Mother’s Dayis on the Way.By Mike Strong

It is the time of the year whenthings are new and fresh withSpringtime and Easter on theway. Life and family cometogether. With Mother’s Day,in May, I thought I wouldshare a story that families liveevery day.

There is something special between aGrandson and his

Grandmother.

While in high school myGrandmother, Mamaw, liveddown the street and she hadtrouble walking so it was myjob to go pick her up for supper in my VolkswagenBeetle. The best part of my tripwas telling her to hold on andthen driving through thedrainage ditch to park next to

the house. She would fuss andraise hell every time but privately. I knew she loved it.

Last week we had a family dinner after the East AscensionSenior Ring Night Ceremony atSno’s Seafood and SteakHouse.

As we sat around the table,Tristan talked his Grammy intocutting his steak for him. Withthumbs up he was happy andplotting to have more fun withher later.

The desserts were served and ina blink, Tristan had dabbledwhip cream on her nose like hehas done so many times beforeat home. She moaned andgroaned and loved everyminute of it.

Cherish the moments you havewith your loved ones and neverforget their importance.

To All the Mother’s andGrandmother’s. You are themost blessed family memberswe have.

It’s Time toPinch Dem’Tails! In a previous Sweet Eyes article,I discussed the bloat andswelling that can occur after aday of eating crawfish and howto reduce the effects of that.

Today, I want to give you several reasons to eat some bugs this crawfish season.

Reason #1It’s a social event! Only insouth Louisiana can you makean all day even out of boilingcrawfish. The guys hangaround the pot solving theworld’s issues while the ladieschat and prepare a refreshingdessert for after eating all thosespicy crawfish.

It’s a day for kids to hang bythe pool or the river or some

form of water. The reason forthat is they can just jump inafter eating to clean themselves off!

Another plus is that becausethere is such little meat in eachlittle bug, you can continue toeat for hours after your initial

sitting. But overall, a day ofboiling and eating those yummyred bugs is all about friends and family.

So, eat some bugs Ascension. It is so worth it!

Reason #2They are actually good for you!Despite the bad rumors aboutall the cholesterol and fat incrawfish, they ARE actuallygood for you.

First of all, Crawfish are anexcellent source of protein. And

remember, the more proteinyou get in your diet, the fulleryou feel, keeps your insulin low, which ultimately results inweight loss!

The fat content in a serving, which is about 3 oz., of washedcrawfish tail meat is only about1% of your daily allowance offat and half your daily allowanceof cholesterol. Also some studies have shown that consuming a diet high inseafood has been shown toreduce the incidence ofAlzheimer’s, angina, stroke, asthma, heart disease and cancer. Crawfish muscle fibersare shorter than the musclefibers in red meats and aremore easily digested. They arealso low in calories, fat and saturated fat, and a good sourceof vitamins. (crawfish.org)Nutrients in crawfish:• Biotin • Calcium • Iron • Niacin • Phosphorus • Protein • Selenium • Vitamin A • Vitamin B-6 • Vitamin B-12

Moroccan OilAlthough this product has beenout for a while, I’m just tryingit, so I’d like to give you mythoughts.

The co-founder, of MoroccanOil created the line after receiving a color service thatleft her hair badly damaged. Afriend brought her to a salonwhere she experienced an astonishing oil treatment. Theresult was that her hair instantlytransformed from damaged toshiny, smooth and manageable. At the time, oil treatments forhair were not as prevalent asthey are today, and theMoroccan Oil brand waslaunched.

The products are a very reasonable and will last a longtime. The repair line is especially good for weakened ordamaged hair from color, chemical processing or heat

9

styling. It contains antioxidant-rich argan oil, reconstructivekeratin and fatty acids, is color-safe, sulfate, phosphateand paraben-free and keratin-enriched. The 8.5 oz.Conditioning Repair shampoo

is $21.80 andRepairConditioner is$22.80. I alsotried the lightMoroccan Oilserum and itretails for $39.

There are a fewdifferent products lineslike: repair, hydrate and frizzcontrol. I’veused the repairline after my stylist suggestedit to me. Whydid she suggestit? Well, I gotsome bondedextension in myhair that reallydamaged my hair.I don’t believe itwas the exten-

sions, but I do believe my hairwas and is too fine to toleratethose extensions. None theless, between that and my highlighted hair, it is frail and dry.

After using my first bottle ofRepair Moroccan Oil, I’venoticed how much shinier, softer and stronger my hair is.Now, when I blow dry my hair,I don’t see small broken piecesfalling out, which is great.

You only need a little bit of theshampoo. Wet your hair thoroughly, apply a smallamount of shampoo and thenrewet while you rub the shampoo into your hair. Itactually lathers more with more water.

Also, I try to leave the conditioner in overnight. Becareful though; don’t use apony tail holder on wet hair. It was pull the hair in that wet, weakened state. I would letthe conditioner air dry a bitand then clip it before going to bed.

Also, a new trick I’ve learned isto use an old T shirt to dryyour hair. It’s gentler than abath towel.

Embrace yourWeaknessesI know it’s hard to let peoplesee weakness or something lessthan attractive in us. We don’twant others to judge us, andwe certainly don’t want themto leave us. I believe when webecome vulnerable and trulyopen up, that’s when real relationships develop. I think ifsomeone loves us, they love usfor all the ugly things too. As amatter of fact, I believe, onceyou share something you’re notproud of, they appreciate yourtransparency so much, theylove you a little bit more.People need to see the real us,not the person we want to portray. Our weaknesses canactually be a platform for us toserve and to share…to make adifference. The thing we thinkis so ugly is the very thing God wants to use to fulfill our purpose.

