hey say every little girl dreams about her wedding day. I can tell you fi rsthand that this is not true. Seems I was too busy skipping rocks and scraping up my elbows.
But now that I am of an age where my single friends are either out sampling cake or halfway down the aisle, I’ll admit a few whimsical no-tions have surfaced. Mostly I envision lacing up my hiking boots and getting married on a mountain summit. Perhaps even while wearing a frilly white dress.
Thank goodness I’ve found someone who might like to do this with me someday.
Until then, as I continue fi lling my closet with bridesmaid dresses and factoring wedding gift expenses into my monthly budget, I’m per-fectly content marveling at the different ways in which my friends decide to tie the knot.
At one such wedding, come to think of it, the newly married couple literally had their wrists bound together with rope — a traditional Celtic ceremony known as handfasting. For my friends, the ritual was a symbol of their union. In ancient times, though, the bride and groom weren’t supposed to unfasten themselves until their marriage was consummated.
Traditions tend to evolve. Within the pages of PS Bride & Groom,
there are seven local weddings sure to inspire awe — and possibly even a few ideas for your own special day, should you choose to get

T married on a mountaintop or otherwise. But, as our featured newlyweds would agree,
details from the big day aren’t half as important as seeing the bigger picture.
Marriage is a sacred institution — a promise. “Marriage is hard work,” says my paternal
grandmother. She and Papa were married for nearly fi fty-eight years.
On their fi rst date, Jerry told Jean he would marry her someday.
“I laughed out loud,” my grandmother says. But Papa kept calling. “I realized he was a lot of fun to be with, and that
we had essentially the same set of values.” They married at the age of 20, and raised six
children in the Catholic Church.Papa passed away two summers ago. They kept
their vows. “Not every day will be smooth,” my grandmother
refl ects. She offers advice for a successful marriage:1. Live a simple life. 2. Look for ways to compromise.3. Never go to bed angry at each other.“Papa and I felt very strongly that marriage is a
partnership of three — husband, wife and God,” she says. “We fi rmly believe that God got us through some pretty tough times.”
And brought them so much joy.“I could not have chosen a kinder, more tender
and caring spouse.”Joy. Now that’s something every little girl dreams
about. PS

dressThe factor
You’ve found the perfect groom. Now begins the search for the right dress. Here are four basic silhou-ettes, each one designed to accentuate or de-emphasize your womanly attributes. Of course, there’s much else to consider. But once you find a shape that flatters, other factors — such as neckline, fabric and embellish-ments — will allow you to express your unique style. Remember: Feeling beautiful is what matters most.
Ball gown: fitted at the bodice, with a waistline that leads into a full skirt.
This shape flatters full-figured brides, and those built like ballerinas. *See variations of this silhouette on Sam Kearney and Laura Cosner.
Mermaid: fits close to the body from the chest to the knee, then flares out to the hem.
This shape complements hourglass types.
*See this silhouette on Morgan Walters

Trumpet: fits close to the body until the mid-hip, then widens gradually to the hem
(resembling the mouth of a trumpet).
This shape de-emphasizes the waistline for a long, lean look. *See variations of this silhouette on Alicia Gatling,
Jenny Oborne and Lauren Richards.
A-Line: fitted at the bodice and flows out to the ground with an unbroken line
(resembling the outline of an uppercase A).
This shape flatters everyone, which makes it an obvious popular choice.

Adding a traditional champagne toast to a wedding reception can be a considerable added expense. But it doesn’t have to be — especially if you know a few tricks for cutting the cost. For what it’s worth, here’s my two cents:
1. Serve sparkling wine by the half glass. A number of guests may not even like champagne, so it would shameful — let alone wasteful — to leave a percentage of full glasses abandoned. Discuss this option with your catering staff.
2. Do the math. There is a simple formula for calculat-ing how much bubbly you will need to order. If you have one hundred guests and plan to serve each of them a half glass of champagne, multiply number of guests by 3 ounces of wine, then divide by number of ounces per bottle.
100 (guests) x 3 ounces = 300 ounces300 ounces / 25.6 (ounces in a bottle) = 11.71 bottles, or one case of champagne.
3. Take time to find tasty values. There is some pretty lousy tasting cheap champagne out there. On the other hand, there are some great bargains that taste delicious. Here are a couple of suggestions for value selections:
Salmon Creek Brut Sparkling, California, $6.99 BottleCrisp and lively, showing aromas of lemon curd with vibrant flavors of baked apple and spiced nuts.
Kila Cava Sparkling Brut, Spain, $9.99 BottleKila Cava exhibits an expressive, fruity, floral perfume leading to a dry, refreshing palate with excellent underlying acidity.
Riondo Rosé Prosecco, Italy, $13.99 BottleTransparent and very pretty pale rosy pink. Delicate red berries and fresh herbs on the nose; crisp, prickly and fresh on the palate, subtle fruit shaped by good acidity.

