Communication with the School In our very busy daily lives it is difficult keeping up with all the events and tasks each week and especially keeping up with the events and calendar of our school. We try very hard to keep everyone informed. Information comes home in various ways:

School newsletter (e-mailed)

School website – updated regularly (Newsletters etc.)

Sign board outside school (East End) PAC Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/BGMSRaptors/ Please check these regularly for information. On occasion, dates and times do change. If your e-mail address has changed please let the office know so we can update our records and ensure you get school information. If you are still are not sure please give the office a call and we will let you know.

Speech Fest and more… As we move through the later part of second term there are a few things to note over the next few weeks. Parent Teacher Conferences are coming up and we would like to see all parents come in a talk to your child’s teacher. Please note the letter coming home that indicates e-mail addresses of al the teachers in the school. Contact them directly for a conference time. Parent Teacher conferences will be held March 9th (2-7pm) & 10th (2-5 pm). Betty Gilbert’s annual Speech Festival will take place March 4th , Block B, from 12:15 – 1:30 pm. The contest will be held in the gym beginning just after lunch. Guest judges will evaluating the speeches and selecting the top 2 in Grade 6&7. Public speaking is a valuable skill to develop, but it is not without its challenges. We encourage students to step out of their comfort zone and embrace the challenge that a speech in front of their class and perhaps the entire school presents. Good luck to all!

Satisfaction Survey 2016 The Provincial Satisfaction Survey is unique in its scope, size and usefulness to schools. It gathers information from parents, teachers and students on topics related to school environment, safety, and achievement. The information is used for planning in individual schools and provides a district and provincial perspective. In the next week or so a letter will come home to parents of grade 7 students with web site location and an anonymous log in code to use. We encourage parents to participate in this survey, as the results are important in identifying and celebrating current strengths, as well as determining where the school needs to focus improvement. The surveys contain standard questions for the Province – The survey can be completed electronically and can be accessed on the Internet at http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/sat_survey. Any computer with an Internet connection can be used, and access to the e-survey is simple and secure. All that is required is a logon number that the school will provide to participants. Provincial, District and School Reports for previous years can be viewed at the same site, without a logon number.

The ’dropout seed’ may be planted in

middle school

Dropouts may occur in high school, but the seed is often planted in middle school. In other words,

many kids who drop out of school between ninth and twelfth grade started down that path in sixth,

seventh or eighth grade.

Studies show that, without intervention, a sixth grader is 75 percent more likely than his peers to drop

out of school if he:

Misses class 20 percent or more of the time.

Fails language arts or math.

Earns poor grades in a core course due to behavior issues.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that parents can intervene and steer middle schoolers down the

right path. Here’s how:

Expect your child to attend school every single day. They should only miss school if they are

ill or there is a family emergency.

Encourage your child to work hard and do their best.

Let your child know that you believe in them—and that you know they will succeed at whatever

they try.

Encourage your child to become involved in an extracurricular activity. Students with ties to

the school beyond academics are more likely to stay in school.

Work as a team with your child’s teachers. You all want the best for him.

Talk about school and what your child is learning every day.

Understanding the Pre-Teen / Teenage Brain

An One Evening Workshop with Gary Anaka: A dynamic public speaker, famous for his audience engagement, ener-

getic and lively sessions. His presentations are always filled with humour and optimism to support everyone, from babies to seniors,

to become life long learners, and to maintain a healthy brain throughout one's life. His practical suggestions, whether about how the

brain learns or how to stay healthy, can be applied immediately in any work or life situation.

If you want to help today's pre-teen/teenagers, then you need to begin with their brains!

Today's schools are full of children struggling with learning challenges, fragile brain issues,

boredom, or stress. How can teachers and parents unlock and engage the pre-teen/teenager's

"digital" brain? The brain is undergoing huge changes: it's a work in progress. Discover why the pre-teen/teenager’s brain is in biological turmoil

Why children need to leave every class with experiences, not notes

How dopamine drives their risk-taking behaviour

What pre-teens/teenagers crave most

Strategies to effectively reach and teach children, leading them to academic success and a life-long learning potential

Pre-teens/Teenagers have a great opportunity to influence the development of their own brains.
