Disconnect to Reconnect

I’ve read an interesting article recently titled: “Unplug at Camp!” by Dan Weir. He recognizes recent studies in the U.S. fi nding that the time youth spend in front of screens (computer, TV, cell phones) is continuing to rise. The average electronic device screen time today is a startling 7.5 hours per day for the average child. Through these devices the youth of our society are in some ways MORE connected to their peers around the world than ever before. At the same time, the experience of person to person interac-tion is in decline. While the opportunities may still be there, it is easy for all people to retreat into the safety of their phones when placed in a potentially awkward or scary situation.

Camp Olson’s “unplugged” lifestyle is an increasingly rare opportunity for young people to let go of their electronics for a week at a time. We are dedi-cated to providing this opportunity so that campers have the opportunity to connect with others around them without distraction. The gains of personal confi dence and independence are huge when a camper comes to camp and is faced with navigating their fi rst couple of days without the technological “crutch” these devices provide. In this way, campers are truly “away” at camp and have the opportunity to grow, learn, and develop on their own. It is a powerful exercise that is guided by caring and trained counselors, all dedicated to the cause. Because camp is such a close-knit and caring envi-ronment, the opportunities for growth are endless. In 1922, Harvard Uni-versity President Charles Eliot said, “The organized summer camp is the most important step in education that America has given the world.” We continue to believe this at Camp Olson!

Our electronic devices are tools that have their valid use and are here to stay. They allow camp-friends to keep in touch much more easily—and that’s a great thing! But, we will continue to avoid them at camp, to keep the experience pure. In this way, the experience of camp is even more vital and special for youth than ever before as we disconnect to reconnect in the Northwoods.

President’s MessageA few summers ago a good friend, Tom Healy (Camp Director 1992 To 1995), spent the better part of a day at camp. Russ took Tom on a walk, explaining the vision of where camp was headed and all of the structural improvements that had occurred since Tom’s last visit. Finished with the tour, Tom walked over to me; I eagerly asked him what he thought about all of the changes at Camp. Tom with that grin only a Healy could make said “Everything had changed…but nothing has changed.” Not a higher compliment could be made.

As board members, our charge is to maintain the highest quality camp experience for our community of campers, staff and alumni. The Board’s passion and commitment often cause us to hold camp to standards that exceed any accrediting body. High standards alone do not make a successful camp; the balance comes in working even more diligently to preserve the key values that foster the unique

spirit of Camp Olson YMCA. The Spirit of Camp Olson is what keeps people coming back.

I welcome all of the new campers and their family’s to the Camp Olson community. For those alumni that have not seen how camp has changed…or, should I say has remained the same stop in soon to reconnect, or at least put the 60th Anniversary Celebra-tion on your calendar – it’s Labor Day weekend 2014.

Talk to someone about Camp Olson today.

Be Well,

Mike Van Straaten

The Camp Olson YMCA Board ofDirectors with gratitude extend their heart-felt thanks for your past, present and future support for youth, leadership and our camp-ing programs.

Camp Olson YMCA Board Members vol-unteer their time and talents to support the achievement of our mission.

The 2012 FinancialCamp Olson YMCA is pleased to report that the fi scal year ended on September 30, 2012 with a small surplus. This was due in part to continued increased fi nancial support, restricted support, and sig-nifi cant in-kind donations by alumni and friends which help to offset costs related to our operations and capital improvements. Figures provided by the independent auditing fi rm Wolter & Raak Ltd.. To view a complete copy of our 2011-2012 audit or IRS 990 charitable report please visit our website at www.campolson.org

Record Attendance in 2012 The summer of 2012 was a great success on many levels, perhaps most notably in our total number of camper weeks served. 1121 camper weeks were provided over the nine week summer surpassing the 2010 record of 1065. Our donors provided over $70,500 in fi nancial assistance to over 270 children this past summer. The success of our enrollments is a testament to our great programs and to our wonderful coun-selors who are on the front lines providing awe-some, life-changing experiences to each and every camper who walks these grounds. The Spirit of the Northwoods is strong when we come together for meals and each night for campfi re on the shores of Little Boy Lake. We truly believe that we are changing the world here at Camp Olson, one child at a time, by providing and safe and nurturing atmosphere where campers can be themselves. Indeed, Camp Olson is place where countless young people have found their true selves and each year we are privileged to meet new friends.

Colton Altobell, Camp Olson’s Camp Director and Caitlin Crouchet were married on December 29 in Min-neapolis. The bride and groom were surrounded by family and of course Camp Olson Alumni.

