Counselor’s Corner

High School Registration is just around the corner!

It’s hard to believe it is already time to start discussing the high school registration

process. Please remember students are assigned to high schools based on their primary

address. If your child is attending Arroyo Seco based on an Intra- or Inter-District

Transfer, please note that IDT expires at the end of the school year. If you would like

your child to attend a high school other than their home school, a new IDT must be

completed for high school. The window for submitting IDTs for high school is now open

and you are encouraged to complete your request as soon as possible. Forms can be

found on our district website at www.hartdistrict.org under the student drop down menu.

Saugus registration events start in March. Listed below are some important dates:

March 14th – Saugus Athletics and ASB will be coming to Seco to explain their

programs. During their PE classes, students will go to K-Hall for a presentation and an

opportunity to meet with students and coaches in their areas of interest.

March 15th – Saugus Electives will be coming to Seco to share their programs. During

their PE classes, students will go to K-Hall for an opportunity to meet with students,

teachers and advisors, in their areas of interest.

March 23rd – Freshman Orientation at Saugus High School: Saugus High School

Counselors welcome all incoming freshman and their parents to attend this informative

meeting before the Saugus’ Open House. Time has yet to be determined.

April 11th – High School Counselors will be at Seco presenting an overview of high

school and the registration process as well as answering student questions and concerns.

Students will attend the presentation through their history classes. Each student will be

given a registration guide to take home and draft their course requests. Please review the

guide with your child.

April 17th - 21st – High School Registration! Saugus counselors will meet individually

with each student to register and select high school courses. Please note that English,

math and science placements are determined by junior high school grades and

performance. Students will choose two electives and an appropriate physical education

placement. Registration is done through history classes and each team will register on a

different date. Specific team dates are yet to be determined.

Students interested in attending Academy of the Canyons – Students interested in applying for Academy of the Canyons must attend one of two

informational nights. Students MUST be accompanied by a parent:

Wednesday, February 1st Thursday, February 2nd 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Aloha – Mrs. Alcaraz, Mrs. Klipfel, Mr. Oatey, Ms. Senen, Mrs. Chase

Team Aloha is looking forward to a great third quarter. In history class this quarter, we will be

learning about the Japanese Middle Ages including the development of the samurai warrior class.

We will then move on to the European Middle Ages where we will be studying about the

development of the medieval knight and the Crusades. On February 10, many of our students

will be participating in our annual nighttime optional field trip to Medieval Times Dinner and

Tournament where we will get a realistic experience of the European Middle Ages.

In English class, we will be working hard on argumentative writing. Building on the essay skills

we have already developed, we will now be adding counterclaims to our essays, while continuing

to construct strong thesis statements, supporting evidence, and textual analysis. We will be diving

into a myriad of texts including essays, articles, poems, and speeches about the exploration.

Students will be evaluating whether or not the risks people face by examining new things are

ultimately worth the costs.

In Math class, we will start out evaluating Algebraic Expressions which will lead into solving

Equations and Inequalities We will also explore what a scale factor is and how that looks in real

life. Students will be completing a project where they will be able to enlarge an actual item to

show what they know regarding scale factors.

Quarter three in science brings us through a study of the human body and evolution. Students

will learn how their various organ systems work together to give their bodies their structure and

how they perform the functions of life. Students will then study the key scientific principles of

the theory of evolution.

Please remember that Team Aloha offers study club four days a week at lunch to help our

students get extra help or get caught up on their missing work. Study club is held at lunch

Monday in math, Tuesday in history, Wednesday in English and Thursday in science.

Extreme - Mrs. Choate, Mrs. Larochelle, Mrs. Mahoney, Mrs. Simmons

Team Extreme wants to remind you of our website. http://7thgradeteamextreme.weebly.com/

You can find helpful information about our team as well as the WEEKLY HOMEWORK

CALENDAR link. The team will be having a TEAM DAY on Thursday, February 16th. Look

for more details soon.

Page 8: Arroyo Seco Junior High School Seco Gram - 1.cdn.edl.io · PDF fileCounselor’s Corner High School Registration is just around the corner! It’s hard to believe it is already time

In quarter two, students in English investigated “The Stuff of Consumer Culture.” We read,

annotated, and wrote informational pieces on how our consumer practices are informed by

American culture. In Quarter three, students will venture into understanding argumentative

writing and the theme of “Risk and Exploration.” We are beginning by researching contentious

topics and delivering argumentative presentations in small groups. We then will explore space

and the space race by looking at primary sources like a speech by John F. Kennedy, and fiction

such as The Monsters are Due on Maple Street. Finally, students will end the quarter by writing

an argumentative essay and reading the novel, A Wrinkle in Time.

