CALL TO ACTION
The mission of The United Methodist Church is to make
disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the world.
The United Methodist Church is called to be a world leader in
developing existing churches and starting new congregations.
The Council on Bishops and the Connectional Table has
challenged the church to a Call to Action. We will look at our
church to see where we are, where we have been and where we
plan to go as a church. To do this we will consider our worship
attendance, growth through new disciples, involvement in
mission and giving.
We are all called to be a vital congregation which has:
Inviting and inspiring worship
Engaged disciples in mission and outreach
Gifted, equipped and empowered lay leadership
Small groups and strong children’s programs and youth
ministry
We are asking our leaders and those who have an
interest to come to a meeting with the Pastor Black
on Thursday, September 8th at 7:00PM so we can
begin our work.
Children’s Choir Rehearsals Begin
Our Children’s Choir rehearsals will resume on
Wednesday, September 7th at 5:30, and continue each
week on Wednesday from 5:30-6:30. The children’s
choir will be working on our annual Christmas Musical that
will be presented on Sunday, December 11th. All ages 4 years
to 5th grade are welcome to come and sing. For more
information contact Pattie Rae Bryant at 744-3047.
Athens Area Community Chorus rehearsals!
The Athens Area Community Chorus is a volunteer, community choral ensemble, led by our Chancel Choir director,
Nathan Windt, and includes singers from all ages and musical
backgrounds in the greater East Tennessee region. We’ve been
proudly represented by members of Allen Memorial’s Choir,
including Becky Jaquish, Jan Peel, Kristin Allen, Patti Rae Bry-
ant, Rick Parker, Matt Dannel, David Cawlfield, Marjorie Guffey,
Jo Ann Littleton, and many more!
Our 2011/2012 concert season will include a Christmas
concert of sacred and secular favorites (December 2011), and an
April 2012 performance of Brahms’s German Requiem, one of the
great masterworks in Western Classical Literature, to be
performed in a new arrangement for chamber orchestra in col-
laboration with the Tennessee Wesleyan College choral ensem-
bles (as of right now, we’re the American premiere perform-
ance!).
This is a fun group committed to furthering the choral arts in
the community, and we’d love for you to join us! We rehearse
weekly on Tuesday nights, from 7–9 pm, on the Tennessee
Wesleyan campus. For further information, contact Nathan at
513.460.3121, or [email protected]. Don’t miss your chance to
be a part of great music with great people!
Adopt-a-Street Clean-up Day
As one of our community outreaches, we
have “adopted” Pope Avenue. It is time again for
clean-up along Pope Avenue. Meet at the church on
Saturday, September 16th, at 9:00 (to 12:00). All clean-up gear
provided. Come and help with this Family Life Ministry
project! See Amy Windt for more information!
Annual Church Picnic_____________
Our annual Church Picnic will be held on Sunday,
September 11th, at 5:00PM at the Athens Regional
Park. Drinks, ice and paper products will be provided.
We will begin with fellowship and games for the
Kids. There is a fish pond near the pavilion as well as walking and
hiking trails or you may just want to sit around and talk. At 5:30 we
will share in a covered dish meal which will be followed by a short
devotional service.
Make plans now, bring your lawn chairs and covered dishes and join
in this time of great fellowship.
Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters… (Isaiah 55:1) If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. (John 7:37) Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life. (Revelation 22:17b)
These three scriptures, from the OT prophet, from Jesus in the gospel, and from the book of the Revelation (Jesus speaking) all have to do with a basic need in life. If you have had to spend any time outdoors this summer, you probably have experienced the feel-
ing of thirst. The hot and dry weather makes us very thirsty. I have been taking a new medicine that sometimes leaves me with a dry,
cottony mouth. My mouth seems to just to be filled with cotton and I end up with my lips sticking together and my mouth feeling full.
It is then that I need to get some water.
For many people in the world that need and desire for water is a greater problem. They do not have access to clean drinking water.
I sponsor a girl in Haiti who lives in a home set up from missionaries that I know. They just recently, after two years, were able to
build facilities for the children and to dig wells. Now the children and the people in the community can come and get fresh, clean wa-
ter. In the Sudan, our conference has been raising money and helping to dig wells. Many still do not have access to water. This makes
my dry mouth not seem like a very big deal. I can go to the water fountain, sink or fridge and have water immediately.
The image of thirst for people who lived in a desert region was often that of water. In the passages listed in this article people are
invited to come and take of water that is free. They would understand the meaning of the prophet and Jesus speaking of water. It is
more than physical water. These passages speak of the Spirit of God. We can come with our thirst for truth, for life, for forgiveness,
for strength and receive freely. I wonder…do I have that kind of thirst for God? Do I feel an emptiness and dryness in my spirit that
drives me to Jesus? I did find the water of life from Jesus many years ago. But my thirst for more and more continues.
The water he gives is without price. It is free. That means you and I don’t have to do anything to get it. We don’t have to do any-
thing to receive this gift. The gift of salvation is free to all who simply come. Are you thirsty? Do you long for a cool drink from the
fountain of life? Jesus says “Come and drink freely.” He can satisfy that longing in our heart and that need for his love and grace. If
you haven’t surrendered then let me urge you to do so. I also suggest that you come daily to him for a fresh anointing of the water of
life.
