Battle Born Bulletin Affiliated with the National Federation of Republican Women JANUARY 2013 President’s Message… Cherie Wood My first order of business as your new President is to express a heartfelt THANK YOU to all the members of Active Republican Women of Las Vegas for electing me to be your new leader these next two years. It will truly be an honor to serve and I hope to make the club proud. It is an awesome opportunity and one I do not take lightly. And with the extraordinary board I'm honored to serve with, all efforts will never go unappreciated! I also want to acknowledge with a huge Thank You to our out going newsletter chair, Iris Stone, whose vision and creativity have made our newsletter the most read throughout the state! We appreciate your caring transfer into the very capable hands of our new chair, Annette Barnes. And last but certainly not the least of all, another heartfelt THANK YOU to Mo Karas for her amazing leadership ultimately preparing my path to be so much easier!! 2013 will be an amazing and fun year---so needed after the devastating disappointment of this past election. As we regroup, I invite all of you to keep the focus on promoting our conservative message. The old saying "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" will be the driver of our message this year--Educate the uninformed and misinformed every chance we get! I'd also strongly encourage every one to join the Clark County Republican Central Committee! Go to clarkgop.net to sign up today and on your 2nd consecutive meeting, you will have the ability to vote for true Republican representatives, as well as vote on important issues for the party. To promote this continued cause, we will have great speakers in the coming months who will help us reach this goal. Education is the key and we must do all we can to help others understand the TRUE message of the Republican Party and the amazing women who keep it viable during this age of outrageous entitlements, restricted freedoms and big government intrusions in nearly every aspect of our lives! We must focus on keeping our representatives accountable while in constant search of new conservative leadership for the future of our party. No more legislators who want to just "go along to get along" no matter who they are and how long they've served. This is our promise... We will be watching. It is with great pride to lead you this next term and I look forward to your input as together we push forward in making a difference for the sake of our future! Caring for the American SoldierBy Diane Welch, Chair of ARW Caring for the American Soldier

As we look at 2012 in the rearview mirror, I hope all of our ARW members take pride in how much we have done to support the troops this past year.  As you know, we shifted our focus from soldiers overseas to those here at home.  In that effort, we collected and distributed Girl Scout cookies, supported hundreds of new moms through cash and baby supplies donated to Operation Showers of Appreciation, provided a large donation to the USO, and donated a truckload of Christmas toys and gifts for Nellis children and young airmen.  None of this would have been possible without the big hearts of our members.  You never ignored the red, white and blue buckets on your tables.  I was constantly impressed by the amount of your donations.  Your generosity made a difference and made ARW proud!  I have enjoyed being the Chair of supporting our American troops.

Beginning January 2012, I will be taking on the position of 1st Vice President for ARW.  However, there is still much work to do in support of our men and women in uniform.  Our returning troops face hurdles from many angles - economic, medical, psychological, transition to civilian life, and suicide, just to name a few.  We must keep up our efforts to support our military and their families.  This takes a dedicated person willing to collect donations in our patriotic buckets and seek out ways to support our military.  Please consider whether you are that person.  You may contact me for more information about this chairmanship at (702) 373-6522 or [email protected].  Happy New Year and God Bless our American Soldiers!

At the Boutique ...Stop by the boutique this month, before the

meeting begins, for the best selection of political merchandise.

Bring your cash or checks! ….and don’t forget to stock up on our Patriotic items.

These are sure to make great gifts.

Mobile Device Literacyby Molly Governs, ARW Literacy Chair

This is the second of three articles on safe Internet use and literacy. Using mobile devices in a wise manner also falls under an aspect of literacy in today’s electronic world. A mobile device can be anything that uses the Internet and software such as mobile phones, tablets, and gaming devices to name a few. It is important to take the same online safety measures used for a computer or laptop when using a mobile device. Below are a few tips.

1. RUNNING A CLEAN MACHINE. • Keep security software current. The latest mobile security software, operating system, and

web browser are defenses against viruses, malware and other online threats that are out there. This advice goes for any device on the Internet.

2. PROTECT PERSONAL INFORMATION• Mobile phones can contain enormous amounts of personal information. Use strong

passwords to lock a phone for protection against a lost or stolen phone.• Review the privacy policy of any app before downloading. Review what data an app can

access on your device such as location, social networks, etc. before downloading.• Give your mobile phone number out to only those you trust. Never give out another’s

number without permission.• Learn how to disable geotagging feature on your phone at http://icanstalku.com/

how.php#dicable

3. CONNECTION CARE• Be savvy about Wi-Fi hotspots. Public Wi-Fi hotspots are easily hacked. Be sure to adjust

the security settings on your device and limit who can access your phone.• For banking and shopping check that the website is security enabled. If the web address

contains https:// or shttps:// that means the web address has taken extra steps to protect your information. An address with just http:// is not security protected.

