Music Angel Gets High Praise

After having a chance to try the Music Angel I can truly say I’m impressed. The sound is great and the convenience of a small portable speaker system with an internal rechargeable battery can’t be beat. It’s so versatile I’ve enjoyed using it while in my office, relaxing on the deck and surfing the internet. It

has turned my Ipad from a device that cuts you off from the people around you to a music source to be enjoyed by the entire group. The FM Radio reception is excellent and I'm putting on all my favourite music on a Mini SD CARD to be played on Music Angel. Thanks, Roy., Wasaga Beach

Most of us living in Wasaga Beach recognize the importance of visitors to our area, as they represent our only true industry.Tourism is important to us all, as it provides employment, encourages development and generates tax revenues. We have welcomed the millions of summer fun seekers who have flocked to Wasaga Beach for generations! With the exciting upcoming developments and many activities planned and the new vision for the beach front, Wasaga Beach is primed to encourage more and more summer visitors as we boast, “The Beach is Back!”In any discussion of the future of our area, the importance of being recognized as a year round destination is stressed! With this in mind, let’s spread the word of what Wasaga Beach has to offer this winter as we await the first big snowfall of the season.

Last year, winter visitors to Wasaga Beach were greeted with the best snow conditions in the Province. The Wasaga Snowmobile Club boasted about our groomed trails that brought sledders into town from far and wide. Skiers took advantage of our facilities and

network of trails that provide some of the best cross country skiing in the country. This winter Wasaga Beach will showcase some very exciting activities and events. Sledding on my Time is now providing Wasaga’s first snowmobile rental operation. They will be offering a wide variety of snow related activities, including guided tours throughout The Beach and area. On the long Family Day Weekend in February, residents and visitors will be treated to lots of fun in the snow as Snowman Mania has events planned from one end of town to the other throughout the weekend. Beach BOOSTER is very proud to welcome the Canadian Military to Wasaga Beach, as CFB Borden makes their first appearance at our annual winter carnival, with a fun and interactive demonstration to be held at Stonebridge Town Centre!Let’s all work together, residents and businesses, to welcome all of our winter visitors, reminding them of all Wasaga Beach has to offer them and their families in the winter months... and of course welcome them back to enjoy our World famous beach during our wonderful summer months!I wish all in The Beach and those reading this elsewhere, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and prosperous New Year!Joe Bickerstaff

Movie Review: Arthur Christmas (2011)

by Peter Frieday December 2, 2011

Release Date: Wednesday November 23, 2011Runtime: 1hr 40 minGenre: Animation, FamilyStudio: Aardman Animations , Sony Pictures AnimationDirector: Sarah SmithScreenplay: Sarah Smith, Peter BaynhamCast: Hugh Laurie, James McAvoy, Bill Nighy, Jim Broadbent, Ashley JensenThe problem with Arthur Christmas is that it is way too disingenuous to be considered a good Christmas movie because it falsifies the traditional Santa Claus personality and story in favor of high tech protocol and gadgetry without considering that little kids going to see this movie will get confused. In this movie the Santa story deviates from tradition and Santa is made to look like a jerk. The second problem with Arthur Christmas, is that it’s another in a long list of Christmas movies that fails to show the nativity aspect of Christmas. Welcome back to the secular world of Christmas filmmaking. Having said this, the animation is very good, the characters in the film are funny looking and there are some fun scenes but at the end of the day – you need a good story to make a good movie. In this modern version of the Santa Claus story , we have Santa ( Jim Broadbent ) with a battalion of elves and his oldest son Steve (Hugh Laurie ) flying around the world in a high tech spaceship to deliver gifts to all of world’s children on Christmas Eve. When they return from their mission they soon discover that they forgot to deliver one present to a little girl in England. Santa Claus and Steve dismiss it as being unimportant but Santa’s youngest son Arthur ( James McAvoy ) insists that they must go back out to get the present to the little girl. Arthur ends up heading out with his granddad Grandsanta (Bill Nighy ) who had a traditional sleigh with reindeer in hiding which they use to try to accomplish the impossible before the little girl wakes up on Christmas morning.Any parent that has a child that already understands the traditional Santa story may want to pass on this movie as you could feel uncomfortable trying to explain why Santa is being bad and why the spaceship story has never been explained – that Santa Claus is like a huge military operation with hundreds of tiny elves acting like James Bond. Is it really that cool to change tradition just to satisfy computer generated urges and an affinity towards thinking – all things modern ? So what do you want Sarah Smith ? You want to convert us all to your convenient story of how Santa gets his work done in one night. I know what you may be thinking. Come on Peter – it’s only a cartoon. It’s only all in good fun you may say. I say this. There are some stories you shouldn’t mess around with at all. Santa Claus is a childhood icon and hero. You never make a hero like Santa Claus look bad and you never mess with a long time traditional story. Big mistake. Perhaps first time feature length director and screenwriter Sarah Smith is attracted to oddity but it’s not cool when you deliberately make Santa Claus look bad and you mess around with children’s minds. The majority of kids have been raised to believe that Santa is wonderful and that he would never let any child down. With Arthur Christmas we have Arthur as the hero but this movie is no champion of Christmas.

