AUGUST 2014 | VILLAGEWALK WIRE 5

Dehydration unfortunately can accompany the fun days of summer – especially in hot and muggy Florida. The reason? When you’re active in the heat, you sweat – which is your body’s attempt to cool itself. But you have to replace that fluid to keep your system healthy.

If you don’t, you can suffer the warning signs of dehydration – dizziness, headache, dry mouth, fatigue and little or no urine. And left untreated, dehydration can lead to serious complications, including kidney failure, seizures and even death.

Elderly people are especially susceptible to dehydration because as you age, your sense of thirst can disappear. Plus, many seniors take medications that can cause dehydration.

By the time you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. So here are some ways to stay healthfully hydrated indoors and out:

• Count your glasses of water. The rule of thumb is six to eight 8 ounce glasses of water each day. This is a good place to start, but you may need more depending on your size or level of physical activity.

• Carry a refillable bottle with you as you exercise outside. You can also plan a running route that has water fountains along the way in case you need to refill.

• Like everything else, we all have different tastes in water. Like your water ice cold? Freeze a bottle and then take it out in the morning. As the ice melts, you’ll have refreshing cold water through much of the day.

• Find water boring? Try adding fruits and vegetables to make it flavored – but not filled with sugar and salt. Cucumbers, citrus, strawberries and kiwi make nice additions. Fresh mint and basil add flavor as well. Experiment until you find a flavor you love.

• Make it a habit to never pass a water fountain at work without taking a sip.• Remember, not all fluids are created equal. Caffeine can dehydrate you

so caffeinated sodas and coffee aren’t as good as water. Alcohol can also cause dehydration. So don’t fool yourself into thinking a beer is helping you on the hydration front.

HOA | MATTERS WITH KIM

Hi Everyone,

Time for our monthly update! We are continuing to push through our 2014 reserve projects. Our painting project is coming along and very close to completion. Along with our scheduled Townhomes and Villas in Phase One, we have also painted the Padua / Barletta dividing wall. Joe spent a couple days on a high lift and touched up our Beautiful Signature Clock Tower. Next up, we will be addressing the Red Truncated Domes throughout the Community, also known as Alert Tiles. We will be working on our 2014 Reserve Study update this month as well. During the last quarter of the year, we will addressing the cracks in our Townhome Alleyways, which has also been part of our reserves. We are very excited to have had and will continue to have such a productive year! At our Board Meeting, late June, Carlos Gregory, our board president, asked me to share the presentation for those who were not able to attend. Please find the presentation that we went over on this night by clicking on the following link. https://www.dropbox.com/s/yx4fmfsrvymlxw9/BOD%202014%20presentation%2006%2024%202014.pdf. I want to remind everyone, that the Board is currently seeking volunteers to serve on two committees. We have one open seat on our Architectural Committee and we are also looking to form our Compliance Committee. Why join these Committees?

Committees serve a number of important roles to our Community. Committees serve as a training ground for future association leaders, a conduit through which the Board receives “grass root” input - opinions and attitudes of owners, a vehicle through which Board actions are explained, they enhance the effectiveness of the Board of Directors by providing research analysis and advice needed for policy decisions, and they can be an instrument for initial implementation of Board policies such as with the Architectural Review Committee. Committees are an important linkage between the Board of Directors, The Management Company and owners but in order to be effective committees need members! Owner input, involvement and participation is a must. Please consider participating in the association process and volunteering to serve on an association committee. Our community needs you! I hope you all enjoy yourselves this month, as many of us prepare for our kiddos to return to school. To the families of the commu-nity, I wish you a very successful school year!

Warmest Regards,

Kim MortonYour Community Manager

JENGA KEYCHAINWritten by: Sarah Ortega

Family trips create the fondest memories. This craft will keep vacation memories close to your heart and in the palm of your hand! Collect travel maps from your favorite destinations to pair with recycled board game pieces. Creativity and imagination are key to unlocking the treasured memories of your family travels.

Materials:• Jenga board game piece or other small wooden block

• Decorative paper; such as, travel map, sheet music, wrapping paper, book page, etc.

• Screw eye

• Key ring

• Round nose pliers

• Mod Podge or other glue agent

• Craft brush

• Pencil

• Scissors

Directions:1. Use pliers to secure screw eye into top of wooden block.2. Using a pencil, trace the shape of the block onto map or paper; cut to size. If desired, cut paper slightly smaller than block to allow for thin wooden border. Repeat to achieve four sides (or desired amount).3. Apply thin layer of Mod Podge or glue agent to back of each paper and place onto sides of wooden block. Smooth out paper to prevent air bubbles.4. Allow a few minutes to dry completely. Then, apply top coat of Mod Podge to create a protective seal. Note: Glue appears white, but will dry clear.5. Attach key ring and keys

Hello everyone,

School starts up this month! Just a reminder that the bus stop is inside of the community in front of the basketball court. Please observe the stop signs at the intesection of Insular Lane and James Bay Drive. When any deliveries are being made to your home, please make sure to inform the shipping company that the delivery truck must enter through the main entrance, which is the second entrance when entering from either 417 or Narcoossee. The must see the gate attendant to gain entrance. Same goes for any visitors and vendors. If you have a company come in on a regular rotation let the Town Center know to add them to your guest list for easy and quick access. As a reminder, the vehicle gates at both the East and West entrances have a pedestrian gate to enter and leave the property. The code in 1234. Additionally, please remember when approaching the gates to enter the property stay at a minimum of 3 feet away from the curb so the laser reader can properly read your barcode decal. As always, if you are pulling any type of trailer you must bring it through the main entrance and enter via the guard gate (left side). The East and West vehicle gates are for one vehicle entry at a time and can be damaged by pulling a trailer.