Math 7 worked on Ratios, Proportions & Percents during quarter 2. We discovered how unit

ratios, unit rates and proportional relations are used in the real worked. We created google slides

presentation for the REAL WORLD PERCENTS project. The students did an example of getting

a job, buying a car, getting a loan, finding an apartment, then making a budget for RENT, CAR

PAYMENT, INSURANCE, UTILITIES, CABLE, PHONE and FOOD. During quarter 3 we will

be evaluating expressions, equations and inequalities. We started this unit with stations to review

& learn “the properties of numbers” in math. It is fun way for students to collaborate and learn

through each other.

During the 2nd quarter World History and Geography explored several ancient civilizations in the

Americas including the Mayas, Incas, and Aztecs. We also studied China’s Golden Aged

including the Mongol Ascendancy. During quarter 3 we will be exploring Medieval Japan and

Europe.

Quarter two in science emphasized genetics. We learned how and why traits are passed among

generations. We completed the Pet Project, where we determined the genotypes and phenotypes

of an entire family. We are currently studying in-depth a genetic disease and presenting our

findings to our classmates. In February we will be moving on to the study of natural selection.

Fusion - Mr. Dannerth, Mrs. Malneck, Mr. Nez, Mr. Stuart, Mrs. Chase

Fusion Math classes have started a unit on expressions and equations. This unit will continue

throughout most of the third quarter. Families will have an opportunity to see their students work

during student led conferences later this month!

This quarter in seventh grade English we will continue our journey through the universal themes

of literature as we study the “Hero’s Journey” pattern of storytelling which will unlock a new and

fascinating way for students to analyze literature while they continue their own journey toward

mastering the seventh grade Common Core Standards. We will also continue strengthening our

essay writing skills as we begin a unit on argumentative writing (and the sharp wits of your

children become even more persuasive than ever – don’t say I didn’t warn you).

In science we have been working with microscopes and then moving to evolution.

Fusion students are preparing for both student led conferences and the trip to Medieval Times.

Page 9: Arroyo Seco Junior High School Seco Gram - 1.cdn.edl.io · PDF fileCounselor’s Corner High School Registration is just around the corner! It’s hard to believe it is already time

Genesis - Mrs. Dibene, Mr. Elliott, Mrs. Foster, Mr. Tracy

We are excited to be starting the 3rd quarter and look forward to all that it has to offer. In our

English classes, we are starting the quarter looking at the theme of exploration. We will be

reading about space and adventures under the ocean.

In math we will be focusing on Algebra concepts. Students will be exploring the many skills

related to expressions and equations. This quarter is essential in building a strong Algebra

foundation that will support future math concepts.

In science, we are learning how populations change over time through the process of evolution.

Finally, in history, we are learning about ancient Japanese and Chinese societies. Team Genesis

has the awesome opportunity to have six junior high Chinese exchange students visit at the end of

January for several cultural exchange activities. Genesis students will also start learning about

the Middle Ages in Europe. As you can see, we have a busy third quarter ahead of us on Team

Genesis.

8th Grade

Odyssey - Mrs. Ake, Mr. Bowers, Mrs. Koegle, Ms. Suazo

In Math 8 this quarter we will be studying how to solve equations and how to solve systems of

equations. Through multiple methods, students will discover the solution to a system of equations

is the point of intersection. We will connect the problems in the unit to situations that may be

encountered in real life. For example, we will determine which is more cost effective Starbucks

or Keurig using a system of equations. In Algebra students will be studying sequences and series.

Soon we will be starting a unit on functions and how to solve a system of non-linear equations.

Odyssey English will be working with the Essential Question: How does being a worker benefit

and challenge people? While discussing the Value of Work students will use the Naviance

program to determine their personal strengths. This knowledge will help them to fill out a mock

job application, resume, and a business letter.

In science, Odyssey students will continue to explore energy, this quarter focusing on thermal and

chemical energy. We will explore the factors that affect the rate of heat transfer between objects

by designing and performing our own experiments, we will learn about the molecular structure of

matter, as well as how matter changes phases. We will then move on to explore how matter

interacts chemically. All of this will lead us to designing a container which uses chemical energy

to create the best insulator. Science is always better when it's a verb!

Page 10: Arroyo Seco Junior High School Seco Gram - 1.cdn.edl.io · PDF fileCounselor’s Corner High School Registration is just around the corner! It’s hard to believe it is already time

Revolution - Mrs. Crawford, Mr. Good, Mr. Olson, Mr. Rippe, Mrs. Fumarolo

Revolution Math 8 students are starting out quarter 3 with a boost of confidence. They are

exploring equations. Students are seeing the connections from 7th grade math when equations

were introduced to now when we start working with much more complex equations. It is fun that

kids can start to realize how all the math from different years is related.

1, 8, 15, 22, ... Can you find the next numbers in the sequence? Can you find the 200th term? In

Algebra, students are working with all different types of sequences and series and finding the

formulas for them.

