Next draw 26th July.
This week in our parish we entered what is known as the Second Phase and we are
opening the church for private and personal prayer from Monday to Saturday 8.30am to
10.30am. We also had our first requiem mass with the new conditions of only 15 people
present. We are in the process of preparing to begin celebrating public masses (with con-
trolled numbers) hopefully by August depending on the government.
I would like to thanks the many, many volunteers who have come forward to make
all this possible. Some have dedicated many hours in the church planning and helping
make the necessary changes.
It is important that during this crisis we as a parish rise up and meet the challenges
before us and recognise many wonderful and positive things have been happening
through wonderful, dedicated Christian people.

The Parish Pastoral Council despite the pandemic has still been meeting
more frequently via Zoom (Internet). At the last meeting it was discussed that there is a
good possibility Sunday masses will return before August and we must be prepared for
this. If everyone arrived on their own we could accommodate very few. However if people
came as a family or their “bubble” the church could hold more observing the 2m distance
rule. It is likely that at each mass we could only have about 45/50 people. Of course, there
is still no Sunday obligation for mass just now and many people for health reasons will
prefer not to come. However, there still will not be sufficient room and therefore it is pro-
posed we add, temporarily, another mass at 8.30am.
It would help our organisers if you could indicate (via email or post through the
parish door) what is your preference for mass and how many people are likely to come.
Do not worry this is not a promise nor a contract and we will not hold you to it but it will
help us to begin to calculate what may happen. We still do not know if entrance will be by
invite, number or your preferential option. We first have to look at what you are thinking
and what may best suit you. Please do this during this coming week.

CHURCH RE-OPENING (Private Prayer) As of last week, we are now allowed to open our church for private prayer IF the parish can organise all the criteria for doing so and our public follow all orientations. This has involved quite a lot of people organising this.
St. Bernadette’s church will be open Monday to Saturday for private prayer from 8.30am to 10.30 am. Providing we have enough volunteers for this.
Please note the following.
At all times there will be a “welcomer” present who can answer any questions and guide you. If you are not willing to follow their instructions you will be asked to leave the church. This is for your good and the wellbeing of everyone. This refers espe-cially to where you can sit/kneel.
If you want to enter the church you MUST:
• Bring and wear your own face mask at all times inside the church. (No mask -No Entry)
• You must clean your hands at the sanitiser gel dispensers as you enter and leave the church. This prevents infection being transmitted to benches etc.
• The doors will be left open to avoid people touching handles and wood so come with appropriate clothing as there will be no heating.
• There is a one-way system. Enter by the main church door and leave by the sacristy door. Markers are on the floor. People should not be encountering others in the corridor.
• At all times, including at the entrance and in the corridors, you must keep a distance of 2m from any other person (unless they are part of your “bubble”).
• To avoid transmission of the virus please do not touch hymn books, mass books or any other leaflet, paper. The less you touch the safer for everyone.
• If you wish to light a candle please do so in the areas permitted. There will be unlit candles on the stands, please pay for what you wish to use and the “Welcomer” will light it for you. Do not touch other candles, please.
Obs. When the church closes it will be cleaned and sanitised for the next day
TOILETS: If possible, avoid using the toilets. If you must use the toilet as you leave take a tissue and wipe down all the surfac-es, including door handles, taps, that you have touched and dispose in basket provided.
Next week we will give indications of some of the POSSIBLE orientations we may have when, hopefully, at the beginning of August we will begin Sunday mass.
THESE PROCEDURES & GUIDELINES MAY CHANGE IF THE GOVERNMENT INFORMS THE SITUATION HAS CHANGED.