CoolSculpting® is a revolutionarynon-surgical contouring treatment, clinically proven to selectively reducefat layers in problem areas using apatented cooling technology. It is asafe and effective procedure thatgently cools unwanted fat cells in thebody to induce a natural, controlledelimination of fat cells. This reducesbulges in treated areas of the bodywithout harming surrounding tissue.

Fat cells are more susceptible to cold and are selectively, painlesslyand permanently destroyed. Startingseveral weeks after the procedure, cooled fat cells begin a processcalled “apoptosis” and begin to shrink

and disappear. The body proceeds to naturally and gradually eliminatethe cooled fat cells, reducing thethickness of the fat layer.

Unlike many other methods of fatreduction, CoolSculpting involves NO needles, NO surgery, and mostimportantly, NO downtime. During theprocedure, a non-invasive applicatordelivers precisely controlled coolingto the treatment area thereby

specifically targeting fat. Treatmentslast between one to two hours.Patients can have additional procedures for more pronouncedeffects if they desire. Patients canstart to see results as soon as threeweeks following treatment, with themost dramatic results occurring overa period of two to four months inmost patients.

During your consultation, Ann Zedlitz,M.D. of Z Aesthetic Dermatology will

develop a customized Treatment toTransformation plan to address yourspecific areas of concern. The bestcandidates for the procedure arepeople near their ideal body weightwho eat well and exercise regularlyand have pockets of fat that have notresponded to a healthy lifestyle.

• It is non-invasive so patients canresume daily activities including workand exercise, immediately followingtreatment.• Patients can generally sit or liecomfortably and read, work on theirlaptop or even nap during the procedure. The procedure is performed in the Z Aesthetic

Dermatology office located at 5305Flanders Dr. Baton Rouge, LA• Procedures last about one to twohours, so treatment can easily beperformed during a lunch hour orwithout major disruption to the day.• On average, each CoolSculptingProcedure results in a 20% reductionof fat in the treated areas.

Diet and Oral HealthBy Calvin Bessonet, DDS,FAGD

Your body is like a complexmachine. The foods you choose asfuel and how often you “fill up”affect your general health and thatof your teeth and gums. Many dentists are concerned that theirpatients are consuming record numbers of sugar-filled sodas, sweet-ened fruit drinks, and non-nutritioussnacks that affect their teeth. Theseitems generally have little if anynutritional value and over time theycan take a toll on teeth.

Eating patterns and food choicesamong children and teens areimportant factors that affect howquickly youngsters may developtooth decay. When bacteria (plaque)come into contact with sugar in themouth, acid is produced, whichattacks the teeth for 20 minutes ormore. This can eventually result intooth decay.

Not sure you're getting the nutri-ents, vitamins and minerals neededby your body (and your teeth andgums)? Check out the U.S.Department of Agriculture's Website. The USDA oversees the nutri-tional health of the nation. Theagency's dietary recommendationsare designed to promote optimalhealth and to prevent obesity-relateddiseases including cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes and cancers.

The government's recommenda-tions recognize that people have different dietary needs at variousstages of life. They offer guidancefor children and adults based ontheir levels of physical activity. Yourphysician or a registered dieticiancan also provide suggestions foryour daily food intake.

Foods that contain sugars of anykind can contribute to tooth decay.Almost all foods, including milk orvegetables, have some type of sugar. However, they shouldn't beremoved from our diets becausemany of them contain importantnutrients. And they add pleasure toeating. To help control the amountof sugar you consume, read foodlabels and choose foods and beverages that are low in added sugars. Added sugars often are present in soft drinks, candy, cookiesand pastries.

If your diet lacks certain nutrients,it may be more difficult for tissuesin your mouth to resist infection. This may contribute to periodontal(gum) disease, a major cause oftooth loss in adults. Although poornutrition does not cause periodontaldisease directly, many researchersbelieve that the disease progressesfaster and could be more severe inpeople with nutrient-poor diets

What can you do?

• Maintain a healthy diet.• Make sure water is readily

available.

• Limit the number of between-meal snacks. When you must snack, choose nutritious foods that are lowin sugar.• Brush thoroughly twice a day witha fluoride toothpaste that has theAmerican Dental Association's Sealof Acceptance.• Floss or use another kind of interdental cleaner daily to removeplaque (a thin film of bacteria) fromunder the gums and between teeth.• Schedule regular dental visits forcheckups and cleanings.• Keep a food diary for a week.Record every item you eat anddrink, including hard candies orchewing gum that contains sugar.Compare the diary to the foodPyramid recommendations.

How does the food you eatcause tooth decay?

When you eat, food passesthrough your mouth. Here it meetsthe germs, or bacteria, that live inyour mouth. You may have heardyour dentist talk about plaque.Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria.

These bacteria love sugars foundin many foods. When you don'tclean your teeth after eating, plaquebacteria use the sugar to produceacids that can destroy the hard surface of the tooth, called enamel. After a while, tooth decay occurs. The more often you eat and thelonger foods are in your mouth, themore damage occurs.

What are tips for betterdental health?

1. To get a balanced diet, eat a variety of foods. Choose foods fromeach of the five major food groups:• breads, cereals and other grainproducts• fruits• vegetables• meat, poultry and fish• milk, cheese and yogurt

2. Limit the number of snacks thatyou eat. Each time you eat food that contains sugars, the teeth areattacked by acids for 20 minutes or more.

