Pastoral letter

Dear FriendsWhile VE Day marked the end of the war in Europe in May 1945, many thousands of armed forces personnel were still involved in bitter fighting in the Far East. Victory over Japan would come at a heavy price and Victory over Japan Day (VJ Day) marks the day Japan surrendered on 15 August 1945, which in effect, ended the Second World War.

Although some of the restrictions which prevented us from commemorating the 75th anniversary of VE Day have now been eased, at the time of writing, the services we had anticipated in our churches sadly seem unlikely to be able to take place. (Look out for further announcements.)

Even if we are unable to commemorate those who paid the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf as we would wish, we have a lasting symbol at which we can stand and quietly say our thanks. The war memorials in the villages and towns throughout the nation stand as a permanent reminder of the men and women who gave their lives in action but as we remember them we should also never forget those who returned bearing the scars of all they had witnessed and endured throughout those horrific years.

Few of us are called upon to give our lives for our country but we are all called to work towards making the world a better place. As we journey together through these months of the Covid-19 pandemic we have been made aware of acts of generosity bravery and love offered by so many. The inspirational walk of Captain Tom, the NHS workers who have cared for victims of the virus and died themselves whilst doing so, the thousands of ordinary men and women who have quietly continued to provide the services needed to keep the country operating and safe.

Those who returned from the Far East came back hoping that the country and the world would be a better place in the future. As we slowly emerge from the pandemic may we work together to bring light to those whose lives continue to be shrouded in the darkness of fear, poverty or loneliness.

“For it is the God who said “let light shine out of darkness’, who has shone in our hearts to give the lights of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Cor 4:6)

God Bless

Burwash and District Flower Arrangement Club

Since our last Flower Club report in May the effects of the pandemic continue to impact on us all. Because of this the Flower Club committee has decided to cancel the rest of our programme for 2020. This means the demonstrations in September and November plus the October workshop will not take place. I know that this is a disappointment for us all but we feel you would prefer certainty to ‘will we/won’t we’ hold those meetings. We will keep you updated each month through the magazine.

Our aim is for us to all meet up again in February for our AGM (I think the Chairman’s annual report will be quite brief!) and to then plan for our 60th anniversary celebrations. Until then we can at least enjoy our gardens which are revelling in the rain as I write this.

There is definitely a feeling of ‘light at the end of the tunnel,’ as we can now visit the hairdresser as well as the pub.

Having extended our membership year by 3 months, free of charge, until the end of August, we are looking forward to a fresh start in September. Several of our speakers for the coming months are prepared to deliver their talks via Zoom. Only a few months ago this would have been unthinkable but many of our members are using Zoom, or similar, for their interest groups, fitness classes and for keeping in contact with their families. Our September speaker, Ian Keable, is offering his talk, ‘The History of the Cartoon,’ via Zoom.

If you are interested in joining the U3A for this talk or any of our activities or interest groups, please visit the website for details. https://u3asites.org.uk/mayfield

Stained-glass windows of my mind

It’s funny how some images stick in your mind and keep popping up unbidden, sometimes years later. In the same way that certain smells evoke memories, these images bring up the same emotion you felt the first time you saw them. I was reminded of this, as I’m currently in North Yorkshire, staying near Kettlewell, where one of the stained-glass windows in the church is particularly poignant. I first saw it nearly 30 years ago and every time I return here, I feel compelled to go and see it.It’s the east window, with three panels. The left panel depicts a soldier on sentry duty on the battlefield. The centre panel depicts a guardian angel standing over discarded military equipment. The right panel depicts a soldier by a camp fire. It is a memorial to the only son of a local family, Charles Cutcliffe Hyne, who was killed in the First World War at the age of 18. It’s deeply moving.

When I was very young, I remembered seeing an enormous window depicting Christ with his hands held out wide. For many years I had no idea where that window was, but the image stayed with me. In my mid-teens we moved to Ashburton, Devon and shortly afterwards visited nearby Buckfast Abbey. I still remember the shock of seeing the window and realising I had found it again.

The window was designed by one of the monks of the Abbey, Dom Charles Norris (1909 – 2004), who studied at the Royal College of Art before joining the Benedictine order. He designed and supervised the window as part of the restoration of the abbey, which had been destroyed during the dissolution of monasteries in 1539. The new abbey church, complete with the eight metre East window in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, was consecrated in 1932 and completed in 1938. Buckfast Abbey is still a very special place to me, and indeed is where my father’s ashes are interred.

