When it comes to wed-ding decorations, there’s no one way for military couples to

express themselves. Donna Kim, planner at the Perfect Details in Boston says, “Mili-tary brides go the gamut. Some of them want full-on everything military, and then some of them just want little touches.”

If you’re considering how to reflect you and/or your partner’s military service in your wedding cele-bration, here are some of the main aspects to think about in terms of theme and decor:

Military TraditionsMilitary weddings have a long set of traditions and customs that couples can reference as they wish.

It all starts with uniforms. For grooms, Jackie Watson, principal planner at Enchanted Events in Vermont, says, “The photos that you get with a full military-dressed wedding are beyond spectacular. There is absolutely nothing you can do for a wed-ding that will match what you have just given yourself, because you’re honoring not only what you do in the service, but creating a very, very special moment.”

Grooms have a few options here; they can wear a uniform or traditional tux all day or change out of uniform for the re-ception if they prefer. While military brides can be in uniform too, it’s rare. “I haven’t met a couple yet where a woman wants to wear her uniform on her wedding day,” says Kim.

Watson says that, in her experience, most couples keep the military theme tra-

ditional and understated. You typically see little details, she says: cake-cutting knives, ring boxes or bouquets decorated with military emblems, American flags and mil-itary unit colors behind the receiving line, or a small military emblem sewn into the hem of a wedding dress. “It’s all about not overstating who they are, but keeping it really mellow and just paying homage to what they do.”

Other dramatic military traditions to consider include:

• The arch of sabers or swords. Couples exit the ceremony site under an arch created by military ushers raising their weapons in the air. (The weapons used vary by military branch.)

• Ceremonial cake-cutting. Couples cut their wedding cake using an unsheathed saber or sword.

A nice idea to consider for your civilian guests is to include a card in your pro-gram or at the reception tables explaining the traditions featured.

Beyond TraditionIf you want to play with the military theme a bit more, online browsing will give you lots of ideas. For example, couples could choose a custom cake topper sculpted to look like them; ring cushions, garters, and guest books in army camouflage; or gorgeous stationery featuring military em-blems.

Color is another jumping-off point. You could feature the colors of your military branch in the bridesmaid dresses, floral arrangements, and favors. Or have a patriotic red-white-and-blue wedding with bunting and flags and a cake festooned with blue and red berries.

Finally, Kim says, “Cakes, spe-cifically, seem to be a very strong place where people like to bring in the military aspect.” She ad-vises choosing a bakery whose work you love and that special-izes in the kind of cake you’re envisioning. “If I had a cake per-son that did great flower work

but I was thinking about a very sculpted fondant look with military emblems, it’s probably not the best match.”

Follow Military ProtocolFinally, couples must pay attention to mili-tary protocol. For example, men in mili-tary uniform may not wear boutonnieres. If you have questions—invitation word-ing, flag placement, or where to source a saber—run them by your local base pro-tocol officer and chaplain. Consulting a wedding planner who’s experienced with military weddings is another great option. Says Kim, “I try to give guidance and make sure it’s not disrespectful of the military.”

Crystal represents the US Army and Dave the US Navy. Crystal has since retired from the military and now works as an emergency room nurse. David still serves in the Navy.

How long did it take you to plan? What resources did you use to help plan your wedding? It took six months—almost all of our wedding was planned via email, Skype, and satellite phone. During the planning process, I was deployed to Iraq and my husband was deployed to Japan. We communicated with our florist and the venue’s wedding coordina-tor via email.

How did you meet?My husband and I met while we were in training to become Ex-plosive Ordnance Disposal Technicians in Fort Walton Beach, FL. I was studying for my guided missile exam when a charming Naval Officer approached me to give me some pointers. He was a few weeks ahead of me in school and had already passed this portion of training. We debated the best way to safely disarm the missile—how to approach the missile, what part to remove first, wires to cut, etc. You can’t simply walk up and cut the “black wire” like they do in the movies. Not your typical first-date conversation material, but we were training to become bomb techs (bomb squad) and it was something we were both incredibly passionate about. I completed two combat deployments: one to Iraq in 2010 and one to Afghani-stan in 2011. My husband has now completed four deployments to Afghanistan, Japan, Bahrain, and the Philippines.

Did you include elements of the military in your wedding? As bomb technicians, we frequently use robots to interrogate suspicious devices, remotely disarm bombs, or recover evidence. We both relied on them heavily during our deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. We knew instantly we wanted a bomb disposal robot to be our ring bearer. A member of Dave’s team drove the robot down the aisle during the ceremony from a hidden area of the venue.

We also had the traditional military sword arch—yes, I was smacked on the butt with a sword.

What was the most memorable part of your day?Our ring bearer robot may have stolen the show. When that thing started driving down the aisle, our guests were in complete shock. We, of course, had several bomb techs in the audience, but most of our friends and family had never seen such a thing. I was crossing my fingers it didn’t crash into our guests sitting near the aisle, including my grandmother in the front row.

August 8, 2015Ceremony: Park Street Church

Reception: Courtyard Marriott Boston Downtown

Having the wedding on 8/8/15 was significant for us. The number 8 is lucky in Chinese cul-ture. I also happened to be born in 1988, and we got engaged on 8/8/14 so it was exactly a one-year engagement.

What special moments did you share? We had a wonderful premarital counselor who was also our pastor who officiated the wed-ding for us. His name is Tim Leary and it was amazing how much he could relate to the is-sues we discussed. His wife is half-Asian/half-white (like Drew) and he also had a brother in the Air Force, so he could understand some of the challenges associated with being in the military and being a military spouse. He also lived in China for a few years, so he under-stood a lot of the cultural differences between us.

Before Drew and I headed over to the cer-emony, we had a private gift exchange and prayer. We were separated by a column so we couldn’t see each other. Drew surprised me with a heart necklace from Tiffany’s to replace the old Zales necklace he gave me when we first started dating. And I gave him a passport cover with a gift card for a Disney cruise inside.

June 27, 2015The Quonset “O” Club North Kingstown, RI

Michael is in the 143rd Infantry Regiment of the 36th infantry division.

How did you meet?I met Michael at a New Year’s Eve party in 2011. We talked a little throughout the night. Little did I know, he would be leaving RI to deploy the very next day. A couple weeks later, I found Michael on Facebook, and we started to talk and reveal our interest in one another to each other. We then spent the next 11 months talking as much as possible, through Facebook, and skype, limited phones calls, and love letters sent through the mail back and forth. When he came home, we instantly felt like home was in one another’s arms. It wasn’t awkward at all. We spent almost every day together. A year later, we found out we were expecting a baby and we were very excited! Then on New Year’s eve, he proposed to me in Newport RI, on the cliff walk, during the sunrise over the ocean. Of course I said yes!