Epicure's Easy Roast Turkey

Nothing says family dinner like roast turkey. It's easier to make than you think!

Makes 16 servingsCost Per Serving: 1.87Prep Time: 20 minutesCook Time: 3 hours, 30 minutes - 4 hours, 30 minutesIngredients14 – 16 lb (6 – 7 kg) fresh or frozen turkey (thawed)12 cups (3 L) prepared Epicure's Sage & Apple Stuffing1 - 2 Tbsp (15 - 30 ml) soft butter or olive oil1/4 cup (60 ml) Epicure's Turkey RubEpicure's Sea Salt, to tasteEpicure's Pepper, to tasteInstructions1. Remove giblets and neck from body cavity of turkey. Save to enhance broth and gravy, if desired. 2. Rinse bird thoroughly with cold water and pat dry with paper towel. Spoon enough stuffing into the neck cavity to fill without packing it in, as stuffing expands as it heats. Bring neck skin up over back. Sew opening shut or fasten with skewers. Use remaining stuffing to fill body cavity. Return legs to tucked position, and secure with kitchen twine. Save any leftover stuffing, and bake alongside turkey in Epicure’s Baker. 3. Preheat oven to 350° F (175° C). 4. Tuck wings underneath turkey, and then place breast-side up in Epicure’s Eclipse® Coated Roasting Pan. Rub butter over turkey and season with Turkey Rub. Coarsely grind Sea Salt and Pepper overtop. 5. Roast, basting occasionally, for 15–20 minutes per 1 lb (450 g). Depending on size of turkey, this may take anywhere from 3 1/2 – 4 1/2 hours. Turkey is done when drumsticks move easily at joints and Epicure’s Pocket Thermometer inserted into thigh reads 180° F (82° C). If turkey is browning too quickly, loosely cover with a foil tent. 6. Remove turkey from oven. Using a spoon, remove stuffing and transfer to a bowl and cover to keep warm. Cover turkey with foil, and let stand at least 15 minutes before carving. What would turkey dinner be without the trimmings? Keep half your plate for all those delicious, good-for-you vegetables side dishes: peas, carrots, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, and roasted root vegetables.Per Serving (includes turkey and stuffing) : Calories 730, Fat 34 g (Saturated 10 g, Trans 0 g), Cholesterol 270 mg, Sodium 460 mg, Carbohydrate 16 g (Fibre 1 g, Sugars 3 g), Protein 84 g.

Strange Illness

It was the doctor's last patient consultation of Christmas Eve. A mother came in with her young daughter and asked if he would examine her because she had been showing some strange symptoms, including a significant increase in weight, sickness most mornings and a number of strange cravings. He checked her out very carefully and eventually told the mother that her daughter was unquestionably pregnant. At which news she protested very strongly.'Don't be ridiculous, my daughter has never been with a man'The girl confirmed that this was true and added that she had never so much as kissed a man.The doctor studied the girl very carefully, then quietly stood up, walked to the window and stared out of it.Suspecting the worst the mother asked if there was something wrong.“No, not really" replied the doctor. 'It might just be a coincidence, but the last time this happened a bright star appeared the East.'

