WELCOME

We are celebrating the 35th

running of the Breeders’

Cup, in which Prince Khalid

achieved the notable feat of his fifth and sixth

homebred winners, and seventh victory in

total. Extraordinarily, both Expert Eye and

Enable are fourth generation homebreds

descending from deep families steeped in

success at the very highest level.

We are delighted to welcome EXPERT EYE

to our roster for 2019 following his power-

packed performance in the Breeders’ Cup

Mile Gr.1. This is a horse with all the right

credentials to appeal to commercial and

owner/breeders alike - he has the looks, the

conformation, the precocious two-year-old

speed and the class to win a major Group

1 on the international stage. Above all, he

hails from a wonderful Juddmonte family in

which the first three generations of his dam’s

side are homebred. As a son of Acclamation,

he represents a new sireline for Juddmonte

and we look forward to presenting him to

breeders.

2

j u d d m o n t e sta l l i o n s

Such was FRANKEL’s brilliance as a

racehorse, it was inevitable that he would

be required to work that bit harder to prove

himself as a leading sire on the global stage.

However his statistics bear witness to his

ability to keep making history. In 2018 he

achieved his 20th Northern Hemisphere

Group winner, faster than any other stallion

in the history of the Pattern. Only his own

phenomenal sire Galileo has more Group

winners from crops foaled between 2014

and 2016. There were three new Group 1

winners in 2018, and Frankel finished as the

leading Royal Ascot sire with three winners

including Without Parole in the St James’s

Palace Stakes Gr.1. Meanwhile Cracksman’s

victory in the Champion Stakes Gr.1 meant

he became the first horse since Frankel to

achieve back-to-back wins on Champions

Day. These two performances echoed the

brilliance of his sire, making him Timeform’s

highest-rated horse in both 2017 and 2018.

There is much to be said of KINGMAN’s

emergence as a young sire of note. He

made a Royal start with his two-year-olds,

particularly Calyx’s extraordinary victory

in the Coventry Stakes Gr.2, with the form

franked by those behind him as the season

progressed. Four further stakes winners and

23 winners in total followed, including the

exciting Autumn Stakes Gr.3 winner Persian

King. The second in the race, Magna Grecia,

subsequently went on to win the Futurity

Trophy Gr.1. In the sales ring Kingman’s

progeny has been very well received - he sired

the top colt at the Goffs Orby Sale, sold for

€850,000, and at Tattersalls Book 1 he had 21

lots sold for an average of 315,000gns and a

top price of 1,050,000gns.

With two new Group 1 winners in 2018,

OASIS DREAM demonstrated that class is

truly permanent. No other stallion sired more

top-level winners over sprint distances. Three-

year-old Polydream, Group 3 winner and

Group 1 runner-up as a juvenile, won the Prix

Maurice de Gheest Gr.1 in blistering style for

the Wertheimer brothers, and two-year-old

Pretty Pollyanna followed suit with victory

in the Prix Morny Gr.1 for the Gredley family

before an admirable fourth in the Juddmonte-

sponsored Cheveley Park Stakes Gr.1 and

third in the Fillies’ Mile Gr.1. Oasis Dream had

five further two-year-old stakes performers

including Listed winner Stage Play and Group

2 placed Sand Share and Shine So Bright, so

there’s plenty to look forward to in 2019.

BATED BREATH’s percentage of winners

to runners in 2018 was superior to that of

any other British-based stallion in the £8,000

to £15,000 price bracket. His progeny have

inherited their sire’s tough, consistent and

competitive streak. There is no better advert

than his dual Group-winning daughter

Worth Waiting bred by Whatton Manor

Stud - winner or second in all her races before

running a very good fourth in a fast-run Prix

Vermeille Gr.1 on Arc day. Bated Breath’s

yearlings once again sold strongly, including

a €240,000 colt at the Goffs Orby Sale, a filly

sold for 140,000gns at Tattersalls Book 1 and

colts sold for 175,000gns and 160,000gns at

Tattersalls Book 2.

