    Patanjali yoga sutra 2

    Yoga Chitta vritti nirodhah

Meaning of yoga is union , union between body and mind, union of jewathma with

paramathma or connecting the self consciousness with supreme consciousness,

union between two purusha and prakruthi, union between consciousness and prana

    shakti or cosmic energy.

Chitta is self consciousness or jewathma conciousness, and chitta can called as

mind consciousness at the mind level there will be sub consciousness and

unconsciousness in the deeper of mind.

Here we are taking Chitta is the mind and mind is modified with the perception,

    memory and ego.

Vritti is thought-wave is a modification of that mental substance. Waves of

thoughts, at the mind level the vrittis are thoughts it makes the fluctuation of mind,

  • Volume: 1 Issue2 April 2014 E magazine

    http://www.theworldunited.org/twuya/index.html Page 4

It is a process of just as waves arise from the surface of the ocean, so also these

Vrittis arise from the surface of the mind.

Vrittis are at the mind level it is movement of thoughts, whirl pool, thought

constructs; emotions, feelings, ego, modifications; fluctuation, thought patterns,

thought processes, wavelike operations, mental machinations, agitations,

disturbance, or dulled mind field, repository of thoughts, that which thinks and

feels; the inner instrument for thinking, perception, cognition; the instrument that

consciousness uses to explore its own manifestation. According to Maharshi

Patanjali, Pramana or comperehension, Viparyaya or misconception, Vikalpa or

imagination, Nidra or sleep and Smriti or memory are the five mental Vrittis or

mental functions. If these five mental functions are suppressed and suppression of

desires which leads to unstable mind. The mind which perceptions the things this

things will be stored in the mind which is called as memory and likes & dislikes

are nature of the mind but not at intellectual level this intellectual tells which is

right and which is wrong but not the mind and the ego comes out when the desire

    will not be achieved.

Vrittis are obstacles and dull minded, At the time of sleep at night time the person

not aware of physical body & mind because of vrittis . Vrittis are obstacles which

keeps the mind dull, because of this vrittis the serpent energy or kundalini not

crossing the manipura chakra at navel regions, kundalini rises up at navel but once

gain it goes back to mooladhara chakra at base of spine it happens to many people

because of vrittis, there are three gunas which is satwa , rajas and tamas. Here we

see the satwa guna person having more consciousness, satwa guna keeps the mind

calm, quiet, and peace then the person having chances to overcome the vrittis but

tamas keeps the mind disturbed, no calmness of mind.

Nirodhah - mastery, control, restrain, coordinate and stillness. Nirodhah is

controlling but not suppressing the thoughts or emotions or desires. Controlling

happens its own by practice of yoga. The vrittis or obstacles should be removed for

achieve the nirodhah. All the negativity will be removed by purifying the mind,

purifying the mind happens by practice of yoga especially Pranayama, relaxation

techniques, and meditation, from the practice of yoga, consciousness will be

expanded the consciousness is voluntary control, consciousness controls the

thoughts and mind, but unconsciousness is involuntary impurities have been stored

in the unconsciousness level which makes fluctuating the mind. Nirodhah is

completely still or state of mastery over the mind and it is state of Samadhi,

Samadhi is the aim of yoga, in Samadhi the self soul will merges with supreme

    soul.

    Consciousness

Consciousness is something which has never been born and which is never going

to die; thats why it is called as Swayambhu. It is all pervading, all percolating,

seen everywhere inside out: of the rock, plant, animal, human being, the stars,

meteors, the space in between, everywhere; it is everything. All that is - is the

consciousness. It functions in the 3 dimensional world otherwise called as social

reality through something called as Anthahkarana

Anthahkarana has 4 dimensions: Manas, Chitta, Ahankaara and Buddhi. These are

the four dimensions where the consciousness applies or functions or operates in the

3 dimensional world, where the 4th dimension is consciousness itself. Let us work

on these 4 dimensions of operations.