My formative years in Devon were spent in Budleigh Salterton where I spent what felt like vast amounts of time cleaning the brass pulpit and lectern in St Peter’s church. The tedium of that (and the sermons!) was relieved by the joy of

looking at the window depicting St Francis of Assisi surrounded by animals and birds (red squirrel was my favourite).

Whenever I’ve got ages to wait for a train at Charing Cross I nip into St Martin-in-the-Fields in the hope of finding a rehearsal for a concert going on, and where I am fascinated by the weirdness of the East window. It was designed by Iranian artist Shirazeh Houshiary in 2008 to replace a stained-glass window that was shattered by bombs in World War Two. It’s an abstract design of grids and crosses which warps towards a central opening, creating lots of light in the church. The window is built within a stainless steel framework composed of a number of handmade glass panels, each of which is etched with fragments of Houshiary’s paintings to create a subtle feathery pattern on both sides of the glass. Very clever.

There are of course thousands of amazing stained-glass windows in churches, temples and mosques throughout the world, many designed by famous artists, some in unlikely places (think Marc Chagall and Tudeley churvch, for example). Many are commissioned as memorials for loved ones or to commemorate events, as well

as the more traditional depiction of saints or symbolic motifs.

Ancient Egyptians were probably the first people to discover glass while making their vessels; the oldest examples of man-made glass are Egyptian coloured glass beads from around 2700 BC. The creation of stained-glass in Southwest Asia stems from ancient times – formulations for producing coloured glass in Nineveh date back to the seventh century BC. Stained-glass windows were first used by well to do Romans in their homes in the first century AD.

Throughout its thousand-year history, the term stained-glass has been applied almost exclusively to the windows of churches and other significant religious buildings. Whereas the purpose of most windows is to allow a view of the outside and let light into a building, the purpose of stained-glass windows is to beautify buildings, control light, allow privacy and often to tell a story.

Stained-glass is glass coloured by adding metallic salts during its manufacture, and usually then further decorating it in various ways. The coloured glass is crafted into stained-glass windows in

which small pieces of glass are arranged to form patterns or pictures, held together, traditionally by strips of lead and supported by a rigid frame.

It is complex and technically challenging: a window must fit snugly into the space for which it is made, must resist wind and rain, and also, especially in the larger windows, must support its own considerable weight. In the early Gothic era (from about 950 to 1240) un-traceried windows (ie ones without decorative stonework) demanded

large expanses of glass which had to be supported by robust iron frames, such as at the eastern end of Canterbury Cathedral or Chartres Cathedral. As Gothic architecture became more ornate, windows grew larger and were divided into sections by vertical shafts and tracery of stone.

In Britain, evidence of stained-glass windows and monasteries can be found from the 7th century.

As an art form, it reached its height in the Middle Ages, when it was used to illustrate Bible stories for the largely illiterate population.

Of course, stained-glass is not just for religious buildings, it has often been used as a decorative element in public buildings, initially in places of learning, government or justice but increasingly in other public and commercial places such as banks, retailers and railway stations. Another favourite example of mine is Novoslobodskaya station, on the Moscow metro system. Several stations are incredibly decorated but this one has many stained-glass windows, which creates the most extraordinary effect. Just don’t even try to compare it to anything on the Northern line!

Deborah Knox Watson

PS My favourite window in St Bartholomew’s is the Millennium window of two lights (2001) depicting St Bartholomew and the Parable of the Talents. It was designed by Meg Lawrence and the colours are gorgeous.

BURWASH VILLAGE HALL

Charity registration no: 305350

We are nearly there! In mid-July, a site meeting took place at the Hall between Tom Appleby and the contractors, to plan for the work to replace our beautiful Oriel windows. Work should start in the second week of August, but there has already been some initial exploratory work on the internal wall under the windows. The windows should be installed at the end of August, giving time for them to be made.

One of the requirements for receiving one of the grants is to set up a Burwash Village Hall website. We have been looking at various examples to give us ideas of the best format. A second requirement is to have an event at the Hall to celebrate the completion of the work. This, of course, will depend on many factors, including exactly when we do re-open following the Covid-19 pandemic. We continue to receive guidance on all the necessary steps before we do make that decision, and I am sure there will be many more!