They had been dating for three years when, out of the blue, Josh hugged Morgan and said, “I love you, my little girl.” Tears spilled from her blue eyes. “My papa always said that to my nana,” Morgan says. But that wasn’t something Josh could have known. Her grandparents were both deceased. Josh proposed on the beach a year later, on a winter day while he and Morgan were searching for ocean treasures. Three words were etched inside the engagement band: My Little Girl. A late summer wedding was in order. Bridesmaids entered the church to “Over the Rain-bow/What a Wonderful World,” a ukulele medley by Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole. Morgan wore an organza mermaid gown, pearls and
an elegant birdcage veil. Heirlooms were pinned to her bridal bouquet. “Once she stepped into the aisle with her father, all I could think about was how beautiful she was, and how happy I was that this day had finally arrived,” says Josh. The bridal party, which included Morgan’s sister, Josh’s father and the couple’s closest friends, wore navy, khaki and a pale green redolent of dune grass. Ocean treasures, candles, burlap, moss and white hy-drangeas brought Southern, coastal charm to each table at the Fair Barn. As did shrimp and grits. For entertainment: beach music by the Craig Woolard Band, whom Morgan first heard at the 2006 Triangle Beach Music Festival, where she met Josh. And lyrics rang true for Josh and Morgan as they made their grand exit to “With This Ring” by the Platters.

Matthew richards’ memories of 11-year-old Lauren Little are foggy. according to Lauren, though, Matt was the “know-it-all Bible trivia kid” in their sunday school class. they grew up in California, just a short drive up or down the san Diego freeway from one another. they even dated once in high school. But sparks didn’t fly until their freshman year of college, 600 miles apart. Lauren moved to Pinehurst with her family the summer before her senior year of high school. When facebook reconnected the two over a year later, they discovered a surprising commonality: since Lauren had left California, she and Matt had both overcome deeply personal battles, and had done so by seeking spiritual guidance. separately, Matt and Lauren had become Christians.
stories shared, they cultivated a long-distance relationship for over two years. Lauren was enrolled at North Carolina state University; Matt was at Case Western reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. they arranged visits every couple of months. “He was so different than the boy I had grown up around,” says Lauren. Plus, she adds, “He’s really, really ridiculously good-looking. I still melt into a puddle when he looks at me.” Matt proposed at the Court of North Carolina, Lauren’s favorite part of campus, just yards away from the lecture hall where she attended church as an undergrad. Lauren’s pastor performed their wedding ceremony at the Congregational Church of Pinehurst. a reception was held at the Member’s Club at Pinehurst resort. the bride stayed true to her style: simple yet elegant.

Meet Matthew and samantha Kearney, a couple of self-proclaimed nerds who got hitched as any local sci-fi lovers might — with a “Star Wars”- themed wedding at the sunrise theater. they met at a party at appalachian state University in 2007. Matt made sam feel like the only person in the room. and they quickly discovered shared interests: art, video games, science fiction. Love grew. “Marry me,” said one nerd to the other. seventy guests watched Matt and sam exchange original vows onstage last November. and when the groom got teary-eyed, sam’s maid of honor, Jenn, handed him a handkerchief. “she was holding [it] for me,” sam says. Rings were exchanged. Headgear was too — “Star
Wars” helmets for the bride and groom. “He got me my favorite,” says sam. “Boba fett.” Geeky or no, the bride notes there was no shortage of chic on the couple’s Big Day. Silk flowers and peacock feathers were used for hand-made bouquets. Bridesmaids wore emerald dresses. Jenn wore bright purple. But each gal rocked a pair of sapphire colored heels. Minus sam, that is. she ditched her pair for purple Converse sneakers when nerves set in. all the better to dance with anyway. sam and Matt boogied down to Nerdcore rapper MC Chris for their first dance as Mr. and Mrs. Liquid courage made karaoke a hit. even for Matt. “He never sings,” says sam. “But he surprised me with ‘500 Miles’ by the Proclaimers. For aaron and Caroline, an asheville couple who love the simple pleasures of life outdoors, an intimate backyard wedding sounded ideal — especially since aaron’s parents, ryan and Cheryl fox, live on Lake auman. they picked a sunny day in June. flowers were in bloom, and, as if by design, cotton-like clouds crowned a bright blue sky. fifty guests gathered there to watch. Two flower girls traipsed down the aisle tossing yellow rose petals. the third, aaron and Caroline’s daughter, Madyline, teetered along, escorted by Cheryl fox. a yellow rose was placed in an empty chair to honor Caroline’s father, Bill Duval, among other deceased loved ones. the bride walked down the aisle with her mother.
aaron’s father, ryan, was his best man. “He’s everything I strive to be,” says the groom of his dad. During the ceremony, Danny Infantino and seren Lyerly played traditional wedding music on acoustic gui-tar and violin. After “I dos”— which Aaron nervously blurted before his cue — Mr. and Mrs. Fox departed by boat as the sun danced across the water. the celebration continued at seven Lakes West Community Center, where the guest count tripled. Good thing there was plenty of cake — four tiers done in yellow buttercream and white meringue flowers to match the summery color scheme. King Curtis, a local West end DJ, kept the dance floor occupied by playing the couple’s favorite songs. Neither could stop smiling. But, aaron and Caroline say, that’s how life is when they’re together.