Prince Khalid has long held the belief that a

stallion’s career is shaped and influenced by

the quality of broodmare that he covers. In

short, family matters! Our sincere thanks to

all those breeders past and present that have

been vital to the success of the Juddmonte

stallions. We look forward to assisting you

with your nomination requirements for 2019.

HASILI

The curtain fell on one of the most absorbing

acts the bloodstock world has witnessed

when, in March 2018, Hasili died at the age

of 27.

To wander through the Juddmonte paddocks

while she lived would not necessarily have

allowed a casual observer to select this

titan of the breeding ranks with any great

certainty. A small, neat, blaze-faced bay,

Hasili did not drop too many physical hints

at her genetic prepotency. For that, however,

we have the racing records of the many

good horses who continue this remarkable

bloodline and ensure that her name will be

forever writ large.

Foaled in 1991, Hasili was a grand-daughter

of the Cheveley Park Stakes winner Sookera,

who was purchased in Juddmonte’s infancy

from her breeder Robert Sangster. In her sole

racing season for Dermot Weld, Sookera

blazed a trail which could be matched only by

Fairy Bridge, who shared top billing with her

in the rankings for Irish fillies. The legacy each

would leave at stud could not even have been

guessed at back in 1977.

By the Aga Khan’s Derby winner Kahyasi

and out of Sookera’s winning daughter

Kerali, Hasili was herself trained in France by

Henri-Alex Pantall and demonstrated both

speed and precocity by running eight times

as a juvenile, winning four races from five

furlongs to a mile, including the Listed Prix

des Sablonnets. At three she added more

j u d d m o n t e sta l l i o n s

blacktype to her record with two placed

finishes in Listed company, fully earning her

own place in the broodmare band at Banstead

Manor Stud.

Mated with Danehill on her retirement to

stud in 1995, Hasili at once proved a hit as

a broodmare. Starting with her first foal,

Dansili, it became increasingly apparent

throughout her breeding career that it was

the genetic blend of the Juddmonte-bred

Danehill with Hasili that was the winning

formula above all others.

Though never quite notching a Group 1

victory - he fell less than a length short, but

five of his full or half siblings subsequently

made up for that omission - Dansili could

easily stake a claim to be the most significant

of all his mother’s well-credentialed offspring.

The Group 2 winner went on to become

champion sire in France in 2006 - the same

year that Hasili was named TBA Broodmare

of the Year.

Pensioned in 2018, Dansili’s record extends to

21 Gr.1 winners (including With You in 2018)

which could yet be enhanced by members

of his final crops. Meanwhile his sons and

daughters are extending that legacy at stud.

Zoffany was the leading first-season sire of

2015 and Dansili’s list of notable winners as

broodmare sire continues to grow.

Where Dansili led, Hasili’s second foal, Banks

Hill, followed and, in racing terms, trumped

his achievements. Born two years later and

also by Danehill, she too was sent to be

trained by André Fabre. Having finished

runner-up in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches

Gr.1, she became her dam’s first Group 1

winner in the Coronation Stakes and then her

first of two Breeders’ Cup winners when –

Lasix-free – she routed her opposition in the

Filly & Mare Turf Gr.1 at Belmont Park.

Banks Hill returned at four to add the Prix

Jacques le Marois Gr.1 to her laurels, and by

that stage her year-younger sister Heat Haze,

by another son of Danzig, Green Desert,

had already notched the first of her seven

victories. Heat Haze’s best days were to come

in America where, having been transferred

from Fabre to Bobby Frankel, she was twice a

Grade 1 winner.

Hasili (second from left)

with her Gr.1-winning

daughters. Left to right –

Banks Hill, Heat Haze and

Intercontinental

5

j u d d m o n t e sta l l i o n s

Three fillies in three years for Hasili

yielded yet another top-level victrix when

Intercontinental emphasised the potency of

the Danehill cross. Her transatlantic career,

which culminated in victory over Ouija Board

in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf Gr.1,

was the perfect illustration of the soundness

of Hasili’s stock - both in body and mind.

