If you're looking to start a career - whether it'sbecause you're just beginning your journey asa working adult or because you're ready for achange in life - you should know that theprocess is much larger than just getting adegree and looking for a job. A career involvesknowing your interests in a particular indus-try or area, knowing what to expect as far ascompensation and responsibilities and re-searching what tools and knowledge you willneed to be an asset for companies in thatindustry. It's wise to begin your pursuit byeducating yourself on what careers are in de-mand and what skills you need to enter thosecareers. Job seekers and students seeking adegree to build their skills need to take con-trol of their careers," says Abby Kohut, a hu-man resources executive, recruiter andauthor of "Absolutely Abby's 101 Job SearchSecrets." "They need to understand the con-nection between their education and a mean-ingful career by becoming more informedabout where their interests lie, what jobs arein demand and what education is needed togain the skills that today's employers de-mand."Here are few simple steps that canhelp to get you started:

1. Understand your interests - Some col-leges and universities offer prospective andcurrent students complimentary self-assess-ment options to help them determine careersthat fit their interests.

2. Understand the employer needs -Knowing what jobs will keep your interestgoing strong is a good start, but it is alsoimportant to learn.

what employers need from workers in thatfield so you can take the right college coursesand learn the appropriate skills. You alsoshould learn what jobs are in demand in yourfield of interest, so you can assess whetheryour career of choice offers room to enter andgrow

Studies shows that 77 percent of job-seekers areusing mobile apps to access the Internet fortheir job search. And unemployed people whosearch for jobs online get jobs 25 percent fasterthan those who only search from offline re-sources such as newspapers. Searching onlinecan be a great way to find your dream job, but italso requires you to take extra precautions toprotect your personal information and to man-age your online reputation.

Enterprising identity thieves and scam artistsmay take advantage of personal, identifyinginformation posted on job boards and onlineresume sites. And with social media makingpotentially embarrassing information and im-ages widely available, it's important for job-seekers to manage what potential employersmay find if they were to perform an onlinesearch of a candidate's name.

Protecting your personal information

When you post a resume on a job board, theinformation is usually public and viewable byanyone who wants to see it. Some websites al-low you to control what is viewable and who cansee it, limiting access only to potential employ-ers who have registered with the site. Others donot restrict who can access resumes. It's impor-tant to know the privacy policies and settings ofany employment website where you will postyour resume or apply for jobs. Consider howmuch personally identifying information you

When you're job-hunting you go to great lengths to stand out amongst thehundreds, even thousands of applicants for a single open position. But whileyou're working to catch an employer's eye, have you considered the importanceof protecting your information from unwanted attention?

12

will share. Information such as your name andpast work history may be essential, but keep inmind that no potential employer should everask for your Social Security number or financialinformation during the initial phases of yourinteraction. If a response to your resume comeswith a request for your SSN or account number,be very skeptical and ask why this informationis needed so early in the application process.

Protecting your current job

Consider how your current employer will reactif someone from your company comes acrossyour active resume online. While your currentemployer likely won't fire you just for postingyour resume on a job site, the situation can - atthe very least - be uncomfortable. Before youbegin circulating your resume or posting on jobboards, be sure you know how your currentemployer would react if your information wasfound online. If you wish to keep your job searchprivate, make sure to review the privacy settingsof any job search websites you're using. Conductyour search as honourable as possible, sendingresumes, emails, etc. on your own time - and not

Page 13: A-loc mag April Issue

when you're supposed to be working for yourcurrent boss. Likewise, maintain a separateemail address that you use solely for your jobsearch, never use a work email address duringa job search.

Protecting your prospects

By now you've likely read or heard media reportsof prospective employers searching social mediasites for information on job applicants. It'simportant to manage what employers may viewin social media. If you haven't already done so,restrict access to your social media accounts sothat your posts and photos can only be viewedby people you've granted permission to. Be sureto set privacy settings to their most restrictive.

