This Power Point is a modified version of that presentation designed to

I have divided BIM into three categories, and each year

take a look at what AEC professionals are doing. BIM 1.0

is the level that most are using BIM, the creation of

paper drawings, renderings and animations. BIM 2.0

looks at how BIM can be linked to analysis. BIM 3.0

deals with simulation based upon the BIM project.

BIM Adoption

BIM Products: Revit, ArchiCAD, Digital Project (Catia), Bentley, VectorWorks, Tekla

CAD took 15‐20 years to replace hand drawing. BIM will

replace CAD in 1/3 that time, amazing. The blue circles

indicate when the charts were created, the blue circle,

current adoption is tracking the prediction.

BIM is moving faster that the guidelines and standards can help guide the users. Many of the

organizations working on guidelines are volunteer operations that move very slowly.

Conflicts between guidelines will make life difficult. Owners are just realizing they must set

guidelines if they are to get ‘downstream”

It could be debated that there is no difference between analysis

and simulation. The

definitions above separate analysis from simulation. The “dashboard”