Intercontinental raced until she was five,

competing on two continents in 22 races for

13 wins and seven places.

The tap of high-class winners from Hasili

was now in full flow and showing no signs of

being turned off. Cacique came next and, like

his full-brother Dansili, went agonisingly close

to claiming a Group 1 in Europe. A switch to

Frankel’s barn in America duly brought his

brace of Grade 1 victories.

Following a barren year, Hasili gave birth to

the fifth of her Gr.1 winners in 2003 when

yet another tryst with Danehill produced

Champs Elysees. Throughout a racing career

The name Hasili is found frequently in Juddmonte’s ‘Green Book’, etched on the pages of more than a quarter of the mares listed in the broodmare band

Dansili - the first of four of

Hasili’s sons to retire to stud

6

j u d d m o n t e sta l l i o n s

that lasted until he was six, he added another

three Grade 1 wins and a Grade 2 in the US

and Canada, having also won at Group 3 level

in France.

Along with Eight Carat, Hasili remains one of

only two broodmares to have produced five

Group or Grade 1 winners. The phenomenal

record of her sons and daughters stretches to

appearances in 63 Gr.1 races, in which they

won or placed on 43 occasions. At one stage,

three of her sons stood alongside each other

in the Banstead Manor stallion yard. Dansili

and Cacique - the latter having sired three

Group 1 winners despite well-documented

fertility issues - remain there in retirement.

Meanwhile, Champs Elysees, the sire of 1000

Guineas Gr.1 winner Billesdon Brook as well

as top-class stayers Trip To Paris and Harlem,

is gaining support at Castlehyde Stud.

The line is spread farther still through their

Sadler’s Wells half-brother Raise The Flag,

who stands at White Robe Lodge in New

Zealand, while Banks Hill’s son Ideal World is

at Mauritzfontein Stud in South Africa, where

he has sired the multiple Group 1 winner Smart

Call.

Closer to home, the name Hasili is found

frequently in Juddmonte’s ‘Green Book’,

etched on the pages of more than a quarter

of the mares listed in the broodmare band.

They include, first and foremost, her

daughters Banks Hill, Heat Haze,

Intercontinental, and the unraced Very

Good News (Empire Maker) and Responsible

(Oasis Dream), as well as Banks Hill’s Group

1-winning daughter Romantica.

“We’re incredibly lucky,” said Simon

Mockridge when paying tribute to Hasili

after her death. “Juddmonte families are the

absolute lynchpin of Prince Khalid’s breeding

operation, and she was the Queen of them.”

While a significant chapter in this

extraordinary dynasty ended last March, the

tale of Hasili is far from told. In legacy at least,

there is still a long way to go.

PASSING ON HIS TALENTSIf you want winners at an affordable price, then you could

do a lot worse than start by looking at Bated Breath. He has

had over 100 of them in his first three crops, and, as of the

beginning of November 2018, had the highest winners-to-

runners percentage (45%) in the year of any stallion standing

at between £8,000 and £15,000 in Britain with a minimum

of 50 runners.

There have been some smart ones in there, also, notably

Beckford - rated 113 by Timeform - Unabated (111), Worth

Waiting (110), Ekhtiyaar and Breathless Times (both 109).

Beckford won the Railway Stakes Gr.2 at the Curragh as a

two-year-old, and was also second in the Phoenix Stakes

and National Stakes (both Group 1s) on the same course. He

landed a $100,000 stakes race at Churchill Downs in April as

a three-year-old before getting sidelined. Beckford had cost

58,000gns as a foal and €55,000 as a yearling.

Worth Waiting landed a Listed race at Newmarket before

running out a clear-cut winner of the Prix Minerve Gr.3 at

Deauville. She then finished fourth to Kitesurf in the Prix

Vermeille Gr.1 at Longchamp.

