Arroyo Seco Junior High School “We lead, others follow”
Seco Gram_______________________________________________________________________
From the Principal:
Welcome to Quarter 2! Please assist us as we analyze and assess our technology needs. I’m asking all
parents to participate in the BrightBytes Survey. It only takes about ten minutes and we value your input.
The survey window will be open beginning October 17th through November 4th. You can access the survey with the following link:
AS Parent Link - www.BByt.es/HV86P
Thank you for your time and participation.
I’d like to take this opportunity to offer a few suggestions to ensure your youngster’s academic success.
Many middle school students struggle with organization. Help them by having a weekly planning meeting
perhaps 15 minutes each Sunday evening. Sit down with your child to discuss upcoming assignments and
tests and then together agree on a schedule for completion. This helps your student learn time management
and will make the week go smoothly for the entire family.
Use the Binder Reminder provided by the school as a planning tool. Make sure your child is writing all
assignments down and that you are checking it regularly – daily if necessary until they demonstrate
competence and at least weekly to let your child know you are interested in their education. Encourage
them to make checklists of tasks to complete and help them organize the steps involved in long-range
projects. Check your child’s backpack frequently. Have them bring only the school supplies they will need.
Everything else is excess baggage and will not help them either get, or stay organized.
Be sure your youngster is getting plenty of sleep. At this age, they still need at least 9 to 10 hours of sleep
per night. Studies show that students suffering from lack of sleep cannot concentrate, retain information or
behave satisfactorily. Sleep deprivation can cause behaviors that are often mistaken for Attention Deficit
Disorder.
Monitor your child’s television, telephone and computer time and habits. Internet access can be a
wonderful educational tool, but it can also present a real danger for vulnerable minors. Let your child know
that you will be monitoring their text messaging and Internet activity including social websites such as
“Snap Chat”, “Instagram”, “Facebook” and more because you care about them. These forms of
communication are not confidential and often lead to hurt feelings, peer conflicts and unnecessary “drama”
on campus. Unfortunately, some students carelessly say mean things and even threaten other students via
social websites. They are often unaware that this is a criminal activity and can involve law enforcement and
consequences.
Finally, enjoy these middle years because they go by quickly. Soon, you will be the parent of an
independent successful young adult. And as always, please feel free to contact me or any of the staff members here at Arroyo Seco, if we can assist you through these exciting years.
Rhondi Durand, Principal Issue Number 2 October, November, December 2016
Counselor’s Corner
At the beginning of second quarter, grades reset for all subjects except Algebra. Now is a good
time to sit down with your child and develop some goals. Junior High students are great at setting goals but struggle with what steps are needed to reach those goals. Persistence and
dedication can be challenging to them as they live in an immediate world. A great question over
breakfast or on the drive to school would be something like this: “What are you going to do today to help you reach that B in history?” Be sure to follow up with them later in the afternoon.
“Were you able to meet with your history teacher at lunch today?” If they didn’t accomplish
what they set out to do, ask them what got in their way. Explore ways they could have handled
the obstacles, or most likely, balance the social time with their friends and still get in to see the teacher.
Share strategies with your child to help them be academically successful while fostering responsibility of their own learning. Junior High students, especially our seventh grade students,
revel in the freedom that junior high brings but often struggle with the shift from one or two
teachers continually monitoring their progress to six teachers making time available for students who need extra help. Taking ownership of their own learning and advocating for themselves is a
learned process. Teachers encourage students to come in for help, but students need to get to
their “appointment” with the teacher on their own. A little encouragement, and sometimes
insistence, from a parent is necessary to point them in the right direction. Below are some suggestions to help your child develop the work habits and skills to be a successful student:
Set a consistent homework time where your child will be free from distractions such as the cell phone, television, video games and younger siblings.
Review with your child the list of homework assignments needing completion. Utilize your child’s binder reminder and team homework calendars posted on team websites. Links to the
team websites can be found at www.hartdistrict.org/aseco.
Check off completed assignments as your child puts them in the proper folder or notebook and back into his or her backpack.
Know when teachers are available to help outside of the regular class time and encourage your child to utilize that help.
