30 August - 22nd Sunday of the year (Nearest Sunday to World Day of Prayer for Care of Creation (1 September))

" The universe unfolds in God, who fills it completely. Hence, there is a mystical meaning to be found in a leaf, in a mountain trail, in a dewdrop, in a poor person’s face. The ideal is not only

to pass from the exterior to the interior to discover the action of God in the soul, but also to discover God in

all things.”

CONFIRMATIONS: Will take place on the first weekend in October (4th Oct) when Bishop Stephen will be staying.

All those children who were prepared but due to the lockdown never made their confirmation this year are now at

St. Modan’s. We will see if their final preparation can be completed at St. Modan’s or with a catechist on a Satur-

day in the parish. Because of the number of candidates with their sponsors and perhaps 2 members of family we

will probably need to look at how we can organise this with the social distancing required. No doubt they will in-

volve a special mass or perhaps even two.

Preparation for children making Confirmations on 4th October will be

every Tuesday immediately after school in the church with Ms Philiben.

C O N F E S S I O N S : As we are not allowed to use the confessional there is no

scheduled time for confessions. Fr. Mike is willing to celebrate

the Sacrament of Penance by appointment during the week.

This will have to be face to face with social distancing. Depend-

ing on the time the place will be by mutual agreement (on the

sanctuary, in the sacristy). Please phone Fr. Mike or see him at

mass times.

C R O S S : The cross on the external church wall badly

needs varnished. We plan to hire scaffolding so

that we can safely clean, prepare and paint the

cross. Please if you are not scared of heights and

are able, or know of someone, who is able and

could offer a few hours please speak to Sid or

Fr. Mike.

Up until recently Mr. Tobin led the rosary just before the 11.30am Sunday mass. However, our ushers have to wel-

come people, ask them to sign their name and contact number if we have to trace people, and explain where people

have to sit. No matter how much we try this generates noise and does not create the most prayerful atmosphere for

the rosary. Therefore instead of praying the rosary before the Sunday 11.30 am mass Mr. Tobin will lead the rosary

every Thursday evening at 6.30pm on YouTube. (same connection as Sunday mass) Please let us all join him.

ROSARY on YouTube Thursdays at 6.30pm from St. Bernadette’s

Yo u Tu b e M a s s : All the proper equipment has now been obtained and people should notice better quality all round. The PPC agree

it was money well spent.

Since we are streaming live it is important to notice: If you sit where the choir normally sits there is a good possi-

bility you will be seen live on YouTube. The rest of the congregation is never seen.

Also with Live streaming we have a greater responsibility to our audience. Live streaming demands we are not dis-

ruptive with any unnecessary noise. Also please always come early for the 11.30am mass as that can be an issue.

S e a s o n o f C r e a t i o n : At the end of October we may (or may not) have our Diocesan Mission day with the theme :

Our mission to care for our home ,the earth.

We celebrate the 5th year of Pope Francis’ Encyclical Laudato Si. From 1st September to 1st October (feast of St.

Francis of Assis) we have in Scotland the Season of Creation. There are many prayer days and activities which you

may be aware of. May I call your attention to a lot of, what seem could be, very good talks and discussions (via

Zoom) that are being organised.

The details of many are summarised by SCIAF at: https://www.sciaf.org.uk/get-involved/events.

I suggest you have a look and register to assist some of them (free).

I would personally encourage you to join the one on what can be done in parishes on Tuesday 8th Sept at 6.30pm –

WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES

1 September to 4 October is Season of Creation.

From September 1 to October 4, Christians around the world are praying and caring for creation. It’s the “Season

of Creation”. The beginning and the end date of Season of Creation are linked with the concern for creation in the

Eastern and the Western traditions of Christianity, respectively.

September 1st was proclaimed as a day of prayer for the environment by the late Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios I

in 1989. The Orthodox church year starts that day with a commemoration of how God created the world. On 4 Oc-

tober, Roman Catholics and other churches from the Western traditions commemorate Francis of Assisi, known to

many as the author of the Canticle of the Creatures.

The proposal to celebrate a "Time for Creation" during these five weeks was made by the Third European Ecumeni-

cal Assembly in Sibiu in 2007. The following year, the WCC Central Committee invited churches to observe "Time

for Creation" through prayers and actions. In 2015, Pope Francis has designated September 1st as a World Day of

Prayer for Care of Creation for the worldwide Roman Catholic Church as well.

Throughout the years, major Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, and Anglican organizations have joined to encourage

the 2.2 billion Christians worldwide to pray and act on ecological issues.