Unabated, Breathless Times and Ekhtiyaar are all good

handicap winners, with the first-named also Listed-placed.

There have also been significant efforts from the likes of the

two-year-olds Space Traveller (second in the Prix Eclipse Gr.3

at Maisons-Laffitte), Viadera (second in the Anglesey Stakes

Gr.3 at the Curragh), Breath Of Air (third in the Doncaster

Stakes L.) and Could Be King (fourth in the Futurity Stakes

Gr.2 at the Curragh and the Killavullan Stakes Gr.3 at

Leopardstown).

Most of the aforementioned have excelled at short of a mile,

at least to date, but Worth Waiting - who is stoutly bred

on her dam’s side - really came into her own when tried at

around 12 furlongs.

Bated Breath himself was a sprinter of consequence, of

course, beating Sole Power in the Temple Stakes Gr.2 at

Haydock, finishing second to Dream Ahead in the July Cup

Gr.1 at Newmarket and Sprint Cup Gr.1 at Haydock, and to

Little Bridge in the King’s Stand Stakes Gr.1 at Royal Ascot.

Bated Breath ran 18 times in all, winning six and running

extensively in Pattern races, and he is passing on plenty of

good traits to his offspring, one of whom sold for €240,000

as a yearling at the latest Goffs Orby Sale.

HIGH PRAISE FROM THE EXPERTSBreeders’ Cup Miles are notoriously hard to win - think of

the likes of Miesque and Goldikova over the years - so it is

newsworthy that European breeders will have access to the

latest horse to achieve that feat in Expert Eye, who will take

up duties at Banstead Manor Stud in 2019.

Expert Eye has plenty to recommend him in addition to

that prestigious win. For a start, he represents a sire, in

Acclamation, who has achieved notable success with his

offspring both on the track and in the breeding shed.

In terms of ratings - be they official ones, Racing Post Ratings

or Timeform ratings - Expert Eye has been surpassed by only

two of Acclamation’s offspring: the dual King’s Stand Stakes

Gr.1 winner Equiano and the Nunthorpe Stakes Gr.1 winner

Marsha (two races in which Acclamation himself was placed,

incidentally). Marsha also won the Prix de l’Abbaye Gr.1.

Acclamation’s son, Dark Angel, has in turn been responsible

for two of the best European sprinters of the modern era

in Battaash and Harry Angel. Like Dark Angel, Expert Eye

was a Group winner at two years, something Equiano and

Marsha didn’t achieve

Equiano and Marsha were out-and-out sprinters, but

Acclamation has got some who have stayed a bit further,

and Expert Eye comes into that category. His wins at seven

furlongs included the Vintage Stakes Gr.2 at two years (a

performance described by Timeform as “arguably the most

striking performance by a two-year-old in a Pattern race all

year”) and the Jersey Stakes Gr.3 at three (where his four-

and-a-half-length winning margin was the largest in the

race this century), while he was also placed at a mile in the

Sussex Stakes Gr.1 at Goodwood and the Prix du Moulin de

Longchamp Gr.1.

Expert Eye’s dam, Exemplify - who won an eight-furlong

newcomers race at Deauville - is a half-sister to the Prix Robert

Papin Gr.2 and Cheveley Park Gr.1 winner Special Duty, who

was also awarded the 1000 Guineas Gr.1 at Newmarket and

its French equivalent at Longchamp. This is the family of the

multiple US winners Tates Creek and Sightseek, the latter one of

the most highly-rated mares this century with Timeform at 126.

Expert Eye was favourite at one time for the 2000 Guineas

Gr.1 at Newmarket and ended up rated the same as the

winner of that race, Saxon Warrior, by Timeform on 124.

Trainer Sir Michael Stoute described Expert Eye as “very

athletic and well balanced”, and it seems a good bet that

the horse will be passing on plenty of good attributes to his

progeny.