Assist your child in preparing for tests and quizzes. Be sure your child completes all study
guides, attends any extra study sessions offered by the teacher, and takes advantage of any second opportunities post-testing if necessary.
Check Infinite Campus weekly with your child to monitor grades and concerns. Be sure to access the grades through your child’s schedule so you can see the teachers’ grade books
including specific assignments and comments. Log-in directions and information are available on
our website and in the student planner.
Email your child’s teachers or counselor, or have your child email, if you have any questions
or concerns.
Together we can help your child develop the independence necessary to thrive in their academic
world. As the famous saying declares, “Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day; teach a man
to fish, and he'll feed himself for the rest of his life.”

From the Attendance Office Now that school is in full swing the Attendance Office would like to remind
all our parents and guardians of a few things that will assist everyone in
ensuring that your child is able to maximize their learning time here at
Arroyo Seco.
1) The easiest ways to excuse absences are with a quick phone call to the
school or a note brought to the Attendance Office.
2) If you send a note to school with your child to excuse an absence or
authorize an early dismissal for a doctor/dental appointment please have
your child take that note to the Attendance Office, NOT a team teacher.
3) No parents or guardians should be meeting their child during nutrition,
lunch, or between classes without having first checked in with the
Attendance Office and obtaining a visitor’s pass.
4) After two (2) weeks, “Unverified” absences will become “Unexcused”
absences and may cause your child to be assigned consequences at school.
Phoning the Attendance Office or sending in a note with your child can
easily clear these absences.
5) Remember that school starts at 7:45 AM. Please help us ensure that your
child gets to school on time and is ready to learn!
6) Our automated telephone system will call you if your child has missed
two (2) or more classes and has been marked “Unverified”. Please feel free
to call the Attendance Office if you receive a phone call that you believe is
an error. We would be more than happy to assist you clear up any
confusion.
If you have any questions concerning your son’s or daughter’s attendance or
need clarification on any of our attendance policies, please call our
attendance technician, June Higgins at 661-296-0991 x1. She is always
happy to assist you!
Team News
7th Grade
Aloha – Mrs. Alcaraz, Mrs. Klipfel, Mr. Oatey, Ms. Senen, Mrs. Chase
Team Aloha has settled into the start of a great school year. We have enjoyed meeting all
of your children and teaching them through this first quarter.
In history class we just concluded our Islam and Africa unit and next we will be covering
the Civilizations of the Americas - Aztecs, Incas and Mayas. We had exciting geography
challenge tournaments in all of five of our Team Aloha classes this past week.
In science we started out with a study of the nature of science, how science is done in the
real world. We also used our knowledge of energy and systems to study ecology. We
are now starting second quarter applying those same NGSS cross-cutting concepts to the
study of photosynthesis and respiration.
In English second quarter we will be exploring the topics of individuality, friendship and
love while reading about a free-spirited and unique girl as she navigates through high
school, and tries to fit in with her classmates in Stargirl.
In math this quarter, we started with the number system which included adding,
subtracting, multiplying and dividing rational numbers. This included integers, fractions
and using absolute value. We are all looking forward to a successful second quarter.
Please remember that we offer study club for our students four days a week: Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday at lunch.
Extreme - Mrs. Choate, Mrs. Larochelle, Mrs. Mahoney, Mrs. Simmons
Team Extreme welcomed the year with an outstanding effort during the fundraiser.
Thank you parents & students for all of your support.
To begin the year in Math we discovered how integers and rational numbers can be used
in the real world. The students finished the quarter with solving probability problems.
We dive into ratios, unit rate and percents in quarter 2. These real world skills were
learned, practiced and understood in a cooperative learning setting.
First quarter in English had students reflecting on taking “Bold Actions” and finding the
courage to face challenges. Students read and compared of variety of fiction, non-fiction,
and poetic texts on this topic. Students also focused on their own narrative writing,
completing two short stories and an original poem. Finally, students also independently
read novels and completed a creative book report project on that text. In quarter two, we
will be focusing on “The Stuff of Consumer Culture” and informational essay writing.
First quarter Science was the time to observe tiny objects with microscopes and delve
into the world of cells. We built models and created foldable projects. Quarter two we
will be learning about genetics and creating our own paper pet families.