• When in doubt about a text message, voicemail, or email from an unknown person or address do not respond to it.

4. GOOD CITIZENSHIP AND MOBILE DEVICES• Send only texts that you would not be offended in receiving yourself.• Get permission first before taking pictures or videos of others with your phone, tablet or

other Internet connected device. Also let others know they need to get your consent before taking your picture.

Have you ever wondered what the # (hashtag) in Twitter does? Here is an explanation.from Melody Howard, ARW Legislative Chair

Would You Explain #gas and #bikeride?

Originally posted on DennisKennedy.Blog (http://denniskennedy.com/blog/)

The answer is: Yes, I’d be happy to explain my use of #gas and #bikeride on Twitter and Facebook. They are good examples of what are known as

hashtags. If you follow me on Twitter (@denniskennedy) or are a Friend of mine on Facebook (you know who you are), you will occasionally see

updates from me that look like:

#gas – Webster Groves, MO Circle K – $2.95, regular

or

#bikeride – today, 15 miles

I’ve been doing this for several years, as I’ll explain, as a Twitter experiment. They all start out as tweets on Twitter. After I linked my Facebook

account to Twitter, they are automatically posted to Facebook as updates as soon as I tweet them on Twitter.

So, what do they mean?

First, we need to talk about “hashtags.” Hashtags are a Twitter phenomenon, although they are used in other places as well. See the Wikipedia

explanation of hashtags.

Hashtags serve several purposes. I’ll illustrate this using Twitter as my example.

The most interesting purpose, at least to me, is they represent a form of self-organization to facilitate the search of tweets and an informal form

of tagging. People found that if they put a # symbol (pound sign or hash) at the front of a word (or set of words), it became much easier to use

Twitter Search to find tweets that were intended to be related to a topic. The hashtag term provided a focused subset of tweets intended to

address a specific topic. Many hashtags grow organically and arise out of events (#hurricane, #earthquake, #tsunami, et al.). In a short time,

people will include the hashtag in tweets as they post news, resources and other information about the event or topic. The hashtag term produces

more “on topic” tweets and reduces “noise” that you get with searches on the term itself.

To see how this works, do a quick Twitter search on “bears” and then on “#bears.”

This usage of hashtags is fascinating in the case of breaking events, and can help you evaluate “news” you get critically. These types of hashtags

can relate to almost anything (sports teams, TV shows, bands) and they tend to develop a quasi-officialness. If you want to see comments and

participate in the conversation while watching a TV show, you’ll want to search on #topchef rather than top chef.

A second purpose of hashtags is the “official” or promoted form of hashtag. It’s an extension of the idea of the first use I described. A great

example is a conference where the conference organizers will encourage people to use the official hashtag (e.g., #abatechshow) rather than other

variations. You might have even noticed ads that include a reference to an official hashtag. These hashtags work in the same way to help people

use the search function to find relevant tweets.

A third purpose of hashtags is a kind of “meta” usage. In these cases, the hashtag is used as a comment, often ironic, about the contents of the

tweet. For me, this harkens back to the early days of HTML when people would use non-functioning HTML tags to make comments (e.g.,

comment). Hashtags can be used in a similar way – #joking or #sarcasm. There are some classic hashtags that express frustration or other

emotions – #FAIL. Some hashtags can get very meta and comment on the tweet – “thingsnobodywouldsay.” In other words, they attempt to add

depth and nuance to a 140 character form of expression. It’s interesting stuff.

Which brings me to #gas and #bikerid. ...... to continue reading, click here

The American Medical Association has weighed in on the new health care package: The Allergists were in favor of scratching it, but the Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves. The Gastroenterologists had sort of a gut feeling about it, but the Neurologists thought the Administration had a lot of nerve.Meanwhile, Obstetricians felt certain everyone was laboring under a misconception, while the Ophthalmologists considered the idea shortsighted.Pathologists yelled, "Over my dead body!", while the Pediatricians said, "Oh, grow up!"The Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while the Radiologists could see right through it.Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing, and the Internists claimed it would indeed be a bitter pill to swallow. The Plastic Surgeons opined that this proposal would "put a whole new face on the matter".The Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the Urologists were pissed off at the whole idea.Anesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas, and those lofty Cardiologists didn't have the heart to say no.In the end, the Proctologists won out, leaving the entire decision up to the assholes in Washington!
