Welcome Good Morning!

One of my favorite things about Northwestern is the moments I take to pause and be enveloped by my surrounding and experiences. Standing on the lakefill on a gorgeous afternoon, walking through the sorority quads in light snowfall, and incredible conversation over a meal with friends are picture-perfect moments that will stay with me.

ASG is in the perfect position to create moments for students—times they will cherish beyond their time at Northwestern. I had been asked what I plan to do this year in ASG. I had many to-do lists and goals set out, but I wasn’t content with that plethora of lists. It was time that I took action. After considering my dreams and plans for this year, I shared one phrase with exec that sums up my goals for ASG this year.

ASG exists to create connections, destinations, and experiences with and for

Northwestern students. We are here to encourage partnerships amongst students. Community is built through

relationships. Working together with other groups of students will create connections across campus. Plus, working with other groups provides the opportunity for growth and enhanced programming on campus as we combine the skills and specialties of each group to organize magnificent events.

Environment is key in creating connections with friends. Sitting in a chic restaurant downtown adds a hip vibe to your gathering as opposed to a standard chain restaurant in the suburbs. Improving dorm lounges, creating outdoor spaces, and teaming with various student groups to better serve their logistical needs on campus will enable ASG to relate to the various niche groups on campus while leaving a new destination on campus. A pertinent building block to building relationships is experiences shared with your closest friends and teammates. Through events such as an Off-Campus Block Party culminating a Christmas Light Competition and a campus-wide ball, ASG will create the framework for students to make their memories. As we work to create the best college years for our friends and peers, ASG will be looking at successes from our history and bringing back some traditions. Some of the greatest memories are made in events that bring together our campus in a shared experience.

I am thrilled to serve alongside each member of ASG as we invigorate Northwestern with incredible connections, destinations, and experiences that capitalize on the strengths of our spectacular students.

Executive Team Biographies

Austin Young President

I am so excited to serve alongside all members of ASG as we strive to make the Northwestern experience even more incredible for every student. I am pursuing a double major in Economics and International Studies and recently completed the Medill Certificate in Integrated Marketing Communications. My home is in Coral Springs, Florida, but I interned this summer with JPMorgan Chase in Chicago. This fall is a great experience as I pursue a full-time position in real estate development. I have a passion for my family, traveling, driving, spending time at the beach, and taking a culinary tour of Chicago restaurants.

Ash Jaidev Executive Vice President

Ash Jaidev is a senior double majoring in Economics and History, and is thrilled to spend his senior year as Executive VP alongside Austin and the executive board. Originally from New York, he spent the summer there working at BlackRock, and also traveled to India at the end of the summer. He's been involved in a number of other projects, including the New Student Center Initiative, for which he was Director. In his spare time he plays the drums and Tabla (Indian percussion).

Wilson Funkhouser III Speaker of the Senate

Wilson Funkhouser, class of 2012, is a Weinberg Senior from Park Ridge, Illinois. He has been in senate since his freshman year, serving as a student group senator. He was next elected Parliamentarian, and currently serves as Speaker of the senate as of Spring Quarter 2011. Although mathematically minded, Wilson also plays the piano and enjoys prestidigitation.

Jill Grewe Parliamentarian

Jill Grewe is a Senior in the School of Education and Social Policy studying Learning and Organizational Change with minors in Economics and Political Science. She was born and raised in Green Bay, WI. Go Packers! This summer, she worked for the Chicago Public School System in their central office exploring her interest in education policy and administration.

Elena Westbrook Clerk

Clerk Elena Westbrook is a SESP sophomore majoring in Social Policy. Elena calls Chicago her home, and has served as an ASG Senator for North and South Mid-Quads as well as Rogers House. She has also worked extensively as a Group Executive in ASG’s Student Groups Committee since fall quarter of 2010, and looks forward to continuing her involvement.

Jeremy Yablon Financial Vice President

Financial Vice President Jeremy Yablon is a WCAS senior pursuing Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences, Economics, and Political Science majors, and the Kellogg Certificate Program for Undergraduates in Financial Economics. Originally from Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Jeremy joined the Student Activities Finance Committee (SAFC) as a freshman and eagerly began his tenure as the Financial Vice President this past February. In his time here on campus, Jeremy has been involved in many student organizations including Consultants Advising Student Enterprise (CASE), Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity, and Students Consulting for Nonprofit Organizations (SCNO).