What Wonderful Spirit

I would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our donors, alumni, volunteers and staff on behalf of those who have been touched by your trust and generous spirit of time, money and talent. For 58 years Camp Olson YMCA has been proactively meeting the ever-changing needs of those who depend on and value our camp-ing programs. Looking back, we are delighted that we have touched the lives of so many youth, families and young leaders. Looking into the future, we will be searching for new and effective activities and programs to help our campers adapt, grow and develop in spirit, mind and body. We must remain steadfast in our mis-sion to “Share the Spirit of the Northwoods” with all who attend our quality camp-ing programs. We must work together to bring songs to new voices and laughter to all hearts. With your support we will work to continue camp’s current tradition of growth and excellence and we look forward to engaging more campers and all of our friends in our commitment in what we know will be a bright future. Russ Link ~ Executive Director

Meet Our Newly Elected Board MembersLucy Bahn – Rochester, MN – 1st Year, 1st Term I am originally from the Netherlands and moved to the U.S. as a teenager. I presently reside in Rochester. I am married to Mark Bahn, who has a long standing history with Camp Olson, as a camper, work crew, CIT and staff member. He introduced me and our three children to Family Camp in the year 2000. So began a deep appreciation for Camp Olson. Our family continued attending family camp in the years since and our daughters have enjoyed many of the summer programs. Most recently, Jessica was in the CIT program and Emily worked as a counselor. I hold a doctorate in molecular biology from UCLA, and am involved in numerous hobbies, clubs, and volun-teer activities.

Lee Rieth – Plymouth, MN – 1st Year, 1st Term I have known about Camp Olson my entire life. I am native of Austin, MN, and attended Camp Olson Family Camp for the first twenty years of my life (1970-1989), participated in Youth Camp for four summers (1981-1984), and served on the Camp Olson Staff for three summers (1985-1986, 1988). After graduating from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY in 1992 with a B.S. and M.Eng. in Operations Research, I moved to Austin, TX, where I worked for six years at IBM and 3M (and, more importantly, met my wife Alissa, also a Minnesota native). In 1998, I returned to Cornell to pursue a Ph.D. in Chemistry, which I achieved in 2003. We then moved to Spartanburg, SC, where I worked at Milliken & Company’s Chemical Division. After having two children (Lucy and Owen) in South Carolina, we decided it was time to return to God’s country, moving back to Minnesota in 2008. I now work for Segetis, a venture capital-funded company focused on producing specialty chemicals from bio-based feedstocks. My return to Minnesota has allowed me to reconnect with Camp Olson – and our family returned to Family Camp in the summer of 2012, introducing a third generation of Rieth’s to Camp Olson Family Camp. I am thrilled for the opportunity to become more involved with Camp Olson through serving on the Board of Directors -- Camp Olson has provided me with wonderful memories and values that I continue to cherish to this day, and want those gifts to be available to others for generations to come.

Kent Sall – St. Paul, MN – 1st Year, 1st Term I was a camper twice in the late 70’s. It was filled with many lessons in the culture of boys! But, I must say that I didn’t truly un-derstand my bond with Camp Olson, or “Camp Bolson” as my daughter first understood it, until my wife Jacki and we started spending our New Years Eve anniversaries at camp. On one of these anniversary visits I skied on an already broken (by Andy Healy) trail around the Swamp, the only day that I have ever heard the words “fifty below without wind chill” uttered from the radio while sitting at the hearth of E.O.‘s “Summer” House. Ahhhhhhh! Glad my bindings held. My family and I are regular attendees of the Memorial Day Work Weekend. Additionally, my 16 year old daughter has been a camper for the past six years and will be a CIT spending four weeks at camp this summer. Professional History: 1990 Graduated U of M - Art Ed.; 1990 – 92 Art Teacher – Botswa-na; 1994 – 96 Art Teacher, Ecuador; 1997 – present Computer Teacher, St. Paul. Currently, I am in my first year as computer teacher at Eastern Heights Elementary and I spent the previ-ous 15 years at Museum Magnet School.

Tom Shepard – Minneapolis, MN – 1st Year, 1st Term I first experienced Camp Olson as a family camper when I was three years old and was later a camper for eight summers including two years as a Homesteader. From 1997-2002, I was on staff, spending most of my time at the Boathouse. Since graduating from Camp I have become a professor of Mechani-cal Engineering at the University of St. Thomas and now live in Minneapolis. Camp is a place where I feel a special connection, a place whose positive transformational impact on children and young adults I have experienced first-hand. I am delighted to be giving back to the place which has given so much to me.

Counselors-in-Training Just a few spaces are remaining in our CIT programs this sum-mer! View the Camp Olson website for more information on the CIT program.