He’s naturally precocious, very well-balanced, well developed and mature. You would have to say

that he’s the best two-year-old that I have had for quite a while. He’s been

pretty natural from the beginning. Before we ran him we knew that he

THE GREATEST OF ALL TIMEThe “Greatest of All Time” title can be a contentious one in

sport. Even the likes of Muhammad Ali and Usain Bolt do not

prompt universal agreement in their chosen disciplines. Within

horseracing, however, there is precious little dissent: Frankel

was the greatest racehorse.

Timeform think so, as they rated him at 147, the highest

figure in that organisation’s long history. While Secretariat

possibly achieved even more on one incredible occasion in the

1973 Belmont Stakes, no horse in the history of the sport has

delivered more off-the-scale efforts than Frankel, or even come

close. Every one of Frankel’s last seven appearances saw him

run to 139 or higher with Timeform, which is the kind of figure

usually seen only about once a decade, not several times in a

season by the same horse.

The only residual criticism, and an unfair one at that, seems to

be that Frankel did not show off his brilliance outside Britain.

As it happens, Frankel the sire is doing by proxy one of the few

things that Frankel the racehorse did not do. At the latest count,

and after just three crops to reach the racecourse, Frankel’s

progeny have won in 14 different countries, from Argentina

to Australia and from Japan to the USA. They have included

Group 1 winners in Japan (Soul Stirring and Mozu Ascot),

a Grade 2 winner in the US (Fashion Business) and a Group 2

winner in Australia (Miss Fabulass).

One of Frankel’s best European representatives, the giant-

striding Group 2 winner Finche, has also pitched up Down

Under, where one of Frankel’s yearlings had earlier sold for

more than one million Australian dollars.

Nearer to home, Frankel the sire hit the ground running,

reaching 20 Northern Hemisphere Group winners faster than

any other European stallion in the history of the Pattern and

second only to Galileo in terms of Group winners foaled in 2014

to 2016 north of the Equator.

The winners have included the likes of Without Parole,

Mirage Dancer, Eminent, Monarchs Glen, Count Octave and

Weekender - all of them rated 120 or higher by Timeform, with

Without Parole winning the St James’s Palace Stakes Gr.1 at

Royal Ascot - and then, of course, there is Cracksman.

Cracksman was Timeform’s joint-highest-rated horse anywhere

in the world in 2017 on 136, thanks to a tremendous campaign

which climaxed with a runaway win in the Champion Stakes

Gr.1 on British Champions Day at Ascot, and he is currently out

there on his own in 2018 after a similarly breath-taking win in

that contest. The apple does not fall far from the tree. Racing

fans will be talking about Frankel decades from now. Perhaps

they will be talking about some of his sons and daughters, too.

My father and I were at Royal Ascot in 2012 when Frankel won the Queen Anne. I remember threading our way through the crowd of spectators, all brimming with expectation, to secure

a good spot along the rail where we could watch history unfold. Having the opportunity to then breed to this

extraordinary racehorse was like a dream come true. St James’s Palace Stakes winner Without Parole

was the result of the first mating that we did with Frankel and it is such an incredible outcome. To have our homebred son of

LIVING UP TO HIGH EXPECTATIONSIt can be difficult to live up to expectations when you retire to

stud as a top-class performer, the winner of all but one of your

eight races, the last four of them in Group 1 company, and are

superbly-bred for good measure. But Kingman did not just

live up to expectations with his first crop in 2018, he arguably

exceeded them.

His representatives included Calyx, sidelined after a brilliant

defeat of the subsequent Group 1 winner Advertise and the

subsequent Group 3 winner Sergei Prokofiev in the Coventry

Stakes Gr.2 at Royal Ascot, Persian King and Sangarius, rated

120p, 117p and 107p respectively by Timeform at the time of

writing.

Persian King was arguably the best juvenile in France in the

latest year, though it was a foray to Britain which saw him win

the Autumn Stakes Gr.3 at Newmarket in good style, beating

the subsequent Group 1 winner Magna Grecia. The Listed

winner Sangarius came up short when fourth to Too Darn Hot

in the Dewhurst Stakes Gr.1 on the same card but very much

looks like one who will do even better at three years.

