Key to Long Term Archiving

The knowledge of an ISO standard for operations is not widely known in the market.The ISO standard, ISO/IEC29121, defines the migration timing and a safe level of error rateat the time of writing and during storage.

For long term archiving with optical disc, thechallenge is always “media has to be recordedproperly”. It goes without saying that themedia quality must be suitable for long termarchiving. It also requires the use of the properdrives to record data properly and to maxi-mize writing quality.Until now it has been difficult to properly

validate archival standards and related oper-ation due to the lack of a common systemsolution and no standards in the market thatdefine the “rule” that has to be followed bythose who need to retain the important dataon optical discs. The initial writing error ratehas a direct impact on the length of archivallifetime.

JVC Archival Grade DVD-RIn response to strong demand from archivists,government agencies and service providersfor a recording medium that will retain impor-tant data to the highest possible standard, JVCAdvanced Media, the world’s leading manu-facturer of optical discs, developed “ArchivalGrade DVD-R”. This coupled with the fact that there is noworldwide standard that defines the test

method to estimate the longevity of opticaldiscs, has caused many misunderstandingsin this industry regarding archival grade prod-ucts. JVC Advanced Media has now intro-duced the world's first DVD-R in compliancewith ISO/IEC10995, the industry standardthat defines the test method for estimatingDVD-R longevity.

Our Archival Grade DVD-R passed ISO/IEC10995 testOptical disc manufacturers have been claim-ing archival lifetime based on the result oftesting performed without the clearly statedcritical test details or important factors forlong term archiving. ISO/IEC10995 test is avery reliable and stringent test method. Thismethod takes fluctuation in disc quality intoconsideration and eliminates factors unre-lated to longetivity estimation. The ordinarytest method that most manufacturers use is

to take a simply average value in each testconditions for the estimation. As a result,claims of longevity vary from 30-100 years.This simple average creates a probability that50% of the result is below the average.ISO/IEC10995 test does not define the lengthof longevity, however it says 95% of the discshave to survive for over 30 years at the con-dition of 25°C and 50% relative humidity.

Our Archival Grade DVD-R is fully tested by an independent testlaboratory called ADTC-N in Japan. The test is conducted using theinternational standard ISO/IEC10995. The certified results for ourproducts depict an archival life of more than 30 years. The logo isgiven to the products by ADTC to properly certify these results. Allthe users can choose the proper products for long term archiving bylooking at the logo affixed to the products.

Unique Features of JVC Archive GradeArchival lifetime could be affected by thestorage capability of DVD-R. It goes withoutsaying that rigorous specifications for theelectrical and mechanical characteristics of

the DVD-R are important, but the raw mate-rials used for the DVD-R, such as reflectivelayer and organic dye, are also vital.

As you know, there are existing DVD-R discsthat employ “gold” on the reflective layer. Itspurpose is to minimize the degradation of thelayer during long-term storage. However,generally speaking, reflectivity (an importantparameter for writing process) on gold islower than that of silver. Simply changing the

material in that layer may cause an escalatedwriting error rate, which affects the lifetimeof recorded discs. Additionally, JVC use silverbased reflective layer because most of thedrives in the market is designed with silverreflective layer discs and the best compati-bility between these are secured.

“Special Silver Alloy” is employed on the reflective layer

Our Archival Grade DVD-R employs a uniquely developed “special alloy” on the silver based reflective layer to maintain suitable reflectivity so that long-term storage capability can coexist.

The design of the organic dye is also impor-tant for long-term archiving. Additives devel-oped in-house are used for the organic dyefor our archival grade DVD-R. This minimizes

decomposition of the organic dye by heat orlight during long-term storage since the sig-nal (data) cannot be read back if the dye isdecomposed.

Qualitycontrol is set at the highest level and inspec-tion frequency is approximately 10 timesgreater compared to standard products. Thisallows the minimum fluctuation of the prod-ucts needed to meet strict storage require-ments.

The low occurrence of initial error rate is a keycomponent in achieving long term archiving.All error rates are decided by the quality ofthe drives and media used. For this reason,we developed archival grade drives that havespecialized firmware used to optimize JVCarchival grade media. This combination en-sures the best recording quality and extendsyour disc migration period. Our uniquely developed self-diagnosis soft-ware verifies proper drive operation andmanages results to the required levels. This

process and self-diagnosis consistently pro-vides the best -recording outcome. An LEDlight turns on automatically and this desig-nates that a recalibration test is needed. Therecalibration test is done every 200 hours.Once the recalibration test is completed theLED light turns off and the count resets tozero, assuming the result meets the presetJVC quality level. If degradations are found,the LED light stays on and further action isrequired.

Industry standards strongly recommend thechecking of disc quality before archiving dataon optical discs or during long term storage.ISO/IEC29121 defines the initial occurrenceerror rate and the rate during the storage forsafe data retention. JVC’s Error Checker wasspecially developed for the archiving indus-try with the primary objective to provide safedata retention on optical discs.It is an easy operation. After inserting a discand pressing a button, discs are automaticallytested and the result and warning level is

shown. The results can be downloaded to CSVfile for analysis and review. This exclusive errorchecking technology was developed by JVCusing its expertise and extensive experienceas the market leader in disc manufacturing.JVC has employed all of its knowledge andengineering into this product. The ErrorChecker also has a self-diagnosis function toensure the best possible condition of the uniton a consistent basis to achieve accurate testresults.

As shown below, error rate, warning level andthe required time interval for the next test willbe displayed on the screen for a full under-standing of the disc conditions. The displayedindexes comply with ISO/IEC29121. Theseindexes define how to achieve the safestarchiving on optical discs through the man-agement of error rates. ISO/IEC29121 sets as‘initial error rate at <140’ and ‘archiving errorrate (during storage) at <200’.

There are some other values explaining thecondition of the discs such as jitter and devi-ation. The error rate (PIE and POF) representthese rates. (Error rate is escalated when oneor more of these values are at an unsatisfac-tory level.) The management of error ratesenables users to accurately understand thedata condition.

label, MID, testing date, warning level andthe time interval before next test.