Lauren Masterson Student Groups Vice President

Lauren Masterson is a Junior in Weinberg, currently majoring in economics. She grew up in a suburb of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and attended Carleton College for her freshman year before transferring to Northwestern University. She is currently working in a non-profit organization in the Chicago Public Schools called Supplies for Dreams, and as a Community Assistant in the Foster-Walker residence hall for the 2011-2012 school year.

Gabrielle Daniels Academic Vice President

Gabrielle is a Weinberg senior majoring in Anthropology major with a cultural concentration and doubling with International Studies. Gabrielle spent the last year serving as an active member of the Academic Committee, as well as the Wildcats for Israel Executive Board as Co-Vice President of Cultural Affairs. This upcoming year, she will be conducting research through the Center for Forced Migration Studies through the Buffet Center.

Steven Monacelli Community Relations Vice President

Community Relations Vice President Steven Monacelli is a Junior pursuing majors in Political Science and Theatre as well as a minor in Legal Studies. Originally from Colleyville, Texas, Steven began working with ASG as a Senator this fall and is eager to begin his tenure as Community Relations Vice President. In addition to participating in ASG this past year, Steven acted as a Party Leader for Northwestern’s Political Union, was a member of College Democrats, directed a show for SPECTRUM Theatre Company and acted in several student films and productions on campus. This summer he interned at the Dallas Mayor’s Office as well as the Dallas Chamber of Commerce.

Katie Bradford Student Life Vice President

I'm a Senior studying Industrial Engineering and Economics and have just completed the Kellogg Undergraduate Certificate in Managerial Analytics. I'm from Scottsdale Arizona, and will probably be spending the summer doing micro finance work in India. I also really like being outdoors and went backpacking through the Grand Canyon for Spring Break with the Northwestern University Outing Club.

David Harris Vice President of Services

David is SESP sophomore from Palo Alto, California majoring in Economics and Learning & Organizational Change, with a minor in Business Institutions. Before becoming VP of Services, David served as an ASG Senator where he authored five pieces of legislation. In addition to ASG, David is the founder of Project Cookie, a late night cookie delivery and catering service on campus, operating within the entrepreneurship group Northwestern Student Holdings, and is a brother of the Sigma Chi fraternity. David spent this summer at a Marketing-Communications internship with Apple, Inc. in Cupertino.

Laurel Stankus Public Relations Vice President

Laurel Stankus is a Senior in the Medill School of Journalism studying marketing and magazine journalism. She is originally from the southwest suburbs. Her marketing experience includes: Pillars Community, a local non-profit, PS Communications, a boutique medical PR firm, Leo Burnett and Allstate Insurance. In her free time Laurel coaches and judges high school speech and debate teams.

Ethan Romba Vice President of Technology

Vice President of Technology Ethan Romba is a McCormick Sophomore in Computer Science with a passion for web development and user-interface design. A native of St. Charles, Illinois, Ethan is looking forward to leveraging his skills over the coming year to bring substantial improvements to ASG's online services and learn as much as he can along the way. When he's not tackling bugs in his text-editor, Ethan is pursuing his other love, acting, which he studies as a theatre minor.

Josephine Lee Treasurer

Josephine Lee is a SESP Sophomore pursuing a degree in Learning and Organizational Change. She was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She is a competing member of the Northwestern Speech Team and is also a member of Zeta Tau Alpha. She directs business development for Nubodega, a student-run business. Her hobbies include reading and playing the flute. This summer she interned with PROACT Consulting in Wilmette, IL. Last, but not least, she loves Northwestern!

President Austin Young

Project Highlight

ASG Exec Retreat o On September 24th and 25th, ASG Exec had our first ever offsite retreat. It was an

incredible opportunity to get to know each other as friends; these strengthened relationships have led to greater understanding of each others’ leadership styles and enable us to work more efficiently together as a team.

o We completed leadership assessments, chartered a mission statement for our team this year, and had some amazing conversations on some of the biggest topics on campus, including the following:

Community: This is such a buzzword, but how do we make this concept relatable and tangible for Northwestern? One of our biggest takeaways is the need for shared experiences and traditions at Northwestern.

Group Dynamics: For ASG to be the most effective servants at Northwestern, we have to have a dynamic group experience for all 127 members of our team. From ASG All-Team Meetings twice quarterly to group apparel to coffee dates, we are committed to making this year incredible for our members; this energy and enthusiasm will translate to maximum and relatable results across our campus.

