From Your Senior Warden:

With a great deal of joy and thanksgiving I am able to finally announce to you that, through the tireless work of the Search Committee - and the faith the Vestry and the entire congregation placed in it - a new Rector has been called to Christ Church, Tyler. He is The Reverend David A. Luckenbach, and he comes to us from St. Mark’s on the Mesa in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

David, his wife Silvia, and their three precious children – William (5), Jona-than (3) and Katherine “Katie” (1) – have already begun the process of moving to Tyler. While David will be at Rally Day on September 13 to preach, his first official Sunday as Celebrant and Rector of Christ Church will be September 20.

You may wonder how a man with such a great Texas name could be from New Mexico. In fact, David’s ancestors founded the well-beloved little Hill Country town of Luckenbach, and he and his wife Silvia are both native Texans. They are now returning to the “homeland” after a seven-year stopover in New Mexico, and for that we can all give thanks to God. I would prefer to let David tell you his story when you meet him, but the short version is this: David, for the most part, grew up in the Corpus Christi area. He is a third generation Epis-copalian who knew from an early age that he wanted to be a minister. After graduating from Texas A&M University, David spent one year at Texas Tech University in pursuit of a law degree.

David’s involvement with Canterbury House at Tech, and also with Young Life in Corpus Christi and Bryan-College Station, brought him much notice from both the Diocese of West Texas and the Diocese of Northwest Texas. The Bishop of the Diocese of West Texas called him as he was finishing his first year of Law School and urged him to consider entering into the priesthood. David received his Masters of Theology at The University of the South, Sewanee, and in 1998 became a Priest of the Episcopal Church at a very early age. His first church was in Brownsville (where he met and married Silvia, who is also a cradle Episcopalian) and his second church was in San Antonio. In 2002 David was called to be Rector of St. Mark’s on the Mesa in Albuquerque, where he has been ever since.

I cannot tell you enough good things about David. You will learn of them yourselves very shortly. But what I will tell you is this: the Search Committee is comprised of a very broad cross-section of church members in terms of age, professions, how long they have been Episcopalians, how long they have been at Christ Church, and what their particular passions are within the church. group was prayerfully unanimous in its belief that David should be our next Rector. And when the Vestry was presented with the Search Committee’s compelling reasons why they thought David should be called, their decision was unanimous, too.

The Search Committee, the Vestry and I eagerly await the arrival of David, Silvia, William, Jonathan and Katie. Thank you all for your extreme patience this past year, and most heartfelt thanks to the staff and the interim clergy who have functioned as an inspired team throughout this transition. As I said in the last issue of The Crucifer, Ecclesiastes 7:8 states that “the end of a matter is better than its begin-ning…” This is a great ending to an amazing jour-ney. Thanks be to God.

Sherry Dunn Senior Warden P.S. Robin Hood Brians is compiling a video directory on DVD to give to David and Silvia to help familiarize them-selves with all of us before he actually begins his official duties. Robin Hood and his team of videographers will record your brief self-introductions on Sunday, August 30 after the 7:30 a.m. service and before and after the 10:00 service. Signs will be posted around the church to let you know where the videographers will be. Please stop by and help give our new rector this great welcoming gift.

Faith in Action Christ Episcopal Church is this year’s recipient

of the Faith in Action award from PATH. The award will be presented at the PATH Week Prayer Luncheon on Tuesday, September 8,

12:00 noon, at Marvin United Methodist Church.

If you would like to attend this luncheon, please call Julie in the church office to make

your reservation. Two tables will be reserved, and there is no charge.

PATH - People Attempting To Help

From A Record of Faith Christ Episcopal Church 1867-1967 Mary Hayes and Frances McCallum (Chapter 1910 – 1919, continued)

In 1912 -1913 under the Rev. Mr. Platt, the lot on West Elm and South Bois d’Arc was purchased… for $7000, a price to match changing America and its accelera-tion to changing standards of living. Rector Platt was made Chairman of receiving contributions, and a Building Fund was set up. On April 7, 1913, it was reported that the first donation had been received. On May 13 purchase of the lot was concluded, with subscriptions from 73 indi-viduals added to the funds already on hand, leaving a bal-ance of only $972.83 still due on the property.

It was four years, one month and twenty-four days after the purchase of the lot before the final contract on the building was let; and even after construction was started, the building progressed slowly because of the “scarcity of labor and the government’s demand for material.” For, the year was 1914. The beginning and the ending of the building of the new Christ Church coincided with the

beginning and the ending of a period in history that was to be forever set aside in the minds of men throughout Chris-tendom.

