Define the project BIM goals Client Goals

• Identify the importance of using BIM from the Client's perspective. • Define the goals for future use of the BIM data?

Design Team Goals

• Improve the working relationship and coordination between design team disciplines.

• Use 3D data to improve quality, with fewer issues in the field. p q y,• Categorize the "information" to be collected and redistributed.

BIM Project Execution Plan ("BIM PxP")

• Codifies the goals and objectives for using BIM on the project. • Every project is different, and every BIM PxP is different as well. • Provides both a map (for direction) and metrics (for measuring progress)

Houston Revit User Group Meeting - April 28, 2010BIM with Associate Design Firms and Consultants

6

• Provides both a map (for direction) and metrics (for measuring progress) throughout the project.

Define the project BIM goals Deliverables • How will the Owner, Contractor, or other stakeholder use the BIM model?

- What are the expectations for the model content and re-use? A l h ld t i d?- Are any placeholder parameters required?

• Are AutoCAD DWG files required deliverables? - If so, are there any special conventions required? , y p q

DWG version? Layers, Symbols/Blocks, Text Height, etc.?- What types of exported views are required?

Plans? Elevations? Details?

• Are PDF files required deliverables?

• Will the project be phased? - Will separate "Document Packages" be required?

(coordinate with potential "Bid Packages"). - Phasing/sequencing of occupancy needs to be a consideration

during the early design phase

7

during the early design phase. - Will "Document Packages" be merged at some point in the project?

Page 8: BIM with Associate Design Firms and Consultants...2010/04/28  · BIM i h A i D i Fi Houston Revit User Group BIM with Associate Design Firms and Consultants Donald Franklin, AIA BIM/CAD

Identify key BIM considerationsModel Files

• Determine status of any existing conditions files. I th f t l ( ) CAD BIM?- Is the format analog (paper), CAD, or BIM? Or is it a hybrid of 2D AutoCAD and 3D Revit files?

- How will the demolition be documented? - All connected ductwork and substantial equipment modeled in 3D.q p- Is laser scanning feasible (consider obstructions above ceiling). - Site 3D model with terrain/finish grade and 3D underground piping.

Identify key BIM considerationsModel Files

• Rule of Thumb (non-scientific): 1,000 SF of buildout = 1 MB file size. Att t t i t i i di id l fil 200 MB- Attempt to maintain individual files < 200 MB.

• Names of all model files shall be consistent and NOT be changed during the project. p j- A file naming scheme should be established for all disciplines.

Client_Building_Scope_(Level)_Firm_(FirmNumber)

• Discipline models should be separated from one another to gain full• Discipline models should be separated from one another to gain full advantage of collaboration tools available in Revit and Navisworks.

Page 13: BIM with Associate Design Firms and Consultants...2010/04/28  · BIM i h A i D i Fi Houston Revit User Group BIM with Associate Design Firms and Consultants Donald Franklin, AIA BIM/CAD

Identify key BIM considerations Linked Models

• For linked models use the "Overlay" Reference Type, NOT "Attached".

• Use Shared Coordinates for positioning- Coordinate the use of "Origin-to-origin" or "By shared coordinates". - Consider establishing a "Project Master Model" to maintain model

positioning and to aid in "publishing" and "acquiring" sharedpositioning, and to aid in publishing and acquiring shared coordinate systems between models. - Is a "Campus Master Model" pre-existing for positioning?

- Include a small "X-Y-Z" axis marker in each file for realignment of linked files accidentally moved.

• Never "Unlink" a Revit model. - Potential for dimensions to be permanently deleted

Houston Revit User Group Meeting - April 28, 2010BIM with Associate Design Firms and Consultants

Identify key BIM considerations Model Views• Working views

- Primarily used for modeling.

• Plot views - Contain annotation and detail elements.

• Create a specialized set of "Coordination Views" in the Project Browser. Each model contains a series of consistent views for the sole purpose of controlling the visibilityfor the sole purpose of controlling the visibility of linked models from other disciplines (using "By Linked View" in Visibility Graphics).

• Dedicated set of "Export Views" in the Project Browser. - Visibility is preset for consistent exports. - Do NOT export from Sheet Views

Houston Revit User Group Meeting - April 28, 2010BIM with Associate Design Firms and Consultants

14

- Do NOT export from Sheet Views (inconsistent origin points).