  • Volume: 1 Issue2 April 2014 E magazine

    http://www.theworldunited.org/twuya/index.html Page 7

First thing is Manas - the function of consciousness through Manas is by way of

collecting data through all the Gnanendrias and Karmendriyas which are the

sensory and motor inputs of the body. So it is basically the entry of information

    into something called as mind.

Second is Chitta - Chitta means all the images and impressions that we are

carrying. All that is existing as information and all that is existing as memory is

    called as Chitha.

The Third is Ahankaara Ahankaara means Aham Aakaara. Aham means am

ness; Aakaara means giving shape. When you give shape to am ness it turns into

ego, it turns in to personality, it turns in to identity, it turns in to identification. So,

how we want to appear in the world is run by Ahankaara.

The Fourth one is Buddhi - Buddhi means the intellect. What you do with the

images, what you do with the perceptual ideas, ideologies and how you

conceptualise and how you postualise the information that you have in the form of

    memory is called as Buddhi.

So these four things: Manas, Chitta, Ahankaara and Buddhi is called as

Anthahkarana. And consciousness functions in the 3 dimensional world or social

reality through these four dimensions of Anthahkarana.

And coming to the 5th question - what are the factors which give raise its change,

evolution, transformation and awakening? For a common man who is living only

in the social reality, living in the world of competition and comparisons, one day

he finds in one of the incarnations the importance of going within and he starts

working on that. He starts working or discovering the ways of involuting, the ways

of centripetalizing his own consciousness and he finds a way and he works upon

them. There are definitely some factors which make a person move from the

functions of consciousness which I call as epicentre of consciousness, towards

ones center of consciousness. This center of consciousness is called a hara or

Prajna. The word Prajna has two words jna has two meanings one meaning is

knowledge, the second meaning is consciousness. The word jna came from

jnathaha that means the origin of knowledge. The origin is only consciousness.

So, there are two meaning of the word jna - knowledge and consciousness. And

pra means more epicentered, intensified. Intensified consciousness is Prajna

which is otherwise called as Hara, the center of consciousness. The word

synonymous in sanskrit for Hara is Prajna

The factors which move from Anthahkarana to the center of Prajna, the seed

consciousness or grounding consciousness are - one is, one should move away

from ones desperate interest to go with in. The very desperation keeps the result

away. This is called as jignasa. Jignasa means curiosity. Ones curiosity is good

but pathological curiosity is very bad. Here I am treating Jignasa as a factor

which works against you. The second factor can be called as Jihasa. Jihasa

means anxiety. Third factor is called as Prepsa. Prepsa means the sense of

achievement. The Fourth factor is Chikarsa, awakening of consciousness in the

form of doing, treating it as a procedure of getting inside oneself.

  • Volume: 1 Issue2 April 2014 E magazine

    http://www.theworldunited.org/twuya/index.html Page 9

These are the four factors from the vedantic side of yoga which need to be

overcome to reach ones center - to move from Anthahkarana, the superficial or

functional aspect of consciousness to the core or origin or seed of ones

consciousness. Once a person conquers this Jignasa, Jihasa, Prepsa and

Chikarsa, still he needs to eliminates many other factors like Dukha, Bhaya

and Vikalpa Dukha means suffering, Bhaya means fear, Vikalpa means

the mental modifications. These are the factors which need to be worked upon to

reach ones center. The first four factors are like elimination or freedom from

actions that is called as Karya Vimukthi. The later three Dhuka, Bhaya and

Vikalpa are called as Chitta Vimukthi. When we become Muktha from all

these 7 things we move towards centre of consciousness.

    The Essence of Yoga

We know that yoga means to unite. Hence, whatever that unites man to the

supreme consciousness can be called Yoga. In other words, Yoga has no

boundaries or barriers. Yoga essentially subscribes to the very nature of man. Yoga

unites or whatever is uniting is Yoga, irrespective of the nature of every being.