Remember there is no place like home. Youmight be leaving your current employer becauseyou believe or think that things are different elsewhere or for what ever reason, but what if this isnot the case? What if your new employer isworse than the current one? What if your newoffer is shortened by the unavoidableretrenchment process? Will you still be able togo back to your previous employer and ask forwork?

It is for this reason that you need to exit yourcurrent employment on a good note. It is not agood idea to bad mouth your employer in whatever case because as much as people areconnected these days, So are the companiesaround the country. Employers are of theopinion that if you could do it to company A thenyou can also do it to them so be careful all thetime, even on twitter.

EXIT AND START YOUR NEW JOB ON A GOOD NOTE

Holidays are supposed to be fun. But the struggleto find the right gift can put a damper on eventhe happiest celebration. The good news is itdoesn't have to be that way. With a few simpletips and tricks, you can learn how to take thestress and hassle out of shopping for presentsand focus on the joy of giving.

1.Bet creative: Not sure what to buy?Sometimes it's as simple as a little investigationon social media networks. Friends or familymembers often post clues on Facebook, Twitteror Pinterest which indicate their interests or"must have" items.

2.Stay organized: Make a list of storesthroughout the year where you've seen gift ideasand presents you'll want to purchase for theholidays. This will cut down on the number oftrips you make to the mall. Also, keep blankcards on hand for any occasion, as well asenvelopes and stamps, so that sending cardsbecomes as easy as walking to the mailbox.

3.Don't break the bank: Create a budget forgifts. Managing finances and shopping withinyour means will take away some stress andrestore a sense of control. Then relax and enjoythe occasion without fretting about your nextcredit card statement.

4.Designate a day: Dedicate a day, or even justa few hours, to shopping. Crossing all of yourerrands off at once will feel like anaccomplishment and free up time for otheractivities such as spending time with friends andfamily.

5.Be practical: No one wants to buy a gift that'sgoing to collect dust in the recipient's closet.

Page 14: A-loc mag April Issue

Instead, buy something that will be useful. Andremember, useful doesn't mean boring; it meansthoughtful - like a gift card to a favouriterestaurant or a vase for a friend who loves freshflowers.

6.Don't hesitate to gift cash

To make gift giving even simpler, why not give afriend or family member the freedom to buywhat they want? Giving cash is the best way toensure that the gift will go toward somethingthey really want. Better yet, it means no moretrekking to the post office, paying outrageousshipping fees, dealing with crowds at a mall, orwaiting in long lines. It's a win-win situation.

And, with advances in mobile technology, giftingmoney is easier and more convenient than ever.

Biz 4 YouthThis section is meant for young and upcoming businessmen and women who are eager to grow their businessesbeyond the normal level.

‘‘One of the biggest mistakesbusinesspeople make is assumingthat working from home willautomatically result in a higherlevel of productivity. Unless youcarefully construct your homeoffice environment, you may findthat working from home is lessproductive than you anticipated

Setting up the home officeHome office setup is an exercise and a step into startingyour own biz. Before you make any decisions, make a listof the things you need in order to spur productivity. Somepeople can work at a desk in a common area of the housewith the television running in the background. Otherswant a closed-door environment where distractions areminimized. For some people, a home office is a place tofinish up work from a regular day job. For others, a homeoffice is a primary workspace where they spend eight ormore hours of the day. Before you start rearranging thefurniture, decide what you need as an absolute minimumto encourage you to use the space as intended.

The right office furniture, equipment and supplies

Once you have decided whether you're going to segregatean area of the living room, convert a spare bedroom or setyourself up in the basement or garage, you should startthinking about-home office furniture.-The type of officefurniture you pick and the way you organize your spacewill significantly impact your productivity. Whatever yourpreferences are, investing money up front in the style ofoffice furniture that makes you comfortable will naturallylead to greater productivity. At the very least, this ensuresthat you won't be tempted to relocate to the bedroominstead of working at your desk. Likewise, an up frontinvestment in office supplies and equipment will help youget your work done faster and avoid distractions.

