Pretty soon it will beback to school for our oneyear old school system.Funny how in your life theautumn, which has been a

time of ending and harvest, has actually become a sea-son of new beginnings. Allyour life through thegrades up through college,Fall means the beginning ofa new year.

During those academicyears, you meet a lot offolks both good and bad -growing up means youbegin the sense the differ-ence and move in a positivedirection.

To guide you in thatdirection are your teachers. If you’re lucky, you’ll meetsome great teachers whom

you’ll remember all yourlife.

In high school, Mr.Aurelio Mora taught meEnglish with the humani-ties mixed in. We studiedliterature mixed with poet-ry and opera. Mr. Moraspoke several languagesand had a box at theMetropolitan Opera inNew York where heattended opera. He wouldexplain the operas andtranslate what the ariasmeant.

On another day hewould have me read aloud“The Miller’s Tale” whichis the bawdiest of theCanterbury Tales.

The important thingwas that Mr. Mora helpedus to understand the rolethat art plays in our lives. We are surrounded by it,and the internet has made

more great works of art, literature and music moreaccessible to all of us at little cost.

One of the ways Mr.Mora did this was the wayhe taught - with trueenthusiasm. Enthusiasmmeans literally to be “filled with the spirit” andthat’s a good way to lookat it.

Whether it’s art or anyaspect of life, successdepends on enthusiasm. I once heard a salesmansay, “When you’re on fireabout a project, people willcome from miles aroundjust to see the glow.”

As you begin this year -in school or not - findsomething to be enthusias-tic about - to glow about .Who knows? The rightpeople may come aroundjust to see the glow.

NEW PATIENTS ARE WELCOME!

The state’s annualback-to-school sales taxholiday will be held thefirst weekend in August, starting Friday, Aug. 1, at12:01 a.m. and ending onSunday, Aug. 3, at 12 midnight.

This will be the state’sninth annual back-to-school sales tax holiday. The three-day shoppingholiday was created in 2006to give parents and othershoppers an opportunity tobuy certain school-relateditems without the burdenof state sales or use tax.

According to the origi-nal act (Sales Tax HolidayAct No. 2006-574), the statewaives state sales or usetax on certain school-relat-ed items annually duringthe first full weekend ofAugust. It also gives coun-ties and municipalities anopportunity to participatein the holiday by waivinglocal sales or use tax aswell.

“BACK TO SCHOOL” SALES TAX HOLIDAY AUG.1-3Items covered by the act

include clothing ($100 orless, per article of clothing);computers, software andschool computer supplies (asingle purchase with a salesprice of $750 or less); schoolsupplies, school art suppliesand school instructionalmaterials (sales price of $50or less, per item); and books(with a sales price of $30 orless, per book).

Municipal sales tax willalso be waived for thosesame items, based on anordinance passed by theAlabaster City Council twoyears ago. The ordinance(Ordinance No. 12-005)exempted the covered items“during the first full week-end of August 2012 andeach consecutive year there-after.”

Clothing items not cov-ered include things that aresold separately, like beltbuckles, costume masks orpatches and emblems. Italso doesn’t include sports

or recreational equipment, like baseball gloves or shinguards.

In 2012, the State ofAlabama created a secondsales tax holiday, to assistshoppers with severe weath-er preparedness. That holi-day takes place the last fullweekend in February eachyear and exempts itemsrelated to emergency pre-paredness.

ANSWERING MEDICARE QUESTIONS BY REP. APRIL WEAVER

In my role as a legisla-tor, I often encounter seniorcitizens who have ques-tions about Medicare. I amin no way an expert in thisarea, but I have found aresource that can help youfind the answers. The StateHealth InsuranceAssistance Program (SHIP)is a free counseling serviceprovided by the Middle

Alabama Area Agency onAging (M4A). They canhelp you educate yourselfto navigate the challengesof Medicare.SHIP helps answer ques-tions about Medicare,Medicare SupplementalInsurance, MedicareAdvantage Plans, MedicarePart D (prescription drugcoverage), long-term careinsurance, and programs toassist with Part B and Part D premiums (theMedicare Savings Programand the Limited-IncomeSubsidy). SHIP providesfree, impartial informationto help consumers makedecisions regarding theirhealth care choices. Whena Medicare beneficiary hasa question about Medicarebenefits, the beneficiarymay contact the local SHIP

Representative April Weaver

at 205-670-5770 or 1-866-570-2998.During Open Enrollment(which starts October 15),SHIP has about two dozencommunity events inwhich SHIP counselorsmeet face-to-face with ben-eficiaries to provide helpwith plan enrollment andchanges. Usually, theSenioRx program (a pro-gram funded by theAlabama State Legislature)partners with SHIP forthese events since manyseniors, people with dis-abilities and Medicaid ben-eficiaries need medicationassistance.

