You may perhaps never read this month’sBathford Bulletin as it may be under agrowing pile of political leaflets andmanifestos on your coffee table! Whilst weare in a time of uncertainty as a country inthe run up to the General Election, at leastwe already know who wil l take on the role ofleading our vil lage church.

Merciful ly the process of electing a new vicaris far less territorial and confrontational thanour Parl iamentary selection process.Nonetheless it has at every stageendeavoured to be transparent, and as far aspossible, to reflect the diverse views kindlygiven by church and vil lage folk who tooktime to complete a brief questionnaire lastyear. From the feedback received, a ‘ParishProfi le’ was written (concerning the churchand vil lage), adverts were place national ly.Applications were received and shortl isted,informal and formal interviews wereconducted by a panel reflecting the church,Deanery and Diocese and an appointmentwas made. . . . . . .

St Swithun’s Church is looking forward towelcoming its new vicar, the Revd JaneBurgess, her husband, Charles and sons,James and Sam. Jane joins us from HolyTrinity Church, Frome, where she is aCurate. Her welcome service takes place onWednesday 28th July.

Even in the absence of a vicar our church l ifehas continued to thrive. Many peopleenjoyed the lent lunches which raised £572(spl it between Bridgemead Day Care Centreand Médecins Sans Frontiéres). The FilmClub runs monthly on a Monday afternoon inthe church.

We feel certain that Jane wil l want to leadthe church team as we continue to serve thecommunity in practical ways. On July 11 thwe are holding a service on the Vil lageGreen and on 1 8th July the Big Lunch wil l beheld in the church. This forms part of theBathford Summer Festival.

In the meantime happy voting!

Village of the Year Competition– please play your partThings are moving ahead with Bathford’sentry to the Campaign to Protect RuralEngland’s Vil lage of the Year competition.BEFA+ is leading on our submission.

The competition is not just about howattractive our vil lage is. The descriptionstates, ‘. . . i t is about making the most of yourenvironment by demonstrating that thevil lage and its people are well cared for. Thejudges are impressed by tidiness but are alsoseeking a sense of community borne out bythriving societies, clubs and activities’.

We have been gathering information toproduce a written description under variouscategories and then the judges wil lanonymously visit between 1 June and 31July to see for themselves.

You can play your part in ensuring that thevil lage looks its best by picking up litter andkeeping the front of your properties tidy. Thejudges wil l also look at notice boards andjudge the ‘vibrancy’ of the vil lage by whatthey see on them. If you are responsible fornotice boards, please take a look at yours -and organisations, do update your postersand notices. Thanks.

Annual Parish Meeting (APM)Thank you to all the parishioners who cameto the very well attended APM last month.The council is also grateful to the vil lageorganisations that displayed information atthe meeting. The evening was divided into 3parts.

Firstly, parishioners heard presentationsabout the council ’s work and achievementsduring the past year. This was fol lowed by abrief talk from PCSO Vicky Jones who hadnews that arrests had been made for theshed burglaries in this area.

Then June Brassington, from BANES LibraryService, gave an informative talk about thecurrent services offered by libraries, on-l ineinnovations for reserving and renewingbooks, the Libraries West network and thereview of l ibrary services which includes theprovision of the mobile l ibrary service. Acoffee break fol lowed the talk, which allowedparishioners to see the displays and questionparish council lors and the Ward Council lorinformally about matters of concern. Thefinal part of the evening gave parishionersthe opportunity to ask questions and makecomments on any matters of concern whichincluded such issues as the proposal toreplace the cricket pavil ion, provision of thenew school hal l for community use and waysin which to improve the appearance of thevil lage. Ful l minutes of the meeting wil l bepublished on the parish council ’s website indue course.

Bonfires – to ensure that bonfires do notcause a nuisance to neighbours, residentsare reminded to fol low these guidel ines:-

- I t is an offence to create smoke whichbecomes a nuisance to neighbours andthose living nearby;

- Bonfires should be as far away fromtrees fences and buildings as possible andsituated so that the prevail ing wind carries

smoke away from the buildings;

- Only dry material should be burned,green or moist material creates the greatestnuisance;

- Avoid l ighting a fire in unsuitableweather conditions – smoke hangs in the airon damp, sti l l days. I f it is too windy, smokeblows into neighbours' gardens and windowsand across roads

- Bonfires should never be left tosmoulder overnight or unattended;

- Remember the dangers of bonfires andcare should be taken when children arepresent.

More guidance can be obtained online atwww.environmental-protection.org.uk

Notice Board – is there a volunteer whowould be wil l ing to refurbish the Dovers Parknotice board before it is moved to a positionby the post box on Dovers Lane? The workwould involve rubbing down andrevarnishing. Please contact the Clerk if youcan help.

BEFA AGMI t real ly is the 5thAnnual GeneralMeeting of BEFA(Bathford EnterpriseFor All) at 7:30pmon May 4 at theRoyal British Legion

The shop has become a valued asset,providing an ever expanding range of goodsand services and something extra. I t hasthat special friendly atmosphere whichencourages shoppers to l inger and chat and,increasingly, settle in the café corner togossip (and even work, though quiet it isnot!).

Al l this has been achieved through the wil l ingexertions of a committee and team ofvolunteers and very greatly due to the hardwork of Paul Faulkner, our first Manager.

His knowledge, enthusiasm, andcheerfulness have helped move the projecton from a tentative beginning to anestablished part of vi l lage l ife.

Paul wil l soon be retiring as manager but,happily, wil l not be losing touch with us.

Bathford Enterprise For All was a careful lychosen name. Now that the shop isestablished, it is hoped to widen the scope ofBEFA. There are real enthusiasms forprojects (social and environmental) and localpeople keen to embark on these. BEFA+, al inked group, has also been active and wil lupdate us at our meeting.

The AGM this year wil l be l ively andinteresting and the outcomes of importanceto us all . We wil l be offering huge thanks toPaul and outl ining future plans and ideas.

Look out for your invitation and mark yourdiary!

The Bathford SocietyFollowing the last talk on the 26 Apri l , therewil l be no talks unti l September 201 0.However, there wil l be a long awaited eventin May - the publishing of our new localhistory book.

The original local history book, 'Bathford,Past & Present' written by Godfrey Laurenceand published 25 years ago has sold out.Over the past eighteen months or so I havewritten a revised and up dated version and,after much checking, it is now with thePrinters. I am indebted to Fae Hall for al l hersuggestions and encouragement and toSteve Mackerness for al l his work inincorporating proof-reading edits, producingthe index, and general ly preparing it forprinting.

All being well it should be on sale in theBathford Vil lage Shop during May. Look outfor posters nearer the time giving the actualdate of sale. I t is in a sl ightly larger formatwith about twice as many pages, with 90il lustrations - many in colour, and includesthe results of more recent research as wellas recording the changes over the lastquarter of a century.