What resources did you use to help plan your wedding? We had actually won a wedding contest from a local radio station. We didn’t take the whole wedding package but we did use Carina e Dolce for the cake, photographer Erick Brown, the Paper Perfectionist for wedding invitations, and the flowers from Cherry Hill Florist.

Greg is a LT pilot in the Coast Guard.

Did you include elements of the military in your wedding? Yes! Greg was wearing his dress whites, as were the other military men in the wedding. We also had a sword arch that we walked through that was performed after the ceremony. Our guest book was an airplane propeller that the guests signed. The cake was cut with his military sword.

What were your favorite design elements?I think what stands out as a design element in our wedding was the thoughtful combination of the military and nautical themes. The men dressed in their whites and the breathtaking backdrop is illus-trated beautifully in the photographs. The location for our ceremony and reception was just spectacular. We did not have to do much of ANYTHING to make it special or fall into our design; our design WAS the Chatham Bars Inn.

March 7, 2015OceanCliff Hotel in Newport, RI

Rex is a 2011 graduate of the United States Naval Academy; he is currently an ensign in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps while we attend medical school, and will resume active duty as a Navy lieutenant at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in June 2016.

How did you meet?We met at our medical school interview in ear-ly 2011 and connected right away. After the interview, our flights were really delayed, so we spent hours talking in the airport. We both got into medical school a few months later, and the rest is history!

Did you include elements of the military in your wedding? We had a sword arch following the ceremony, complete with a (light) swat and proclamation of “Welcome to the Navy!” after we passed the final sword bearers. We also used the sword Rex received when he graduated from USNA to cut the cake during the reception.

What were your favorite design elements? We decorated each table with custom cross-word puzzles about Rex and me. We also did a different twist on the guest book by having guests sign recycled sailcloth, which was then made into a tote bag by the amazing folks at Sea Bags. So, we now have a custom bag that has the signatures of all our friends and family on the inside lining! Finally, one of my favorite elements was the fact that I got to wear the same earrings that my mother wore when she married my father.

Did you include elements of the military in your wedding? There was an Arch of Swords Ceremony during the wedding. After our being introduced for the first time as husband and wife, we walked through the Sword Detail who held their swords up, forming an arch, for us to walk under. The couple gets stopped before going under each arch, “requiring a kiss to pass”. We used Ben’s Marine Officer Sword for the Cake Cutting Ceremony. I sewed one of Ben’s old uniform name tags onto the inside of my gown, representing something old, something borrowed, and something new (new last name). I also glued a silver sixpence to my royal blue shoes to keep the last two traditions (“something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a sixpence in her shoe”).

What was the most memorable part of your day?Getting ready with my mother before the wedding. She was, and still is, bravely battling cancer. Having my mother and grandmother by my side for such a sig-nificant day meant the world to me. Besides the arch of swords and cake cutting , another memorable moment for us both was our “bubble send off”. It was a great last moment to the celebration, surrounded by friends, family, and bubbles.

Seven Ways Military Couples Can Reduce the Cost of Saying “I Do”

military Weddings for less

by Connie Jeske Crane

When it comes to planning their big day, military couples tend to have tight budgets.

They may also be lacking in other resources such as time or family nearby to help.

How to cope? “I’m going to be very honest and say weddings are not inexpensive,”

says Jackie Watson, principal planner with Vermont-based Enchanted Events.

She estimates that an average wedding for 100 to 150 people in her state costs around

$35,000. While acknowledging the unique challenges, Watson and other wedding

professionals say military couples also have some special places to seek support and

reap some savings. Here’s a rundown:

Page 37: Bride & Groom Spring 2016

www.bridegroommag.com 37

Military DiscountsMany wedding suppliers—from cruise lines to airlines to DJs—of-fer military discounts. See the sidebar for details on how to take advantage of what’s available.

Don’t Be Afraid to AskMany suppliers don’t advertise military discounts, but that doesn’t mean they won’t give you one. Donna Kim, a planner with the Perfect Details in Concord, MA, says her number-one rule is always ask. “More than likely there are vendors that will be willing to give a discount for military couples. But to succeed here, you must go beyond online searching and have old-fash-ioned face-to-face conversations,” says Kim.

Utilize the Military CommunityKim tells military couples, “Always look to your local military base. People understand your financial situation or that you don’t have family nearby. The military community is so strong and so helpful and there are so many resources.”

For example, venues like chapels are available for free, al-though you may want to make a small donation. Other exam-ples are military leisure travel offices and base thrift shops. Kim says, “I often go through there and think, ‘Boy, if I was a military bride and didn’t have a lot of money, I would go through this thrift shop, and I could find things and create a really beautiful wedding.’”

DIYAnother cost-saving strategy is creating your own elements such as invitations or favors. “Pinterest is your greatest friend. It’s a great place to start for ideas,” says Kim. If you’re feeling tenta-tive, she suggests hiring a planner for a consultation on adding elegant DIY touches.

Enter ContestsMilitary members can sometimes find amazing contest give-aways for bridal gowns—or even entire weddings. A few years ago, Watson founded Salute to Our Soldiers, a wedding give-away package based on donations from a set of Vermont ven-dors. She also recommends Brides Across America for gowns. “They work so well with couples getting married and help so many brides, it’s insane.”

Traditional StrategiesWatson says military couples can also save in more traditional ways. “Can you scale back on your guest count? That’s going to rapidly reduce what you’re spending.” She also suggests serving fewer appetizers and/or doing a plated versus buffet dinner. “Buffets are actually more expensive because of food waste.”

Consider Wedding InsuranceFinally, given uncertain military schedules, Kim recommends wedding insurance. “It’s not something I recommend to every couple, but for a military couple or people getting married in the winter, I always advise on wedding insurance because if some-thing unexpected happens, you’re protected. You could move the date without losing everything.”

The Tan CommandmenTs

of Wedding day

Brides who want to look bronzed and beautiful on their wedding day have to be careful. Most self-tanners smell awful, look fake,

turn orange, and are bound to rub off on your wedding dress. Who needs that misery?

Page 39: Bride & Groom Spring 2016

But now there’s a solution from an Irish entrepreneur who founded a company to solve that problem—even if you’re as white as Wonder Bread. It’s called Vita Liberata, (www.VitaLiberata.com) and celebrities like Gwyneth and Sofia are huge fans, especially when they’re walking the red carpet. Now you too can walk down the aisle looking like an A-lister!

Alyson Hogg established Vita Liberata in 2003, and as CEO, she remains the driving force behind its success. In the course of developing her self-tanning brand, Ms. Hogg has become one of the most authoritative voices in the industry, taking an en-tirely new approach to move away from negative connotations around self-tanning, towards natural, odorless, pure formulations that guarantee flawless results.

“I am passionate about creating real alternatives to sun expo-sure,” she says. “We use the smartest technology and the purest ingredients to deliver the most natural results.”