After celebrating their first anniversary with a romantic dinner and moonlit stroll through downtown Charleston, south Carolina, Mark Oborne and Jenny ragone retreated to the balcony of their room at the french Quarter Inn. that’s where Mark got down on one knee. Guess what Jenny said when Mark asked her to be his bride? You betcha. “there was no second guessing, no doubt,” says Jenny. “I just knew he was the one.” and she’d known from the start. so had Mark. soon after they began dating, Mark says, came a powerful awareness: each moment spent with Jenny was the most important moment of his life. a traditional wedding ceremony was held at the bride’s place of worship, sacred Heart Catholic Church

Fresh flowers — a romantic blend of whites, bright pinks and sage greens — were used for bouquets, boutonnières and nosegays. Bridesmaids wore magenta dresses. the bride kept in scheme with glittery hot pink slingback pumps by Kate Spade — “favorite shoes ever!” Jenny says. a reception was held at the Pinehurst Member’s Club, where light filtered through crystal décor. As alicia made her way down the aisle, the March air swollen with the promise of a new season, rashad Gatling got goose bumps. and when her eyes met his, the groom choked back tears. at that moment, rashad says, he knew he had done something right. He was starting a new life with his best friend. They’d met five years earlier. Alicia was attending UNC Chapel Hill; rashad was taking classes at sand-hills Community College. But distance couldn’t keep them apart. and affections blossomed into something much deeper — a mature love neither had known before. A date was set: March 20, 2010 — the first day of spring. Nearly 200 guests gathered for the ceremony, which
was held on the east Lawn of the spa at Pinehurst. The perfume of flowering trees mingled with the warmth of the afternoon sun. With a keepsake photo of her late father fashioned to her bouquet — an arrangement of ivory and yellow roses, blue hydrangea and blue thistle — Alicia walked down the aisle to an acoustic rendering of stevie Wonder’s “Overjoyed,” a song picked to honor her dad. “He was stevie Wonder’s biggest fan,” alicia says. Once they were pronounced man and wife, festivities commenced in the Carolina Hall. Bride and groom entered the room rapping and snapping their fingers to a Lil’ Jon song. A balloon drop beckoned friends and family to the dance floor. And alicia’s aunt Betty gave guests a taste of Brooklyn — the bride’s hometown — with homemade New York black and white deli cookies, which were blue and yellow instead.

When Matt Cosner met Laura Williams, he says, he felt a divine tug on his heart. “I felt God telling me that she was special and that I should pursue her.” turns out they had a lot in common: New Year’s birthdays, left-handedness, big hearts. and what mat-tered most — a shared faith in the Lord. they decided to marry on New Year’s eve, at the church in eagle springs where Laura grew up. a romantic, candlelit ceremony included original vows, a love song from bride to groom, and Holy Communion. afterward, Matt and Laura dismissed guests row by row and expressed their gratitude. “It was our way of making sure we spoke to every-one who was thoughtful enough to attend,” the bride explains.
festivities proceeded at the fair Barn in Pinehurst, where upward of 300 guests gathered to celebrate with Matt and Laura, and welcome the turning of a new year. There, Laura’s flair for fashion and drama shone through. Her dress, a strapless silk taffeta gown that she pur-chased on tLC’s reality series, “say Yes to the Dress,” was jazzed up with a silver sequined jacket. Curls were pinned up, and a white feather headband created instant Hollywood glamour. Bright red lipstick, she says, was a must. Guests danced to live music from Carolina beach band Chairmen of the Board. and Laura wowed the crowd with her soulful version of “(You Make Me feel Like) a Natural Woman,” which is posted on Youtube. an antique alarm clock topped the three-tiered cake, which rang at midnight.