The Camp Olson Counselor in Training program is the transition-ing step for those who aspire to work at camp in the future and for those who are looking for a challenging and life-changing opportu-nity. Camp Olson CIT’s undergo an experience like no other. Over the course of four weeks, they will gain leadership skills, trek for a week along the Superior Hiking Trail, and forge lifelong bonds with their fellow participants. The program provides great life-ex-perience and is a great primer to future employment at Camp Olson as well as tools for life. Sailing Away

It is now ‘that’ time of year again. The time when Ugg boots and North Face parkas are ushered out by Ray Ban sunglasses and Chaco sandals, worn by all with the youthful anticipation of unknown summer adventures yet to come. And anyone who was once a kid knows that the summer months cannot be mentioned without a nod to Camp. This would have been my 14th summer at Camp. Start-ing as a 7-year-old Family Camper in 2000 and finishing my second summer on staff last year, Camp undoubtedly became one of the most influential experiences in shap-ing my present self, which now includes sailing for the Badgers at the University of Wisconsin. From learning how to tie a square knot and earning my Boathand from Aiden Windy-banks (Windebank) and Nicky P (Nick Pearson) as a 9-year-old, to becoming a “Skipper” a few years later, Camp instilled a love of sailing in me that has ultimately lead me to a spot on the 19th ranked sailing team in the nation. Without Camp and all the experi-ences it gave me, whether it was riding the bilge boards, flipping the Catalina or participating in the ever-popular ‘Swim-gattas’, I am certain I would not have had this exciting opportunity Unfortunately, as my first year of college is wrapping up and my plans to attend medical school have become more of a reality, I have had to make the difficult decision to focus my efforts towards that goal and to not return to Camp this summer. While missing out on another sum-mer at my favorite place in the entire world makes me very sad, I know that eventually I will be back. And until that happens, I am reassured knowing that I will always have a piece of Camp with me every time I set sail with my Wisco teammates.

All the best this summer ~ Tom Sorenson

Introducing the 2013 Summer Management StaffCamp Olson is very fortunate and unique to have so many young people who are committed to continuing the Spirit of the Northwoods this summer. Many are former campers and CIT’s in their own right. They return as staff members to give back some of what they received from this special place. This is the spirit that keeps our traditions alive! Here are just a few of these wonderful people who will be sharing the Spirit of the Northwoods this summer with each and every camper that attends.

Dan Hodge steps into the Assistant Director position this summer at Camp Olson. He is a recent graduate from the University of Wisconsin at Madison where he majored in Envi-ronmental Studies. This is Dan’s 8th summer on staff and his 16th summer overall at Camp Olson! He brings an unmatched level of camp knowledge and stage presence to the sum-mer. Dan’s favorite activities at Camp are going on overnights, gardening, and skits, skits, skits. His hobbies are biking, baking, and books. Dan’s thoughts on Camp: “During my younger years at Camp I always found an attitude of acceptance and nurturing that brought me to feel confi dent in and enjoy being myself. I work to continue this tradition at Camp Olson and beyond. I keep coming back because I feel strongly that it is important for youth to learn this independence in a safe environment.”

Katherine Hauser returns for her 6th summer on staff and 2nd as our Program Director. This summer she will be the ultimate master of ceremonies throughout the summer. In May, Katherine will graduate from the University of Missouri with a degree in Journalism and minors in Psychology and Multicultural Studies.Katherine says, “Camp has always been the highlight of my year, and I am so happy to have the opportunity to reprise my role as Program Director this summer. Camp was the fi rst place to foster my passion for the outdoors and I hope to bring that same sense of excitement and curiosity for the natural world to campers this summer. I look forward to seeing you all for another wonderful and memorable summer at Camp Olson!”

Rebecca Spanier is returning for her 8th year on staff at Camp Olson this summer. 2013 will be her 2nd summer as the Female Counselor Coordinator. In this role, she will be helping to ensure that our female campers and counselors have the most positive experience possible during their time at Camp. She aims to help our counselors and campers to grow through the experience of camp in mind, body, and spirit. When not at Camp Olson, Rebecca lives in St. Cloud where she studies at St. John’s Univer-sity working on her Masters of Divinity (professional ministry degree) She hopes to one day work as a chaplain in a children’s hospital.

“I am incredibly excited for this summer because of all of the wonderful kids that I was able to meet last year that I will reconnect with, and for those I haven’t even met yet that I am sure to get to know. My favorite part of this job is the number of amazing people that I get to interact with-both campers and staff-every day.”

Erik Nielsen returns for his 3rd summer on staff at Camp Olson. This sum-mer he will serve as our Male Counselor Coordinator, where he will help male campers and counselors to bond and grow in the spirit of the Northwoods. Eric will graduate from Luther College (Decorah, IA) this spring with a BA in Politi-cal Science, where I played football and sang in the choir. Eric says of Camp: “I fell in love with Camp Olson starting as a two-year old in Duluth Cabin at Family Camp, and it hasn’t left my heart since. I love playing outside, playing music, and all things of or pertaining to Minnesota. I can’t wait to get underway with another exciting new challenge at Camp in what I know will be another unforgettable summer - after all, every summer so far has been the best one yet!”