3. If you do snack, choose nutritiousfoods, such as cheese, raw vegeta-bles, plain yogurt, or a piece of fruit.

4. Foods that are eaten as part of ameal cause less harm. More saliva isreleased during a meal, which helpswash foods from the mouth andhelps lessen the effects of acids.

5. Brush twice a day with a fluoridetoothpaste that has the AmericanDental Association Seal ofAcceptance.

6. Clean between your teeth dailywith floss or interdental cleaners.

7. Visit your dentist regularly. Yourdentist can help prevent problemsfrom occurring and catch those thatdo occur while they are easy totreat.

What’s YourLegacy?

I am spending the day todaywith my daughter sightseeing inDenver after a long drive fromLouisiana to the Mile High Citythat has spanned the last few days.We are here for me to attend aseminar on special needs planningthat is being hosted by theAcademy of Special NeedsPlanners.

During our trip, we have seenthe Route 66 museum in ElkCity, OK, the Cadillac Ranch (aline of Cadillacs buried hooddown in the dirt) in Amarillo, TXand now the sites of Denver. Wealso used this opportunity to visit

with my stepmother in OK and tovisit my father's and my great, great grandmother's gravesites inOK. Later this week, we will alsovisit my grandfather's gravesitehere in Denver. All of these nostalgic venues have made megive a lot of thought to the titleof this month's article -- what isyour legacy?

While we often equate a legacywith passing on material wealth, there are so many things that wecan pass on to our family andloved ones that are much moreimportant than monetary wealth. Each of us has values and idealsthat we would like to see carriedforward to the next generation.Additionally, we usually havedreams and goals that we desirefor our children. We want theirlives to be even better than ours.Despite these desires, we seldomtake the time necessary to com-municate these things to our fam-ily. Personally, some of the mostimportant things I received frommy family have been ethical valuesand I will use this time with mydaughter to verbally pass alongsome of those values to her. However, for a more lasting legacy, I (and you) should consider an ethical will as a way to pass on our values to our loved ones.

So, what is an ethical will andhow do I write one? An ethicalwill is simply a documentaddressed to your loved ones thatbequeaths your values, ideas, personal reflections and philoso-phies to them. You may alsoinclude stories with deep personalmeaning, your ancestral background, favorite scripturepassages, or even actions forwhich you may want to seek for-giveness. There is no particularformat or content that is requiredfor an ethical will as long as itexpresses your heart and your per-sonality. Your ethical will may bea lengthy document if you chooseto tell your loved ones about yourlife events, your goals, your valuesand your beliefs. Or, it may belimited to a specific topic, such as"Mistakes I Have Learned From,""What Spirituality Means to Me,"or "What I Appreciate Most."

An ethical may provide greatvalue to your children and otherdescendants in the future, butthere will also be value to younow in its drafting. An ethicalwill can help you identify whatyou value most and what youstand for. In the process of writ-ing your ethical will you are likelyto learn a lot about yourself. Itwill also help you come to termswith your own mortality by creating something of value thatwill live on after you are gone.

If you're convinced an ethicalwill is something you want to do,how do you get started? There

are many sources available to helpyou write your ethical will. JackRiemer, a rabbi, co-authored abook entitled So That YourValues Live On: Ethical Wills &How to Prepare Them (JewishLights Publishing). A popularwebsite, ethicalwills.com, can alsohelp you prepare an ethical will. You can also order other booksand workbooks to help you in theprocess. Some attorneys whoregularly practice in the area ofestate planning may also help youpen your ethical will or providesamples of ethical wills to you.

Completing your estate plan-ning is a very important matter toensure your family and loved onesare protected if you become disabled or pass away. If youhaven't already done so I encour-age you to meet with qualifiedestate planning professionals todiscuss what plan is best for you. However, why stop there? Onceyou have made sure the rightlegal documents are in place toprotect your loved ones and passyour material wealth to them asyou intend, why not consider anethical will to pass an even morelasting legacy.

For some time now we have heardso much about refinancing. Here are a few questions to ask yourselfbefore your decide if refinance is foryou. A home mortgage refinancemay sound like a good idea in theory but it's not always possible or desirable. For starters, lendershave lightened up the approvalprocess, making it more difficult toget a loan. Homeowners today needto qualify for the loan, have greatincome, great credit and great valuein their home. In addition, a refinance may not be in your bestinterest if you plan to sell your home in a few years.

Before taking the next step, askyourself the following questions:

DO I HAVE ENOUGHEQUITY IN MY HOME?

You need to have at least 20% equity in the home to qualify for anew loan without paying privatemortgage insurance. Adding PMIto the coast of a new loan couldnegate the benefit of a refinance.

Today many homeowners owe moreon their mortgages than the house isworth. However, this does not necessarily rule out the refinance. You should still apply for a refinanceeven if you have low equity becausethere are some programs and loansthat may accept it. The best way tofind out if you fit into one of theseprograms is to visit a lender.

DO I HAVE GOODENOUGH CREDIT?

Good credit scores play a big role insecuring a good mortgage interestrate. You will need a good creditscore to qualify for any type of mortgage. Mortgage rates operateon a sliding scale, with the lowestrates going to applicants with thehighest credit score of 720 or higher. Borrowers with scores below 620 will have trouble qualifying for a mortgage at any rate.

WHAT ARE MY FINANCIAL GOALS?