Fall Quarter 2011 Initiatives

Roundtables o Periodic meetings with ASG, student leaders, and Dr. Telles-Irvin to promote

communication and relationships between all sectors of Northwestern Consistent and Poignant Communication

o Dorm Dialogues Weekly discussions within residential communities or student groups will

be coordinated by ASG to focus on a specific campus issue. These brainstorming and feedback sessions will be used for accountability and the impetus for greater ASG response to direct student ideas.

o Social Media Invest in creating a culture of shared experiences as I document via social

media my Northwestern adventures alongside other students and leaders Endowment Committee

o Interested students will have the opportunity to learn from administrators about the workings of the Northwestern endowment

Student Group Outreach o Partnership Promotion

Beginning with ASG, we will encourage student groups to partner together when planning campus programming. These working relationships will foster a greater sense of community as friendships are made between groups of students across campus.

Branding ASG o Working with an acclaimed student marketing and branding expert, ASG is

receiving a facelift, both in graphic presence and overall branding. A consistent and timeless brand will create an identity for ASG amongst our campus student group culture.

Off-Campus Living o Christmas Light Competition

Host a spirited competition that unites off-campus students with those living on-campus to create a celebration in December

Winter Quarter 2012-Spring Quarter 2012 Initiatives

WinterFest o Create a wintertime week of activities that allow all members of our community

to engage in this week of events A cappella concert, outdoor hockey game with synchronized skating

halftime show, cover band competition Mr. and Miss Northwestern Talent and Leadership Pageant All-campus Ball Traditional Bonfire Celebration to culminate the week’s festivities

Increase interaction between NU-Evanston and NU-Qatar campuses o Simulcast meetings between student governments

Leadership Series o Develop and implement the beginning portion of a Leadership Insight Series with

New Student Center Initiative o Continue to research the benefits and costs of a new student center on campus o Assess the needs of students from community and functionality perspectives o Communicate with the administration and student body on how we can move

NU Day at the United Center o Trip to a Chicago Bulls game in February o Package would include a ticket, t-shirt, and transportation o Goal is to have 1500-2000 students attend

ASG committee accountability o Work with individual ASG committees to ensure their projects are achieved o Evaluate the relative performances of committee heads and members to assess

Speaker of the Senate Wilson Funkhouser III Fall Quarter 2011 Initiatives • Caucus projects

o Senate caucuses undertaking individual projects to be completed by end of the school year.

o Project goals range from increasing aspects of campus safety to improving off-campus community relations.

• Aiding senators in undertaking their own initiatives with the help of ASG. o Empowering individual senators to work towards their own goals of improving

Northwestern with the help of ASG resources. Winter Quarter 2012-Spring Quarter 2012 Initiatives Formalize recruitment process for Fall 2012

o Work closely with Parliamentarian to establish ASG recruitment process. o Improve communication and planning with the Residential College Board and Residential Hall Association, focusing on future senator recruitment.

Parliamentarian Jill Grewe Winter Quarter 2012 Initiatives

• Associated Student Government Code & Constitution Review o Due to legislative changes over the past few years as well as the recent Senate

Reform Bill that passed at the end of May, the Code and Constitution are slightly outdated and need to be reworked. While doing this process, I will be working on strengthening both and looking for ways to improve Senate by writing and presenting legislation proposing changes such as: senate attendance & accountability standards, senate funding pool clarification, and a stronger explanation of the judicial review procedure.

• Senate Culture o I, along with the rest of the Senate governing body, will be working on improving

the culture of Senate and its standards. We will be working on creating a more collaborative, communicative, and cohesive culture.

• Improve Senator Recruitment o Recruitment of senators went well this year, however there is much room for

improvement. I will be working closely with Residential Life staff in order to standardize the procedure and find synergies between the recruitment of senators and hall governments.

Goals for 2011-2012

Complete the update and revision of the ASG Code & Constitution Write a “Parliamentarian Manual” to improve transition process Improve Senate culture and promote Senator involvement Rework the roll of Rules Committee to help inspire legislation and provide help to new Senators Improve the recruitment and voting process for new RHA/RCB senators

Clerk Elena Westbrook

Project Highlights

Wildcat Tailgate o ASG worked closely with the NAA-affiliated Homecoming Committee to put on

a successful pre-game tailgate at the Library Place parking lot. We raffled off over a dozen prizes, had a cornhole tournament, and gave away merchandise and food. Our total attendance was approx. 221 people.