In History, we studied and analyzed the causes and effects of the vast expansion and
ultimate disintegration of the Roman Empire, and analyzed the geographic, political,
economic, religious and social structures of the civilizations of Islam and Africa during
the Middles Ages. Quarter Two brings the study of Meso America, China and Japan.
We enjoyed an Ice Skating Mixer at Valencia Ice Station with Team Fusion! It was a fun
night!!
Fusion - Mr. Dannerth, Mrs. Malneck, Mr. Nez, Mr. Stuart, Mrs. Chase
Fusion has started the year with a wonderful parent turn out for both Back to School
Night as well as our Team Night. Thank you to all who donated tissues to the team to
help keep the students healthy as well as the generous donations to the school for the
Seco Games.
In Science we are finding out about photosynthesis and respiration as we move into
genetics. Thank you to all who have donated magazines and to the science funds.
Fusion math 7 classes finished up a unit on fractions and probability. Up next is working
with ratios and proportion. Math 7 accelerated classes are currently studying scientific
notation problems and will soon move onto working with square roots and the
Pythagorean theorem.
Genesis - Mrs. Dibene, Mr. Elliott, Mrs. Foster, Mr. Tracy
It has been a great year so far and we are looking forward to what the second quarter has
to offer. We started the year by winning the first ever Seco Games competition. Our
athletes won the basketball shooting contest, the tug of war, and the trike race. We also
finished well in all of the other events, earning enough points to be the winning team for
the school. We also had a successful fundraiser which will help to pay for our end of the
year field trip to Ventura Beach.
Keep in mind that all grades start out fresh at the start of the second quarter. Please take
advantage of Infinite Campus and the homework calendar on the team’s website to check
on your student’s progress throughout the year. We have had a great start to the year and
look forward to it getting even better!
8th Grade
Odyssey - Mrs. Ake, Mr. Bowers, Mrs. Koegle, Ms. Suazo
Odyssey English will be working in our new textbooks with "Collection 2: The Thrill of
Horror".
The students will be answering the following Essential Question: How do writers
organize information to effectively explain a topic?
In History, we are wrapping the major events of the American Revolution before heading
off to structure of the American government. We will discuss and analyze the strengths
and weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation, and how it led to the creation of the
U.S. Constitution. Students will then study the structure and major functions of the U.S.
Constitution. As we conclude the quarter, we will investigate the roles of the first few
presidents and how they shaped the new, emerging country.
In Math 8 we are learning about linear functions and data analysis. We will be collecting
data through a variety of activities answering some of the following questions: How long
does it take to pass a hula hoop down a human chain? How much does Domino's Pizza
charge for each topping? How does your height compare to your arm span? We will use
this data to graph and write equations of lines which we can then use to make predictions.
We will also be studying data collected from passengers on the Titanic and interpreting it
from two way tables. The students will end the quarter with a survey project of their own
and a present their mathematical findings to the class. In Algebra we are currently
learning about matrices, a pre-calculus topic! Soon we will be starting a unit on statistics
including measuring distributions, scatter plots, and lines of best fit.
In science, we will continue our exploration of energy. We will learn how gravitational
potential energy transforms into kinetic energy. We will use this knowledge to build
roller coasters that maximize this principle. We will then move on to explore the world
of electricity and magnetism. Once we explore the properties of these forces, we will use
our new-found knowledge to build simple motors. It's going to be another fantastic
quarter in room 902 as we explore the science behind our natural world!
Revolution - Mrs. Crawford, Mr. Good, Mr. Olson, Mr. Rippe, Mrs. Fumarolo
In Quarter #2 Revolution History students will examine the major events of the
Revolution and the goals of the Founders as they wrote the Articles of Confederation and
then, later, the US Constitution. Time will be spent examining the concepts of "Rights"
and "Liberty" and how they are enshrined in the US Bill of Rights. We will then examine
the major events of the presidencies of George Washington and John Adams.
In English this quarter, students will be reading suspense tales and analyzing author
techniques. They will also be writing explanatory essays.