“On the seventh day of the seventh month of 1917,” wrote the Rev. Mr. Snowden, “the building committee …let the contract for the new church…” In the fall a corner-stone was presented as a gift from a parishioner, and the Bishop was invited for the groundbreaking ceremonies in October. Bishop Kinsolving brought with him the Rev. G.E. Sargent of Marshall, and with Mr. Snowden, per-formed “the prescribed ritual for such occasions, “closing with the great hope that “this holy place be filled with God’s praise and homage, and that within its walls true faith and brotherly love abide.”

Spirituality Christian Education Classes Sunday Mornings - 10:00 — 10:50 a.m.

FAITHFUL BELIEVERS

Classes begin Sunday, September 20

Adult Christian Education: Growing in Christ, in Faith and Love September 20, 27, October 4, 11 Poosie Swann will lead this class. Poosie’s plan for this four week class is to get an overview of God’s long preparation for the coming of Christ’s King-dom, and then to take a look at Jesus as Love Incarnate, as Wise Teacher, as Savior and Risen Lord, and as present Reality. In your study of scripture, she will be drawing on insights from the writings of N.T. Wright, Dallas Willard, John Claypool and others.

The Second Great Awakening September 20 - October 25 The Rev. Stephen Stine will lead the course. From the 1820s to the 1840s, American religion experi-enced a tremendous upheaval known as the Second Great Awakening. From this period arose entirely new denomi-nations, such as the Mormons, the emergence of revivalism among Protestant churches, and a new understanding of mission work in the Episcopal Church. The roles of women, African Americans, and the laity in Christian de-nominations were transformed by the events of the Second Great Awakening.

The Third Great Awakening November 1 - December 6 The Rev. Stephen Stine will lead the course. Starting in the 1910s, a third great wave of change rolled over American religious organizations. Fundamentalism, Evangelicalism, and Pentecostalism emerged as important components of American church life. The mainstream denominations, including the Roman Catholic, Episcopal, and Methodist Churches, dealt with the issues of modern-ism and new missionary work. The Third Great Awaken-ing had substantive effects on religion and politics that are still felt today.

Parables October 18, 25, November 1, 8 John Carr will lead this class. The concept of this class is to utilize either parables or other New Testament stories as springboards for discussion in the format of the EFM Theological Reflections. This will serve to present the familiar stories of the New Testa-ment in a new discussion format that may be unfamiliar. The product of each discussion will be the “insights and implications” that the stories provide for each participant to carry, not only into their everyday life, but for them to

share with others. The goal is to enable those who attend to have a new paradigm for biblical discussion and to incre-mentally enhance their ability to be better witnesses for Jesus.

The Narrative Sweep and Central Themes of Scripture

November 15, 22, 29, December 6 Trey Yarbrough will lead this class. Trey will present an overview of the Scriptures — their nar-rative sweep — and in the process, engage the class in a dis-cussion of key Biblical themes. His hope is that an exami-nation of the “larger picture” will provide a greater under-standing of particular books and passages in the Bible and encourage attendees generally in their study and medita-tion of Scripture.

Children, Mid-High and Sr. High: The 2009-2010 Children’s Sunday school curricu-lum is ready! We’ll walk with Jonah, Daniel, Jesus and Peter. Children will have fun learning about these Bible characters. Teachers are needed for art, movie, drama and science. Please call Tina if you can help.

Jr. High. We’ll look at the lives and experiences of those who lived extraordinary lives of faith with the intention to inspire and teach us to do the same.

Sr. High. In line with our theme of “Faithful Believers”, Senior EYC Sunday school will survey different character studies of faith icons in the Old and New Testament. Join us as we review each different forerunner of our faith, de-voting several weeks to each character to see what we can glean from their lessons in faithfulness.

Weekday Christian Education Men’s Bible Study: Tuesdays at 7:15 a.m. Coming in September: Women’s Bible Study, Book of Romans, led by Poosie Swann, Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. (begins 9/16). Women’s Bible Study: Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.

Fall EFM Groups Forming. Education for Ministry is about looking deeply into Christian tradition, culture, ex-perience, and into one’s self to find grounding in faith and community. Through study, prayer, and reflection, EFM group members move toward a personal understanding of the fullness of God’s Kingdom and the unique place within it each of us holds. If you would like a safe commu-nity in which to explore, share insights, and discuss ques-tions raised by study materials, you are encouraged to join an EFM group. To join the morning EFM group, contact Dolph Miller at 903.534.0385. To join the evening EFM group, contact John Carr at 903.571.0306.

