House after renovation1st Floor Plan

For this two-family house my responsibilities included but were not limited to: going on site to measure the existing structure, creating existing and proposed drawings, working with the contractors to ensure the house was built according to drawing specifications and NHS standards, choosing the exterior paint colors, and working with an energy rater to make sure house met Energy Star 3.0 standards. One of my favorite characteristics of this house was the fish-scale shingles that were discovered after removing the existing aluminum siding from the front facade.

Lilac Street Cluster Redevelopment Plan

32LILAC

STREET

Completed 2014: 32 Lilac Street was constructed from plans drawn from the Yale University School of Architecture’s Jim Vlock Building Project. The open design for this single-

family residence centers on communal spaces: a large kitchen and great room that span the full length of the house. The home also features a central light-well that illuminates the

kitchen during the day. The large windows and sliding glass doors provide a complete view of the yard and neighborhood.

NHS uses a cluster strategy to implement their mission of revitalizing troubled neighborhoods through rehabilitation. This involves purchasing several properties on a block, fixing them, and selling them to community-conscious individuals. The idea is that fixing several housing near each other will inspire the neighbors to make improvements on their properties as well, raising house values and restoring pride back into the neighborhoods.

There are currently seven properties in the Lilac Street Cluster. Three properties are complete, three are currently under construction, and one which will be worked on this year. Of the seven projects in this cluster, I have been involved with five houses. I was the architectural designer for 15, 28, & 35 Lilac- doing the existing measurements, creating the proposed drawings and renderings, and selecting the exterior paint colors. 32 Lilac is the only new construction project in this cluster. For this property I assisted the lead Project Manager, and for 52 Lilac I assisted in measuring the property.

Smith Townhouse

The program for this project was to design a two bedroom townhouse with an art studio and gallery space for Carole Smith (owner of Richard Meier’s Smith House located in Darien CT.) The site was a 32ft by 65ft corner lot with the water-front located along the north side (rear of house), and streets along the southern and eastern sides. The most public areas are located on the ground floor (studio and gallery space) and as you move upwards the spaces become more private. The 2nd floor holds the kitchen, office, dining room, living room, and laundry area. The 3rd floor has the bedrooms and roof top terrace which overlooks the water.

Process Diagrams

This was the final project for a digital media course. The assignment was to take a simple shape and in 3 moves create a pavilion which to be placed in the plaza adjacent to the Lexington Public Library. I choose to use a rectangle for my simple shape. The first step was to extrude the rectangle to created a rectilinear prism. Next I bent the form to create an arch-like figure and then twisted the form to create a ribbon like structure.

The top of the pavilion is covered with colored ceramic tiles, which would reflect colored light around the structure. The openings within the pavilion would allow colored light onto the base and surrounding ground. The pavilion is meant to be a sculptural piece which the public can touch and interact with.

In the summer of 2011 the US Postal Service released a list of proposed post office closings. Many of the closings in the state of Kentucky were located in the eastern portion of the state in the region known as Appalachia. The focus of this GIS project was to create maps (static and interactive) using Ersi ArcGIS software to be used by the University of Kentucky Appalachian Center. For this group project I was responsible for geocoding addresses to create the base maps, researching and compiling census data (population, income levels, poverty rates, etc...) and embedding hyperlinks of post office photos to the interactive map.

Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven Website

One of my first projects during my VISTA year was a group project to redesigning our organization’s website. I was responsible for designing and implementing the following pages: -Affordable Housing (all pages in section) -Energy Conservation Lab (all pages in section)

Despite having very little HTML coding or web design experience, I was able to create over 100 pages. One of my favorite sections is the Before and After pages which catalogs over 80 projects from the past 15 years. To make viewing the catalog more user-friendly, I created an interactive map using the skills I learned in my GIS courses.

Modified version of original logo

New logo

Original logo

Healthy City Healthy Climate Challenge is a city wide movement in New Haven, CT. promoting healthier living and climate change awareness. To promote the challenge I designed the logo to the left, and various marketing materials such as posters, banners, and brochures.

Ballin’ for the Cause was a fundraising event at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. I created the logo on the right and posters to promote the event which raised around $1400.The original sketch-like black and

white logo was created in the 1990s and the next logo was created around 2010. To create the latest logo I reverted back to the original logo because it had more details and a crisper look. I used the colors from the modified version for the final version of the new logo. This logo is now used on all NHS promotional material and the letterhead.