In Science, much of first quarter was focused around the structure of the atom. Students
have also learned about the properties of matter. They have studied the states of matter
and how energy can change a solid to a liquid, a liquid to a gas, and how the removal of
energy can cause the reverse of those changes of state. Students have just started a
presentation project on the Periodic Table which will carry over into second quarter
where we will be starting chemistry. During second quarter, students will be looking at
electrons and the role they play in the bonding between atoms. They will also learn about
molecules and compounds, and do experiments demonstrating evidence of chemical
reactions and chemical changes within materials.
As we conclude first quarter, team Revolution math students are really working hard
coming down the home stretch. Students in Math 8 just finished working with angles,
and are now beginning to work with functions and seeing how they can apply to real life.
In Algebra, students are diving into matrices. They are getting quite the challenge as this
is a pre-calculus standard that they get to tackle in 8th grade.
Triumph - Mrs. Ford, Mrs. Gallagher, Mrs. Simoncioni, Mr. VanDyke
Next quarter in English we will kick off with the second unit in our textbooks, “The Trill
of Horror,” which will align perfectly with October! We will learn about, read, and
practice writing informational texts in quarter 2, ending the quarter with a performance
task from the district office. Team Triumph will have a Halloween Team Day, and we
encourage our students to continue to participate in Spirit Days and on campus activities!
In Team Triumph Science, we have learned about physical and chemical properties and
changes. Then we investigated states of matter and changes of state. Over the next few
weeks we will learn about parts of atoms and how they are arranged on the Periodic
Table of Elements. We will use this knowledge to begin understanding the changes that
take place during a chemical reaction.
In Quarter 2 our students will be learning about the events leading up to the American
Revolution, and the struggles the new nation faced under the Articles of Confederation.
They will also be learning about how the three branches of government operate under the
Constitution of the United States, and about what their rights and responsibilities are as
American citizens, according to the Bill of Rights. Students will be creating an artistic
project describing the powers of the three branches. Also, as part of our “Hands-on
History” program, students will get to examine Mrs. Gallagher’s collection of political
buttons as we discuss the November election and how the Electoral College works.
On Team Triumph, we are looking forward to studying linear functions in the second
quarter. The students will likely enjoy working with real-life applications of math.
Viper - Mrs. Anderson, Mr. Hougo, Mrs. Kurowski, Mrs. Tracy, Mrs. Fumarolo
As second quarter starts, here’s what students have to look forward to on Team Viper.
English classes will begin a unit on The Strange and Mysterious followed by a career
assessment and the writing of technical documents. We will cover expository writing in
the form of a mini research project. Book reports also continue this quarter, so encourage
your child to be reading his/her book of choice at home.
In history, we will move quickly through the Revolutionary War and our nation’s first
government under the Articles of Confederation. The Constitutional Convention will then
lead us into our government unit. Our November project will have students looking at
current events and understanding how they relate to the three branches of government.
There will be lots of conversations about the election, candidates and the role of
government!
In Math 8 we will be learning about graphing linear equations and algebraic functions, as
well as interpreting graphs of functions and their meaning in the real world.
And finally, Science will mix it up in Chemistry. Labs, demos and activities reinforce the
concept of element interaction.
All students will have the opportunity to purchase a new team t-shirt for $10. Information
will be distributed soon! Watch for more updates and students of the month selections in
our monthly Viper Pit.
Exploratories, Clubs and other News
Honor Society
On October 21, we inducted over 160 eighth grade students into our fall Honor Society.
These students earned at least a 3.5 grade point average for the two quarters before. We
also held a lake cleanup event at Castaic Lake where many of these students came out to
earn their service hours.
We will be inducting both 7th and 8th grade members during the 3rd quarter. Please see the
school website for all of the important Honor Society dates for the year.

Beginning Band - Students in the beginning band have made huge strides in in their playing
since they first started playing on their instrument. Although the students have only been playing
for about six weeks, we are preparing to showcase their progress in our upcoming casual concert on October 25th. We look forward to continue our growth towards music literacy, learning new
notes on each instrument, developing a characteristic tone quality, and playing as a unified
ensemble.
Advanced Band - Advanced band has been progressing in their playing and musicianship by
playing repertoire that challenges them for their upcoming concert on October 25th. At the same
time we are building towards a more refined characteristic sound, ensemble blend, individual control, articulation, and musicality. The advanced band musicians have also been receiving help
from Saugus High School Section Leaders and have demonstrated their leadership abilities by
helping the beginning band musician’s growth in their own musical journey.