And indeed they do. Here are some of the things that set Vita Liberata self-tanners apart:

Organic Anti-Aging Ingredients. All the products are burst-ing with certified organic extracts that are kind to skin, offering anti-aging benefits and conditioning. This enhances the natural-looking tan results because these ingredients make the skin smooth, even and plump—the perfect base for tanning.

Quick & Easy Application. Due to the unique formulation, Vita Liberata tan solution dries on contact so brides can actually dress with confidence after just five minutes.

No Smell! Thanks to Odour Remove™ technology, in an inde-pendent survey of 200 participants, 99% said Vita Liberata had no smell on the skin.

Perfect Fade. The nontoxic and organic nature of Vita Libera-ta products combined with a unique moisture-locking system means all Vita Liberata tans dry instantly and fade perfectly—no snakeskin, patching, or streaking— just a gentle fade to nothing, like a natural tan.

Nontoxic. All toxic ingredients have been eliminated.Vita Liberata offers three formulations well worth trying:I’m in love with Trystal Minerals, self-tanning bronzing min-

erals that you apply to your face with a kabuki brush, for in-stant colorful results. Easy to apply, this innovative formula is the world’s first self-tanning bronzer. Trystal3™ technology combines an instant pure mineral bronze color for a beautiful, natural-looking medium tan that lasts for days. Oil-free with micronized crystals for sheer, lightweight bronzing coverage and added DHA for a lasting result, this bronzing powder offers the look and feel of soft, smooth, healthy looking skin. This product is also a Cosmopolitan Magazine Beauty Award winner.

Another great option is the pHenom-enal Tan Mousse. It’s a joy to apply! Us-ing a mitt, simply swirl it on to obtain in-stant, natural-looking results. It contains a moisture-locking system for 72-hour skin hydration; cucumber for anti-inflammato-ry benefits and calm skin; tocopheryl ac-etate, which protects against free radical damage and signs of aging; and ginkgo biloba, which improves blood flow and has been linked to cellulite reduction.

The Gradual Tan Ultra is a hydrating untinted tan lotion that goes on clear like a body lotion for zero transfer onto clothes, and develops lasting color in four to eight hours. Its certified organic extracts also nourish and condition your skin. It develops a subtle sun-kissed glow that can be deepened with regular use and is moisturizing enough to replace your regu-lar body lotion. It can also be used as a color booster in the days following a self-tan or spray-tan application.

Now you’re ready to smile for the camera!

Inviting or Not Inviting the Kids

42 Spring 2016 BRIDE&GROOM

To invite or not invite kids to your wedding. That is the question

posed by wedding and event planner Tanya Costigan. The answer

is often, “a huge struggle for couples, especially if close family

members have kids. It may feel impolite or rude to tell guests

they can’t bring their children.”

by Cindy Papish Gerber

Page 43: Bride & Groom Spring 2016

www.bridegroommag.com 43

Some brides and grooms believe children add spontaneity and joy to weddings. Others think little ones have no place at a painstakingly planned, pricey celebration. Before this emotionally charged issue leads to hurt feelings or major disputes, “Couples struggling with this decision,” states etiquette expert Jodi R. R. Smith, aka Mannersmith, “really need to think. When someone raises the subject, ask questions to find out why having children there is important to them.”

Taking into account your budget, style, and venue, Smith rec-ommends a thorough review of your guest list. “Create the list of children who ‘may’ be considered, along with their ages and relationship to the bride and groom. If there are only two in-fants recently born to distant cousins or tweens of your parents’ neighbors, you might opt out of inviting children. If they’re the couple’s nieces and nephews, then children may be included.”

Corey Schwartz and Carolyn Siegel are following the “nieces, nephews, and first cousins” guideline for their October 9 wed-ding at the Hildene Lincoln Family Home in Manchester, VT. “I have two nieces and Corey’s mom is one of five with quite a few young cousins,” explains Carolyn. With “about ten children, ages ranging from just under one year to nine, not counting teenagers,” they plan to hire babysitters, set up a kids’ table with kid-friendly food, arrange a scavenger hunt, and more.

Incorporating a separate kids’ section is a win-win for every-one. Alternatively, “Babysitters can sit at the kids table in the reception space,” suggests Costigan. “If you have older nieces or nephews willing to manage the little ones, that’s a great option.”

If you’re planning to include a flower girl and ring bearer in your processional, it’s best to communicate this early on to other parents. The same rule applies for inviting children only to the ceremony, but not the reception. “Make it very clear how that is going to happen,” Smith advises, “by extending a verbal cer-emony invitation to the children’s caregivers or family babysitter so that there is someone there to whisk away the children after the ceremony. Or choose to include, “the kids for the cocktail hour and first hour of the reception, then have them leave be-fore they melt-down.”

The clearest way to send your message is by using care-ful wording in your invitation. “Only those invited to the event

should be listed on the envelope,” Smith maintains. “So an invitation addressed to ‘The Jones Family’ is for everyone, where-as ‘Mr. & Mrs. Adam Jones’ is an adults-only event.”

Despite all efforts, some guests may misread or disregard the invitation’s wording. “They may think,” adds Costi-gan, “if they are invited, that it automati-cally means their kids are as well.” Here’s where creating a clever, eye-catching in-sert card comes in handy, that includes polite yet clear wording (e.g., “While we absolutely love the little ones, we are looking forward to celebrating as adults on this exciting day!”).

After receiving each RSVP, do a thor-ough review. “If someone [mistakenly] in-cludes a child” says Smith,” an immediate call must be placed. You could say some-thing like, “Suzie, we are so thrilled you and Adam are able to come. We don’t have any babysitters for the event, but if you’re planning on bringing Bobbie, I can ask around to find someone to babysit him at the hotel.”

Your final kids/no kids decision may seem ironclad. Honesty and firmness has its place, but when it comes to friends and relatives, Smith endorses sensitivity and compromise. “This is all about rela-tionships and open communication. Con-

sider a consolation, such as inviting the whole family to the rehearsal dinner or to the going away brunch.”

“Try to think 10, 20, 50 years down the line” she concludes. “Adult-only re-ceptions are beautiful, yet there are times when having children present helps cre-ate the continuity from generation to generation. Weddings are the joining of families; they are real life, and occasion-ally having children part of the happening makes it all worthwhile.”

What’s Blooming

Expect the Unexpected.“More and more brides are being

adventurous in their choice of blooms.”

From using large accent flowers with interesting shapes and texture, to veering away from the expected and traditional color palette of white and blush and go-ing with more dramatic colors, to departing from the round bouquet to a more natural and organic shape,” says Tracey Reynolds of Tracey Reynolds Floral Design. “Many of the ideas brides are coming to me with are a continuation of what I saw in the past year, but with some new, exciting con-cepts that are starting to gain in popularity such as the seasonal array, with a foraged, wild and woodsy feel that doesn’t follow the tighter, more compact ‘roundy-moun-dy’ looking bouquet in past years. The ‘freshly gathered’ style bouquet is in, and compact and tight ball bouquets are be-coming passé and a trend of the past,” says Nicole Pelechowicz, freelance designer of NP Floral Design.

