1 – WHAT IS AN IMAGE? We are going to learn about:

Here are some definitions: -An Image is:

the main component of visual communication. a graphic or spatial representation which interprets objective reality, ideas, dreams or

feelings. a way to communicate and to express something.

Aspects of the images There are some different types of images: 1. Realist: an image that is very similar to reality.

2. Simplified: an image that has few details. 3. Abstract: an image that doesn’t look like the represented thing.

4. Deformed: an image which is deformed or has no proportion between its parts.

2 - VISUAL COMMUNICATION Visual communication is an information exchange through visual messages. Elements in visual communication: - Sender (emisor): person who emits a message. - Message: mainly images. - Mass media: the way to emit visual messages. - Receiver: person who receives visual information (visual messages).

3 - IMAGES EVERYWHERE - The world is full of images. Today, we’re surrounded by images everywhere. - There are many ways to create and broadcast images. - Photographs, cinema, TV, computers, and internet are important for visual and mass communication. - The visual language is universal. 4 - WHAT´S AN IMAGE USEFUL FOR? Functions of images:

1. Informative. Images can give us information about something.

2. Communicative. Images communicate through: - Trademarks/ logotypes: It is a signal or a distinctive part of a visual message. This kind of message can give advice. These images are useful to differentiate and to identify a product. Example: Nike shoes, Fed Ex or ColaCao chocolate.

- Signs like pictograms. These are very simple images which give us an order, an indication or prohibit us from doing something. Example: A “No Smoking” sign or the given examples below.

- Symbols. These are images which represents an idea, a memory or a feeling. Example: A picture of flowers can be a symbol for spring or love.

3. Descriptive. Images can teach us about different cultures, people, events, etc. A descriptive image has details that show what something looks like. For example, images can show us what Mars and the moon look like.

4. Aesthetic. Images that use colour, light, texture, or composition to be beautiful are considered aesthetic. Usually these images are created by designers or artists, and they express ideas, feelings and different concepts.

5 - IMAGES AT PREHISTORIC TIME Time previous to knowledge or writing is known as Prehistory. It has two ages: -Stone Age has got two periods: - Paleolitic - Neolitic -Metal Age has got three periods: - Copper Age - Bronze Age - Iron Age The Paleolitic Age is divided into Lower, Middle and Upper Paleolitic. During the Upper Paleolitic era, Homo sapiens began their existence. Early man’s great achievement was developing visual representation: the creation of images which look like the real things they represent.

- These images, with their quality and expression, are the first works of art. - We find these images on cave walls. - The themes of these images are animals, like horses, mammoths and human figures. - The techniques are drawing and painting with blood, charcoal, oxidized iron, and other natural materials. - We can find the most Parietal art in southern France and in northern Spain.