Dear Members of Christ Church:

By the time you receive this issue of The Crucifer, Jerry Davidson, our Organist/Choirmaster of the past 1 ½ years, will have retired. While Jerry’s tenure with us was short, I know he and Susan touched the lives of many in our parish. Please join me in extending our best heart-felt wishes to both of them in their retirement, and keep them in our prayers as they decide where the future will lead them.

Jeffrey Ford has graciously agreed to serve as Interim Organist/Choirmaster while we go about the task of finding a replacement for Jerry. Jeffrey has served in this capacity for us before, and I cannot think of a better person to see us through this transition. We will begin the process of seeking a new person in the very near fu-ture, but I take great comfort in knowing that Jeffrey is at the helm in the meantime.

Please keep Jerry and Susan, Jeffrey and the Ford fam-ily, the members of our various choirs and the choristers of the Choir School of East Texas in your prayers.

Respectfully, Sherry Dunn

10%! Thanks to those who have.

Stephanie Seefeldt - Rally Day Guest Musician

Stephanie Seefeldt was raised in Green Bay, Wiscon-sin, where, from an early age, she began to grow in her love of thoughtful worship and historic hymnody. She went on to study music at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point with an emphasis in singing. She won several student vocal competitions in the state. Her greatest joy, however, was quickly becoming leading music with which people, either in church or other Christian gatherings, could wor-ship the Lord.

After college she was called into full-time church work, eventually taking the position as worship leader at Elm-brook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin. After five years there, she was called to Blackhawk Church in Madison. While at Elmbrook, Stephanie began a partnership with Jill Briscoe that has taken them to conferences across the country and abroad. Stephanie and Jill are currently par-ticipating in Anne Graham Lotz’s Just Give Me Jesus re-vival events, which brought her to Texas this weekend. She also served as the Associate Organist at Nashotah House Episcopal Seminary from 2004-2007.

Stephanie met her husband, Scott, in college. Scott spent five years ministering to college students in the Mil-waukee area. He is now the Rector of Trinity Episcopal

Church in Baraboo, WI, where the family resides. Scott and Stephanie have adopted two sons and (biologically) welcomed a baby girl on Christmas Day, 2004, and an-other son in September 2008. For more information about Stephanie's ministry, or to order CD's, visit www.stephanieseefeldt.com.

Jesus calls us the salt of the earth, but how can we be used? How can we fulfill the purpose He has for us? Learn how to use your skills and passions to glorify God in all the earth - no matter your location or voca-

What people are saying about Perspectives... “Perspectives opens your eyes to another world.” - Jim Ward- Executive Director- Friends of Saint John’s University Tanzania and recent Perspectives graduate

Youth Ministry A New Beginning...Again! Along with the commence-ment of a new school year, the new church school year begins. It will be an exciting start as we welcome our new Rector, Fr. David Lucken-bach. It will be a pleasure getting to know him, and I know he will be very inter-ested in and impressed with our youth. In this school year, it will also be exciting to move onto the fourth floor of the Grelling-Spence build-ing. Many thanks go to Bryan Rossman and Gary Avery for providing housing to the youth during the building process. As thankful as we are for the EYC house and the NewSpace on Front St., coming home to our little corner on Bois D’Arc and Elm cannot arrive soon enough.

Also new is the structure of our mid-high youth group. The 5th and 6th graders now have a group to call their own. As the EYC Fish, they will have their own activities, Sunday school class, and even their own logo, as seen

above. Tina Ridley and I share the leadership of the EYC Fish. The Jr. EYC is composed of the 7th and 8th graders. Not to be left out, they too have their own logo. They will continue to have activities and Sunday school designed especially for them. They are the first of the EYC veterans, and I know we will continue to have wonderful EYC ex-periences. Vance is working on plans for the Sr. EYC, and Tina has been busy with the Sunday school curriculum for the children. This year’s Sunday school theme for all youth and children is Faithful Believers. We’ll look at the lives and experiences of those who lived extraordinary lives of faith with the intention to inspire and teach us to do the same.

A new Rector, a new school year, a new look for the mid-high youth, and best of all, a new chapter in the life of Christ Church. For faithful believers, this new beginning offers us yet another opportunity to take part in God’s plan for the church and in the lives of those around us. Respectfully submitted, Bobbie Schroeder Director of Children’s & Youth Ministries
