Battle Born Bulletin Affiliated with the National Federation of Republican Women April 2012 President’s Message… Maureen M Karas I would like to begin this month’s message by thanking you, Active Republican Women of Las Vegas, for your hard work and many volunteer hours that contributed to the success of the Clark County Republican Party’s Caucus, Lincoln Day Dinner and Convention. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed by me, your board, the party and the many conservative clubs here in Las Vegas. Enjoy the sense of accomplishment. Now, it is time to take a deep breath, roll up our sleeves and get “active” on our number one goal in 2012 – MAKING NEVADA RED. In February, I had the pleasure of attending the Southern Hills Republican Women’s (SHRW) general membership meeting where President Daryll Ann Carter and Campaign Chair Lynn Armnaino told me about their club’s campaign plan for getting Republicans elected in November. Having successfully trialed a Voter Registration Drive during the entire month of January, SHRW’s campaign committee decided a more comprehensive strategy, including “getting-out-the-vote”, is needed. To this end, they invited me to their next committee meeting, and now I have been to two! Although “The Plan” is a work in progress, I will be sharing it with the ARW board for their consideration, input and adoption at our meeting on April 2nd. You know what they say, “imitation is the highest form of flattery”. The plan has five main components, each with a timeline and representative of different opportunities for volunteerism. It all begins with Voter Registration, something that can be done right away. Many of you, like Eleanor Mills, have a lot of experience with this, so feasibly we could execute this part of the plan very soon. Second is the strategy to expand the club volunteer base. ARW’s Campaign Chair Ellie Ahern already introduced a volunteer sign-up form, and several of you completed it at our March meeting. To get the form , print and complete, see page 9. The third component is club campaign funds. Here ARW is ahead of the curve. Your board budgeted funds for this purpose and is now considering how to disperse those funds. Fourth, is the establishment of club liaisons with campaigns. Realizing that our members like to work for candidates they choose, this provides an opportunity for them to be the club intermediary with the campaign. This way the club campaign chair and membership can be kept abreast with candidate volunteer needs. The last point and perhaps key to our success in this election is the get-out-the-vote campaign. Briefly this includes getting neighborhood organizers, developing talking points for our volunteers to use, circulating Republican slates complete with the non- partisan races and contacting voters through phone contact, letters and walking. ... President’s Message.... continued

There is so much more this program has to offer; I have only given you the highlights. Hopefully, I have peeked your interest and spurred you on to complete the volunteer form. I think you will agree there is something each and every one of us can do – out and about or in the comfort of our homes. Republican volunteers have the potential to really make a difference in this election, and MAKE NEVADA RED.

Before closing, I would like to remind ARW delegates to the Nevada Republican Convention that it will be held in Sparks, NV May 4th and 5th. There is a possibility the meeting could spill over into Sunday the 6th. Reservations should be made at the John Ascuaga’s Nuggett Casino Resort located at 1100 Nugget Avenue. Their telephone number is (775) 356-3300.

See you next month!

At the Boutique ...Be sure to stop by the Boutique table at the rear of the banquet room at our April 12th meeting. Michele and Judy have been busy shopping for the club this past month and will be displaying some exciting additions for sale to support the terrific goals of ARW!

Bring your cash or checks! ….and don’t forget to stock up on our “Vote Them Out” playing cards at only $10.00 per deck. These are sure to become a collector’s item.

ARW’s “ACTIVE” WOMEN DELIVER RESULTS ! When President Maureen Karas was asked by Clark County Republican Party to garner volunteers, boy did she deliver! Maureen appointed Barbara Altman, ARW Board, who also serves on the Clark County Republican Party (CCRP) Executive Board, to lead the charge. In a meeting Saturday March 3 at Charlie’s Lakeside, Barbara Altman recruited no less than 33 volunteers to handle March 10 registrations for the CCRP Convention at the Orleans Las Vegas. Barbara then grew that number to a total of 51 volunteers!

Of course, ARW members melt your hearts with their never-ending unstoppable dedication to our Republican cause. And several Southern NvFRW clubs joined the ARW CCRP volunteers. Please join us for a huge shout out thank you to ARWs: Barbara Altman, Maureen Karas, Melody Howard, Stephanie Reeder, Gwen Barrett, Alice and Bob Clark, Trish Trowbridge, Carol Long, Martha Kimpel, and Marty Beganyi.

Isn't it ironic? The food stamp program, part of the Department of Agriculture, is pleased to be distributing the greatest amount

of food stamps ever.

Meanwhile, the Park Service, also part of the Department of Agriculture, asks us to "Please Do Not Feed the Animals" because the animals may

grow dependent and not learn to take care of themselves.