Pelechowicz sees lots of different and unique greenery gaining popularity for bouquets, as well as succulents. “The really neat thing about choosing to have your designer add succulents to your bridal bouquet is that the plant can then be removed and grown on its own as a lovely memory of the special day. And they are so easy to grow and can last for years,” notes Pelechowicz.

“Usually the bridesmaids will have a few blooms in their bou-quet that mirror the bride’s, but their bouquet is created on a simpler scale with less florals and less texture, leaving the focus to the design of the bridal bouquet. The centerpieces will also have the same mix of florals, but are not created to be matchy, matchy to the bridal bouquet. It is important that there is connection and flow through the event, and the florals are a great way to do that, but everything doesn’t have to look exactly the same and have the exact same mix for that to be accomplished,” says Reynolds.

“Typically, most brides tend to choose a bloom they carry to also serve as the grooms boutonnière. Grooms are actually having more say in bouton-nière choices too! They’ve been liking the more unique choices like small succulents paired with berries or crespedia or even just mixed greenery,” says Pelechowicz.

military Couple Celebrates 20 Years of marriageby Diana Whelan

Rusty and Kate Corriveau will celebrate their twentieth wedding anniversary on June 29, 2016. While they’ll be rejoicing at their home in Brimfield, Massachusetts, they haven’t always called this town and state home. From Georgia to the California desert, the Corriveaus moved across the United States quite often as a result of Rusty’s career as a master sergeant in logistics in the Marine Corps. So what has it been like for Kate as a military spouse? B&G sat down with her to get the scoop.

B&G

Twenty years of marriage is quite the accomplishment! How does it feel to be approaching this point?

It’s crazy! Time has gone by so quickly. We have three daughters—ages 10, 13, and 15—and they’ve been keep-ing us busy for sure. So when we talk about where we’ve lived and what we’ve accomplished, we’re like, “Wow, we’ve been together for a long time!” On the other hand, I feel as though we’ve only just passed the half-mile marker of this journey. There’s still much transi-tion ahead—from full nest to empty and retirement.

Just for a little background, when and where did you two meet?

We actually met at our ten-year class reunion in Sturbridge! Rusty had already been in the Marine Corps about nine years and had been to many places—from Japan to Louisiana. After we recon-nected, we went to dinner and I thought, “Wow, he’s really nice!” We were dating about a year before he proposed. At the time, we were living in Georgia, planning a wedding in Sturbridge, so it was tough, but we made it work.

What difficulties or hardships have you endured as a military spouse?

Being a military wife is not your average wife. You have to know that your husband can go off to any war at any time and be able to accept that anything goes. The toughest point was when we had our first baby while we were out in Yucca Valley, California. Rusty got orders to go Guantanamo Bay, and I was left alone with a newborn. But I made the best of it, videoing everything and sending him all the tapes.

What have you learned about your-self and your relationship throughout the process of deployment/your husband be-ing a marine? Do you think your relation-ship became stronger because of it?

I do think that because of the fre-quent changes, our partnership grew over the years. We were both forced to acclimate to new places and make the best of every situation. And the thing is, we did. We didn’t whine about it. Sure, I was sad—you have to leave your friends and job—but it’s my duty to support him, wherever he’s sent. For the most part, our journey was lucky, but that has a lot to

do with the attitude we took. As long as Rusty wasn’t going to a war zone, things were great. There’s always that anxiety, but the Marine Corps is the commitment he, and by marrying him, I, took.

What piece of advice would you give other military spouses who are just starting out?

Don’t make them feel bad about it! You have to remember that you’re a team, and being supportive gives your spouse the positive energy [he or she needs] to fight for the country. I didn’t look at it as just his job—I signed up for it, too. So embrace it. Also, make an effort to meet people if you’re relocating a lot. Seek out volunteer opportunities, or if you have children, find a park with more children. And try to always find the bright side. For example, one of the greatest hardships is leaving the people you love, but the greater gain is I never would’ve met them otherwise.

What’s life like now?

Rusty’s been retired from the marines for 10 years and is now the owner and property manager of various properties as well as the primary caregiver for the girls. I’m national account manager at Kedrion Biopharma, Inc., where I’m fortunate to call home my office. We’re currently reno-vating our house and are excited for this next chapter!

Top Chefs Dish on What’s Trending in Wedding Menus

by Stacey Marcus

Congratulations! You have discovered the person you want to share your life with. Now that the most important decision is made, the fun can begin. Along with the joy that comes with planning a wedding, there are endless

decisions to be made. We know you have a lot on your plate so we thought we’d make it easy for you to learn about what’s new on wedding menus.

Here’s what some top chefs see trending at receptions.

Fresh, Seasonal and Locally Sourced“Nearly all wedding couples desire a per-sonalized menu that tells their story – as individuals, and as a couple...but most importantly, a menu that features fresh, seasonal, and ideally locally-grown foods. Wolfgang Puck Catering at the Museum of Science in Boston showcases this philos-ophy by featuring the best of what New England has to offer for culinarians: Lo-cally sourced cheeses, New England Fam-ily Farms beef and New England grown produce,” Wolfgang Puck Catering Execu-tive Chef Daniel Dumont who is based at the Museum of Science, Boston.

Food to OrderThe Palm Boston has becoming an in-creasingly popular wedding venue loca-tion, with an incredible downtown Boston location, luxurious open dining room, ex-pansive outdoor patio, and customizable menus that are sure to blow guests (and the happy couple) away. Executive Chef Karen Mitchell has noticed that couples have become increasingly aware of their guests needs, from dietary restrictions to allergies, and preference in meat tem-peratures. In order to give guests a true Palm Boston experience, Mitchell and her

team now cook each steak to order – so whether guests prefer their filet cooked medium rare or well done, everyone gets their cut exactly how you enjoy it the most. The Palm motto is to treat every guest like family, make sure everyone has the best experience possible.

Cheers to Wine and Healthy Eating“Many weddings at Vanderbilt Grace are moving away from traditional sit down dinners,” says Jacob Ennis, Executive Chef at Vanderbilt Grace: “For example, we re-cently hosted a five course wine tasting

wedding where we paired wines with all of the courses and had servers present and talk a bit about the wines, as if you went to a small wine tasting,” notes Ennis.

He notes that everyone is looking for local and sustainable food. “It is growing to be such an integral part of our eating cul-ture that our guests want to be able to share with their guests the farms or back story to their menus, with farms being listed on the menu like a “guest of honor” might be listed on the program,” says Ennis.