There are various paths and all these paths are aspects of Yoga. Service to

Humanity, Devotion towards an object of power or God, Paths of contemplation

and meditation, path of conscious renunciation, path of shedding the aspects of the

  • Volume: 1 Issue2 April 2014 E magazine

    http://www.theworldunited.org/twuya/index.html Page 11

mind, path of the breath, path of silence, path of nurturing awareness, yoga of

action, yoga of inaction, yoga of restraint, so on and so forth are all aimed at

dissolving the limited mind to the supreme consciousness.

Every path has potential. Every path is relevant to someone. How to choose the

path? Simple It is the path that chooses you based on your nature. What makes

you connect easily is the right path for you. What makes you comfortable to

practice will work for you. What adds stress is not your path. This is the problem

that man faces when he follows others opinions. Others cannot understand your

nature completely. Only you can experience your nature based on what suits you.

Nature of a being is not always clearly understood by oneself and depends on likes

and dislikes to determine ones nature, orientation, so on and so forth. Nature is

formed out of character traits. Nature represents the true constitution of the

individual. One can be aggressive, passive, silent, loud, creative, destructive,

optimistic, pessimistic, kind, cruel, sadistic, cynical, compassionate, loving etc.

And nature is always a mixture of many aspects as well. Nature can also be

situational too. Having understood that, it must be clearly understood that a path

suitable for one may not appeal to another. Hence, it is important to walk ones

own path towards liberation based on ones instinct, comfort, do ability, inclination

and most importantly nature. This is why the path of knowledge, path of devotion

and path of liberating action apart from path of the royal (Raja Yoga) is clearly

defined in our ancient scriptures. Everything suits somebody.

The very reason for all the paths and all religions which represent paths are the

mans quest for liberation. Liberation is what the soul craves for. Liberation from

the birth and death! Liberation from all the lower frequencies of existence such as

anger, hatred, jealousy, revenge and the inclination to hurt other for the sake of

possessions and possessiveness. Every aspect of lower frequency binds man to

earth and repeats his existence through many bodies as well as time and space.

  • Volume: 1 Issue2 April 2014 E magazine

    http://www.theworldunited.org/twuya/index.html Page 12

When man became awakened to this fact, he chose to seek liberation. Liberation

does not come easy. Every desire must dissolve and mind should become totally

still or thought-free before man can raise his awareness to that of the universal

    awareness.

The craving of the trapped soul which repeatedly took birth on earth for the sake of

gratification pushes the mind towards liberation. Whatever expressions in the form

of spirituality, spiritual seekers, masters, gurus and religions are all the visible

expressions of this craving of the soul for liberation. In this craving, whatever

unites man to the path of liberation is called Yoga.

Thus, Yoga unites oneself to ones self as well as it unites ones self to the

universal self. Ones nature is the gateway to ones self while ones self itself is the

    gateway to the supreme self.

Evolution is coiled within us (Kundalini)

A Documentary Feature Film by 7 Dots Media

    http://www.7dotsmedia.com/

    Kundalini Explained

Kundalini is the powerful life force energy located at the base of the spine in the

body of all humans. It is a reservoir of Divinity latent within us all, a resource of

energy that when fully awakened allows us to reach our full potential with joy,

peace and unconditional love. Never has the time been so critical for each of us to

transform our lives and the world we live in.

It has been said that to know your body is to know the Universe. Sages and saints

of every culture have attested to the existence of a powerful and mysterious life

force, depicted as a serpent coiled three and a half times at the base of the spine at

the last three vertebrae of the tailbone. Here it lays dormant in most individuals

unless and until awakened through spiritual practices, spiritual sexual activity or by

  • Volume: 1 Issue2 April 2014 E magazine

    http://www.theworldunited.org/twuya/index.html Page 14

spiritual master. This awakening can happen spontaneously or by accident,

    intentionally or by chance.

Everything in the Universe is energy and the human body is no exception.

This source of energy, when utilized properly, can end suffering, increase health,

bring blissful experiences, loving relationships and spiritual/psychic gifts.