Exploratory Music - A new quarter of exploratory music has just begun and I am excited that
the students will learn rhythms and improvisation through drum circle, cultures from all around the world in our World Music unit, learn about the influence of music in movies and videos in our
Music in the Media unit, learn about and try different instruments in the orchestra, and learn to
read and perform notated music on recorders
Culinary I - Students are exploring many exciting themes and discovering their cooking talents. Topics covered this quarter include food and kitchen safety, recipe reading, proper measuring,
food labels, and nutrition. Students will also prepare several delicious recipes, such as buttermilk pancakes, fresh salsa, and homemade pizza. Recipes and pictures of the foods we make can be
found on our class website: www.asculinaryarts.weebly.com
Culinary II - Students are learning advanced principles of meal preparation and food service. This quarter, students will explore topics including menu planning, meal appeal, attractive plating
and presentation, food cost, table manners, and table setting. In addition, students will prepare delicious recipes, such as cookies, cinnamon rolls, chicken alfredo, shortcakes, and more. Recipes
and pictures of the foods we make can be found on our class website:
www.asculinaryarts.weebly.com
Exploratory Chorus - In Exploratory Chorus we will be exploring a brief history of how music
has developed from the early 1450's starting with the Renaissance Period and ending with current styles such as Movie, Popular, Country, Broadway, Jazz, and many other modern styles of
music. We will be learning basic music theory in order for students to be able to read through a
choral piece and know what to sing. The students will explore how their voices work and will learn different exercises that strengthen different aspects of their voice. Students will learn how
to sing together with their peers, sometimes singing all together and sometimes singing different
parts. We will be listening to many different pieces and discussing what makes a piece considered "good music". We will conclude the quarter with an in-class performance of all the
songs that we will have learned.
Exploratory Drama - In Exploratory Drama we begin by studying the elements or drama and key words that are important to know when discussing drama. We then look at Greek Theater
and how is was developed, studying the time period and what the expectations and rules were for
theater in the day. From there we study Greek Mythology and see how it was incorporated in their plays. The students then create their own "god" character and work together to write and
perform a play in the Greek style that incorporates their character. After this we
study Shakespearean Theater by first researching the life of William Shakespeare himself. We read through many different scenes of Shakespeare's most famous plays and then end the quarter
by performing an entire Act of A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Exploratory Art - In Art class, the students will continue to develop their artistic skills. Over the
coming weeks they will be working on drawing, painting, and printmaking projects. They will also be learning about art history and the different genres of art.
Exploratory Ceramics - In Ceramics class, the students will be exploring hand-building
construction. They will learn to trim and glaze pottery using a variety of decorative techniques. Students will also be introduced to the principles of glaze composition and kiln firing.
Design and modeling - We will be learning the basics of engineering and 3D modeling, printing
out a chess piece and cell phone case.
Flight and space - We will be building simple flight machines, air foils, gliders and chemical rockets.
Project CiiMS - Arroyo Seco is now offering coding, we will learn the basics of programming and make a game and an app.
A.S.B.
First quarter in ASB was definitely a success. We had a wonderful turn out to the first
dance and fantastic support of our direct drive donation fundraiser - Seco Clash for Cash.
Congratulations to team Aloha for being our overall winners in the Seco Clash for Cash.
Overall, Arroyo Seco families and friends donated over $57,000. Thank you so much! To
reward students, and to build team spirit, students spent a day competing in the Seco
Games. Despite Aloha’s point advantage going into the games, Genesis proved victorious
and were named the winners.
Second quarter will provide numerous opportunities for students to get involved in
activities on campus. Halloween will be a fun and spooky as students participate in the
Halloween noontime and maze. November brings the Turkey Bowl football competition,
and the Hunger Games. We will be having numerous spirit days and encourage students
to participate by either wearing clothing that fits the theme or their Arroyo Seco Spirit
wear. Students are also able to earn team spirit points by volunteering in the community.
Students are encouraged to speak with their team teachers to get additional information
and to log their community service hours.
