family. Additionally, my experi-ences at ASU also nurtured my senses of resilience to stay fo-cused and to treat every hurdle as an opportunity to better one’s self and to serve others.

What advice do you have for current music majors at ASU hoping to have a professional career in music?

All students deserve a quality music education; thus they deserve the best musicianship from their teachers. If one has chosen this profession, they must do the work. There is no excuse for not being prepared, whether you are teaching or professionally performing or both; people will expect your best always.

Why did you choose to apply for the Ph.D. program at UF?

I felt very comfortable and valued during my visit and was very im-pressed not only by the rigor of the school’s music education research program, but also the emphasis on being the best musician one can be at any level of study. This helped solidify my decision to be a Gator.

What was the application and audition process like?

I submitted a video of my class-room teaching as well as evidence of research. The in-person interview was intense, yet it was all done in a sincere manner.

What has been one of the most memorable musical moments of your teaching career?

The chance to bring music and culture into an inner-city middle school stands as the pinnacle of my career. More often than not, one’s first teaching job is often not in the most desirable situation and coupled with the naiveté of a new music educator, the first few years can be tough; however, I dug deep and set the expectation for the best in my students.

How did the Department of Mu-sic at ASU help you prepare for a career in music?

The Department of Music at ASU will always have my heart due to the program providing me with a solid pedagogical foundation, nur-turing my work ethic, and intro-ducing me to a multitude of fine associates, friends, and extended

This spring, there are two main music major scholarship audition days scheduled for on campus:

    January 30th Connection Day

February 27th Honor Band & Honor Choir Festival Event

Video Auditions are also welcome and encouraged for consideration.

Each spring semester faculty and staff from the Depart-ment of Music audition talent-ed high school seniors from across the nation hoping to land a coveted music scholar-ship to attend Alabama State University! The Department is able to offer several scholar-ships opportunities for finan-

cial assistance to students, including scholarships for being a music major, and scholarships for university ensembles such as Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, and Choir. Scholarships are of-fered based on the areas of musical talent and ability, aptitude, and academic merit.

provide musical experiences for children who otherwise might not have access to the Arts. The camp will be held on the campus of ASU with instruction provided by music faculty and staff in conjunc-tion with local music educa-tors from the public schools. Camp info will be posted in Feb at www.alasu.edu/msmc

This fall, plans have been underway to launch a new summer camp opportunity for Montgomery area students in grades 7-9. The new summer camp experience will be open to middle school and junior high students who have at least one year of experience playing or singing in their school band or choral pro-

gram. The Department of Music at ASU is currently in the running for a $20,000 Alabama Arts Education Initi-ative Grant from the Alabama State Department of Educa-tion that would help subsidize the program intended to reach an underserved minority com-munity in the Montgomery and surrounding areas and
