The VSCC awards night was held in the rather grand Heythrop ParkHotel in Oxfordshire on 21st March. The club has a large array ofornate and valuable trophies collected over the years and these wereon display. Dood Pearce was the recipient of the Navigator’s Cup for2011 and collected it amid applause from the large audience. (Theclub has around 8,000 members). The following day Dood had time to examine the silver trophy andfound it engraved with ornate old writing. Many of the trophies havebeen used previously and this is what he read:-

Brecknockshire Agricultural Society 1870. Presented by theMarquis Camden to Wm de Winton Esq. for the best and cleanest cropof Turnips Perhaps turnip growers make the best navigators!!!

Club Vice-President Phil MacDonell was the guest speaker at thisyears Awards Presentation evening at Boughton Golf Club. He is justfinishing his year as Golf Captain and therefore felt quite at home inthe surroundings. In his speech he reminisced about his early days in motorsportwhich included acting as “Chase Car” for Geoff Wooldridge on the1975 RAC Rally. During one set of three stages in Southern Scotlandhe and his crew had particular difficulty getting to the end of each stagein time and only just made it. Geoff was so impressed that he said theydeserved a bottle of champagne, however this was never forthcoming. A bit later on in the evening Geoff won a bottle of “Bubbly” in theraffle and duly presented it to Phil as promised all those years ago.Afterwards Phil told us that he and his other two “chase car” crewmembers were going on holiday together and that they would open thebottle to celebrate, even if it was 37 years after the event! The food at the Golf Club was excellent although a number ofaward winners did not attend, which is a sad reflection of the club atpresent, or, just maybe, Easter Saturday evening is not the best time tohold the presentation. All those who did attend had an excellent entertaining evening. The Broken Piston Award for the biggest cock-up of the year went to arather surprised Ben Williams for having some ribs broken by a bull onhis farm. I have heard of some different excuses for not competing, butthis was a bit extreme! The Ladies Championship went to a delighted pensioner andgrandmother, Pauline Pearce. (It was also her wedding anniversary). The Allbrakes Trophy was won by the Club President, MartinBowcott, for all the work he does behind the scenes which we never getto hear about. It was nice to see him fit and about after his illness lastyear. He has already scored points in this years marshallingchampionship. Many thanks to Andy Wooldridge for all his organisation of thisyears Awards Night, it was an excellent evening. Dood

"Motorsport is an industry of which our country should be proud," saysNick Fry.The Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) confirmed today that NickFry, CEO of the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team,is to join their Executive Committee from April 2012.Nick's business acumen, gained from the automotive and motorsportindustries over three decades, will complement the knowledge andexperience of other well-known members of the Committee. Nick wasrecently appointed a UKTI Business Ambassador by the Prime Minis-ter, and this well-earned and influential appointment will help themotorsport industry, and MIA members, to facilitate access throughoutgovernment.Nick Fry said: "I am delighted to join the MIA's Executive Committee, and to be able to play a role in showcasing the remarkable contributionwhich the motorsport industry makes to Great Britain. The breadth ofapplication of our high performance technology spreads well beyondmotorsport into everyday life. The MIA plays an important role inhighlighting this contribution, as well as bringing the passion andexcitement of motorsport to a new generation. The motorsport sectorcontinues to grow, thrive and diversify; it's an industry our countryshould be very proud of."Chairman of the MIA Committee, Alistair Fergusson of Alcon Compo-nents said: "The MIA will benefit from Nick's clear thinking andstrategic approach. His extensive senior-level experience at the highestlevels of motorsport, and the automotive sector, will provide invalua-ble to our members, I feel sure."Lord Drayson, MIA Honorary President, commented: "It is great newsthat Nick Fry is joining the MIA Executive Committee. The Barbados Motorsport Federation (BMF) has become the latest overseasNational Sporting Authority (ASN) to benefit from the MSA’s expertise in itscapacity as an FIA Institute Regional Training Provider (RTP).MSA International Trainers Allan Dean- Lewis and Nigel Drayton visited theisland in March to undertake a training needs analysis for the BMF, which ispreparing an application to the FIA Institute for grant aid for officials’ safetytraining.

“We all really appreciated meeting Allan and Nigel and were very impressedwith their depth of motor sport experience, their ability to quickly identify ourstrengths and weaknesses and their initial suggestions for assisting us withtraining at all levels,” said John Sealy, Vice-President of the BMF.Dean-Lewis added: “We have supported the BMF for a number of years withadvice and resources particularly in the area of marshals training, and wewere most appreciative of the BMF’s invitation for us to formally assist theirfurther development in our RTP role. Despite its small geographical area, the huge success of their Rally Barbados and their enthusiasm for theirother motor sport activities was quite electric, much of it based around theirfixed venue at Bushy Park. We look forward to developing our work with theBMF for in the future.”Any surplus funds generated by the MSA through its international trainingprojects are used to benefit future training of volunteer officials in the UK.

National Rally Coach James Wozencroft and National Co-driver Coach NickyGrist mentored Team UK’s rally drivers and navigators in the run-up to the BulldogInternational Rally of North Wales and the Rally de Portugal.

“We did a lot of work on pace notes and pre-event preparation, as well as takinga look at what they could expect from the stages on both events,” said Wozencroft.

“We also joined Mark Donnelly, Elfyn Evans, and co-drivers Andrew Edwards andJames Morgan on the Bulldog to provide on-event support and guidance; I thinkit really helps their confidence to have people like us in their corner.”

While round one winner Donnelly crashed out of the Bulldog after showingfront-running pace, Evans won the R2 class by almost a minute. Evans, Edwardsand national squad team-mates John MacCrone and Stuart Loudon then headedto Portugal for round one of the WRC Academy, which was won by Team UKgraduate Alistair Fisher.

Evans said: “As Portugal was my debut in the WRC Academy it was particularly helpfulto receive some guidance beforehand. Obviously Nicky has had a long career at worldlevel so it was interesting to get his take on how we approach an international event. Beingmentored by such successful and knowledgeable people is certainly one of the keybenefits of being part of the Team UK programme.”

'HISTORICA' RACE MEETING

The HRDC will dedicate its full programme of five historic races at theCastle Combe 'Historica' meeting on 9 April to the achievements ofAlan Mann, who passed away on 21 March.HRDC Race Director Julius Thurgood relays: "Alan Mann was a greatfriend and mentor to me and his encouragement towards the formationof the HRDC was inspirational, especially when the going was tough. His consistent encouragement and conviction that the HRDC ethos ofserving the historic race driver was worthy of his support has inspiredme to take this project forward to the highest level.

"Alan will be greatly missed by all in the racing fraternity, but especiallyso by all the friends and allies that he made latterly in the historic sector.Hopefully, in time, his son Henry will continue with Alan's plan to runthe Alan Mann Racing Ford Prefect 107E in HRDC Touring Greats thisseason. It would never do to lose the evocative and inspiring sight of theAlan Mann Racing livery in historic racing. Because of Alan's universalpopularity in the HRDC Paddock, it is therefore fitting that the HRDCdedicates all five of its races at Castle Combe to the memory of themany extraordinary achievements and the generosity of spirit that werethe hallmarks of this great man."A specially commissioned trophy dedicated to Alan Mann will beawarded by the HRDC at this meeting, to the competitor/team thatdisplays the key elements of Alan Mann's racing philosophy:

"Preparation, Determination, Presentation and Skill".Some 47 entries alone have been received for the headline HRDC'Touring Greats' 45-minute race event, which bodes well for a fantasticday of historic racing at this traditional April 'Must Do' meeting at thefriendly Castle Combe venue this coming Easter Monday.