M4A is particularlyinterested in outreach andeducation to seniors on thepreventive services offeredby Medicare because theseservices complement their

Aldi Food Markets arean international corpora-tion with stores in seven-teen countries. Their mis-sion is “simply smartershopping” which givesthem a different look frommore traditional U. Aldi onlycarries a limited number ofname brand products thatmay be recognizable toAlabaster shoppers.Instead, they rely heavilyon their own store brandsin order to pass significantsavings to the customer.Other cost saving measuresused by Aldi include rent-ing shopping carts for a

Customers bringingtheir own bags not onlysaves cost but also helpsthe environment which isone of the goals promotedby Aldi. The 25 cent rentalfee for shopping carts isrefunded when the cus-tomer returns the cart tothe cart corral.

in Alabaster was recentlyhonored with a SmallBusiness of the Yearaward by the GreaterShelby County Chamberof Commerce. TheChamber presented theaward at a June 25 awardsluncheon held at thePelham Civic Complexand Ice Arena in Pelham.

“This was our secondsmall business awardsprogram,” said GSCCCPresident Kirk Mancer in aJuly 9 interview. “Westarted it last year. Thepurpose of it relates backto the business develop-ment and support aspectof our Shelby One five-year strategic plan.”

At the June 25 lunch-eon, the Chamber recog-nized four small business-es in categories based on

the size of their businesses. “We had a total of 35

nominees in the variouscategories,” said Mancer.“There were four recipients, one in each category. Thosewere based upon the num-ber of employees that acompany has.”

According to Mancer, the winners were selectedby a panel of judges, whichincluded a banker, an attor-ney and an accountant.

“Once they were nomi-nated, they were then askedto provide some informa-tion,” said Mancer. “(Thejudges) reviewed the infor-mation that the nomineessubmitted, and based uponthat information, they thenmade a determination as towho the recipient was ineach category.”

“These were businessesthat were nominated fromall over the county. Youdid not have to be a cur-rent Chamber member tobe nominated, so it trulywas an open opportunity,”said Mancer.

NEW HIGH SCHOOL nally added in 2011 as away to help fund the newlyformed school district. Now it will be used torepay the bond issue, aswell as “other publicschool purposes.”

Ordinance No. 14-006,which can be found onlineat the City of Alabasterwebsite(Cityofalabaster.com),specifically pledges 1 per-cent of the municipal gen-eral sales and use tax to theSchool Board “through thelast maturity date of theSeries 2014 Warrants.”

The Council vote wasnot unanimous, however, and some elected officialsexpressed concerns aboutthe length of the commit-ment. Councilman RussellBedsole voted against thepledge, whileCouncilwoman Stacy

Rakestraw chose to abstain. Mayor Marty Handlon

issued her own statement, voicing financial concernswith the pledge.

“Research reveals thatthe school systems inwhich we might aspire tobe compared to receivefunding by the sure andsteady stream of ad val-orem taxes, not the everfluctuating and volatilesales tax,” Handlon wrote.

Despite those concerns, however, the fundingpledge passed, giving theSchool Board’s plan for anew high school the back-ing it needed to move for-ward. For Alabaster stu-dents, that means a newhigh school should besomewhere not too far offin the future. And as usual,it’s a great day to be aWarrior!

On Saturday, June 28,Alabaster residents flockedto Veterans Park inAlabaster for “CelebrateAmerica,” an evening offamily-friendly fun inhonor of IndependenceDay.

The event, which hasbecome a popular way tocelebrate the Fourth ofJuly, is produced byKingwood Church in part-nership with the City ofAlabaster.

This year’s event fea-tured lots of activities forthe family, including aKids Zone for the children, plenty of great food from avariety of local vendorsand a massive fireworksshow to top off theevening.

According to KingwoodEducation Pastor BennyCunningham, the fireworksshow is produced eachyear by Pyro Productions, which is the same companythat does Thunder on the

Mountain in Birmingham. The Celebrate Americashow is unique, however,in terms of how close theviewers are to the show.

“Because of the proxim-ity of the launching of thefireworks, it an amazingexperience,” saidCunningham.

Celebrate America hasgrown considerably overthe last few years, becom-ing one of the most popu-lar Independence Dayevents in Shelby County.According to Cunningham, that success is due in largepart to the close coopera-tion with the City ofAlabaster.

“The event is made pos-sible because of a partner-ship with the City ofAlabaster and KingwoodChurch. The church worksclosely with the City, espe-cially Parks and Rec.,Alabaster Fire Departmentand Alabaster PoliceDepartment to make the

event a success,” saidCunningham.

Cunningham alsocredited the many volun-teers who work to sup-port the event each year.An estimated 250 volun-teers from the church con-tribute to the event, help-ing with everything fromparking to setting up andtaking down the musicstage.

“The church provideshundreds of volunteers toserve as manpower tomake the big day possi-ble,” said Cunningham.

One of the big drawsof the event is the varietyof food vendors that par-ticipate, and this year wasno different. A few of thevendors included Jim ‘NNick’s Bar-B-Q, Kona Ice,Publix Deli, Mi PuebloSupermarket, Little Italy’sPizza, Zou’s Kitchen,Champy’s, Steak ‘n Shakeand Chubb’s Grub Station.

The event also featured

live music and a movie onthe big screen.