In 2016, Pope Francis and Patriarch Bartholomew I released their special messages for the World Day of Prayer for

the Care of Creation, kicking off the month-long Season of Creation celebrations. Both leaders used strong lan-

guage to stress the urgency of the ecological crisis and the need to take action on climate change. Their special

messages are available here.

This year, the global reach of the novel coronavirus revealed our shared human nature and the inter-connectivity

of our economies, political structures, health care systems, food production chains, energy and transportation sys-

tems in devastating ways. The pandemic also demonstrated that the entire web is rooted in the earth and limited

by the earth’s capacity to sustain our economic and ecological demands. The unjust effects of climate change are a

consequence of our inability to find a sustainable balance of this web.

Each year, the ecumenical steering committee that provides this Season of Creation Celebration Guide suggests a

theme. The 2020 theme is Jubilee for the Earth.

The Season of Creation is facilitated by the World Council of Churches, the Global Catholic Climate Movement, ACT

Alliance, World Communion of Reformed Churches, the Anglican Communion Environmental Network, A Rocha,

the Lutheran World Federation, Christian Aid, Lausanne/WEA Creation Care Network, European Christian Environ-

mental Network

their lives; and so many volunteers, doctors, nurses, sisters, priests, who also lost their lives.

Let us remember the families who have suffered because of this.”

S C I A F Due to the pandemic there was no special collection for SCIAF last lent and the majority of parishioners did not

hand in their Wee Boxes.

SCIAF has been in touch with us: “Our huge thanks to you for supporting our work especially during this difficult

period – we couldn’t have done it with out you… We are delighted to share news …….

The UK government has confirmed any monies from collections can still be doubled.

This also applies to money raised through WEE BOXES, which can still attract UK government

doubling if they are returned in the month of September…… We realise that you may have sent in

all your parish’s Lenten donations already, or you may be focused on securing funding for your own

parish at this time. Please don’t feel you have to do more. We wanted to make sure that you are aware

of this “second chance” opportunity just in case you’d like to participate.”

The PPC decided to put a bucket at the doors of the church on the 2ND SUNDAY IN SEPTEMBER (13th).

PEOPLE CAN BRING ALONG THEIR wee boxes IF THEY STILL HAVE THEM OR LEAVE A DONATION IN THE BUCKET.

You can also put money in an envelope marked SCIAF. All this money will be doubled by the UK government.

M a r y ’ s M e a l s Due to the pandemic we will not have our usual clothes collection or raffle tickets sale.

Once the pandemic is over, Fr. Mike will arrange for a speaker to attend Mass and say a few words.

Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, we have seen hunger reach acute levels in the countries where we

work. Members of the Mary’s Meals family are telling us that they have never before seen such

desperation spread so widely around the world.

All around the world, schools are closed and homes have become places of learning. This means we have had to

find new ways to feed the children who eat Mary’s Meals – sometimes the only food they receive in a day.

The UN recently published a report calling for urgent attention to be given to the plight of children globally. It high-

lights the catastrophic effect that loss of school meals during the coronavirus pandemic could have in the world’s

poorest countries.

Through our Covid-19 response activities, we are now reaching nearly all of the children who rely on our nutritious

meals at home. Working with governments, community leaders and our trusted partners, we have developed new

methods of distribution to reach children in their communities and provide food to them at home, until it is safe for

them to return to the classroom.

But our work won’t stop. Still, we hear stories of hardship and hunger, and there are still children we are yet to

reach.

If you can, please help us to keep reaching the children who rely on Mary’s Meals each school day – your dona-

tions, prayers and support are needed now more than ever.

Remember that for the time being the Sunday Mass obligation does not exist, there are alternatives.

We will also have morning mass on Mon, Wed, Thurs & Saturday mornings at 9.30am which at least gives parish-

ioners the opportunity to attend a “Live” mass in the Church, at some time. We will also continue with our live

broadcast YouTube mass at 11.30 each Sunday morning.

THIS MAY BE THE “NEW NORMAL” FOR SOME CONSIDERABLE TIME

As general principles we suggest the following for you to consider:

Those who are over seventy years of age or “shielding” because of their general health should think carefully

about the appropriateness of attending Mass.

Perhaps consider coming to a weekday rather than Sunday Mass which may be quieter.

Join us for our 11.30 Sunday Mass online on YouTube which will continue to be available on Sunday morning.

Consider visiting the church for private prayer rather than attending Mass.

Preparation for children making Confirmations on 4th October will be every Tuesday immediately after

school in the church with Ms Philiben. *