He also observes that guests are making healthier choices more prevalent on their menus. “With Ancient Grains such as freekah, quinoa and rye berries becoming more than just side dishes. We’ve moved away from the classical rich, butter and cream filled sauces to lighter options, says Chef Ennis.

Delicious Duet“With the Atlantic Ocean taking center stage at our magnificent waterfront venue, and the view of lobster boats drifting by with their daily catch, one of the most popular choices is a duet of butter poached beef tenderloin with locally caught Chatham lobster,“ says Chatham Bars Inn Chef Anthony Cole.

Mastering Flexibility“The International has seen many wedding trends come and go over the decades and our experience has demonstrated one thing very clearly- Wedding menus have evolved from

“chicken or fish” choices, made with a simple checkmark on a return card to fully customized menus based on family tradi-tion, cultural diversity, and environmental concerns,” says Executive Chef William Nemeroff.

Chef Nemeroff points to brides mak-ing suggestions for everything from grass fed beef from a friends family farm in New Braintree to heirloom tomatoes and herbs from a family members garden. “The wed-ding menu has evolved into a sort of culi-nary heart play, something that represents the people getting married and their love of food and how that food relates to their family.”

Couples are fortunate to have end-less options to customize their wedding menus giving guests a taste of the flavors they savor. Bon apetit!

The First EncounterAnya and Alexander’s story starts off like

many modern-day love stories—at a dimly lit bar. This particular establishment is not ex-actly known for its atmosphere nor its sophis-tication. Nevertheless, their newly adopted graduate school decided it was the perfect lo-cation for a mixer with another nearby school. As their eyes locked across the crowded dance floor, they instantly felt that “Uh-oh, I’m in trouble” moment; the rest is history.

Page 65: Bride & Groom Spring 2016

www.bridegroommag.com 65

Fast forward four years to the evening of January 25, 2014. Alexander is down on one knee in the middle of a frozen-over pond at the Boston Public Garden. His hands tremble as his soon to be fian-cé turns around to find him on one knee. He struggles to get out the words “I love you. Will you marry me?” Anya excitedly shakes her head and says yes! In the rush of the moment, Alexander puts the ring on the wrong hand, but eventually gets it right. A crowd gathers around the embrac-ing couple, and with the snowy scenery, the moment could not feel more like a scene from a movie.

Anya and Alexander were engaged for 18 months before their special day. The couple took their time to plan their dream day, and guests can attest to how pic-turesque and soulful their wedding was. Friends and family gathered from near and far—from Russia to Minnesota, Brazil, Mexico, England, and the Czech Republic.

Their wedding was at the Crane Es-tate in Ipswich, MA. The backdrop of the rolling hills and ocean against the grand mansion made for a very picturesque sight. As the ceremony began, the clouds broke apart and the sun shone down on their guests creating a beautiful backdrop. The ceremony was particularly special to Anya and Alexander as they united family and culture by reciting their own vows

in Russian, a language in which they are both fluent. The Russian-American duo acknowledged their culture through their vows, family speeches, and Russian traditions such as the presenting of the bread and salt. This tradition is carried out by the bride’s parents and represents their wishes for prosperity and happiness to the young family. Bringing all of these friends and family together and showcas-ing their culture on their big day made an unforgettable day even more memorable for Anya and Alexander.

The Crane Estate was perfect for the couple’s desire for a chic wedding with classic style. Guests were amazed by

the views and elegance of the mansion, reminiscent of the parties featured in The Great Gatsby. Vibrant shades of purple filled their tablescapes with breathtaking orchid floral arrangements. The wedding exuded elegance. Guests enjoyed a mix-ture of the couple’s favorite foods. Cock-tail hour featured a delicious New Eng-land raw bar and also Russian delicacies, such as blinis with caviar and gravlax. A 10-piece live band had the crowd dancing all night to a mix of tunes ranging from Sinatra to Journey, which made for quite the fun-filled evening.

Their StoryRebecca and Robert originally met back in their high

school days at West Boylston High. They were in different grades so they didn’t get much chance to socialize, but they reconnected years later while they both were working at UMass Hospital. Rebecca worked in the ER and Rob was an EMT. Once they reconnected, they knew it was fate; they fell in love and everything else fell into place.

Robert’s proposal was intended to take place during a trip to the park, but his nerves got the best of him, and he even-tually proposed later that day in the com-fort of their own home.

After a year of planning, Rebecca and Robert settled on getting married at Wyman Pond in Westminster, MA, at the home of Rebecca’s parents. With the view of Wachusett Mountain in the back-ground, the two couldn’t bear to pass up such a gorgeous location. The wedding was rustic, inspired by elements from their ceremony and reception location. An outdoor tent was set up on the lawn, succulents were used for the bouquets and other floral arrangements, and guests were given decorated terracotta potted succulent plants as favors. A very cute idea for a wedding inspired by nature! A family friend even made a custom birch-wood arbor for the ceremony that was dressed in ferns and succulents. Bamboo dinnerware lined the tables and paper lotus floating candles drifted along in the pond at night.

Despite the downpours they had be-fore the ceremony, the scenery was breathtaking.

For the ceremony, the couple took part in a beautiful and unique handfast-ing ceremony. This is a European tradi-tion that dates back to ancient times. The custom includes the binding of the bride and groom’s hands with a ribbon, signifying that they have accepted each other as husband and wife. The wedding was definitely a family affair. The bride’s uncle, Thomas Harvey, flew in from Texas and officiated at the wedding; Rebecca’s brother’s band, Prying Eyes, played live music; and her bridesmaid, Sharon Foster (owner of Queen of Confections), made their beautiful wedding cake.

Rebecca and Robert suggest that if you’re planning a home wedding, orga-nize the reception really well. Time man-agement was key for the couple during the planning process and allowed them to sit back and enjoy their day.

Accommodating Your GuestsIf you’ve already selected the exact time, date, and place to get married, you need to start planning how to accommodate your guests. After all, many of them will be travel-ing by plane, train, and automobile just to attend your wedding.

“Setting up room blocks for out-of-town guests has become a standard practice,” says Martine Boursiquot-LaConte, a certified wedding planner with This Modern Love Events, LLC. Depending on your head count, you can select several hotels with varying price points. The further ahead you book, the better chance you will have of securing the best deals. Boursiquot-LaConte recommends “checking in every few weeks with the reservation manager to ensure that you have enough rooms in your block.”

This matters most if your date coincides with high season, holidays, graduations, fes-tivals, or an area convention. Corey Schwartz and Carolyn Siegal’s wedding is planned for Columbus Day weekend in VT.