Many homeowners refinance tolower their monthly payments. A mortgage calculator can give borrowers a sense of what their new payment would be after a refi.Others choose a shorter-term loanwith a higher monthly payment sothat they can reduce overall interest

payments and own their homesfaster. Some people are restructuring their loan to a 20-15 or 10 year mortgage which workswell for people with plenty of dis-posable income.

Consider your overall financial goals. It may be better to contribute toretirement savings or college savings, pay off high-interest debtand save 6 to 12 months of expensesbefore considering a shorter moreexpensive mortgage.

Also consider whether you want toretire without a mortgage beforeconsidering a new 30 year loan.People who have employment concerns may want to refinance tothe lowest possible payment in casethey experience a job loss.

HOW LONG DO I PLANTO STAY IN THE HOME?

Mortgage professionals will advisehomeowners who are considering arefi that it will cost from 3 to 6 percent of the loan amount.Consider how long it will take toreach the breakeven point and whenthe savings outweighs the costs.

WHAT ARE THE TERMSOF MY CURRENT LOAN?

Borrowers with adjustable ratemortgages or interest only shouldconsider the potential benefit ofswitching to a fixed rate loan.Borrowers with an ARM shouldswitch to a fixed rate loan unlessthey intend to move within a year.If you have a subprime ARM youshould definitely switch to a new loan.

While new loans today rarely have a prepayment penalty, many home-owners still have loans with thatrestriction , which could reduce the financial gain of a refinance.

suggested I try some injections and stated that I could avoid surgery. I have had two injections and although I really do not want to have surgery, I am still suffering pain and stiffness. Is there anything I can do that might help me along with the injections to avoid surgery?

Mary H. - Prairieville, Louisiana

Mary - In conjunction with the injections that you have received, it would be beneficial to strengthen the muscles surrounding the knee. The stronger you canget the muscles, the better they can support the knee and thus assist in decreasingpain. Feel free to call our clinic at any time to schedule an assessment and I willdemonstrate several exercises that will specifically address this problem.

ASK THE EXPERT AT DUTCHTOWN PHYSICAL THERAPY SHOULD NOT BEUSED FOR A SERIOUS MEDICAL ISSUE IN PLACE OF SEEING A PHYSICIAN.

Good morning, class. I will beyour substitute teacher today asProfessor Phite N. DeSistem hasbeen relieved of his duties here atWossamatta U. for comparingRep. Vance McAllister-“TheKissing Congressman”-to Sen.David Vitter-“The WorkingGirl’s Best Friend”-and callingthem both hypocrites.

You can call me CoachDelaune or Wild Bill fromPrairieville or Sweet William butyou don’t have to call meJohnson. In fact, when I wascoaching high school baseball, some of the fans even called me“Sweet Old Bill”-or at least bythose initials-as in “Why doesn’tthat S.O.B. ever bunt?”

Today’s lesson will cover several subjects including history, language, cultural literacy andodds and probability. And tokeep a timely topic-since we’renot allowed to discussRemorseful Republicans anymore-we will concentrate on thatannual rite of spring known asthe Kentucky Derby.

Every first Saturday in Maysince 1875, three-year old thoroughbreds have raced a mileand a quarter to see which colt-or filly-has the speed andstamina to win the “Run for the Roses”.

The official song-for you musicmajors-is “My Old KentuckyHome” written by StephenFoster and modified from its19th century second line, “…It’ssummer, the darkies are gay…”to “…It’s post time, the bettorsmust pay…” to be more politi-cally correct.

Some of you liberal artsmajors-who know just enough tobe aggravating but not enoughto get a real job and might becleaning windows after gradua-tion- would be wise to rememberthat the track is the only placewhere the windows clean you.

Now let’s talk about some-thing you college kids are reallygood at-drinking. The officialdrink of the Derby is the MintJulep. To prepare this concoction, make a sickening-sweet syrup out of powderedsugar and water, insert a fewsprigs of fresh mint and pourover crushed ice.

Then, throw that crap awayand pour a jelly glass full of goodKentucky bourbon-Jim Beamwould be my choice-and enjoythe race. With those prelims outof the way, let’s see what we canlearn from the horses themselvesby the power of association.Remember, horse sense is thatquality which keeps horses frombetting on humans.

I’ll begin with our hometown

favorite Vicar’s In Trouble-aLouisiana bred ridden by thedarling of the Fairgrounds RosieNapravnik. She will certainly bethe cutest jockey in the race-thatwon’t even be a contest if you’veever seen Calvin Borel-and sheloves to beat the boys.

Make note of the fact that avicar was a substitute-especiallyfor a religious figure in Jolly OldEngland-and the word “vicari-ously” is derived from that term.As in, “Tim is going to theDerby this year and I can’t go.So I’ll have to live vicariouslythrough his trip.”

Vicar was also the grandfatherof our local hero and his sire wasnamed Into Mischief-hence thename Vicar’s In Trouble. Seehow easy that was. Now whowants to try one? How aboutyou, Mr. Shoemaker?

“Okay, I pick the horse namedHoppertunity. The race is onlytwo weeks after Easter and Ithink he’ll come hopping homelike Peter Cottontail.”

Well, not the educational reference I was hoping for butany colt trained by Bob Baffertcan certainly run like a rabbit.Anyone else? Ms. Delahoussaye?

“Being a double major inShakespeare and World History, I find Cairo Prince and intrigu-ing choice-especially since hisdad Prince of the Nile remindsme of the Queen of the Nile,Cleopatra. If he can run likeCaesar and Antony ran towardCleo, his backers won’t be in de-nial when they cash their winning tickets.