Page 15: BIM with Associate Design Firms and Consultants...2010/04/28  · BIM i h A i D i Fi Houston Revit User Group BIM with Associate Design Firms and Consultants Donald Franklin, AIA BIM/CAD

Identify key BIM considerations Sheet Views

• Consider how many sheets in each model. D t i th h i t l d ti l- Determine the horizontal and vertical model break up.

• Sheet Numbering g- Incorporate a unique designation for

Level and "Key Plan Area".- Sheet numbers for all disciplines

should consistently reference the Levelshould consistently reference the Level and "Key Plan Area", making it easier to finding information when viewing sheets across the different disciplines.

• Who is responsible for plotting which sheets? - Influences which model files contain the actual sheet views.

Identify key BIM considerationsWorksets

• Each linked file on a separate, dedicated workset. S t k t f "Sh ll d C " d "I t i B ild t"• Separate worksets for "Shell and Core" and "Interior Buildout". - For large projects, separate worksets per floor.

Design OptionsDesign Options

• If "Design Options" used, especially for bidding of Alternates, communicate these to Consultants so they are included in their files.

Shared Parameters

C t d di t ib t j t ifi "Sh d P t " fil• Create and distribute a project-specific "Shared Parameters" file to all users who will develop or modify family content. - The GUID's must match exactly, even if the names are the same!

Identify key BIM considerations Civil Considerations

• All existing site utilities under new building footprints should be d l d b Ci il t l iblmodeled by Civil as accurately as possible.

• Outflow locations for existing foundation drains should be modeled. These are often overlooked.- Since the majority of foundation drains are shown in Architectural

details, the Architect should model these drains when adjacent to the building.Civil will pick up the connections 5' 0" outside the face of building- Civil will pick-up the connections 5 -0 outside the face of building.

• Who will model railings on site walls? - Site walls: Civil Consultant.- Rails attached to the building face: Architect.- Rails not connected to the building: Civil.

Page 25: BIM with Associate Design Firms and Consultants...2010/04/28  · BIM i h A i D i Fi Houston Revit User Group BIM with Associate Design Firms and Consultants Donald Franklin, AIA BIM/CAD

Identify key BIM considerations MEP Considerations

• MEP Consultant can spot and model all fire sprinkler head locations. S i kl h d b i t R it d l d t th l- Sprinkler heads may be in a separate Revit model due to the large quantity of instances and the performance degradation resulting from the numerous "connectors".

• For roof drains, Architect will "spot" the drain locations and the MEP Consultant will pipe the drains, then submit back to the Architect for review and comment.

• Special consideration and coordination is required for exposed structure, ductwork, and other visible MEP items.

Streamline the process Project Teams and Stakeholders• Team communications is key. • Each team member's role and scope of work must be clearly defined.

Id tif k t h i l l d ( i d ) f h t k h ld• Identify key technical leaders (primary, secondary) for each stakeholder. • Provide a hierarchy of support

(Revit User, Revit Team Coordinator, BIM Manager). • Identify any training required ("New" or "Refresher"). y y g q ( )• "Architect of Record"

- Who creates/distributes the Construction Administration revisions?

S h d lSchedule • Major milestones.

- Document the deliverables for BIM at each project milestone. - Specify the requirements for each disciplineSpecify the requirements for each discipline.

• Collision detection (interference checking) sit-downs. • "Walk through the model" meetings.

Streamline the process Modeling Considerations

• Use MOVE to reposition placed wall instances - DO NOT delete the walls d l th i tand replace the instances.

- The effect of "replacing" walls is that all "hosted" MEP elements (such as wall-outlets) will become un-hosted.

File Exchange

• Keep the project "Central" files on each Local Area Network (LAN).

• Exchange of model files via project FTP (or similar) site.

• The frequency of file exchanges will be a schedule-driven activity• The frequency of file exchanges will be a schedule driven activity.

• Every file needs to be "Detached from Central" BEFORE posting.

Streamline the process Copy/Monitor

• Overuse of Coordination Monitor can significantly slow a linked model's f i R itperformance in Revit.

• Use the Coordination Monitor only when necessary. - Structural grid lines, edge of slab conditions g , g

Interference Check

• Collision detection using Navisworks can be beneficial.

• Use of collision detection should be done with the intent of being an ongoing "checking" tool only not a "wait and see" coordination toolongoing checking tool only, not a wait and see coordination tool.