SageStudios.com

Page 75: Bride & Groom Spring 2016

www.bridegroommag.com 75

Since this is also peak foliage time, “We were warned”, said Caro-lyn, “hotels would book up very quickly. Early on, we made sure to arrange blocks at seven hotels and inns to accommodate everyone’s budget and schedule.” One big issue they ran into was the three-night minimum that most hotels require for this popular weekend. “We had to do research,” she recalls, in order to find places that would accept fewer night stays. Corey points out, “Due to the lack of large ‘name brand’ area hotels, renting houses would be the most economical option. We made sure to reach out to groups of friends with details on convenient houses available for rent.”

Grace Gugliotti co-owns The Harding Allen Estate with her husband Carmine. She suggests couples, “pursue booking 18 months prior to their event—particularly as we host only one wedding at a time, and dates are snapped up quickly.” Gug-liotti describes this picturesque, vintage neo-classical mansion and banquet facility, which was recently featured in the Lifetime movie The Spirit of Christmas, as a combination “vivid back-drop” plus convenient “one-stop-shop”—complete with “onsite catering, bakery, florist, rental center, and accommodations.” Wedding couples also receive a bedroom assignment sheet that depicts room layout and pricing for the estate rooms and two on-location cottages. “Our goal is to combine easy plan-ning, fair value, and elegant beauty to create an unforgettable wedding day.”

The staff at The Chocksett Inn in Sterling, MA, is dedicated to handling “every aspect of your wedding . . . from the rehearsal dinner to the sendoff breakfast, and everything in between,” says Wedding Coordinator Alicia Clayton. With a private outdoor

garden, tented deck, ballroom, and newly renovated restau-rant, the quaint inn “has twenty-seven guest rooms, including two luxurious bridal suites. Most of our standard guest rooms include a king size bed, queen size pull-out couch, and kitch-enette.” Discounted room blocks are placed the day you book your wedding. “In the event that the wedding books the entire inn, we offer shuttle service to our sister property, The Colonial Hotel in Gardner, MA.”

The Publick House Historic Inn, in Sturbridge, MA, is a true destination wedding site. Currently offering 11 private banquet rooms and outdoor garden facilities, “We do seven to nine weddings holiday weekends, five or six on regular weekends and some weekdays,” says Rooms Division Manager Michelle Rondeau. “The property has 101 rooms, offering three different accommodations: The Historic Publick House has 17 rooms,

with three suites we use as bridal suites. The Chamberlain House has 12 Suites and eight standard rooms, and the Country Lodge (featuring a swimming pool in summer months) offers 64 motel-style rooms with two queen size or one king size bed.” Overnight guests enjoy complimentary coffee, tea, and baked goods from the bake shop, receive room and dining discounts, and have easy access to local attractions. Rondeau reminds couples to let guests know about special events. “We have antique shows three times a year in Brimfield and Harvest Festival Weekend (the third weekend in October), events that make rooms high in demand.”

Use your wedding website to update everyone about all travel and itinerary details. “Another really nice gesture,” says Boursiquot-LaConte is “to provide out–of–towners with welcome bags.” For a smooth experience, she suggests that couples “limit the number of pick-up and drop off locations, keep things simple, and keep guests informed!”

T he name Grand View says it all. This all-inclusive destination venue does indeed

have a “grand view” from every direction, but beyond the amazing vistas of

pristine Lake Nipmuc, the word “grand” can be used to describe every aspect

of this brand-new, experience-based luxury wedding and event estate, privately

nestled on 15 acres in the little town of Mendon, Massachusetts.

The original facility was built on this site close to 100 years ago, but in 2013, it was purchased by Kevin P. Meehan owner of the Imperial family of car dealerships, also located in Mendon. The project is Mee-han’s brainchild—he gave it its new name and launched an over $5 million renova-tion project.

“Mr. Meehan is all about excellence and facilitating memorable experiences in whatever he does,” said Sharon Santucci,

manager and event specialist at Grand View. Exceeding expectations is Mr. Mee-han’s top priority. “He’s a man with a vi-sion, so it was only natural that he saw what a jewel the Grand View property could be. Since his acquisition, he has worked tirelessly to create a magnificent destination spot, providing a wedding experience like no other, conveniently lo-cated right here in Central Massachusetts. and the expansive landscaped grounds has his touches all over it and it is truly amazing”.

Endless pampering, lavish indulgences, and unmatched customer care are what brides and grooms expect at Grand View. What does an all-inclusive wedding destination actu-ally mean? Grand View defines it as “your every decadent wish is our command.” From start to finish—ceremony to re-ception—hospitality is the guiding principle, as couples spend extensive time in advance of the big day developing their one-of-a-kind wedding experience. Seasoned event spe-cialists are there to guide them through each step of the process and will anticipate and take care of every detail. Couples

choose from four all-inclusive packages—from gourmet foods and specialty beverage selections, to hair and makeup stylists, to entertainment, to floral designers and party favors galore. A champagne Bubbly Bar, ice carvings, an international espresso station, and hand-rolled cigars by the outdoor fire pits are just a few highlights here, along with whatever else two people in love, together with their families, can envision and make their reality. Grand View works with only five-star top-rated vendors, allowing couples to rest easy knowing they are in the hands of experienced professionals who will ensure a customized one-of-a-kind event.

The perfect partner to Grand View’s exemplary services is its

impeccable scenery. Undeniably, the elegant water-front vista is the central feature at Grand View, only to be matched by its impressive ballroom. Clients will notice that much attention was spent on the ballroom’s interior design, punctuated by opulent crystal chandeliers, gleaming hardwood floors, and four seasons of panoramic views seen through windows that stretch from floor to ceiling. When it comes to lighting and technology enhancements this facility is decked out with all the latest trends. Outside of the venue, the landscape is simply spec-tacular with its extensive stone patios leading out to the three gorgeous ceremony sites and a breathtak-ing waterfront view.

Grand View offers three distinct ceremony sites: (1) The Chapel at Grand View offers a majestic Tuscan-feel, featuring elegant cathedral-style col-umns reaching up to the open sky with suspended stained-glass panels, and endless views of the spar-kling lake. Guests will be entranced with the old-world statuary, stone waterfall, and fountains that surround the Chapel. (2) Bella Vista at Grand View

This option offers brides and grooms the same sweeping views of the grounds, flanked by a three-tiered stonework water fountain. Of course, the pris-tine lake and the picturesque sky is the ever-present backdrop for Bella Vista. (3) Lastly, the Rose Garden at Grand View is situated around an open-air pergola, offering scenic lake overlooks, surrounded by sweep-ing green lawns and lush Knock Out Roses. It’s a floral oasis for guests to enjoy.

No matter your choice, lovely photo opportunities abound at Grand View as the lush manicured gardens and landscape, unique water features and hardscaped areas were all planned with photography in mind.

