President’s Message… Maureen M KarasVolunteers, strap on your engines; the 2012 Election Season has begun.

Already ARW volunteers have been busy helping the Clark County Republican Party (CCRP) prepare for the February 4th Caucus. With 35 Caucus sites, much work has gone into creating the administrative packets for the Presidential Preference Poll Precinct Meetings. Also, some of our members have trained and are scheduled to work the Caucus as Precinct Leaders and Site Managers. Thank you to all who are participating.

For those of you wanting to get involved, and don’t know quite what to do, here are some things to consider.

Join the Clark County Republican Party Central Committee. The CCRP meets every third Tuesday at the Silverton Casino at 7 PM. The next meeting will be March 20th. Your registration and presence at two consecutive meetings qualifies you to be a voting member. Party business is conducted at these meetings. If you have ideas about the direction you would like the party to take, this is a way to make your voice heard. Membership in the CCRPCC can be a stepping-stone to getting elected to the Nevada Republican Party Central Committee. Elections for the NRPCC will be at the March 20th CCRP meeting.

"The many faces of human trafficking”Experts say it is a form of modern day slavery. It is the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the 21st century,

as a $9 bllion dollar a year global industry. Nevada is not immune to this troubling problem. Assemblyman John Hambrick is on a mission to stop human trafficking and he will lead the discussion on this topic.

We will learn what is happening in our own community and how it affects all of us. _______________________________________________________________________________________

Be a Clark County Convention Delegate. Delegates to the March 10th CCRP Convention will be elected in each Caucus Precinct Meeting on February 4th. Delegates will complete a registration form in their Caucus Precinct Meeting and pay a $40 Convention Registration fee at the Finance Desk before leaving for the day. Volunteering to be a Delegate enables you to participate in the Convention to be held at the Orleans and have a voice in creating our Party’s platform. Once at the Convention, you will be able to run for Delegate to the Nevada Republican Party Convention to be held in Sparks, NV May 4th and 5th. Nevada’s Delegates to the Republican National Convention will be elected from the Nevada Delegates. If you are interested in getting more active with the Party, becoming a CCRP Convention Delegate is a pre-requisite!

Volunteer for Candidates you would like to see get elected. Candidates not only need money, they need grass roots support. After March 16th, all candidates for office (federal, state, county and local) will be officially filed and in the race.

With so much attention being given to the Presidential Candidates, often our local candidates find it challenging to get volunteers. In order for Republicans to take the Nevada Senate and Assembly, we must do all we can to support these candidates. Your help in putting mailers together, making phone calls and walking the district is greatly needed. Some of the tasks can even be done in the convenience of your home. All you have to do is let the candidate(s) know you want to help!

Ellie Ahern has volunteered to be ARW’s Campaign Chairman. If you are interested in helping candidates, please let Ellie know. When Campaigns call her to get volunteers for various events they have scheduled, she in turn will call you to see if you can help. Ellie may be reached at (702) 366-5688.

Making Nevada RED in 2012 will happen if all of us make a personal commitment to schedule volunteer activities into our daily, weekly and/or monthly routines. Get involved today! Become a volunteer!

See you next month!

The Literacy Committee has three needs and requests:

1. Please consider using one small period of time to read to a class in any school or preschool. Contact Molly Governs by emailing [email protected] for some tips and short instructions. It has been brought to my attention that some companies will make small donations to the schools on behalf of employees who volunteer their time reading to our children in schools. Ask your employer if they do this.

2. Donations of new or gently used books for elementary aged school children are needed as gifts to children in elementary schools to start their own home libraries.

3. The ARW has published Literacy Cards (pictured below) with tips to parents and caregivers of young children on enhancing the joys of reading. Teachers, please feel free to ask for these cards also. Once again, contact Molly Governs via email ([email protected]) for large or small quantities of these cards to distribute throughout our Las Vegas community.

Caring for the American Soldier

by Diane Welch, Caring for the American Soldiers chair

I am happy to take over this outreach for our club. As a proud Air Force daughter, wife, and mom, caring for American soldiers has been a way of life and is near and dear to my heart. Our focus the last few years has been to support our deployed men and women. We will continue to throw our support behind these brave soldiers, but will also expend some of our energy closer to home to support those returning from deployment. Studies show that these folks are at elevated risk of unemployment and homelessness. Many need help transitioning to civilian life, and can use our support. We also have young military families in our community who may be struggling financially and for whom ARW can make a difference. As you can see, there are many areas where we can lend our club’s name and support, so we will have a new focus each quarter throughout the year.

Our first effort this year, as in years past, is to donate Girl Scout cookies to troops at home and away. At our last meeting we collected enough to purchase 45 boxes of cookies. This is an awesome start. Thank you for your generosity! ARW will be sending cookie boxes to deployed soldiers and also distributing some closer to home. If you know of a deployed military member or unit that could use a touch of home, please email me the information at [email protected] or call me at (702) 373-6522. Likewise, if you know of a struggling military member, family, or unit who may have recently returned from deployment, I would appreciate receiving this information.

I look forward to working on behalf of ARW to support the troops. I invite your ideas and your input. You will notice little patriotic buckets on your tables at each meeting to collect your donations. Please give generously to this worthy effort. I invite your ideas and input, and look forward to working on behalf of ARW to support the troops!

Kelly, January 5, 2012

I recently returned from Afghanistan where my company received care packages from the Active Republican Women of Las Vegas.  In recognition of your efforts, I have a Certificate of Appreciation signed of by the Company Commander to send or present to you.  Please provide me with a contact number or an address.  Thank you and your members for the support.

Respectfully submitted,

Gunnery Sergeant Richard Slider

FIND THE HIDDEN WORD CONTESTWhat’s the Word? …And What’s the Prize?

You have heard about the spoken word, but have you heard about the hidden word? We are about to embark on a new contest for ARW members only, with some terrific prizes. Since 2012 is such a very important election year to be well informed, and since your Board set priorities this year to increase membership participation, and most especially since our ARW Battle Born Bulletin is award-winning caliber, first prize each month will be a FREE DINNER at Spanish Trails Country Club at our ARW monthly membership meeting (a $27 cash value!) The contest is so easy. All we ask is to read Battle Born and submit your word entry. (Hint: the word will have a patriotic or political meaning.) The word contest comes right from the belly of our newsletter! Here are the details:

1. Read newsletter and make your guess on the word. The Hidden word is a single word (not an expression) and will appear at least five times or more anywhere in the newsletter.

2. One hidden word entry per member per month. The Hidden word must be submitted via email to [email protected]. Subject: ARW Hidden Word Contest.

3. Hidden word entry must be received via email between the 1st and 15th of the month for that month’s meeting. The timestamp of the email will be used to determine if deadline was met.

4. If several people submit correct answer, a winner’s name will be drawn at the ARW meeting of that same month. Winner must be present to win, or another name will be drawn. If no winner is present after five drawings, then we skip the award for one month.

5. Both Full and Associate Members are eligible. ARW Board members are not eligible. But only one free dinner per winner per year.

6. The prize is a free dinner at the next ARW Monthly Meeting of the next consecutive month. You must RSVP and we cannot postpone the award. Other prizes may also be awarded.

CONGRATULATIONS CHRISTINA ELA FOR WINNING THE HIDDEN WORD CONTEST IN JANUARY. ENJOY YOUR FREE DINNER AT THE