There were also Listed wins at Chantilly for Poetry and at

Sandown for Look Around, as well as very promising debut

victories for King Of Comedy (100p), Raakib Alhawa (99p) and

Headman (96P).

There will surely be much more of that to come from a sire

who will end the campaign at the forefront of a good batch of

freshman sires.

Kingman was a fast miler, who put in some blistering sectionals

when winning the St James’s Palace Stakes Gr.1 and Sussex

Stakes Gr.1, and plenty thought he would have been effective

at six furlongs given the chance. Interestingly, however, many of

his offspring promise to stay further than he did.

Calyx is a fast strider, which is usually associated with sprinter/

milers, but Persian King and Sangarius have a flowing stride

like middle-distance horses: they are not the only ones. What’s

more, the last two have been measured with peak stride lengths

in excess of 26 feet - the sort of number usually seen only

among the elite.

Kingman’s yearlings sold very well in 2018, with a top price

of over one million guineas and a Book 1 average in excess

of 300,000 guineas. Buyers like him, and owners and trainers

like him. Most importantly of all, the racecourse test is already

speaking favourably of Kingman the sire.

Watching Kingman race we knew we had to send mares to him.

We were rewarded straight away when dual Gr.3 winner Swiss Diva

produced a lovely, quality filly in Listed winner Poetry, from his first

crop. Watching Poetry win that day in France gave all the team at Lordship the biggest thrill - racing homebreds at the top level on the

international stage and winning - it’s what breeding thoroughbreds is all

CONSISTENTLY SMART PERFORMANCESIn the occasionally fickle world of bloodstock and racing, it is

good to have something which you know you can rely upon,

something that has stood the test of time and repeatedly

delivered the goods. Oasis Dream has been just that, whether

as a racehorse - in which sphere he was one of the best sprinters

of the modern era - or as a sire who has produced numerous

Group winners and other smart performers.

Oasis Dream was very good as a two-year-old, winning the

Middle Park Stakes Gr.1, and even better as a three-year-old,

when he saw off the Antipodean threat of Choisir in the July

Cup Gr.1 at Newmarket and scorched home alone in the

Nunthorpe Stakes Gr.1 at York. The last-named resulted in a

133 timefigure from Timeform, which remains to this day the

best by a sprinter since Dayjur’s 142 in the same race in 1990.

As a sire, Oasis Dream has majored in speedy and durable

types, like the King’s Stand Stakes Gr.1 winner Prohibit, the

Nunthorpe Stakes Gr.1 winner Jwala, the Prix de l’Abbaye Gr.1

winner Goldream, top UAE sprinters Muarrab and Ertijaal, and

the brilliant 134-rated champion sprinter of 2015 Muhaarar.

But he has also got high-class milers in Aqlaam and Tuscan

Evening, and leading middle-distance performers like Midday

(winner of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf Gr.1 and a

host of important races in Europe, including three consecutive

Nassau Stakes Gr.1).

There was no letting up in the latest season, in which Oasis

Dream produced his best two-year-old filly yet, the Duchess

Of Cambridge Stakes Gr.2 and Prix Morny Gr.1 winner Pretty

Pollyanna, and one of his best fillies overall in Polydream. The

latter took some notable scalps in both the Prix du Palais-Royal

Gr.3 and the Prix Maurice de Gheest Gr.1 before enduring a

luckless run in the Prix de la Forêt Gr.1 on Arc Day.

There were also smart efforts from the Listed winners Imaging,

Mrs Gallagher, Mr Ritz and Stage Play as well as notable handicap

performances from Sharja Bridge, Crowned Eagle, Dreamfield,

Oasis Charm and Raising Sand. The evergreen Encore d’Or, and

Group performing juveniles Shine So Bright and Sand Share also

played their part.
