From the Pastor’s Desk Prayer Helps for People who fidget I am a person who fidgets. It is difficult for me to be very still. This impacts my prayer life some. For just as I fidget, it is also difficult for me to quiet my mind when I pray. I tend to have all these thoughts run through my mind—some related to my prayers, others not so much. So I work at trying to quiet my mind and be still to improve my prayer life. One of the things that helps me to do this is if I have something to focus upon. At times I have used an image (like an icon) that helps me focus. Another item (a prayer rock) that I was given a couple of years ago while on the mission trip to Pensacola, Florida with the youth of the congregation has also assisted me in this endeavor. The prayer rock is a basic smooth rock that you hold within your hands while you prayer. There isn’t anything magical about the rock, but for me holding it and moving it in my hand gives my hand something to do and it does help me to quiet my mind and be more focused up- on my conversation with God. I think that because I am intentionally fidgeting, it helps me to not be as distracted oth- erwise. As I thought about the prayer rock, I remembered a comment one of my theology professors at seminary made. He talked about the rosary as a prayer tool for people who fidget. If you are not familiar with the rosary it is something that many Roman Catholics use for prayer. A rosary is string of beads along with a crucifix. The way that you use a rosary is that you hold it in your hands and as you touch/feel a bead you pray a specific prayer (or part of a prayer). For example: the Lord’s Prayer, the Jesus Prayer, the magnificat, etc. There have been some people who have adapted the Roman Catholic rosary for use by Lutherans. Below is one example of a Lutheran rosary that comes from Lutheran pastor Jordan Cooper found on his website (JustandSinner.com): 1.Hold the crucifix and meditate on the cross. Recite John 3:16 or another verse. 2.Continue meditating on the cross until you get to the first large bead 3.At the medal, recall the Holy Trinity 4.Throughout the next beads, meditate on the Ten Commandments, remembering where you have fallen short 5.Meditate on the Apostle's Creed, recalling God's great acts of salvation 6.Pray the Lord's Prayer 7.Meditate on Holy Baptism using Mathew 28:19, Acts 2:38, or another verse about Baptism 8. Meditate on Confession, reciting Psalm 25:11, the Jesus prayer, or another verse of confession 9. Meditate on the Sacrament of the Altar reciting the words of institution 10. End holding the cross, with the invocation and make the sign of the cross This or something similar can be used to help you focus and be more intentional in your prayer life. Prayer Helps for People who fidget I am a person who fidgets. It is difficult for me to be very still. This impacts my prayer life some. For just as I fidget, it is also difficult for me to quiet my mind when I pray. I tend to have all these thoughts run through my mindsome

related to my prayers, others not so much.

So I work at trying to quiet my mind and be still to improve my prayer life. One of the things that helps me to do this

is if I have something to focus upon.

There isnt anything magical about the rock, but for me holding it and moving it in my hand gives my hand something to do and it does help me to quiet my mind and be more focused up-on my conversation with God. I think that because I am intentionally fidgeting, it helps me to not be as distracted oth-

    erwise.

For example: the Lords Prayer, the Jesus Prayer, the magnificat, etc. There have been some people who have adapted the Roman Catholic rosary for use by Lutherans. Below is one example of a Lutheran rosary that comes from

Lutheran pastor Jordan Cooper found on his website (JustandSinner.com):

1.Hold the crucifix and meditate on the cross. Meditate on the Sacrament of the Altar reciting the words of institution

    10. End holding the cross, with the invocation and make the sign of the cross

This or something similar can be used to help you focus and be more intentional in your prayer life.

Keep on praying in the new year!

On Sunday, August 17th at 6:30 p.m., parents and kids are invited to come and meet the teachers as well as see the classroom. This year we have 2 new teachers on staff. Jennifer Duncan comes from Brownstown and has over 15 years of teaching experience in the preschool field. Shan-non (Meyer) Garrison will be teaching as well. We are truly excited about the upcoming year and look forward to teaching all of these little ones! The first day of preschool is Monday, August 18th. Preschool Chapel will be held on Wednesday, August 27 at 9:15 a.m.

    Preschool Back to School Night

  • August 3rd: Text Ruth 4:1-22

This reading brings to a close the story of Ruth and Naomi. This story that began with loss and hopelessness is now filled with new life. We hear of Ruth bearing a son, Obed. The book of Ruth ends with a genealogy that connects this story to the one whom God anoints as kingDavid.

    August 10th: TextI John 1:1-4

We begin today a series on the book of I John. This short book re-proclaims the message of the Gospel ac-cording to John in a changed context. While the Gospel of John emphasizes the divine side of Jesus, some took this emphasis too far and the letter or I John lifts up the humanity of Jesus. I John focuses upon the em-bodied word of God and calls for an embodied faith.

    August 17th: Text I John 1:5-2:2

This lesson should sound familiarpart of the order of confession and absolution comes from this part of I John. It looks at the inconsistency between words and actions (saying we have fellowship with God, yet walk-ing in darkness). The author calls us to take seriously our sin and acknowledging it before God.

    August 24th: Text I John 4:1-6

The authors central theme in this chapter is whether spiritual claims are centered in the Word that Jesus em-bodies. We are encouraged to listen to God; for when we are centered in God we will know the spirit of truth and the spirit of error.

    August 31st: Text I John 4:7-21

The end of chapter 4 reflects upon love. The essential thought is that we love not because of anything we do, but because God first loved us. And since God loves us, we should love one another. When this happens we know that God lives in us because of this love.

Upcoming Worship Below are the lessons and some thoughts about the upcoming Sundays.

Please take some time to look over the lesson and reflect upon the questions in preparation of the upcoming weeks in worship.

    Fair

We will have a display in the fellowship hall dur-ing Sunday School so that all church members can see everyones work.

    The congregation is invited

to the 50th anniversary open house

    for Paul and Ruth Newkirk

since a spinal cord injury left her almost totally para-

ues to give praise to God during her recovery. She

and her husband Shannon are now caring for their

two young daughters without full-time assistance!! A

recent Facebook status of Helens states, Best

on its way to enjoying life again! Thanks so much to

tinue to keep them in your prayers.

    OF THE MONTH

Please DO NOT put plastic bags in St. Pauls recy-

cling container. Plastic bags easily get caught in

    Rumpkes single-stream recycling equipment and

cause delays in the process. If you are in the habit

of collecting your recyclable items in plastic bags,

please empty the contents into the recycling contain-

er and reuse your bag or recycle it elsewhere.