Shopping EarlyIt was coming up to Christmas and the Judge was in a jolly frame of mind."Now then, please tell me, what is the charge against you?" " I was caught doing my Christmas shopping very early." replied the man in the dock."That doesn't seem like an offence to me. What do you mean by 'very early?"Well, your Honour." said the defendant, "It was before the store was open."

The Old Country Store

The old country stores are now mostly gone. But once, when Simcoe County’s farms were new, small communities grew up around the necessary trio of church, school and store. As early as 1860, there were over 4,000 general stores scattered across the face of Canada. Eight years later, at the start of the Second World War, the number of country stores peaked at 12,000. It has been all downhill since. The typical country store had counters on each side and shelves along the walls. They held groceries, tabacco, dry goods, wallpaper, harness and paint. There was hardware, boots and shoes, glasses, dishes, patent medicines and pickles. Usually, general stores were two-storey affairs, allowing the storekeeper and his family living space above. Most had generous windows and a wooden porch with a railing. In the windows there would be displays of hats, dolls, cloth, tools, nails, and work shoes. Inside, the barrels, boxes and bags would sit next to the bins, tins and scales. And behind the counter, the storekeeper would wait on customers. The storekeeper was everyone’s friend. Male or female, the country store proprietor had many roles – banker, businessmen, accountant, politician, newsman, lawyer and diplomat. The storekeeper was the community host, providing a meeting place, supervising the penny candy cases and handing out the mail. With the end of the war in 1945, a new age arrived in the countryside. More automobiles, better roads, fancy new downtown variety stores, and dime stores – all combined to lure away the faithful from the humble general store. Still, they held their own well into the 1960s, open year-round to meet the needs of their neighbours. And then, one by one, they closed, their windows shuttered and dark.

Food Bank Donation: Carly's Angels donated $5,000.00 to the WBMFB on Friday morning during a Food Drive by 97.7 the Beach. Along with Food Bank volunteers, the 3 Angels making the cheque presentation are Marilyn Ruttan,, Debbie Stavinga and Kathy Macklin. Many other people from the community donated Food and Money to help the Food Drive reach its goal.

New Lions Two members of our community have been inducted into the Wasaga Beach Lions Club. The new members are CJ Donoghue, sponsored by Janice Campbell and Dave McAllister, sponsored by Jim Monroe. These two new members have now joined the 1.3 million men and women in 206 countries around the world. They have joined the service club to help raise money for Lions projects, help individuals within our community and have a fulfilling and fun experience along the way. God Loves Drunk People Too!

It’s the week before Christmas on Mosley Street in Wasaga Beach.

A man and his wife were awakened at 3:00 am by a loud pounding on the door.

The man gets up and goes to the door where a drunken stranger,

standing in a blinding blizzard,is asking for a push.

"Not a chance," says the husband,"it is 3:00 in the morning!"

He slams the door and returns to bed.“Who was that?" asked his wife.

"Just some drunk guy asking for a push," he answers.

"Did you help him?" she asks."NO, I did NOT, it's 3am in the morning,

it's bloody cold and snowing like crazy”!

"It’s Christmas” says his wife!I think you should help him, and you should be ashamed of yourself!"

"God loves drunk people too you know." The man does as he is told,

gets dressed, and goes out into the blowing snow.

He calls out into the dark, "Hello, are you still there?"

"Yes," comes back the answer.Do you still need a push?" calls out the husband.

"Yes, please!" comes the reply from the dark.“Where are you?" asks the husband.

"Over here on the swing," replied the drunk.

The season is upon us; the club volunteers have worked hard and steady getting those trails in shape. They have put up the stakes and signs to keep sledders on trail and headed in the right direction. The groomer stands at the ready, waiting for the word, to pack the fresh fallen snow into a smooth highway that will take us on an adventure. Snowmobilers have great memories; we remember those winters with copious amounts of fallen snow, and forget the years when there is little. Having read our last article, our sleds are waiting for that 1st ride, a ride we know will come, just when is the question. It is like Christmas Eve to children, the excitement of that 1st blast of a province wide storm, that crisp Northwest air coming off the bay…bringing that all important lake effect bliss and expectation of the season start. For now we will do what we sledders do: Hurry Up... and WAIT!

Hurry Up...and WAIT!