Revolution history will focus on the growth of the nation between 1800 and 1860. We will

examine social and political trends that shaped the nation including slavery, women's rights,

temperance, and government power.

Third quarter, team Revolution students will be studying motion, forces and energy in science.

They will focus first on how speed is determined in a moving object by measuring distance and

time and using the speed formula to calculate a rate. They will be learning how to graph speed,

and how to interpret graphs comparing speed and distance, and speed and time. Then we will be

looking at how forces interact with matter to cause changes in velocity and how those forces can

alter inertia. Students will be learning about Newton's Laws of Motion and applying those ideas

to lab activities. They will also be taking a closer look at the ideas of mass and volume, and how

that influences the density of matter.

This quarter, English students will be exploring the world of work through our textbook

selections, creating resumes, filling out job applications, and writing business letters. We will

then move into learning how to write argumentative essays complete with textual evidence and

addressed counterarguments.

Triumph - Mrs. Ford, Mrs. Gallagher, Mrs. Simoncioni, Mr. VanDyke

In Team Triumph Science, we will be moving on to Physics for Quarters 3 and 4. We will now

explore motion, velocity, acceleration, forces, Newton's laws of motion, and field forces. It

should be a fun quarter with many hands-on labs and activities. Technology will be incorporated

as we learn to use calipers, Triple Beam Balances, motion detectors, and Chrome Books to gather

and interpret data from data tables and graphs.

For Quarter 3, Team Triumph English will be focusing on Selection 6 in our textbooks, “The

Value of Work.” We will also be completing our Career Unit, which includes job applications,

resumes, and business letters, all of which will be added to students’ Showcase Portfolios. This

quarter students will also complete an argumentative essay and performance task for the District.

In math, Team Triumph students will learn how to solve systems of equations, particularly

through real-world life application. High school is just around the corner, so we will continue to

strive for being the best that we can be in all that we do! Great job on the canned food drive!

Way to go Triumph!

Page 11: Arroyo Seco Junior High School Seco Gram - 1.cdn.edl.io · PDF fileCounselor’s Corner High School Registration is just around the corner! It’s hard to believe it is already time

In Quarter 3, Team Triumph students will be learning about how the three branches of

government operate under the Constitution of the United States, and about what their rights and

responsibilities are as American citizens, according to the Bill of Rights. After that, they will be

studying the Early Republic, including all the Presidents from Washington through Jackson. We

will create a flip-book project comparing the beliefs of Alexander Hamilton and Thomas

Jefferson and explaining how their feud led to the creation of the first two political parties. Later,

as they learn about the French Revolution and the War of 1812, as part of my “Hands-on History”

program, students will be able to use a (harmless!) guillotine and hold an actual piece of the

U.S.S. Constitution, a naval ship more commonly known as “Old Ironsides.” Finally, students

will study one of the most interesting figures in American history, Andrew Jackson, and they will

be asked to create a poster depicting Jackson as either a hero, or a villain, and explain why they

Viper - Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Hougo, Mrs. Kurowski, Mrs. Tracy, Mrs. Fumarolo

Team Viper is off to a great start for third quarter. In history, we begin our journey with President

John Adams and the challenges of the young nation. The second part of the quarter will take a

closer look at the westward movement, the industrialized North, and life in the slave South. This

will set the stage for the Civil War in fourth quarter.

Science class enters the field of Physics. Motion, Speed, Density and Force are covered in an

interactive, hands on way. Relating these topics to everyday life is the goal to make the learning

both enjoyable and relevant.

Math 8 classes are returning to equations in one variable, to get a deeper look at how these

equations are solved, written, and applied. We will learn about different types of solutions to lead

into our next unit, Solving Systems of Linear Equations.

English classes are tackling job applications, resumes and business letters at the start of the

quarter as we begin to prepare for Showcase interviews at the end of the school year. Argument

essays with researched evidence will follow in February, and students will have the opportunity

to read and discuss core pieces of text on the value of work. The new year is a very busy time for

team Viper students as we have officially reached the halfway point!

Honor Society

We will be inducting both 7th and 8th grade students into the spring Honor Society in March.

Students must have earned a 3.5 GPA for the first and second quarters of this year to qualify.

Please check the school website for all of the important dates and to download an application.

Exploratories

Beginning Band - Students in the beginning band have made huge strides in in their playing

since they first started playing on their instrument. We look forward to continue our growth

towards music literacy, learning new notes on each instrument, developing a characteristic tone

quality, building technique, and playing as a unified ensemble.

Advanced Band - Advanced band has been progressing in their playing and musicianship by

playing repertoire that challenges them for the upcoming honor band auditions on January 27th

and 28th. At the same time, we are building towards a more refined characteristic sound,

ensemble blend, individual control, articulation, and musicality. This semester we look forward

to collaborating more with Saugus High School, performing at Disney's California Adventure,

nearby elementary schools, and other school events.