ARW's Americanism program is proud to present another Liberty Day Constitution Lecture Series event at Kit Carson Empowerment School. On Tuesday, May 8th we will have a Constitution Lecture with the 5th grade class and Attorney Jacob Reynolds will be the speaker. The objective of the Constitution Lecture Series is to educate and inspire children as to the intrinsic value of the US Constitution, and how it has an impact on their lives now and in the future. We have local judges and attorneys willing to participate to reinforce the information covered in the classroom. Also, part of the learning experience includes an essay contest and the opportunity to win first, second and third place medallions. The time is yet to be determined, so look for more details soon.

Brenda Flank, ARW Americanism Chair

THOMAS JEFFERSON - A MOST WISE AND PROPHETIC MAN

John F. Kennedy held a dinner in the white House for a group of the brightest minds in the nation at that time. He made this statement: "This is perhaps the assembly of the most intelligence ever to gather at one time in the White House with the exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.”"When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe ." -- Thomas Jefferson "The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not." -- Thomas Jefferson "It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world." -- Thomas Jefferson"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them." -- Thomas Jefferson"My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government." -- Thomas Jefferson"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms." -- Thomas Jefferson"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." -- Thomas Jefferson"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants." -- Thomas Jefferson"To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical." -- Thomas Jefferson“Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stand around reloading.” -- Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson said in 1802:"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property - until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."

Following our successful drive to provide over 100 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to our troops returning home to Nellis and others recovering from their injuries at Ft. Carson, Colorado, we are turning our attention to supporting new military moms.

In May, the Cannery casino is sponsoring Operation Showers of Appreciation to provide new active duty moms or wives of E1-E5 troops with baby items. ARW will collect new baby items from the

attached list along with cash donations (please notice the patriotic buckets on each table at our monthly membership meetings over the next couple of months). Also, please consider volunteering your time on the day of the baby shower, May 12 2012.

This is another great way to support our troops and their families in our own backyard. Thank you women of ARW for your generosity!

You have heard about the spoken word, but have you heard about the hidden word? We are running a contest for ARW members only, with some terrific prizes. Since 2012 is such a very important election year to be well informed, and since your Board set priorities this year to increase membership participation, and most especially since our ARW Battle Born Bulletin is award-winning caliber, first prize each month will be a FREE DINNER at Spanish Trails Country Club at our ARW monthly membership meeting (a $30 cash value!) The contest is so easy. All we ask is to read Battle Born and submit your word entry. (Hint: the word will have a patriotic or political meaning.) 3. Hidden word entry must be received via email between the 1st and 15th of the month for that month’s meeting. The timestamp of the email will be used to determine if deadline was met.

The Literacy Committee has three requests: By Molly Governs, ARW Literacy Chair

1. Please consider using one small period of time to read to a class in any school or preschool. Contact Molly Governs by emailing [email protected] for some tips and short instructions. It has been brought to my attention that some companies will make small donations to the schools on behalf of employees who volunteer their time reading to our children in schools. Ask your employer if they do this.

2. Donations of new or gently used books for elementary aged school children are needed as gifts to children in elementary schools to start their own home libraries.

3. The ARW has published Literacy Cards with tips to parents and caregivers of young children on enhancing the joys of reading. Teachers, please feel free to ask for these cards also. Once again, contact Molly Governs via email ([email protected]) for large or small quantities of these cards to distribute throughout our Las Vegas community.______________________________________________________________________________________

ARW Board Meeting - March 5th 2012The Girl Scouts visited to thank ARW for our cookie purchases

What is a Regent? Today, we think of a Regent as someone governing a university. Nevada, indeed, has a Board of Regents that lead the Nevada System of Higher Education. However, the word originated in the 14th Century and regardless of the body involved it has always meant "to rule or direct." In our current times, it is obvious that we need strong women of sound principles "directing" our clubs, organizations, and country. The Nevada Federation of Republican Women (NvFRW) Regents Program

affords us a way to do this. By joining the Regents program you are joining other women who stand up and say we support conservative principles and are active in leadership. I consider it a kind of philanthropy for our country with all of our hearts attached. We each give a little but our resources pooled together will help NvFRW play a significant role in the 2012 election. Regent fees go to support annual leadership "schools" where our club leaders and interested members attend to learn about our political processes. It also supports

our local clubs helping to keep our membership fees affordable. As an NvFRW Regent you may attend (for free) hospitality receptions at the biannual NvFRW board meetings. I encourage you to join the NvFRW Regents program and help further our goals for leadership and membership growth. The NvFRW Regents enrollment form is found in this newsletter. Please contact me if you have any questions at 702/580-9982 or [email protected]. Together Everyone Achieves More! Kristene Fisher