Snowmobile Chemicals, Lubes and CleanersSnow Goer magazine shows how to use the right chemical, lube, and cleaner … and how to use it right. Almost all snowmobile repairs involve the use of a lubricant, solvent, sealant or chemical of some type. Fact is that there are a lot of these products available, so how does a person know which is the most effective or safest cleaner or chemical for a particular repair? Here are common products that you might find yourself reaching for the next time your sled needs some TLC. We consulted with a few oil and chemicals experts and used our own experience to compile this information. As always, if you’re unsure about how, when or where to use a product, read the container for specific instructions or contact the company that made or sold it. WD-40 Know this… No shop is complete without a can of WD-40 or similar product. From displacing water or cleaning grime off a bellypan to penetrating bolt-sticking corrosion, this juice has thousands of uses. Products like WD-40 use triglycerides (fatty acids) as the main lubricant. Almost all snowmobile repairs involve the use of a lubricant, solvent or cleaner. Do… keep a can of this handy at all times. Its uses are endless, including removal of sticker residue. Don’t… use WD-40 near clutches, brakes or other components that you don’t want to be slippery. Brake Cleaner Know this… Brake cleaner formulas vary by manufacturer, but products that contain acetone are most effective. Most brake cleaners dry quickly without leaving residue so they won’t cause slippage on clutches and brakes. Do… use brake cleaner to remove brake dust and clean up components. Be cautious with it on rubber, but generally speaking, it won’t damage seals or O-rings. Don’t… use near windshields or delicate materials and plastics. Brake cleaners as a family are dangerous to use on finished surfaces because they will dull the finish and make clear plastic cloudy.

The Way Wasaga Was with Joe BickerstaffWith the popularity of snowmobiling catching on in the late 60’s and early 70’s, there was all kinds of optimism in Wasaga Beach that finally we had come to a point where we could truly be a four season destination. We had it all with the snow, the hotels that lined the beach and river and all within an easy drive up the 400 from Toronto.Hotel, bar and restaurant owners rushed to winterize their establishments and advertised “Open All Year” for the first time in Wasaga’s history. The Nottawasaga River seemed to freeze completely every year, providing a smooth and fun “throughway”, allowing access to most points in town. Hotels welcomed sledders into their dining rooms and beverage rooms with great meals and live entertainment. Motel rooms were occupied with snowmobilers and parking lots lined with cars and trailers. Once visitors unloaded their sleds, these snow machines provided the only means of transportation necessary for the rest of the stay in Wasaga Beach. Riverfront establishments like the Dyconia Resort, The Nancy Villa, The Allistonia Hotel and The Apollo were just a quick zip up or down the frozen Nottawasaga, while even the famous Windjammer Room of the Capstan Inn on the beach opened to entertain the devotees of this new winter sport.Wasaga Beach became known as The Snowmobile Capital of Ontario as enthusiasts from all over south and central Ontario discovered our town as true Winter Getaway. Close enough... but far enough to provide the fresh air, the openness and of course the much longed for snow! To serve the sledders, Wasaga Beach boasted first class dealerships for most of the major snowmobile manufactures. Bing Jowett’s Four Seasons Sports sold Arctic Cat sleds and grew to be able to boast that they were the biggest Arctic Cat dealership in Ontario. Yes, the sign stated... “Ontario’s Largest Cat House”! The Wasaga Beach Winter Carnival attracted even more folks as special events were held in the centre of the frozen river, under the Main Street Bridge. Radar Runs and thrill riders jumping ramps added to the fun. Whipper Billy Watson hosted his famous Snowarama from Wasaga Beach.Although we don’t get the use of the river in the winters of today as it does not seem to freeze as it did in the past, the Wasaga Snowmobile Club provides us with some of the best maintained marked snowmobile trails in the country! Wasaga Beach is snowmobile friendly and we and our visitors can ride sleds almost anywhere on our local roads that connect us to the trail system and of course, the beach.Follow us in beach BOOSTER and on our popular blog to keep up to date on the many snowmobile related activities happening though the winter months this year. beach BOOSTER wants Wasaga Beach to once again be The Snowmobile Capital of Ontario! Let’s encourage safe, fun sledding in town this winter and remember to welcome our winter visitors! Attached photos: Wasaga Beach Winter Carnival, mid 70's.