Now we’re getting somewhere. How about you, Mr. Jindal?Anything jump out at you?

“You uncultured knaves musthave been educated in aCommon Core curriculum.

Based on names alone, the winner is most likely to be theaptly titled Samraat-an Indianterm that means ‘Emperor’ or‘Greatest King in the World’.Sort of like what I aspire to beone day.”

Ambitious is hardly a strongenough word for you, Piyush, but your Hindu horse is certainlya strong candidate.

Would someone wake up Mr.Zonker there in the back andinvite him to join the discussion?

“(Sputtering) Oh-um-sorry,Coach. I was ‘CaliforniaDreaming’ of days gone by whenthe Camaros and GTO’s ruledthe West Coast drag strips. Ifyou could find a horse to runlike those muscle cars, you’dhave a cinch in the Derby.”

Strangely enough, Zonker, some folks out West think theyhave one this year and with aname you can appreciate-California Chrome. No one’seven come close to this speedballas he’s won three races this yearby a total of 20 lengths. Theonly problem, class, is that we’renot the only ones who knowabout him. So, with apologies toDrew Carey, the price may notbe right.

Excuse me, Ms. Peta, but youseem a bit upset with this dialogue. Did we say somethingto offend you?

“No, it’s just that the idea ofthose beautiful animals beingwhipped unmercifully to gobeyond their capabilities for theenjoyment of hedonistic humans. And then to name one of themDead Wildcat or something likethat. It’s no wonder they’redead. With all the developmentin this area, the wildlife hasnowhere to go.”

Begging your pardon, Ms.

Peta, but I think the horse you’realluding to is named Wildcat Redand if he takes to the KentuckyBlue Grass as well as he did tohis native Florida sawgrass, hecould be the “cool cat” in theWinner’s Circle.

How about a comment fromone of our out-of-state students.Mr. Kennedy, did Massachusettsever have a party like they do inLouisville?

“No sir, but we did have aBoston Tea Party once thatwas…”

“(Interrupting) Tea Party-that’s the only way to save thiscountry from these left-wing,life-hating, low-life liberals.Does anyone remember theConstitution? Has anyone evenread the Constitution? Is theConstitution still…”

Calm down, Mr. Ryan. You’llget a chance to speak in a second. This isn’t “The View”you know. Even you pre-lawstudents must learn some etiquette. Now, Mr. Kennedy, you were saying…

“The biggest race in our area isthe Boston Marathon and afterthe tragic bombings last year, werallied around the slogan ‘BostonStrong’. Then along comes thishorse this year who uses anotherfavorite adjective of ours to com-bine into ‘Wicked Strong’ and hewins the Wood Memorial in NewYawk. If he duplicates that performance in the Derby, hecould be the biggest thing tocome out of the Northeast since-well, the Kennedys.”

And Mr. Ryan, you may beglad to know that there is ahorse named Constitution for allyou Rainy Day Patriots. And hecan really ramble-sometimeslonger than a Tea Party

filibuster-as evidenced by hisFlorida Derby victory.

“(Sudden group singing fromthe back of the room) Who cantake the sunrise, Sprinkle it withdew, Cover it in chocolate and amiracle or two… The CandyMan can…”

Why, have I been ignoring my Theatre majors? I know how you love being the centersof attention.

“Sorry, Coach. We’re doing‘Willy Wonka and the ChocolateFactory’ for our spring produc-tion and sometimes we just burst into ‘Candy Man’. Youknow how it is-you taught drama once.”

And it would be a tragedy ifCandy Boy-another one of thoseCalifornia comets-doesn’t getinto the Derby because of thecontroversial point system. Butif he does-look out. He may justbe dancing all the way to the finish line.

Say, what are your computertechs staring at so intently onyour PC screen?

“It’s a site called the Chive,Coach. You’d enjoy it. Thereare clever posters, cool merchandise for sale and-uh-other things of interest.”

Like scantily-clad youngwomen? Come on, guys. I maynot be Mr. Technology but I discovered that site a while back. Now, may I suggest a spinoff sitecalled Tapiture which is also the

name of a Derby contender whogets into more trouble than-well,than students looking at inappropriate websites in class.

Now for your assignment-youare all to take $100 in fantasymoney and wager it on theKentucky Derby. You can stickto the traditional win-place-showor you can attempt some moreexotic bets like exactas (first twofinishers), trifectas (first three) orsuperfectas (first four).

Your work will be graded on acurve-a Commanding Curve, ifyou will-because that is the horseI placed a $50 futures wager onin Vegas on Super Bowl Sunday.

Alas, Curve now finds himselfin the same boat as Candy Boy-lacking the needed points toget into the race but miracles do happen.

As for me, I’m going to usemy C-note to box several combi-nations of “C-horses”. That willgive me California Chrome forZonker, Cairo Prince for the his-tory majors, Constitution for thelaw students and Candy Boy forthe performing arts.

Now let’s sit back and “c”what’s going to happen.

ToProcrastinateor Not to

Procrastinate.That is theQuestion.

I’m guilty. I have procrasti-nated during my life. Matter-of-fact I procrastinated writing this article.

Procrastination is probablyone of the easiest things I do.You should see my dishes in thesink when I know no one iscoming around.

There are times to procrasti-nate and times not to. If youcome across a live rattle snakein the woods. It is time to pro-crastinate. It is time to delay orpostpone any action for youcould get a bite you may notrecover from.