Exploratory Music - A new quarter of exploratory music has just begun and I am excited that

the students will learn rhythms and improvisation through drum circle, cultures from all around

the world in our World Music unit, learn about the influence of music in movies and videos in our

Music in the Media unit, learn about and try different instruments in the orchestra, and learn to

read and perform notated music on recorders.

Page 13: Arroyo Seco Junior High School Seco Gram - 1.cdn.edl.io · PDF fileCounselor’s Corner High School Registration is just around the corner! It’s hard to believe it is already time

Culinary I - Students are exploring many exciting themes and discovering their cooking

talents. Topics covered this quarter include food and kitchen safety, recipe reading,

proper measuring, food labels, and nutrition. Students will also prepare several delicious

recipes, such as buttermilk pancakes, fresh salsa, and homemade pizza. Recipes and

pictures of the foods we make can be found on our class website: www.asculinaryarts.weebly.com

Culinary II - Students are learning advanced principles of meal preparation and food

service. This quarter, students will explore topics including menu planning, meal appeal,

attractive plating and presentation, food cost, table manners, and table setting. In

addition, students will prepare delicious recipes, such as cookies, cinnamon rolls, chicken

alfredo, shortcakes, and more. Recipes and pictures of the foods we make can be found

on our class website: www.asculinaryarts.weebly.com

Exploratory Chorus - In Exploratory Chorus we will be exploring a brief history of how music

has developed from the early 1450's starting with the Renaissance Period and ending with current

styles such as Movie, Popular, Country, Broadway, Jazz, and many other modern styles of

music. We will be learning basic music theory in order for students to be able to read through a

choral piece and know what to sing. The students will explore how their voices work and will

learn different exercises that strengthen different aspects of their voice. Students will learn how

to sing together with their peers, sometimes singing all together and sometimes singing different

parts. We will be listening to many different pieces and discussing what makes a piece

considered "good music". We will conclude the quarter with an in-class performance of all the

songs that we will have learned.

Exploratory Drama - In Exploratory Drama we begin by studying the elements or drama and

key words that are important to know when discussing drama. We then look at Greek Theater

and how is was developed, studying the time period and what the expectations and rules were for

theater in the day. From there we study Greek Mythology and see how it was incorporated in

their plays. The students then create their own "god" character and work together to write and

perform a play in the Greek style that incorporates their character. After this we

Page 14: Arroyo Seco Junior High School Seco Gram - 1.cdn.edl.io · PDF fileCounselor’s Corner High School Registration is just around the corner! It’s hard to believe it is already time

study Shakespearean Theater by first researching the life of William Shakespeare himself. We

read through many different scenes of Shakespeare's most famous plays and then end the quarter

by performing an entire Act of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Exploratory Art - In Art class, the students will continue to develop their artistic skills. Over

the coming weeks they will be working on drawing, painting, and printmaking projects. They will

also be learning about art history and the different genres of art.

Exploratory Ceramics - In Ceramics class, the students will be exploring hand-building

construction. They will learn to trim and glaze pottery using a variety of decorative techniques.

Students will also be introduced to the principles of glaze composition and kiln firing.

Design and Modeling - We will be learning the basics of engineering and 3D modeling, printing

out a chess piece and cell phone case.

Flight and Space - We will be building simple flight machines, air foils, gliders and chemical

rockets.

Project CiiMS - Arroyo Seco is now offering coding, we will learn the basics of programming

and make a game and an interactive controller to a custom program.

A.S.B.

Welcome to 3rd quarter! It’s always a busy one.

First up we have a Fundraiser Drive. February 6-10 team teachers will have collection boxes in their classrooms. While we do participate in the Box Tops for Education program donations are not limited to Box Tops. Cash, loose change, and checks made out to Arroyo Seco Library all count toward team totals, and count toward new, current resources for our students!

In April we will host the annual Scholastic Book Fair! I will need extra volunteers 4/12-18. Students will visit through their English classes. Flyers will be sent home on April 10.

Team Extreme is researching genetic disorders. Other teams typically visit to research the Middle Ages and mythology. Many students have been checking out books for reading logs and class novels.

Once again, PLEASE register your Ralphs card to benefit the Arroyo Seco Library! Only 13 households have designated us on their card (and I’m one of them!) It’s free money, all it takes is a few clicks (instructions are included on the following pages) or taking the scan bar to the register when you checkout (contact me for a copy). A portion of your bill is designated to benefit the Library; there is no additional donation from you.

Below you’ll find a fun reading challenge I’ve made available to students to help diversify their reading. Parents are welcome to play along!

Link to the library’s Amazon Wish List.

Feel free to contact me at [email protected] if I can be of any assistance. Happy reading!