I am very grateful to David Axford for masterminding the grant applications helping us achieve our target, and to Tom Appleby for dealing with the contractors and planning permissions. We couldn’t have done it without them! I am also very grateful to David and Rita for keeping the Hall clean during its closure, and to Mike Ashdown for dealing with several slight problems arising from the closure.

The Blacksmith’s Tea and Coffee Shop

Burwash High Street used to be a bustling thoroughfare with shops, public houses and other commercial establishments lining the road. Over time, most have departed and those that remain are the backbone of our community. The closure of the estate agents in 2019 gave us the opportunity to return a much-needed Café to the High Street.

On Wednesday 5th August The Blacksmith’s Tea and Coffee Shop in the High Street will be open for business. Having completely renovated the old building, which was once The Blacksmith’s Inn, and brought it back to life, the Burwash Community Interest Company is handing it over to the new owner: Julie Chambers. She writes:

Hello everyone! My name is Julie Chambers and I am absolutely delighted to have been invited to run The Blacksmith’s Tea and Coffee Shop which is opening in Burwash High Street shortly.

Two years ago, myself and my husband visited friends in Burwash on our honeymoon. We fell in love with the village, the people and the beautiful surrounding countryside. So, we decided to move! During the moving process the company I worked for decided to relocate from Leatherhead to Glasgow. This led to a decision to be made of relocating to Glasgow or take redundancy and carry on with our move to Burwash. No real contest, Burwash won and we have never looked back. I cannot imagine being anywhere else now. I have made many friends, taken up new hobbies

Village Hall

and embraced the way of life in the countryside.

I am so looking forward to and excited about the opening of the Tea & Coffee Shop. My aim is to create a warm and welcoming community hub where everyone is welcome. Along with the tea and coffee there will be cold drinks, light bites and a selection of delicious home baked goodies. Our four-legged friends are also welcome and there will be water and a complimentary doggie treat for them! The Tea and Coffee Shop has been funded by the community and I look forward to seeing you all as soon as we are open.

Because of the restrictions that apply to all cafés, there will need to be some limits on how many can be seated but you will be assured of a warm welcome.

We all want to make The Blacksmith’s a focus for life in Burwash and a friendly place for those visiting the area. There have been many tea shops over the years, and of course the Old Orchard Nursery in Burwash Common and The Bistro in Etchingham are well established and very popular with locals and visitors, but now the High Street can also offer a place to relax, chat and enjoy local hospitality.

Gleanings from the Burwash Parish Magazine

Continuing my perusal of old Broadsheets, I came across two articles that were reproduced in the 1980s, which give food for thought. From the parish records of January 1890

At the commencement of a New Year we naturally look ack to what has taken place in our parish during the past twelve months, and as we do so there is much to be thankful for. In the early Spring the terrible and fatal epidemic influenza again visited the towns and villages in our neighbourhood, but we, in Burwash, were comparatively free from it, and only a few, not serious cases, occurred in the village.

Throughout the past year the work on farms has been plentiful, and wages paid at a higher rate than that in 1888 and 1889. When hop-picking finished in October of last year, the general impression was that the labourer would have to face a long Winter with slack work and reduced wage. So far this has not proved true, and the open, mild weather has enabled the employer to keep on hands. All these are blessings which other districts of the country have not experienced, especially where the inferior harvest and depressed prices in agriculture are causing very serious distress.

From the parish records of June 1892

We like to hear good news of our young friends who are away from home and this month we give some extracts from a letter of a young man service on HMS Undaunted, commanded by Captain Lord C Beresford. After describing Alexandria, Suda Bay and Athens, the letter goes on to say,

“I am now an Able Seaman, and the Captain told me to try and get on all I could, as he would help me if I helped myself. My average pay a day is two shillings, and I am going for Acting Seaman Gunner, which is another twopence a day. I don’t think that is bad for a young chap of nineteen years of age, do you? I think I should not have done so well if I had stopped out of the Navy, as people wanted me to. I like the Navy and think it is an honourable calling as anyone can wish for. I very often think that some of the lads of Burwash ought to give it a trial, for if they look after themselves they would soon get on. It is like this – I am coxswain of our steam pinnace, and one of the crew is old enough to be my father, but he has to do as I tell him, and that is all through drink that has helped him down!!”