I hope everyone has a great month!

It’s that time of year. Summer break is almost over and kids are getting ready to go back to school. This month we will focus on some key essentials to make your school year productive and healthy! !Reducing your toxic load is crucial to staying well. !Little changes such as crowding out sugary soft drinks and flavored milk can be replaced with fresh water. It will keep you and your family healthy and hydrated. Add a drop or two of Lemon or

Peppermint essential oil to help with healthy energy and a positive attitude. Make sure you use a class container as the citrus oils will break down any plastic or petroleum based container. !Good hand washing is key to staying well. Unfortunately, all those over-the-counter hand sanitizers are loaded with alcohol and toxic chemicals. Over time, these chemicals can build up in your system causing inflammation and pain. Here’s a great natural solution for your hands. !Cleansing Hand Gel: • 5 tablespoons aloe vera gel • 4 tablespoons water • ¼ teaspoon vitamin E oil • 8-10 drops Protective Blend !In a bowl, combine aloe vera gel and vitamin E oil. Add 8-10 drops of Protective Blend. Add water and mix well. Add more or less water based on the desired consistency. Pour into small container for use. !Eating whole foods and supplements are key to a healthy foundation. Multivitamins and minerals help with the daily nutrition requirements. Be mindful of those sugary cartoon shape vitamins or thick coated supplements. Seek natural solutions and supplements. !Keeping the kids and adults on task can be sidelined when energy levels are low. Apply Peppermint, Wild Orange or a Focus Blend to the bottoms of the feet and back of neck. Cup your hands in front of your nose and inhale the aroma. Here is one of my favorite blends: • 10 mL Roller Bottle: fill ⅔ with Fractionate Coconut Oil, then add… • Peppermint:10 drops • Clove: 5 drops • Cinnamon: 5 drops • Frankincense: 5 drops • Wild Orange: 10 drops !Remember, all essential oils are NOT created equally and can be toxic. At dōTERRA we pride ourselves in offering only Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils that are free from fillers, synthetics, herbicides, pesticides and other harmful ingredients. They are pure, chemical-free and toxin-free. !For more scientific research visit AromaticScience.com. Join me next month, as we focus on more essential oils and their therapeutic effects. Contact me for your free consultation for natural solutions to your health. !

What Does Our Management Company Do?

We receive non-compliance notices from the management company. We send our assessment checks to the management company. We report common area maintenance problems to the management company. So, the management company makes all of the important decisions regarding our community, right? WRONG! The management function of our association is administrative in nature. The board is the principle policy-making body which sets policies, standards, procedures, programs and budgets. Management's function is to carry out these board decisions. The board has the authority and the power to set policies and standards to carry these policies out. It may delegate its authority to implement its decisions, but it cannot delegate its responsibility to see that they are implemented and implemented properly. Management implements decisions of the board and administers the programs, services and activities of the association within the policies and guidelines set by the board. When communicating with our management company, please keep in mind that although the board has given them the authority to make many of the day-to-day operational decisions, some requests are going to need the approval of the board of directors. Here are some tips to help facilitate your communication with the board:ü When in doubt about your request, put it in writing.ü Attend the Open Forum portion of the Board of Directors meeting.ü If your request is "non-emergency" in nature, please be patient. In

most cases, management will research the issue for the board so that the board can make the best educated, business decision possible.

ü If you have any questions whatsoever, do not hesitate to call our association manager.

22 VILLAGEWALK WIRE | AUGUST 2014

Since November, 2013, 613 dresses and dolls have been sent to needy families. Last month 125 dresses were sent to the Dominican Republic. And we are so proud to share with you the fact that 47 dresses came from our youngest volunteer, Addi White who is 10 years old. Addi sewed on visits with her grandmother, Donna White until she had enough to fill a box. We’re proud of you, Addi! As mentioned in previous VillageWalk Newsletters, Burnett Honors College at the University of Central Florida is involved with the Honors Study-Abroad Program. One of their projects is an Educational/Community Center at Intabazwe, South Africa. We were able to send 105 dresses to the Center when the UCF group traveled there in May. Pictured below are some of the students and teachers at the Center.

Come join us on any Thursday morning from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Town Center.

Making Any Changes?Don't Forget To Obtain Approval First!

Our governing documents require that the Association approve all proposed architectural changes before any work is started. The importance of this requirement cannot be overstated when you consider the reason for such a restriction. Membership in a community association requires compliance to pre-existing conditions and regulations. One of the biggest advantages of these conditions is the protection of our property values. The value of your home is directly related to the condition, appearances and aesthetics of our community as a whole. By regulating the kind and types of architectural changes that can be done, our Association is better able to maintain our property values. Getting our Association to approve all proposed architectural changes is not just a good idea to protect your investment, it is a requirement! If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our Association Manager.
