SAL - HIGH SPEED PERFORMANCE HIGHLY EXPERIENCED CREW WORKING SAFELY SAL - WORKING TOGETHER ON BHP BILLITON’S RAPID GROWTH PROJECT

Between June and August 2010, SAL performed four voyages from the ZPMC Yard in Nantong, China to Port Hedland, Western Australia for the BHP Billiton RGP5 project.

SAL mobilised four heavy lift ships in order to carry the total cargo of over 90,000 freight tons. The modules were destined for BHP Billiton’s Yandi mine site, 400km inland, where iron ore is mined and processed before being transported by rail for export via Port Hedland, the largest bulk export port in the world. This is the fi rst time that Australia has accommodated modules of this size that have been shipped over such a long distance (Nantong to Yandi).

Careful planning and a challenging lifting arrangement was required to load, gently stow, and discharge 3 x 10 modules and 1 x 8 modules per vessel.

The operation was conducted by SAL’s highly specialised crew with long term experience and training in the fi eld of heavy lift.

SAL is fully dedicated to a comprehensive Health, Safety and Environmental Policy. Since 2006, all vessels are certifi ed for OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 by the DNV and all newbuildings are equipped with an environmental passport.

TRANSIT TIME:

7.5 DAYS

With a high speed of 20 knots, the SAL vessels involved in this project managed to perform the voyage from Nantong to Port Hedland with a short transit time of only 7.5 days, allowing the time-sensitive project to stay on schedule. Upon arrival in Port Hedland the cargo was quickly discharged and delivered effi ciently and without any damages.

The modules, with a weight of up to 320 mt, were characterised by their substantial dimensions of up to 39.12 m length, 12.45 m width and 5.06 m height.
