Apart from meadow being sustainable, humans have a genetically encoded preference for Savannah like territory.

A mixed use public housing design for inner city Dublin, the form of this building was decided by the vectors which influenced it.
Firstly there was transport and connections, that is the four streets which surrounded the block, and then a desire to increase connections within the block hence the raised interlocking streets.
Secondly came the influences of the 30 units, which were to be a mix of one, two and three bedroom apartments and town houses, some being designed as work/live units.
The goal was to design a solution that allows occupants live in an apartment with the comforts of a house. That is; Street Access, Private Garden, Dual Solar Aspect, South Light (as Dublin is cold!)
This was accomplished by designing two story duplex apartments with a stepped section. These types were stacked in rows A/B/A/B which allowed A types use their apartment roof as a garden, while B types had private gardens on the roofs opposite their living spaces, accessed by walkways. This sequence terminates with a row of low three bedroom town houses to the south which had stepped gardens to provide privacy from the street. In addition a row of three story live/work units are situated off the east west pedestrian street.
The tall spaces to the south contain large retail stores and upper levels house community facilities. The lower two levels toward the middle of the block house adequate parking for apartments and retail units.

Located in Willowbrook, South Los Angeles, the influences and aspirations of Urb_Urbia were very similar to the Jameson Lane Development in Dublin but on a much larger scale.
As a busy nodal point the forces acting on the site were very influential in forming the architecture. The development was situated at the intersections of the 105 Freeway, Imperial Highway and South Wilmington Ave and the busy transfer point for the LA Metro Train Blue and Green lines.
In addition to the complexities of a busy and noisy site, the mixed use development requested multiple government facilities, retail space and 200 residential units.
The strategy was to elevate the residential units to the upper perimeters and roof of the development. The units were to be concrete shells which owners could develop as personalized lots, this elevated vantage allowed the houses access and influence of the vibrant community below.
The lower floors of the development are designed for retail and big box stores including a medical facility and sheriffs station. Two elevated pedestrian streets form the spines of the commercial areas. A north west street contains the big box stores ,while a covered east west street contains bars, restaurants and nightlife.

The “Projectionists House” is a developer driven design of multi - family homes where a clever sub division of the lot allows maximum profits while generating a contemporary Georgian row housing typology. For this 1/2 acre site in West Los Angeles the lot is divide in three 30ft wide lots, the maximum sub divisions under zoning code. Under zoning law each lot is then allowed a primary house and a secondary rental unit, belonging to the main property. This opportunity to further divide the lot lead me to examine mews type servant houses found along the alleyways of the Georgian section in London/Dublin and the Trinity Houses of Philadelphia. The final design was a main house which was a steel and glass house, sheltered from the street and side by cast concrete walls. At the side of each house is a pool and terrace area, the rear wall a projection screen. To the rear of the main house beyond the pool and below the projector screen the section steps down one story to reveal a private submerged mews quarters. This three story town house opens to a submerged filter pond to the east and large garage doors to the alley at the west.

A simple depth variant of four vacuum form panels aggregated in a carefully controlled sheet logic, allow the canopy to illuminate the models as elegantly as a drape of fabric while generating a jarring energetic backdrop. As the canopy swoops towards the floor a split in the sheet and a custom wrapped panel allow the models navigate through the folds of the backdrop. For this project I teamed up with Kaveh Arbab, and Andrew Akins to design and construct a canopy backdrop for the F.A.S.T. (Los Angeles) Fashion Show using the given theme of “Muse”. Alongside fashion show directors Jen Lee and Samara Al-Jumaily and lighting/ staging coordinators Astro lighting we created a cantilevering canopy of white plastic panels, each individually back-lit with a color changing LED which was programed to operate with the sheet logic of the panels.