These extracts from the letter just show what a chance steady young men have in the Navy. Two shillings and twopence a day, including Sunday is 15s 2d a week, besides clothes, lodgings and food all found, so that these wages represent pocket money or savings for a rainy day.

Independent Examiner

The PCC and the Trustees of The Friends of St. Bartholomew’s are looking to appoint an Independent Examiner following the death of Mr. Alan Burton. The appointment requires a review of the annual financial statements of both the PCC and the Friends with a view to forming an opinion and reporting whether or not any material matters cause the examiner to believe that accounting records were not kept in accordance with statutory requirements, or that the financial statements do not accord with those records.

An accounting qualification is not required, but financial numeracy is clearly desirable. Full training will be given and fees are payable.

Members of the PCC and Trustees or members of the Friends do not qualify for this appointment

1ST BURWASH & ETCHINGHAM SCOUT GROUP

Planning for a return

All sections are undergoing a Covid Risk Assessment and plan for to return to running Beavers, Cubs & Scouts in September.

This a very comprehensive review of how we can operate, to ensure we can run safely as we can.

We have all faced a very difficult time.

Once we return to normal, we will still need help in our Cubs and Beavers section for Leader roles and a desperately needed ‘behind the scenes’ clerical role.

BURWASH COMMUNITY INTERNET CAFÉ NEWS

This time it really is Good News!At long last we are open! At least from Monday 3 August 2020 we will be open, on an ‘appointment only’ basis so you can come along with your problems or use the PCs or laptops. Or, bring your own device. We have deep cleansed the room and the equipment. We volunteers will be wearing masks and will clean the room/equipment between visitors, hence the appointment only. The room will also be set up in line with Covid-19 social distancing rules. We will do our best to keep everyone safe, and ask you to do the same by giving me a call on my mobile (07818 648038) to make an appointment – time and duration to suit you wherever possible.

I have put up a number of posters around our three villages as well as outside the

Open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, (except Bank Holidays) 10am to 1pm

Based at the rear of the car park next to The BearSponsored by Burwash Parish Council

Community Internet Café to keep you updated. We have to make sure we only have two or three people in the Internet Café at any one time, hence the need to book time slots.

Don’t Forget

We must follow NHS guidelines; do not leave home if you or someone you live with has any Covid symptoms, i.e. high temperature, a new continuous cough, a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste.

Interactive Workshops

Unfortunately, we have not been able to hold our popular Interactive workshops so far this year, but if you have a problem our friendly volunteers will be only too pleased to help. Who knows we may even be able to fit in a workshop before the year end – fingers crossed!

Burwash, Burwash Common, Burwash Weald and surrounding areasRecent local incidents

Overnight Wednesday 1st to Thursday 2nd July outbuildings at a farm in Burwash Common were broken in to and property was stolen.

Please check your security for outbuildings, sheds, garages etc. regularly. If you have security lights you should check these haven’t had bulbs loosened or removed, sensors taped over or other fittings tampered with during the day so that the lights don’t function after dark.

There have been a few reports of suspicious people and vehicles in the Burwash Common and Burwash Weald areas Wednesday 8th July to Friday 10th. I haven’t heard of any thefts or other problems over that period but there is a cell phone snapshot of one vehicle taken by a switched-on local person if anything had been reported.

Current trends

Police are warning about bogus HMRC callers again. Elderly and vulnerable people across Sussex are again being

Going Forward

Looking on the positive side of the pandemic, a lot more people have learnt that technology can help us stay in contact with friends and loved ones easily despite distance, via Skype, Zoom, WhatsApp etc. Going forward I also think a lot more people will be working from home from time to time, and even some kiddies may be schooled at home. Normal life as we knew it may have changed, but it is not all bad news! Technology can help us, and we are here to help you get on-line! So give me a call and I/we look forward to seeing you soon!

Stay safe and healthy, and we hope to see you in the not too distant future.

Lesley Elmslie - volunteer

warned to be wary of phone calls from fraudsters pretending to be from HM Customs and Revenue (HMRC). The bogus callers claim the targeted person is wanted for tax evasion and is arrestable on warrant unless they pay a cash sum - sometimes up to £4,000 - to clear their ‘debt’.