If you hurt your sweetheart’sfeelings you should not procrastinate to apologize. Itmay be your last time to talk toher of which you may notrecover.

If your dog has an accidenton your floor, it is alright toprocrastinate from the ugly jobof cleaning it up. However ifyou have dinner plans thatevening and you are cooking atyour house you can not procrastinate. Get the papertowels.

This past month I had a situ-ation at my home of which Iprocrastinated and I shouldn’thave done that.

For about a week I had start-ed noticing a pungent odor likean animal had died in the areaand it was progressively gettingworse. It got worse and worse. Then I thought about and oldrefrigerator I have down stairsand the freezer had frozen deermeat in it. I soon found out itwasn’t frozen anymore.

I eased up to the door andtook a peek and it wasn’t pretty. There were a few signs ofmagots and I closed the door

and bungee corded it real tightto help keep the smell downwhile I figured what to do andhow to clean this mess.

Well, I soon hit my procrasti-nation button and went andworked in my garden and drankbeer. Like Scarlet O’Hara, “I’llthink about that tomorrow.

Well, tomorrow came andwoke to an even stronger smell

than the day before. As I organized a bucket, a shoveland a cloth’s pen for my nosemy phone rang. I received a call

that their was a great golf gamegoing on at Pelican Point.

I had a tough decision. Toplay golf or shovel rotten meat.I lied. It was an easy decision.Get my clubs. I could do thefreezer after golf. What couldthat hurt.

I had a great round of golf.Got my mind off my worries. Ieven won $2. Life was goodand I had totally forgot aboutthe freezer chore until I gothome. One step out of the carand I was reminded immediate-ly. Crap. I’m back on rottenmeat detail.

Suddenly I remembered EastAscension was playing a baseballgame that evening. The weatherwas cooling down and in myprocrastinating mind I con-vinced myself the smell wouldbe better on a cooler day, liketomorrow. Off to the baseballgame I go. Watched the game.Went out to eat. Came homeand jumped in the bed and gota good night sleep.

The next morning was D-Day. Dead Deer Day.

This fridge is in the back ofmy carport. First, I had to cleara path wide enough for my 4wheeler to back up to thefridge. I placed a big plasticbucket on the back of the bike.

I grabbed a shovel and removedthe bungee cords and took alook for the first time in 4 days. When I opened the door I was

horrified with the stench andgross visuals. From the crack inthe door it was as if RiceCrispy’s were falling out andthe magots were 4 inches deep.

OMG. How in the hell did itget this bad. I’ll tell you. I pro-crastinated. Now I am about tolearn a lesson of a life time.

I can tell you a cloths pinwasn’t going to cut it. Iwrapped a towel around myhead and I looked like I was aTaliban Fighter. No way was Igoing to smell through theselayers of cloth. Wrong again.

OK the doors open, every-thing seems to be moving and Igo to shoveling hind quartersand neck roast. Help me Lord.

I was able to empty the freezer into the bucket. Now Ihave to get on the 4 wheeler. The bucket shifts up against myback as I start to drive. Thecontents are sloshing around abit and now I’m afraid of notjust smelling it. One wrongbump and it’s touching my skinand I’m wearing it. I’m in procrastination Hell. I easedown the driveway and somekids were riding bikes. Theycaught one whiff and soon they were peddling like PeeWee Herman.

I made it to the pond without incident. I dumped thetoxic cargo, rode off up wind, and took a break by the garden.

I sat and pondered the mistake I had made for procrastinating the freezer project.

I had been sitting there forabout 5 minutes when I noticeda shadow moved across thelandscape. I saw another andanother. I looked up to find 6buzzards circling my house. Now these birds were high andwith in minutes they startedlanding in my trees. They certainly weren’t scared of me.Matter-of-fact, they kept look-ing at me like, “Where’s thelunch?”

A Sheriff Deputy drove bythe house and I wondered ifsomeone had called in a deadbody. Is NCIS going to showup?

I hosed the fridge down andCloroxed it. To this day aspring breeze will drift by mynose and I receive an unpleasant reminder of thethoughts of procrastinationHELL!

Thoughts from Bully

If your freezer goes out? You better tie a towel around your head real tight before you open it.

We'd decided to make thefishing trip anyway althoughdeep inside we knew the deckwas stacked against us. A majorcold front had blown throughthe day before bringing hardwind and cold temperatures. Wehad fished for about an hour atour first spot and had not gotten a bite yet. I was sittingthere trying to warm my handswhen out of nowhere an ospreydives out of the sky and catchesthis fairly large fish. With thisprey in his grasp he flies to thenearest power line and begins toeat his catch. Bird one, us fishermen zero.

A short time later we beganto discuss our decision to fishon this this type of day, alongwith what our next move wouldbe. While we were sitting therequestioning our intelligence, wehad the pleasure to witness avery large blue heron catch andeat a foot long garfish.Although it was only a garfish,it was still a fish. Somethingthat we had not had any contactwith. Birds two, fishermen zero.We left that area and continuedfishing elsewhere and finallyboated six fish for a full day offishing. I don't know how manymore fish the birds caught thatday, but I would have to saythat they were more successfulthan us.

By far, buzzards are not afavorite bird of humans. Mostof us probably understand theresponsibility of the large bird, but it is hard to accept thethought of eating somethingthat's rotten. For whatever reason a large flock of buzzardshas decided to roost on thestructure of one of the operating units of BASF. Theysleep there at night and ventureout during the day in search of food.