In just its fourth year, the event has become one ofthe largest outdoor festivalsin Shelby County. Last year,an estimated 10,000 peopleattended the event.

Recently theBirmingham AudubonSociety hosted an intro-ductory birding class atAlabaster’s LimestonePark. The beginner birdwalk, which drew approxi-mately 60 people, gavenovice birdwatchers achance to see a variety ofdifferent birds in a whollyunique spot.

“It went real well,” saidKenneth Wills, a memberof the BirminghamAudubon’s conservationcommittee. “We hold theseperiodically throughoutthe year at different placesaround Birmingham. Ithink the last three springswe’ve done one atLimestone Park during thelate winter/early spring, which is a good time tocatch migrant birds com-ing through.”

According to Wills, the

BIRDWATCHERS FLOCK TO PARKgroup was able to see avariety of birds, includinggreat egrets, great blueherons, red-tailed hawks, coots, Canadian geese,blue-winged teal, sand-pipers and meadowlarks. He said the area is specialbecause it offers a uniquecombination of differenthabitats in one location.

“It’s one of the bestbirding spots around inBirmingham because youhave grasslands and wet-lands. That’s somethingyou don’t have in mostplaces,” said Wills. “It’sjust a great place to takepeople, and there are easybirds to show peoplebecause they’re biggerbirds like the great egretsand the herons.”

The crowd of new bird-ers included adults andchildren alike.

“Anybody could show

up,” said Wills. “If folksdidn’t have binoculars wehad extra sets. We set upspotting scopes, so the kidscould look through them. “

According to Wills, thegroup visited several dif-ferent spots at the park inorder to take advantage ofthe diversity.

“We walked around dif-ferent parts of the park. Weflushed some snipe out ofthe wetland,” he said. “Wedidn’t just stay on the plat-form.”

Limestone Park, whichis located off Highway 31just past Saginaw Pipe, fea-tures a birding platformthat overlooks a large wet-land. Members of theAudubon Society have alsoinstalled birdhouses at var-ious points around thepark to attract birds.

Those in attendancealso got a special treat

when a rehabilitated birdwas released back into thewild. The bird had beentreated for an injury at theAlabama Wildlife Center atOak Mountain State Park.

“One of our volunteersnamed Greg Harber, hebrought a male bobwhitequail that had gotteninjured,” said Wills. “Hereleased that on the site, and the kids all got towatch it.”

Wills said the group willbe holding a work day inthe future for anyone thatwants to pitch in. He saidthey will probably meet atthe site at 8 a.m. and workfrom 9 to 11.

A NATURE TREK AT THE BEACH BY DAVID FRINGS

If the Alabama beach-es are on your vacation listthis summer, you maywant to include a naturetrek on your itinerary. GulfShores and Orange Beachwere not always coveredwith high-rise condos, restaurants, and souvenirshops. If you would like toexperience the Alabama

beaches of years past, thenthe Bon Secour NationalWildlife Refuge should benumber one on your list. The 7,000 acre refuge, named as one of the 10 nat-ural wonders of Alabama,is located on the road toFort Morgan. The refugeprovides habitat that sup-ports migrating birds, theendangered Alabama beachmouse, and nesting sea tur-tles. Habitats found on therefuge include beaches, sand dunes, scrub forest,

fresh and saltwater marsh-es, freshwater swamps, and upland forest. Thename “Bon Secour” comesfrom the French and trans-lates to “Safe Harbor.” BonSecour is certainly a safeharbor for wildlife habitatsthat are now missing inmost areas of the AlabamaGulf coast. The protectedhabitat supports over 370species of birds during thespring and fall migrationsat the refuge.

I was impressed withthe beach and dune habi-tats at the refuge. Theyremind me of the GulfShores that I visited as ayoung boy in the late 50’sand early 60’s. The snow-white beaches transform tothe rolling dune habitatwith wind-swept juniper, scrub oaks, and sea oats.Sea oats are an importantplant for beach conserva-tion since their deep rootshold the sand in place andreduce erosion by windand water. This section ofbeach has very little devel-opment which makes foran enjoyable visit whetheryou want to soak up therays or look for rays in thecrystal clear surf. If yougrow tired of the beach, there are shaded hikingtrails that twist their waythrough the scrub forestand other habitats. If youhead for the trails, don’tforget to pack insect repel-lent for those biting mos-quitos and deer flies. Formore information on BonSecour, visitwww.fws.gov/bonsecour/

Other interesting natureopportunities include WeeksBay Reserve which is locat-ed west of Foley on MobileBay. Weeks Bay has aninterpretive center, walkingtrails, and a raised walkwayoverlooking a pitcher bog.The bog supports severalspecies of carnivorousplants, including pitcherplants and sundews. Theyare also home to delicatespecies of native orchids.Need I say that wildlife andwildflower photo-ops

abound! The preserve is ahot spot for a high diversityof native wildlife, especial-ly birding and butterflywatching. For more infor-mation on Week’s Bay visitnerrs.noaa.gov/Reserve.aspx?ResID=WKB.