Contacting the Police

If you genuinely feel a situation needs immediate Police attendance always dial 999 and give as much information as you can about the location and circumstances.

For non-urgent matters you can contact Sussex Police by email at [email protected] use the non-emergency number 101 (101 calls cost 15p from landlines or mobiles) or online at www.sussex.police.uk which has been updated to make reporting simpler and more effective.

If something strikes you as odd or out of place please make a record and you may be able to help if a crime or incident is discovered at a later time.

Police often seek dash cam footage after a serious crash or criminal incident.

Burwash Parish Council Matters - August 2020

Welcome to new Councillors

Dominie Stemp has lived in Burwash for 30 years - 9 in Burwash Weald and 21 in Burwash Common. Before that she lived in Stonegate. Dominie is currently on the COVID-19 volunteer WhatsApp group for Burwash and Etchingham, and was a volunteer at the Internet Cafe for nearly 2 years.

Fiona Hosein has been a resident of Burwash for 17 years. She has worked in education: as a Nursery School teacher at Kiplings Pre-School (Burwash); an Individual Needs Assistant at Dallington Primary School; and currently the School Secretary and Clerk to Governors at Burwash Primary School.

We welcome them onto the Council and look forward to working with them.

Keeping in Touch

The Council is exploring different ways of keeping in touch with the communities. We recognise the importance of the

local Parish Magazines, and of course there is the Burwash Parish website and e-bulletin, but these are not used as much as we would wish, so the website is being revamped to make it easier to navigate, and easier to update. The Burwash e-bulletin has just over 300 subscribers but we would like more, so that we can keep people better informed. By going to the front page of burwashparish.org.uk you can subscribe and receive regular updates to your email address.

However, not everyone has access to the internet or indeed wants to use it, so we are now planning an occasional ‘Mail Drop’ that will enable everyone to get essential information in print. It’s quite expensive, but we think it’s important for everyone to be kept in touch and be able to contribute to the important discussions the Council is engaged in.

Businesses need our support

This has been a difficult time for most of us, and many of our local businesses have been particularly hard hit. We would like to produce a Business Directory which would be available to everyone in Burwash. As a Council, we can’t make recommendations

or endorse products, but we think it would be a helpful guide to what is available in the area. We have taken details of those who have advertised in the Magazines and on the Burwash Community Facebook Page, but if you run a business, no matter how big or small, with many employees or just yourself, please get in touch so that you can be included, if you would find that helpful. Contact: [email protected].

Car Parks

If you use the public car park at the Bear Inn, you need to be aware that Rother District Council has introduced parking restrictions which limit the time that you can leave your car. 40 parking spaces will be limited to 2 hours in any period of 4 hours, between 8am and 6pm on Mondays to Saturdays. These will be indicated with signs or surface markings. Of the remaining spaces, parking will be limited to 9 hours, between 6am and 9pm but you can leave the car park and return after one hour. There is no parking limit on Sundays or at all other times.

Burwash Parish Council has been in negotiations with Rother District Council for some years in order to take over responsibility for the car parks and the toilet in Burwash and these discussions are ongoing. It has written to the District Council asking that no changes are affected until the car park negotiations are concluded.

At present, however, the car parks and any regulations that apply to them are the responsibility of the District Council. Although these changes came into effect on 1st July, as of the time of writing, there have been no markings or signs indicating to which parking places these restrictions apply. We will keep you updated on the e-bulletin.

Cllr Brian Newman

Burwash Weald and Common Memorial Fund Playing Field - Covid- 19 update

Adult Exercise Equipment – open

• The equipment will not be cleaned for you. Use your own hand sanitiser before and after use.

• Please observe social distancing of 2 metres or one metre plus (face covering) if other users are present.

• The use of the equipment is at your own risk.

Children’s Play Area – closed

During the lockdown was an ideal time to lift the flooring in the children’s play area as it was deteriorating. It now needs levelling and the flooring replacing, so the area will not reopen until this has been completed.

Cricket resumed with Covid-19 guidelines and risk assessments in place.

The Pavilion – available but only within clear guidelines and Risk Assessments which you can find on the website burwashcommonpavilion.

September Fete - cancelled as it is too soon for a large gathering of people. Hopefully we will make up for it in September 2021.