About a week after our notso successful fishing trip, I wastraveling one of the roads in themassive BASF complex when I

noticed a dead duck in theroad. This particular road passesnear the facilities' fire waterpond. It's not uncommon tosee ducks there in the winter. The speed limit there is fifteenmiles an hour, how that duckgot hit is a mystery to me. Ontop of that, the dead duck was amale wood duck, not typicallythe species seen in the pond.

I continued on my missionand about a half an hour later Ireturned and noticed severalbuzzards feasting on the deadduck. When I returned fifteenminutes later, there was noteven a feather in the road. What's amazing to me is howthose those creatures can tellthe difference from a dead duckor a piece of paper in the roadfrom thousands of feet in thesky.

Natures creatures are trulyremarkable in many ways. Theyare faced with very harsh k7conditions at times but theyare survivors. Humans are atthe top of the food chain. Buteven though we have the mostadvanced equipment available, Istill can't tell a dead duck froma piece of trash from thousandsof feet away or even outfish abird on any given day.....

Till Next Time,

"Enjoy Natures Creatures"

Second to none. That’s what can besaid about high school softball inAscension Parish. Whether its facili-ties, coaching, commitment or resultson the field the ladies of Dutchtown,East Ascension and St Amant take aback seat to no one.The goal of every softball team in thestate from the start of the season is toadvance to Sulphur and participate inthe FastPitch56 tournament. It’s atwo day event where the top eight ineach of the LHSAA’s seven classescoverage in southwest Louisiana tocrown their champions. Its where St Amant was crowned fivetimes, consecutively, between 2002and 2006. It is where all threeschools have become fixture, seldomis FastPitch56 played when Ascensionisn’t represented. A year ago St.Amant and Dutchtown did the hon-ors.

When asked the secret to the localsuccess East Ascension head coachAmy Pitre had a couple thoughts“The travel ball around, and the factthat more kids are playing fastpitch atan earlier age. I truly believe that theexpectations that we have at the highschools are a big factor. We expect towin and we expect to compete withthe best in the state.”This past winter that softball commit-ment was recognized when formerLady Gator Leah Heintze was induct-ed into the Louisiana High SchoolAthletic Association/Louisiana HighSchool Coaches Association Hall ofFame. Heintz went 97-7-7, was aperfect 19-0 in the playoffs, andnamed La Miss Softball in 2004. Herinduction is validation of the softballprowess in Ascension and a bench-mark for future players to strive. While we don’t know the exact seed-ings of the playoffs at deadline, we doknow that all three schools can befound on the bracket when it isreleased. It wouldn’t be a surprise if

all three made appearances atFastPitch56 this season and it’s notinconceivable that someone in thatgroup could hoist a championshiptrophy.

DutchtownThe Dutchtown Lady Griffinsadvanced to FastPitch 56 a year agobefore losing to eventual StateChampion Sam Houston in the quar-terfinals. If they hope to replicate, orexceed that success, they will have tofind someone to fill the shoes of AleahCraighton (now at ULL), Tia

Patterson (BRCC) and Akela Gordon.“Aleah was a big hitter, our numberthree batter” said Head Coach NancyEnsminger “Tia Patterson was ourleadoff hitter and shortstop, and Akela

Gordon was our centerfielder”.This year the Lady Griffins turn toseniors to Jessica Crum, HannahSchexnailder, Ashara Grimes, ShelbyNewcomer, and Kayla Orgeron tohelp replace the production and lead-ership roles left behind. CoachEnsminger, in her 8th year as headcoach of the Lady Griffins feels goodabout her seniors “it’s a good groupof senior girls, it’s a core group ofgirls that have been playing togetherfor a long time, so there is prettygood chemistry between them”.Leading the group of seniors is Crum,a four year starter behind the plate, and one of the most feared power hit-ters in the state. “She has probablybeen intentionally walked by everyonethat has watched her, know her, orcharted her, they just put her onbase” Ensminger said of Crum. When opponents employ that strategyhowever, they must then contendwith Bria White. “She loves to be inthose situations, she doesn’t get nerv-ous about it, she just thinks ‘Lets DoIt’” Ensminger says of White. Two of those seniors take turns in thecircle in Kayla Orgeron, a BRCCsignee, and Ashara Grimes. Theyshare the pitching duties with a soph-omore Ali McCoy. “They all havehad pretty much equal time outthere” Ensminger said of her pitchingcorp. “Kayla is coming off shouldersurgery last year, she has come a longway and really improved. Ali has beengood for us, she has learned so muchsince she has been here. I’m definite-ly looking forward to her future. Wejust have to play solid defense behindall of them”.

Its defense that Ensminger believeswill be a defining ingredient goinginto the playoffs. “One thing youwant to see as a coach is solid defenseand we need to see that innings onethrough seven. Hope Vezinat hasbeen such a solid defensive player forus, she’s such a good versatile player.Bria White, we can put her anywhere. She’s been playing rightfield, when Aliis on the mound we move her to firstbase, if we have to we can put herbehind the plate, I can put her any-where out there.” Not to be over-looked for the Lady Griffins is RoyelleCobb “she is a silent but deadlyweapon in my opinion” Ensmingerssaid and added “she’s not real flashy, but she’s solid, she gets the job done. She speaks when she needs to, a greatsilent leader, the same thing with

It’s open season this year, it’swho plays the best defense behindyour pitcher. There are a lot of goodhitting teams out there, we just needto step it up in the circle and playdefense behind her”.

