“It was another year of firsts, and the future has never looked better!”
Cardinal fans....first and foremost, I want to thank you for your tremendous belief in what we are doing and for your continued support. Because of your extraordinary energy, we have been given the opportunity to continually “raise the bar”. Two years ago, this produced 74 “First-ever” across our total program. This year it has created an unparalleled 84 First-evers. This does not just happen. It takes great coaches, state-of-the-art facilities, outstanding students who are outstanding athletes and the support of a great fan base. In the preceeding pages you can see the countless new benchmarks and new standards of success that future Cardinals must uphold.
Cardinal Pride is bigger than ever. This year we will have an unprecedented level of talent walking on our campus going to class. There will be a two time Kodak All-American Women’s Basketball player, a national indoor long jump champion, a national indoor triple jump champion, three Olympic swimmers, a three time Women’s BIG EAST Track champion, the national leader in blocks per game, an All-American Men’s Cross Country runner, as well as an All-American rower returning for the Cards.
The Cardinal Student-Athletes today are walking among champions each day as they go about their business. It is the beginning of our Strategic Plan coming to life. 23 sports of America’s finest seeking their degrees here at the University of Louisville.
The success of our coaches and their ability to recruit and train outstanding talent is the force behind the Plan. One of the most rewarding things I get to do is to find the best coaches. Even with our big vision, they often exceed our expectations. Like Mark Beckham who took over our Women’s Tennis program to their First-ever NCAA National Tournament. And Kellie Young, who built the First-ever Women’s Lacrosse program and had a 12 - 4 inaugural season and was among the nations top 10 in five statistical categories. And then Dan McDonnell capturing our First-ever Baseball BIG EAST Championship, Ron Mann capturing our First-ever Men’s Cross Country BIG EAST Championship and
tom JurichDirector of Athletics / Vice President, U of L
our First-ever Women’s BIG EAST Outdoor Championship and Mark Crabtree finishing in the Top 10 at the Men’s NCAA Golf Championships. Our Field Hockey program in addition to winning a share of the BIG EAST title, was once again the leader in G.P.A., highlighting our academic successes. Our student-athletes are achieving their highest G.P.A.s in school history with close to 300 on the AD Honor Roll and over 200 Red and Black Scholars that are above a 3.25. Our graduation rate is continuing to climb and our success at getting former student-athletes to return to finish their degree work is also soaring thanks to the Bridgman-Houston Scholarship Program.
These First-evers would not happen without your dedication and continued support. These next “firsts” are happening directly because of your support:
> Stadium Expansion Approval - In April, the state of Kentucky approved the expansion of Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium to over 55,000 seats, up to 40 new luxury boxes and 2,000 premium loge seats. When this project is completed, Papa John’s will be one of the finest stadiums in college football. > This year it was published that the University of Louisville was one of two schools in the nation to “play in the trifecta” of a BCS Bowl Game, the NCAA Final Four and the College World Series all in the last four seasons. Elite, indeed.
I want to close as I started by thanking you. Whether it’s the NCAA’s, a Bowl Game or the College World Series, you traveled on a plane or a bus to show the nation what great fans the Cardinals have and why we are the Best College Sports Town in America.
Thanks to you, it is my continued privilege to be your Athletic Director.