PREPARATION FOR PUBLIC MASSES
As we progress into phase 3 of lockdown release, we will need to plan for public masses.
A survey of the church shows that to comply with the 2metre social distance rules we can only accommodate
22 individuals in the church, this number increases if people come as couples or families. So the number in
the church is limited but slightly flexible.
Once we reach our maximum number we CANNOT admit any more people .
All the rules in the previous section will also need to be followed .
Due to the reduced capacity we will introduce another Sunday mass probably at 8.30am.
Sunday masses will therefore be: Saturday Vigil 5.30pm and Sunday morning at 8.30am & 11.30am .
To help us plan for mass it would be useful in parishioners could indicate which of the 3 masses they would
come to. It would also help to know the number coming with you. Please send the information to the parish
office at
As this newsletter only goes to around 60 parishioners, if you know of anyone else from the parish who does
not get the newsletter please inform them of our plans and ask them to contact someone from the PPC or
look on the parish website for more information.
We will have more information in the coming weeks and will publish this in the newsletter and on the parish
website.
Please give us feedback and help us... We have to make it very clear we have a limited
capacity under these regulations for our church and we know it will probably be necessary
to refuse entrance to some people. If you inform us it probably helps us to allocate you and/or
your family the mass they wish to participate in. Big thanks for your understanding .
(On the next page we have the changes we can expect)

PLANS FOR INTRODUCTION OF MASSES IN THE CHURCH: PHASE 3
We are now prepared for when the government gives us permission for public masses.
First of all it is good to be quite clear we will only have mass provided
that the parish and its parishioners are following the guidelines.
(There could be changes at any time so we must be prepared and adapt at short notice.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Some of the changes and practises you can expect at mass.
There will be at least 4 ushers with identification. Please follow their instructions or you will be asked to leave.
Ushers will show people to where they can sit. This is very complicated as we must keep a 2m space between peo-
ple who do not belong to the same family of “bubble.” People will be shown to the front of the church and not to
their “favourite” places. We have to avoid people passing each other in the corridors and breaking the 2m rule.
To enter the church, you must have brought your own face mask and must use it. Children under 5yrs are exempt.
Sanitiser. On entering the church (and leaving) you must take some gel from the sanitiser on the way and sanitise
your hands. This reduces the possibility of infecting the benches.
No mass books, sheet, hymn books will be given out to reduce the possibility of handing on the virus.
The bishop’s intention is that we come together as a community for mass but at the same time spend as little time
as possible in an enclosed space where cross contamination is facilitated. For this reason, we will only have the
one reading and Gospel, no Gloria, nor creed. There will be no Offertory procession.
The collection will be taken up as you exit the door. There should be no second collections but should there be a
need it will be at the door as you come in.
To avoid people expelling contaminated air there will be no singing.
The church is organised a one-way system so please follow the ushers’ instructions.
Holy Communion must be received on the hand. The ushers will guide you in a one way system keeping to your 2
metres distance. This will take an enormous amount of time so the bishops have suggested Holy Communion will
be distributed after the final blessing. People will be directed to the correct place; they will receive holy commun-
ion and exist immediately by the sacristy door. This could be changed but people will be notified.
TOILETS: if possible DO NOT USE THE TOILETS. If necessary before you leave the toilet wipe down with the anti-
bacterial wipe everything you have touched (taps, door handles, sink) and place wipe in the bin provided.
Immediately after mass the ushers and registered volunteers will clean the church according to the criteria they
have been trained with.
Please note: If we do not have sufficient ushers to guarantee the
safety of people in church then we will not be able to have mass.
However, because space in the church will be reduced by about 60% to 70%, we will introduce another Sunday
morning mass at 8.30 am. People will have to indicate which mass they plan to attend on a weekly basis. Slowly
the ushers will take the name and contact number of parishioners as if someone should have the virus the authori-
ties will need to inform all those who had contact with them in church are notified for quarantine purposes.
NOISE. We want to encourage young families always to participate and realise that for many parents bringing
young children to mass is a tremendous sacrifice and amount of work. Just like in the health centre prams are not
allowed inside the church and children should not be running around the church. This is not so much because of
the distraction they cause but for their own wellbeing and safety. If there were to be an accident and a child had
been climbing the benches our insurance will not cover the accident. Sometimes children become a little too noisy
so please take them to the back of the church. It is unfair to our Readers who are not professional speakers having
to compete with children. Please note that Fr. Mike’s voice will not return to what is was like and is still in a phase
of recuperation. Please respect his effort to say mass and keep unnecessary noise to a minimum.
