Walking the WALL10

Now, it would be stating the obvious to say that people have been walking in Hadrian’s Wall Country for, oooh, well over 2,000 years or so.We feel we have to say something very important first. And that’s a word about our very own Countryside Code. { }

‘Every Footstep Counts’ really does mean what it says. Almost every-where you tread is archeologically important; earthworks and masonry may be visible but equally well they may lie buried alongside the path. Obviously, don’t walk on the wall it-self – and please don’t walk in single file (like sheep!), but rather side-by-side. It all helps to preserve the site.Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail is the long-distance footpath that runs through the World Heritage Site. 84 miles of glorious walking through rugged moorland, rolling fields and dynamic urban landscape.

Circular walks and shorter trails have been devised to cater for all abilities and take in many of the great sites and sights along the way. See Walk-ing in Hadrian’s Wall Country, or download suggested walks and maps from the websites below. During the winter months, parts of the Trail (especially near the Wall itself) suffer from erosion. Walks that explore the countryside, cities or the forts and museums are encouraged as an alter-native during this time.

Home to the Kings of Northumbria this magnificent coastal castle was completely restored in 1900. Collec-tions of china, porcelain, furniture, paintings, arms and armour. It is the home of the Armstrong family, and the building is all in use which maintains a welcoming lived-in atmosphere. A Royal Centre by AD547, the rocky outcrop has been occupied since the prehistoric period. The present fortress is the result of restoration and expansion over the centuries, a building of historic and general interest with the public tour passing through the museum room, grand kings hall, cross hall, armoury and the Victorian scullery. Live archaeology during July and August, complete with children's dig pit, a tea-room and gift shop.
