Pastors Letter January 19/20 This weekend we return to what the church calls Ordinary Time. These are all the days of the year that fill in between the special times of Lent and Easter, Advent and Christmas, and the holy days that are spread throughout the year. It’s the time of green vestments and simpler prayers and music. Ordinary time is also a kind of parable about life and living. We all look forward to special days. Religious celebrations like Christmas and Easter are wonderful. Days like Thanksgiving and New Years bring people together. Personal days like birthdays and anniversaries give us occasions to celebrate. In the midst of it all, however, the vast majority of our days are ordinary days — filled with nothing more special than the chores and the necessities of everyday living. And that, of course, is what makes ordinary time so special. Someone once said that everyone gets 15 minutes of fame. I am not sure if that is true, but I don’t think we are defined by one shining but transitory moment. What makes us who we are and what we ultimately will be remembered for is how the ordinary moments add up. It is the pattern of our lives which really counts. It is our day-to-day living that reveals our character and our virtue. In ordinary time the gospels are the stories of the public ministry of Jesus, the way he helped and healed the people he encountered along the way. The first story of healing is Jesus rescuing a bride and groom from a poorly planned wedding when the wine ran out! What could be more ordinary than that. I bet they were certainly glad Jesus was among the guests. In our own lives things come up. Someone is hurt, someone hurts us. Someone needs healing, someone needs forgiveness. Someone is in trouble. Someone is lonely. A friend needs a favor. A kid needs help with homework. A son or daughter away at college needs a loan, or the loan of a parent's ear on the phone for an hour. You get the idea. I love the seasons of celebration. But ordinary time is great! It’s where we live our lives and it is the opportunity to live the gospel. The simple things are those that add up to make a life well lived: a life of love, hope, and compassion. Welcome back — to ordinary time. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

Monday February 4th at 7:30 PM Why Catholics Like Einstein and Need not be Afraid of Darwin George Sim Johnston

The supposed conflict between science and religion is a staple of modern discourse. But does this conflict really exist? We shall take a look at Darwin's theory of evolution and the question of human origins; modern cosmology; the Galileo affair (which history books still treat as the definitive parting of ways between science and religion); and suggest ways of reading the creation account in the Book of Genesis. The talk will take a cue from the 17th century philosopher Francis Bacon: A little science can lead us away from God, while a fuller understanding of it leads us back again.

OUR LADY OF THE HAMPTONS The anticipated opening of the gymnasium space of the new Wellness Center at OLH is scheduled for the first of the New Year. This project has been a lengthy project during which the encouragement and financial support of the community has been evident. Catholic Schools Week will be observed from January 25-February 3 at OLH. The opening social event will be the Family Pancake Breakfast on Sunday, January 27 featuring a full hot breakfast from 8AM-Noon. Tours of the school will be available as well as an initial welcome to the new Wellness Center. We invite everyone to come for breakfast and a special opportunity to see the school.

The community of Our Lady of the Hamptons invites you to The Grandparents Tea on January 30, 2013 at 1 PM to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. RSVP by January 23rd to the school—283-9140.

By Juan J. Sosa, Pbro., from Liturgia y Canción 2013© 2012, OCP.