B-Status Funding o Worked as a member of the Student Groups Committee to re-design the funding

application for B status groups in order to make the process smoother and easier for all involved parties.


Keeping senate accountable o Continue assisting the parliamentary body in record-keeping and senate culture

improvement Managing B- and T-Status Student Groups

o Work closely with the Student Groups Vice President as she increases accountability of B-status groups and works to approve new groups into T-status.


Public Minutes o Work with Technology Vice President to designate a section of the ASG website

for weekly minutes from senate, with the hope that publishing minutes publicly will increase senate transparency and inform the student body.

Passed Legislation Review o Publish a quarterly compilation of passed legislation to the media and senators so

that the Northwestern community can keep tabs on what ASG has done each quarter through senate.

Financial Vice President Jeremy Yablon

Project Highlight

Supplemental Funding

o Successfully lead the Supplemental Funding cycle to increase funds for student group programming for the remainder of the fiscal year.


A More Efficient Supplemental Funding

o Worked with A-status student groups and ASG Senate to streamline funding process by creating an alternate venue for appealing recommendations.

SAFC Guideline Town Hall

o Host information sessions for student groups and advisors about the SAFC guidelines and hear input on possible improvements. I hope to gain feedback on how to improve efficiency and policy of the SAFC to better serve Northwestern’s undergraduates.


Work with the Vice President of Technology to merge SAFC website into the new ASG website.

Work with Student Groups Vice President on revising the A/B/T-status system of student group classification to simply group creation process.

Create an archive of passed and failed petitions. Create a “proportional revenue” system to encourage groups to look for more outside

fundraising and increase the quality of programming.

Student Groups Vice President Lauren Masterson

Winter Funding Revamp

Funding Process for Winter 2012 o The Student Groups Committee will be working together this term to streamline

and revise the funding process to make the SGC more sustainable, ease the workload of groups applying for subsidized funding, and increase the quality and consistency of the process as a whole.


Fall Audits o The Student Groups Committee met with each group who has either T- or B-

status recognition with ASG to discuss their financial, programming and future position on the Northwestern campus.

Winter Funding Cycle o The SGC will be opening up funding applications to groups from 10/17-10/31 for

the winter term. Each group applying will fill out an application, meet with a committee member and also have the option to appear in a hearing before the committee and appeal the SGC’s recommendation to Senate (on 11/16).

Student Leadership Training o I will be working with the SAFC to plan make-up sessions for Spring Leadership

Training from last year.


• Winter Activities Fair o The SGC is responsible for hosting the Winter Activities Fair in Norris for all

ASG recognized groups sometime during the winter term. This fair is generally much smaller than the Fall Activities Fair so should require little outside sourcing of materials.

Academic Vice President Gabby Daniels

Goals for 2011-2012

Work to publicize more academic-related services already provided by the university, as well as raise awareness for ones to come.

Reach out face-to-face with more student groups on campus to increase accessibility to the Academic Vice President and Academic Committee to create a better medium for idea exchange in the academic realm.

Increase visibility and offering of cultural courses, school wide. Work with the University to increase the visibility of student-led initiatives to alumni,

particularly in the academic field. Add more accounting and essential finance-related courses for undergraduates. Increase funding opportunities for ‘experiential learning’ initiatives for undergraduate

students and create a portal for such opportunities. Improve the ‘freshman experience’ by implementing a stronger unifying feature to the

overall experience.

Community Relations Vice President Steven Monacelli Project Highlight

• Undergraduate Housing Info Session o A new event that will provide students with a comprehensive view of

undergraduate housing options at Northwestern. The event will feature a speaker from Student Affairs, a representative from the City of Evanston, and an off-campus student panel that will share their experiences and field a number of questions. Additionally, a breakout session will follow the informational component and feature representatives from dorm housing, fraternity housing and prominent apartment rental companies. Students will be able to ask more specific questions during the breakout session, such as what the range of rental prices is, or why they may want to stay on campus as an upperclassmen.


Off-Campus Light Walk o A one night event held in cooperation with the Northwestern Police Department

and City of Evanston officials. The goal of the event is to assess the quality of off-campus lighting in highly trafficked areas.

