do with setting free; restoringrelationships; returning what haspreviously been taken; giving peopleanother chance. What needs settingfree, restoring or returning in our time? The Queen gave some pointers. Shespoke of the importance ofneighbourl iness, of having a care andrespect for one another, of returning tothe values of loving, caring.

Our society is one where there is greatdiversity. Our neighbours may bestrangers to us because of their ethnicorigin or rel igious beliefs, and much elsebesides. Jesus spoke of jubi leehappening when we welcome thestranger, care for the vulnerable, setpeople free from whatever imprisonsthem. We might not al l make it into theGreat Hall of Westminster to see theQueen, but we can all celebratesomething of that Christian faith traditionwhich she embraces as SupremeGovernor of the Church of England, andjoin with al l others of different faiths andnone, by ‘loving our neighbour asourselves’, and joining in the fun of theJubilee.

Embracing the true meaning ofJubilee - Bishop Peter

At 1 0:30am on 20 March in the GreatHall of Westminster, a cohort of Yeomanof the Guard marched through theassembled crowd of Peers and Membersof Parl iament and took their place on thesteps upon which were set two thrones. At precisely 11 :00am as Big Ben struck,Her Majesty the Queen accompanied bythe Duke of Edinburgh, entered to afanfare from the trumpeters.

Speeches were made, the Queenrevealing her wit and humour, as shereceived the congratulations of the twoHouses of Parl iament on the occasion ofher Diamond Jubilee.

I t was an historic moment and I washonoured to be there. I was also amusedby the reflections of one or twoparl iamentary colleagues commentingthat, while they were not great believersin God or the monarchy, “didn’t we dothings well . ”

In these coming months, we shall al lexperience the celebrations of the RoyalDiamond Jubilee. Without question,Queen Elizabeth has served her nationand the Commonwealth withextraordinary commitment and loyalty. The Queen has seen the monarchy gothrough some rocky patches in her sixty-year reign, but she herself has remainedconstant to the well-being of the nation.

In straitened times celebrations arealways a good idea. Street parties andother community events have beenmarked with national milestones, particularly the longevity of kings andqueens, for centuries. They bringneighbours together, creating a sense ofbelonging and of community, which oftenlasts long after the bunting has beenpacked away.

As I sat in Westminster Hall , I began tothink about the meaning of jubi lee. I t’s to

Relive Easter

The Easter story came alive at BathfordSchool on the last afternoon of term, asthe children acted out the final week ofJesus' l ife with a team from St Swithun’sChurch. For the last supper we shared breadtogether made by Class 2, andwitnessed Judas' betrayal. As Jesus wastaken away by the soldiers class 6 sanga poignant song, and children returnedfrom a break to a colourful joyful scenewith the empty tomb. Class 5 girlsportrayed the shock of the women at thetomb, and after hearing the story of theresurrection the Reception and class 1children did Hebrew circle dances andClass 3 actions to Easter songs.