To complete the destination feel and extend the party, the Chalet at Grand View is offered as an addi-tional option. This fully renovated, four-bedroom, two-bath, contemporary lake-inspired home is situated on the property and available to brides, grooms, and their special guests.

is situated on an extensive stone patio an-chored by an arched stone seating area. It comfortably accommodates up to 20 of your favorite overnight guests and fea-tures a loft with a spiral staircase and a full state-of-the art modern kitchen. Out-door amenities include a sprawling wrap-around deck with a large stone fire pit and canoe launch just steps away from the lake.

Grand View is a treat for the senses that requires an on-site tour for one to truly grasp the overall feel of its sophistica-tion. More than a venue, it’s a destina-tion where lifelong memories are made.

“We’ve been hosting tented weddings on the grounds for at least six years, but dealing with the size limitations of a tent, and being in New England, we were natu-rally restricted with what we could offer and when we could offer it,” said Janet Waterman, executive director of events. “With that in mind, we designed and opened our new indoor wedding facility to rave reviews in May of 2015, and we have been hosting events EVERY week-end since!”

Imagine the romance of a 13,000 square foot, nineteenth-century mansion, situated on 92 acres, meticulously mani-cured year-round by three full-time land-scapers. Now imagine a seamless addition to that space, designed to accommodate the upscale and modern needs of today’s brides and grooms, with the custom de-tails necessary to maintain the charm and allure of the original building—that’s the beauty of the Mansion at Bald Hill!

The property itself has been standing for over a century, and eight years ago, chefs Joel Therique and Scott Plaintier opened the restaurant on-site, bringing their pas-sion for fine dining and customer service to the table; in fact, it is the centerpiece of what they offer. By doing so in this amaz-ing space, they have brought energy back to an age-old summer home, breathing new life into it again. In adding weddings to their repertoire, they are now present-ing a top-notch experience where couples can begin their lives together.

Although the Mansion hosts up to 270 people for cocktails, there are no mini-mums. In fact, on the day I first spoke to Janet Waterman, she had just finished working with a couple who had eloped

and were getting married in front of one of the 14 antique fireplaces inside the Mansion. It was the couple, a photogra-pher, and a Justice of the Peace, creating an intimate and lovely beginning together. They honeymooned that night at the Bed & Breakfast (an added convenience and feature available to brides and grooms, plus a few guests, too). Talk about full ser-vice; Waterman says 99% of all of the couples who have their weddings at the Mansion at Bald Hill actually have the ceremo-ny there as well. Following the renovation, they now have the space to accommodate it all. There are a variety of spaces on the grounds or on-site to have the ceremony, whether it’s in front of a fireplace or in a breathtaking garden (there’s always

something blooming starting in the spring through October), or in a special room (created as part of the addition) and they still do tents, too. Other features include a hardscaped patio with a fire pit surrounded by Adirondack chairs and a patio with a wa-terfall and a three-tiered water feature to set the mood. There’s also a two-sided propane fireplace—one side is outdoors and the other is in a room that holds 60 people comfortably with rich leather furniture and traditional decor, making it a perfect spot for cocktail hour or even a rehearsal dinner. Everything is very well-thought-out and managed beautifully.

When it comes to the food, the Mansion features an eclectic seasonal menu prepared with great care and presented with an

artistic flair. They accommodate aller-gies and offer vegetarian and gluten-free meals as well. But most importantly, cou-ples can build their meal experience as they wish; individualization is key.

Brides and grooms meet with Janet Waterman as they design their perfect day

from start to finish. She is there through-out the entire process—from planning, to coordinating, to implementing and be-yond. “Convenience and Personalization” is her motto. She makes vendor referrals based on her longtime experience work-ing with brides and grooms, and she wants

couples to feel like they can get what they want at the Mansion at Bald Hill; even if it’s something not readily available, she helps make it happen That’s a real asset on such an important day.

Each wedding is truly unique like each couple. The Mansion at Bald Hill is dedicated to the individual needs of the brides and grooms they serve, making their experiences truly exceptional and as memorable as the Mansion itself! Be sure to check them out on Facebook or give them a call for more information.

Historic Honeymoons

by Janet Strassman Perlmutter

New England honeymoon locales full of tradition, beauty, and romance.

Twin Farms

Page 93: Bride & Groom Spring 2016

www.bridegroommag.com 93

W hat better way to launch your new life as a couple than a honeymoon full of tradition, beauty, and of course, romance? New England is rife with

opportunities to indulge in the richness of the region’s history in settings that pamper while showcasing the gifts of deep roots and enduring institutions.

Consider New England’s centuries-old reputation as a center for arts, literature, and education. Pair that with the magnificence of the region’s

mountains, the serenity of its bucolic towns, or the allure of its oceanfront, and you’ve got the makings of the perfect post-wedding trip.

Seaside SplendorCome ashore in Newport, Rhode Island and you can celebrate in the neighborhood of the Astors and the Vanderbilts, where oceanfront mansions built in the late 1800s served as sum-mer “cottages” for the country’s wealthiest families. Founded in 1639, Newport is credited amongst the United States cities with the greatest number of Colonial buildings in existence, and is home to America’s oldest synagogue, renowned as an eigh-teenth-century port, a nineteenth-century resort, and, in more recent decades, the site of the “Summer White House” for presi-dents Kennedy and Eisenhower. Today’s visitors revel in the area’s beaches, vineyards, mansion tours, art galleries, and sum-mer music festivals.

The Chanler at Cliff Walk invites visitors to stay in one of Newport’s majestic mansions, yet with a sense of com-fort and ease. Built in 1873 for Congressman John Win-throp Chanler, the mansion has been extensively reno-vated to showcase history with interiors from Greek Revival to Gothic, Colonial to classic Cape Cod. Each of the twenty spacious rooms and suites—most with fireplaces, whirl-pool tubs, and ocean views—offers a delightful honeymoon hideaway.

The Chanler’s staff will gladly bring meals to your luxurious room, make reservations at their award-winning Spiced Pear din-ing room in the main house, or chauffer you to any of Newport’s acclaimed restaurants.

Mountain EscapesIf the mountains provide the wedding escape you seek, New England certainly delivers. Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa exemplifies the majestic retreats that have drawn travelers to the White Mountains since the 1800s. Originally known as the Mountain View House, this scenic haven has provided respite to presidents such as Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt, writers from Ralph Waldo Emerson to Stephen King, and such American icons as baseball great Babe Ruth, movie starlet Bette Davis, and astronaut Neil Armstrong.

Located in Whitefield, New Hampshire, the Mountain View Grand Resort and Spa modernized and re-opened in 2002 with fully renovated guest rooms, golf course, heated pool, tennis courts, and wine cellar. More recent upgrades added a plush in-house movie theater and an impressive spa. In fact, the hot tub, perched atop the Tower Spa with 360-degree views of the White Mountains, could be reason enough to book your honeymoon stay at this spectacularly romantic resort.