East AscensionAfter having reached the FastPitch56tournament the three previous sea-sons, East Ascension fell in the firstround of the playoffs a year ago toSuphur. Amy Pitre, in her 7th year atthe helm, realizes just how good agroup she had to replace from a year

ago “we lost a core group who hadstarted as freshmen on their way up”.Foremost amongst that group wasBailey Landry, an LSU signee who is

currently starting for the Lady Tigers.Pitre said of Landry “She was ourleadoff, she was like an automaticdouble. If you walk her she was steal-ing second. She was a threat in thelineup, to steal bases, hit for power, she led us in RBI”This year the Lady Spartans are notonly young, but inexperienced as well. Many are starting for the first time onthe varsity level but thus far throughthe season that hasn’t slowed theSpartans. One of the reasons behindthat success is Carmisha Payton andthe senior leadership she provides.“Carmisha is doing great job for us asa leader, even off the field, leading offthe field as an example to these youngones” Pitre said of Payton. Theyouthful Lady Spartans feature onlytwo other seniors on the squad, AnneMarie Arceneaux, who has been pro-viding a quality bat all season andMarina Speligene who brings an ele-ment of speed to the lineup. However, it is youth that is being

The Spartans have that insophomore shortstop ClaireWeinberger who is already committedto LSU. “I put her in Bailey’s role”Pitre said of Weinberger “she doeswhat Bailey could do. She’s a threat, she can lay down a bunt, she can slap, she can power slap or she can swingaway.”Another sophomore in the limelightfor the Lady Spartans is righthandedpitcher Jesse Watts, a starter as afreshman and has thrown nearly everyinning this season. “Last year she wasreally good for us and she has justgotten better. She’s got a year underher belt and she learned a lot ofthings within that year” Pitre said,“She’s learned where she can leave theball and where she can’t”. When youask Coach Pitre about Watts howevershe doesn’t want to have to choosewhether to take her as a hitter or apitcher. “I don’t know whats moreimportant, what she is doing offen-sively is outstanding as well”Coach Pitre likes the way things are

progressing with her young squad. “Itruly believe that every game we havegotten better. We knew we wouldhave to learn from experience, wewere going to make some mistakesand we would have to learn from itand I think we did”.Looking ahead to the playoffs with ayoung team doesn’t change the out-look for East Ascension according toPitre “Our goals never change, nomatter how young we are, you wantto be in Sulphur at the end of theyear. We expect to win and expect tocompete with the best in the state. The kids know that, so it’s a matter ofstaying focused throughout. You haveto be playing good at this time of theyear”.

St AmantAs good as all the local schools havebeen in softball over the past decade,St Amant is still the gold standard bywhich all other programs are judged. The Lady Gators have been to theFastPitch56 tournament in 12 of thelast 13 years and brought home fiveconsecutive championships from

2002-2006. A yearago they advanced tothe semi-finals beforefalling to SamHouston 4-2. While most teamswould wonder whatto do after losingstandouts like pitcherKasey Neilson(SoutheasternLouisiana), catcherBrooke Roberts(Pearl River CC) andcenterfielder KirstenDispino, all theGators have done isback up those losseswith an unprecedent-ed ten seniors.Amazingly five ofthose seniors havesigned to continuetheir careers at thenext level as MaddieEdmonston, JaciLavigne and JordanHartman will bemoving on to LSU-Eunice while pitcherSkylar Cook (Pearl

River CC) and Ali Delany (NWFlorida) extend their careers as well.“These kids have tremendous chem-istry, eight of the ten have been play-ing together since 10 and under, andbelieve me, that chemistry goes a longway” said Scott Neilson of his seniorclass. “They believe in each other, they love each other, and get alongreally well with each other and thatgoes a long way in the clubhouse.” Aclass this large could be a curse ratherthan a blessing but that hasn’t beenthe case for St Amant. “It’s a me nowgeneration, kids aren’t willing to putin the time, the effort, the energy, andcommitment to the program, theywant results now” Nielson said. Headded “We have three or four kidsnow who are first year starters as sen-iors. I applaud them and commend

them tremendously for the effort theyput in to work and hold on knowingtheir time was coming”With all the talent the senior classcontains, it’s a junior who is perhapsthe best athlete at St Amant HighSchool regardless of gender.Shortstop Kara Gremillion, a UL-Lafayette commitment, is a multi-sport athlete who truly excels at all.“She could sell out a gym for volley-ball, sell out a gym for basketball andsell out the bleachers for softball, andprobably start on the football team”Nielson said “She’s just that good ofan athlete. She’s a very quiet, lead byexample kind of player. I don’t knowif Kara has ever had a bad game.”Cook inherits the spot in the circlepreviously occupied by CoachNielson’s daughter Kasey, an all-stater, and has stepped up for theLady Gators. “Skylar has done well, very well” Nielson said of hisrighthander, “I think her best softballis still ahead of her, as her experiencegrows.”When it comes to winning in theplayoffs, Nielson knows a thing orfive (rings) about what it takes at thistime of year. Without hesitation hiskey to playoff success this year is sim-ple, “Timely hitting! It doesn’t mat-ter how many hits you get, it mattershow many hits you get when youneed them. We have to make sure wedon’t make any mistakes in the circle. We have to hit spots, change speeds,it’s all about movement and locationyou can’t leave it big”. This year 5Adoesn’t appear to feature that domi-

nate pitcher in the mold of Corbelloat Sam Houston a year ago. In factaccording to Nielson “I think num-ber six (Cook) for the Gators can beas dominate as anybody.”