May God bless you richly as you follow Him.
The Kids Klub Committee will meet at 5:30 on Wednesday, Sep-tember the 14th. Our Children’s Ministry will be kicking off their Fall activities very soon. Be watching for some exciting news and events. For more information please see Lisa Sharp.
Medical Mission Trip to Nicaragua, a Blessed Experience by Kari Kuykendall I would like to start by saying thank you to all those that donated over-the-counter
medications and made monetary donations for the medical mission to Nicaragua that I
went on in July. Your donations went to help a wonderful, loving, and appreciative
group of people in a rural community of Nicaragua called La Grecia. It was a very
eye-opening experience that I will never forget.
I went as part of a team of 38 people consisting of mostly medical professionals. We
set up a week long clinic in a school house in La Grecia. The people first went to public
health where they learned how physical, mental, and spiritual health are intertwined and
how to improve their total health. After that they went to triage. From there, based on
their chief complaint they could be sent to a primary care physician, women’s care,
surgery, dentistry, optometry, or physical therapy. We saw between 400-500 patients
per day.
As a pharmacy student I spent most of my time in the pharmacy. We had vitamins,
pain and inflammation relievers, various stomach medications, an assortment of creams,
eye and ear drops, cold and allergy medications, and lots of antibiotics and
antiparasitics. I had a ton of fun working in the pharmacy especially talking to the
patients and teaching them how to use their medications.
One major difference in the way we practiced in Nicaragua is that we prayed with
each patient that came through. As I would pray aloud for the patient many patients
would pray for me aloud simultaneously which took me by surprise at first, but after I
realized what they were doing I found it to be very endearing, and I was touched.
Church was much different there also. There was lots of singing and a whole bunch of
dancing! It amazed me that even though I had no idea what they were saying I could
feel the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Once again thank you for all the prayers and donations. I feel truly blessed to have
been a part of that trip and to have had the opportunity to serve the Lord and help such
an amazing group of people.
Kari Kuykendall

“Watch out!” he said. “Be on your guard
against all kinds of greed; a man’s life
does not consist in the abundance of his
possessions.” (Luke 12:15) Security,
peace, happiness - Jesus. Only one person can invade a life-and
bring security peace happiness! Jesus, who, though he was rich,
became poor for our sakes so that we, in our hopeless poverty,
might become rich, extraordinarily rich-in the things that truly
count!.
“Be shepherds of God’s flock…..not because you must, but because you are willing…..(1 Peter 5:2a) God wants you to see your opportunity to serve as an honor, not a drag. Why? Because he is call-ing you to deal with the flock whom he loves. It is your chance to serve God by serving others.
Is your life a good example of Christ’s gospel of peace and love? “Go…..and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Labor Day Facts Labor Day, the first Monday in September, became a legal holiday
in 1894. In 2009, 155.1 million people were in our nations labor
force. Approximately 7.2 million people identify their occupation
as teacher, 1.7 million are chief executives, 751,000 are farmers and
773,00 are hairdressers/hairstylists.
Any youth 6th—12th grade is invited to participate in our Youth Group. Our meetings begin on Sunday afternoons 4:30.
After surviving a true mission-field experience with Mountain2Sea Ministries in Brunswick, GA, the Youth of Allen took a few weeks off before the school year began. But it’s back to school and back to youth at 4:30 every Sunday afternoon. See you there! The Youth of Allen also enjoyed the annual “Back to School Luau” at the home of Glenda and Dick Moss. The youth enjoyed food, fun and devotions to kick off the new school year and the start up of youth on Sunday afternoons. On September 11th, the youth will meet at the church picnic with their families at the Athens Regional Park at 5:00 on Sunday afternoon. An important parent (parents must attend) & youth meet-ing will be held on September 18th, to update all youth paperwork (medical/release forms) for the upcoming year. This youth will also be given the calendar for the rest of this year and a peek into the plans for next year. On September 25th, the youth will serve dinner after church (Potato and Salad Bar) following Worship Service, and have a regular youth meeting at 4:30PM.
Something for Everyone Please plan to join us on Tuesday, September 6th, as we
travel to Jim Oliver’s Smokehouse atop beautiful Monteagle
mountain. Here you will enjoy good home-style cookin, served
by friendly folks. A few of the items they offer are
Tennessee country ham, southern fried chicken and catfish,
fried green tomatoes, homemade pies and homemade
ice-cream. They serve around 400,000 meal each year. You
will have an opportunity to browse the trading post/gift shop
which has an “old country store” atmosphere. Please reserve
your spot with Charlotte or call the church office by Sunday,
September 4th.
Fall Trip: Our Fall Trip is scheduled for Sept.
18-20. Highlights include a visit to the Lousiville
Slugger Museum where you will see bats being made
in the U.S.A., a visit to the General Patton
Museum at Fort Knox; My Old Kentucky Home in
Bardtown, KY. and Shaker Village in Pleasant Hill,