The Chanler at Cliff Walk

Those seeking more activity and ad-venture can enjoy the resort’s extensive schedule, which includes dogsledding and snow-tubing in winter, campfires and sports competitions in summer, cider-pressing in the fall, and wine tastings, wagon rides, historic tours, and fitness programs year-round. Area activities, de-pending on the season, include maple sugaring, riding the Mount Washington Cog Railway, downhill skiing, horseback riding, river-rafting, or joining tours to view moose, explore covered bridges, or savor local cuisine.

If you’re looking for a getaway that is both rustic and opulent, take a good look at Barnard, Vermont’s Twin Farms. Origi-nally a 1795 farmhouse that was later made famous as the home of Nobel-win-ning author Sinclair Lewis, this 325-acre refuge offers all-inclusive accommoda-tions, fine dining, and guided activities to guests of its twenty suites and cottages. Home to an impressive art collection fea-turing the work of Jim Dines, Roy Lichten-stein, and Jasper Johns, the beauty of the

lush interiors is rivaled only by the stun-ning views of the property’s meadows, or-chards, and rolling hills, all framed by the majestic Green Mountains.

Revolutionary-era Post Road runs through the scenic estate, yet today Twin Farms is notable for its pristine quiet, and the busiest corridors are those enjoyed by the resort’s hikers, snowshoers, and skiers. Weather permitting, the property’s “Sherpa,” a large snowmobile, transports skiers to the top of a handful of trails for alpine skiing. In season, staff outfit guests for canoeing, fly-fishing, ice-skating, or mountain biking.

Twin Farms is particularly alluring for the sumptuous relaxation it offers. Guest rooms and public spaces are outfitted with wood-burning fireplaces; two mag-nificent, floor-to-ceiling stone hearths reside in the main dining room alone. A Japanese soaking tub called the Furo fills a blue-tiled room surrounded by peaceful woodlands, while individual suites invite

guests to luxuriate in deep soaking tubs or whirlpools with exquisite mountain views.

An Education in HistoryIf your style is not quite so rustic, consider instead the charms of some of New Eng-land’s most historic college towns. Cul-tured, scenic, and brimming with charac-ter, the towns of Amherst, Massachusetts and Hanover, New Hampshire are two prime settings for a romantic escape.

Amherst is a vibrant town in the Pio-neer Valley of Western Massachusetts, surrounded by artsy hill towns and pas-toral farmlands. The town itself is rich with bookstores and cafés, and together with neighboring Northampton, offers an abundant selection of restaurants, concert venues, and museums. Set on the Am-herst Common, abutting Amherst College, Lord Jeffery Inn has served the town and the college since the 1920s. Recent reno-vations have maintained the Colonial Re-vival décor while updating guests’ experi-ence with contemporary facilities.

Don’t miss the opportunity to dine at Lord Jeffrey’s restaurant, 30Boltwood, a richly appointed, candlelit room outfitted with plush banquettes. Talented bartend-ers mix spectacular concoctions reflect-ing local flavors and seasonal influences, matching the farm-to-table menu. On pleasant nights, enjoy drinks or dinner around the inn’s romantic and artistic fire pit on the patio.

Overlooking Dartmouth College is the Hanover Inn, where you can’t help but

Page 95: Bride & Groom Spring 2016

www.bridegroommag.com 95

be awed by the friendly, accommodating service and the convenience of the inn’s central location. Linked by indoor corri-dors to the fabulous Hood Museum and the Hopkins Center for the Arts, as well as the spectacular restaurant, PINE, the Hanover Inn offers a cozy escape from rough winter weather. Yet for those seek-ing outdoor pleasures, the Appalachian Trail is accessed just steps from the inn’s

front door. Play golf or even ski right on Dartmouth’s campus, or allow the inn to pack you a picnic lunch and send you off to area bike trails, a kayak trip on the Connecticut River, or an outdoor concert at the beautiful Saint Gaudens National Historic Park.

The original inn was the 1770s home of General Ebenezer Brewster, before becoming a tavern, then re-opening

as Dartmouth Hotel and eventually the Hanover Inn. In recent years, this Dartmouth-owned inn was exten-sively renovated and now reflects its centuries of history in updated décor featuring local art, stonework, and furnishings.

I Dew: A Quick Guide to Get that Wedding-Day Glow

ooking to get that fresh as a flower, just kissed by the dew goddess glow? Along with eating healthy, sleeping like a newborn baby,

exercising, and honoring your inner child, we have a few tips from area beauty experts on how to get that wedding-day glow.

L

Page 99: Bride & Groom Spring 2016

Amy Brackman, owner of the Beauty Loft at LuxeBeautique, says that brides should begin their “skin boot camp” six months in advance. Brackman notes that the first step is to find an esthetician who has the treatments, machines, and prod-ucts that are focused on results. “Begin by getting a nice treatment to cleanse and detoxify your skin, and be sure to have a regime that includes a cleanser, toner, serum, eye cream, and sunblock,” says Brackman.

Renee Moschella, beauty stylist at Nor-dstrom Peabody and makeup artist, sug-gests that brides select custom products to cleanse and exfoliate as well as use a mask, hydrating serum, moisturizer, and hydrating eye cream. On the day of the wedding, she recommends using an il-luminating balm underneath the founda-tion. She also advises you to keep your look classic by using neutrals and colors that bring out your features.

Katrin Profilet, spa director at the Rowes Wharf Health Club & Spa at the Boston Harbor Hotel recommends a treatment like the Remarkable Radiance-Enhancing Facial for brides looking to get an extra glow, while still maintaining a natural look. “This facial is exceptionally effective and uses fruit acids and a soft peel to brighten, soften, and hydrate skin while diminishing wrinkles and fine lines. This is perfect for the bride with a dull complexion who is looking to shine, or for skin that is dehy-drated or sensitive; there will be no harsh reactions or breakouts,” says Profilet.

“To achieve that desired wedding-day glow, the bride (and groom) should start prepping about 14 weeks in advance. Start with a series of professional peels, which will remove the old, outermost lay-ers of skin and reveal a more youthful complexion. This should be done every other week, allowing the skin to replen-ish itself,” says Domanie Guerrera, esthe-tician at Mayflower Grace. “During this time, the bride should also be mindful of her water intake. It is just as impor-tant to nourish one’s inside as it is one’s outside. One week before the wedding,

the bride should receive a customized facial, in which her esthetician will give her the best results using products and techniques best suited to her skin type. Lastly, the day before or even the day of the wedding, we would recommend a treatment like our Pure O2 facial. This par-ticular facial pushes pure oxygen infused with high-grade serums to best comple-ment the bride’s skin type directly into the

face and neck. This will stimulate blood flow and hydrate the skin. Results are in-stant and because it is noninvasive, there is no downtime or need to worry about redness. This facial will leave the bride with that coveted dewy glow!” says Guerrera.