Safety and Occupancy Ordinance Outreach o An ongoing effort to work with the City of Evanston to find a mutually beneficial

solution to the problems of safety and occupancy in the off-campus community. The goal is to plan and facilitate an Off-Campus Safety and Occupancy Workshop during which student government representatives, city officials, Northwestern administrators, landlords and non-student residents can discuss potential solutions to the problems of safety and occupancy in off-campus student housing.


Undergraduate Housing Info Session ReNUvation

o A day of community service following the Dillo Day festivities. Students can volunteer to help clean up our community after the fun is done.

Off Campus Housing Evaluations o A survey meant to evaluate the quality of off-campus student housing. It was also

conducted last year, but we hope to revamp the survey metrics so that they will be more usable and informative.

Projects 2011-2012

Investigate alternatives/improvements to the method of publicizing events by posting flyers on the ground

Look at ways to improve transportation on campus whether through making small changes to the shuttle system or SafeRide

Look to implement a RedBox or other movie rental system on campus Goals for 2011-2012

Increase sustainability efforts on campus Maintain a strong working relationship and open communication with Sodexo in relation

to other ways to improve the dining experience on campus In general, focus on big picture, long term solutions to things instead of quick fixes that

aren't sustainable

Vice President of Services David Harris

Project Highlight

NU Evanston-Job Match Service o A multidisciplinary team of services/business minded students, web developers,

and community relations-oriented students have been working to create a web service that helps facilitate short-term employment for Northwestern students in Evanston. A more elegant, robust, and most importantly, Northwestern-specific version of Craigslist, this will help match job-seeking NU undergrads and worker-seeking Evanston residents. Jobs ranging from computer/tech help to tutoring to snow shoveling to babysitting should come out of this service. The site should be in beta testing by the end of the quarter.


Identify further opportunities for student services. o The Services Committee will spend much of this quarter understanding what

services are offered by our peer institutions, notably COFHE universities, that might work at NU. A team of Kellogg students is helping to advise the committee on this important work.

NU-Evanston Job Match Initiatives


Legal Counseling Service o The Services committee will lobby for a part-time (paid or volunteer) staff

member to advise students and student groups on legal issues, ranging from alcohol violations to landlord issues to group negotiations.

Cell phone/Laptop Share o A service allowing students to rent phones and laptops from Norris, when

students’ own devices are out of commission. Peer Counseling Service

o A peer-to-peer resource for students to address mental health issues. Undergrads Tutoring Undergrads

o A service to facilitate upperclassmen tutoring underclassmen.

Public Relations Vice President Laurel Stankus

Project Highlight

T-Shirt Exchange o To welcome new students to NU, we offered them purple t-shirts I exchange for

one form another school. The goal was to get more freshman wearing purple on game days. With 800 shirts ordered, not a single one is left over. The exchanged t-shirts were washed and then donated to the local Goodwill.


Executive and Senate Media Kits o Briefing kits for all Executive Board members allowing them to get to know the

press writers that regularly follow ASG Improved Media Relations

o Personally taken on, I want to improve the relationship ASG has with Northwestern press for more accurate and positive coverage


Website Content Improvements o I would like to work with Ethan Romba, VP Technology, to make the ASG

website the core hub for all things related to ASG – from highlighting events from various groups, to disseminating polls and surveys.

Working with Other Exec Members o Community Relations- to draft and continue to understand the Three Unrelated

Housing Ordinance and its impact on students. o Academic- I am to help Gabby with improving and understanding the Medill JR

process and why it is not equal to that of Chicago Field Studies.

Project Highlight

ASG Website Redesign o Multiple Twitter / micro-blog feeds on the front page for sharing the latest

updates from ASG’s executive officers and their committees o Intuitive administrative interface for keeping site content up-to-date o Comprehensive archive of past Senate meeting-minutes and legislation o A clean design that helps visitors navigate the site quickly and easily


Overhaul of Online Voting for ASG Senate Elections, Homecoming o Replaced previous years’ custom PHP scripts with a formal survey package that

provides customizable survey templates, numerous question types, advanced survey workflows, token-based survey access, and instant result aggregation

o Worked with Residential Life to send a personalized email to all 4,000+ on-campus students within the first hour after elections opened

o Worked with NUIT to upgrade the ASG web server in order to handle the additional traffic during the election season

o Achieved 100% uptime (no crashes!) on election day Develop NU-Evanston Job-Matching Site with the Services Committee