Kundalini is the source of power that the worlds most beloved artists,

composers, poets and writers may have tapped into. Many philosophers harnessed

this power within. For thousands of years, Kundalini experiences have been

described in the esoteric teachings of the Hindus, Egyptians, Tibetans, Chinese,

Native Americans, Shamans, the Bushmen of Africa, Masons and others. The

divine word Kundalini has been referenced in the Bible and the Koran and other

spiritual texts throughout the world in the spiritual context that would conform to

the teachings given in those sacred documents.

  • Volume: 1 Issue2 April 2014 E magazine

    http://www.theworldunited.org/twuya/index.html Page 15

There has been an increase in Kundalini awareness among the Western populations

since the 1970s. Typically what happens is that Kundalini (Shakti or Divine

feminine energy) who resides at the base of the spine in the first chakra (the first

plexus of energy) slowly makes her ascent up the spine when she has been

awakened. Her role as Divine Energy is to travel to the crown chakra (the top of

the head) to unite with her beloved, Shiva, the Divine masculine energy or Pure

Consciousness, who is inert until the sacred circuit is completed. The sacred union

of magnetic/energetic principles is replicated in tantra, the sacred union of the

opposite polarities of male/female, Siva/Shakti, feminine/masculine. Shaktis duty

is to purify the individual in the soul body, physical body, mental body,

physiological body, emotional body as she ascends, giving us her blessings to

    evolve to our maximum potential.

    Yoga helps people to relax

The more we learn about yoga, the more we realize the benefits aren't all

in the minds of the 20 million or so devotees in the U.S. Yoga helps

people to relax, making the heart rate go down, which is great for those

with high blood pressure. The poses help increase flexibility and

strength, bringing relief to back pain sufferers.

Now, in the largest study of yoga that used biological measures to assess results, it

seems that those meditative sun salutations and downward dog poses can reduce

inflammation, the body's way of reacting to injury or irritation.

That's important because inflammation is associated with chronic diseases

including heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. It's also one of the reasons that

cancer survivors commonly feel fatigue for months, even years, following

    treatment.

Researchers looked at 200 breast cancer survivors who had not practiced yoga

before. Half the group continued to ignore yoga, while the other half received

  • Volume: 1 Issue2 April 2014 E magazine

    http://www.theworldunited.org/twuya/index.html Page 17

twice-weekly, 90-minute classes for 12 weeks, with take-home DVDs and

    encouragement to practice at home.

According to the study, which was led by Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, professor of

psychiatry and psychology at Ohio State University, andcpublished in the Journal

of Clinical Oncology, the group that had practiced yoga reported less fatigue and

higher levels of vitality three months after treatment had ended.

    Laboratory Proof

But the study didn't rely only on self-reports. Kiecolt-Glaser's husband and

research partner, Ronald Glaser of the university's department of molecular

virology, immunology, and medical genetics, went for stronger, laboratory proof.

He examined three cytokines, proteins in the blood that are markers for

    inflammation.

Blood tests before and after the trial showed that, after three months of yoga

practice, all three markers for inflammation were lower by 10 to 15 percent. That

part of the study offered some rare biological evidence of the benefits of yoga in a

large trial that went beyond people's own reports of how they feel.

No one knows exactly how yoga might reduce inflammation in breast cancer

survivors, but Kiecolt-Glaser lays out some research-based suggestions. Cancer

treatment often leaves patients with high levels of stress and fatigue, and an

inability to sleep well. "Poor sleep fuels fatigue, and fatigue fuels inflammation,"

she says. Yoga has been shown to reduce stress and help people sleep better.

Other smaller studies have shown, by measuring biological markers, that expert

yoga practitioners had lower inflammatory responses to stress than novice yoga

  • Volume: 1 Issue2 April 2014 E magazine

    http://www.theworldunited.org/twuya/index.html Page 18

practitioners did; that yoga reduces inflammation in heart failure patients; and that

yoga can improve crucial levels of glucose and insulin in patients with diabetes.

