BALLARD: SUNSET HILLS WALK – January 2018 Start from the Ballard Coffee Works , 2060 NW Market St. Cross Market at Leary and proceed east . Across Market are the the Majestic Bay Theater, opened in 1915, the oldest continuously operating movie theater west of the Mississippi and Ballard Carnegie Library Bldg, 1904-63, now open as a restaurant. Turn right on Russell Ave and pass the Old Firehouse built in 1911, now also a restaurant. Continue southeast on Russell. Then turn left on Ione Place and left again on 17 th Ave. Proceed north on 17 th Ave. Walk through the Ballard Corners Park between 62 nd and 63 rd Streets. Cross 65 th St. We are entering the Loyal Heights section of Ballard named after real estate developer Harry Treat's daughter, Loyal. He began the Loyal trolley line and built an amusement park at Loyal (later Golden) Gardens to attract prospective buyers. Turn left on 70 th St. and enter Salmon Bay Park designed by the Olmsted brothers. Walk through the Park to the northwest. Keep an eye out for large Douglas fir trees in the area which hint at the earlier environment. Exit the park and continue north on 22 Ave to 77 th St. to the Loyal Heights Playfields and Community Center and BATHROOMS. Exiting the Community Center and continue west on 77 th and cross 24 th Ave. Then north on 28 th Ave and cross 80 th St. to Loyal Way. Loyal Way follows the tracks of the old trolley line to Loyal (Golden) Gardens. Cross 32 Ave and turn south. Turn west on 80 th then south on 33 rd then west again on 77 th to Sunset Hills Park. Walk along the bluffs overlooking Puget Sound and continue south on 34 th Ave. Turn left on 68 th St; cross 32 nd Ave and continue to the Nordic Heritage Museum. The Museum was established in 1980 and is the only museum in the U.S, dedicated soley to honoring the legacy and culture of immigrants from the 5 Nordic countries (can you identify their flags above the entrance?) Continue east on 68 th then turn south on 28 th Ave. Cross 65 th St. and continue past Ballard Elementary School and Community Center. Turn east on 58 th St., cross 24 th Ave, and continue to the Ballard Commons Park featuring a skate bowl and water fountains. Turn south on 22 nd Ave and pass the Ballard Public Library. It was designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson. The "green roof" is planted with more than 18,000 low-water-use plants; a computer-generated artwork uses data from sensors on the roof to create LED displays triggered by sunlight, rain, and wind. The Ballard Coffee Works is on the corner of 22 nd and Market right across from the historic Eagles Building. Distance: 5.4 miles