Eric & and his father Skott Nielsen relived a moment of time last summer!

Camp Olson’s International Immersion Program

Each summer Camp Olson is host to children and staff from around the world who come to share in the Spirit of the Northwoods. The Internation-al Immersion Program allows youth the opportunity to gain language and cultural competency in a warm and accepting environment. The structure of our days, our supportive staff, and even our songs are all beneficial toward a child’s development of a second language. If you know of an overseas youth that might benefit from our program, have them contact us for details.

This summer we have partnered with the YMCA of Spain who will be sending 8-10 campers to Camp Olson YMCA for five weeks this summer.Marine Aquaronne is our French International Coordinator. She is avail-able to help international camper families through the process of registra-tion and transportation. She is fluent in French, Italian, and English. Ma-rine will return with our International campers this summer to help in the integration process and to facilitate a sharing of culture with our foreign friends. Marine is adept at pushing young people to practice their English skills. While at Camp, Marine will update parents of International camp-ers through email and a blog. Contact her at [email protected]. Currently, Marine is a Jr. and studies economics at the Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. Marine participated in both our LIT and CIT programsAlready for the 2013 summer we have enrolled 11 campers from France, 4 from Spain and one from Mexico.

If you have any friends with children visiting from overseas this summer, Camp Olson can provide an excellent cultural experience. Contact us to learn more!

LIT—“Why is leadership so important?” A leader is someone who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. –John Maxwell

The Camp Olson Leaders-in-Training program offers teens a 2-week session that is focused on all aspects of leader-ship. Through structured activities facilitated by inspiring role models LITs are pushed to find in themselves the positive qualities of a leader. They learn to support the group as a team and to put their lessons to use on the trail, while paddling through Voyageurs National Park. It is a journey that LITs take together that they will never forget.

Part of the LIT process is learning to understand the different ways that we can display leadership. While some leaders lead from the front and show the way, it also takes leadership within the group for a team to be successful. These are the people who lead by example. And there is also the importance of self-leadership. This is most important and comes first. When one learns to take initiative and to care for one’s self, they have much greater power to lead in a positive direction.

Camp Olson Leaders in Training work to understand and gain competence in all these facets. And it all happens while making life-long connections and memories with your fellow LITs. Do you know someone who would benefit from this special program down the path of the leader? Tell them about Camp Olson!

2013 Sessions available: June 16-29, July 7-20, and July 21-Aug 3 (full)

The names won’t change but the view will be spectacular for Willy and Yaqua cabins. The new cabins will be our largest cabins; complete with six bunk beds, fireplace, sitting area and of course plenty of space under the covered porch to leave your riding attire and boots!

Horseback Riding at Camp OlsonThis summer, we are excited to open 2 brand new riding cabins for our riding campers! These new cabins will replace the old and are located on the path between the Nature Center and the Corral. Riding Campers will now look out at the sun going down on the herd as they kick their boots off on the porch each evening!

Horseback riding is a true hallmark program at Camp Olson. From humble beginnings in a repurposed shed, the riding program has grown to encompass a beautiful barn and miles upon miles of scenic trails. Nearer to the barn, riders hone their skills in the arena practicing both Western and English and three different horse gaits. The benefits of riding are many: increased confidence, strength and balance. In addition, the rider learns to care for their horse and how to build a mutually beneficial relationship based on both trust and respect. There is also the opportunity for improving the rider’s self-regulation and the ability to stay calm and controlled.

The horses at the Big O Corral are not simply beasts of burden, but parts of the Camp Olson family. Who among you still remember that first horse that was gentle enough to allow you to be brave enough to climb into the saddle? Some of the herd has been carrying our campers for nearly a decade! The bond between rider and horse is a special thing. Indeed, many campers find that they are happy just to groom and be near their favorite horse whenever they have the chance.

At Camp this summer, there are a number of options for riders of all skill levels. We have Beginner Horseback Riding camp for young girls ages 9-11. Beginner riders spend 3 mornings of their session at the Corral learning and riding in a controlled environment. When campers have gained control and comfort, they will also get out on the trails. Horseback Riding camp is available to both boys and girls ages 11-15 and offers a progressive awards system based on skill and com-petence in riding. These awards are earned both on the trail and in the ring through a variety of activities every morning at the Corral. Girl Trail Riders is a unique 2-week experience that is serious about getting out on the trail. Trail riders work toward riding all of camp’s trail system and practice more advanced riding skills and techniques.

Come ride with us this summer!