    Yoga for Other Stresses

Cancer is an obvious cause of stress, but recent research has pointed to another

contributing factor: living in poverty. Maryanna Klatt, an associate professor of

clinical family medicine at Ohio State University, has taken yoga into the

classrooms of disadvantaged children. In research that has not yet been published,

she found that 160 third graders in low-income areas who practiced yoga with their

teacher had self-reported improvements in attention.

"Their teachers liked doing it right before math, because then the kids focused

better on the math work," she says. "Telling a kid to sit down and be quiet doesn't

make sense. Have them get up and move."

While it would be too complicated and intrusive to measure biological responses to

yoga in schoolchildren, Klatt has done similar research on surgical nurses, who are

under the daily stress of watching suffering and death. She said she found a 40

percent reduction in their salivary alpha amylase, a measure of the fight-or-flight

    response to stress.

And she's about to begin teaching yoga to garbage collectors in the city of

Columbus before they head out on their morning shift. At the moment, her

arrangement with the city is not part of a study. She just hopes to make their lives

less stressful. And she does not plan to check their inflammatory response, though

    she admits she'd love to.

    Meditation

    Meditation is not.

    Meditation is not Prayer/Worship

Meditation is not Concentrationnot Meditation requires Concentration

    Meditation is not Contemplation

Meditation is not just a Method

    Meditation is not Doing

Meditation a state of being which comes with emptying oneself

Meditation is choice less awareness born out of the awakening of energy of

    understanding

While there is no singular method which can be called as superior or ultimate, still many

meditation methods advocate the importance of Breath

Here is a way Just Enjoy !!!

Sit Straight ( Sitting Straight makes the alignment of energy properly)

Nose and Navel should be in straight line

Close of your eyes with your hands on the lap

Watch the rise and fall of abdomen with each breath (abdomen raises with every

inhalation and goes within with every exhalation)

Keep the minds eye in the lower abdomen

let the breath be smooth, soft, pause less/jerk less like the flow of oil

    Allow the letting-go phenomenon happen

Let there be no expectation or craving for an experience

Slowly the meditative process starts blossoming

With continuous passive attention on breath, with a feeling of letting-go, slowly the mind

gets emptied and gets focussed on the inner eternal silence and the consciousness

slowly gets internalized. This internalized consciousness has to be maintained

    throughout the day and night.

The Mastery over breath is said to happen when the breath always happen in the

abdomen even during normal daily activities of life. When the breath patterns are

    changed, mind also changes.

Positive feedback on last Electronic magazine

Madhu sudhan Sharma I went through the magazine and it was very practical, informative and

interesting. Looking forward to reading the future issues of the magazine.

it is very good, I am happy to receive it & great job.Y Manohar

Gnanamurthy Hearty congratulations, Went through the articles highly informative and

    educative.

The journal is amazing. We regret that no options can deal with such a guru like you. I pray that

this dream might be fulfilled. tatjana marton..

nitin luhadia its very very nice .. good.

The first issue of the magazine focused on Yoga beyond asana brought out by the WORLD

UNITED Yoga Association (TWUYA) that it is impressive, is an understatement. In fact it is

an attempt to meet the requirements of many thinkers of whom many can be even non

practitioners of any yoga, but live with an unanswered feeling that yoga means nothing but

asana. By reading this magazine, I have confirmed my belief that It is not mere an exercise

of some sort, but it is much more for the human being to know himself.

As lay man with a little familiarity on Patanjali. I feel Patanjali yoga sutras are the first and final

words on yoga. In these days of unrest, everybody is aggrieved for some reason or other. But the

silver lining is that, knowledge is percolating with enormous speed to different layers of the

society; what it needs to be firmly rooted, is more practical applications and research, and

institutionalizing. I am glad that this first issue itself is so informative, and genuine on patanjali

and his yoga sutras. It is dense with the sincerity of purpose. I look forward for their future

    issues. ---------------------------Rao Sambasiva.

    Thank You.