The cost of outfitting a home office

A basic home office setup can cost you under R5000 if youalready have a computer that you can relocate to your newspace. There are a number functional-office furnitureoptions-that look expensive but are actually quiteaffordable, especially if you are willing to put the furnituretogether yourself. A printer and a phone with voicemailcan round out a basic home office setup. Don't forget to

17

set aside money in your home officebudget for office supplies. From paperto paper clips, you will have to buy allof the little things that you took forgranted when you worked for anemployer. A home office is sometimesconsidered the holy grail for peoplewho work. Who wouldn't want acomfortable home oasis wherecommuting is a foreign concept andthe work just gets done? To achievehome office nirvana, make a plan thatis specifically designed to meet yourindividual needs and choose the righthome office furniture.

Puleng is currently not happybecause of the alarming rate ofwoman and child abuse inSouthern Africa. She believe thatwe need more anti rape campaignsas well as preaching the rapegospel in our churches , Schoolsand clubs. By so doing we willreduce the rape rate significantly. As fo the young people in SouthAfrica her advice is not just todream and have a vision in life butto also pray and ask for guidancefrom the almighty.

Most of the people don’trealise that they expressthemselves through what theywear. Simply put, we go to ashop, see something we like, something that we feelcomfortable in and decide tomake a purchase transaction. We don’t always take intoconsideration colours or fabricor how that particular itemcame into being. Today, I bringyou into the mind of MariselaVeludo,The owner and theprincipal designer at Passion 4Fashion. Let me introduce youto the new range of clothing byPassion 4 Fashion:The Eclectic LineWhat does this mean? What isthis word eclectic? Eclectic fromWikipedia means derivingideas, style or taste from abroad and diverse range ofsources. Urban Dictionary’stake on this is very similar: Thisdescribes a combination ofmany different individualelements of styles, themes, mediums or inspirations pooledfrom many sources. It can referto musical tastes, dress sense, interior design etc.Inspiration comes from thingsaround us; Marisela owns 2parrots, which are from theSolomon Islands. They arecalled Solomon Island EclectusParrots. From this, inspirationstruck and a way to express herfashion came from the very petsshe owns.

Expression of Fashionfrom a Designers Mind

She decided to make her linebased on the tropical parrots ofthe world. Parts of the initialline up include the SolomonIsland Eclectus Parrots, theCockatoo, the African GreyParrot and the Seychelles BlackParrot.

Eclectus Parrots: two designscame from this. The dresscalled Loki was inspired byLoki - Marisela’s male parrot –this is our flagship dress. As thename Loki (Norse god ofmischief) suggests. This dress’sstunning colours were derivedfrom the male eclectus parrot. The design oozes naughtinessand a look at me style. Thematching shirt is of a uniquedesign, one that is form fitting, with a zip and no collar. Anycouple wearing this is bound todraw attention to themselves.

The dress called Rubi wasinspired by Marisela’s femaleparrot. (Ruby - a red gemstone. Loved for its deepred). This fun and funky designinspired by the female eclectusparrot incorporates all thecolours this bird has to offer. The waistcoat is moretraditional with a full back. Thecouples who wear this willcome across as vibey, fun andpassionate.

The dress called Coti wasinspired by the Cockatoo. Muchlike the bird, this dress is simpleyet elegant and form fitting. Thewaist coat has an open back witha buckle for adjustments. Thecouple who wears this will oozeconfidence, sex appeal andelegance. The dress called Silverwingwas inspired by the African GreyParrot,a simple looking bird andat a closer glance the birdexudes intelligence. With thisdesign, you will see stunninggreys and silvers and bright red. This dress talks to the crowd. The dress and the waistcoat, both designed to be tied up foryour own comfort. Couples whowear this, will be seen asinteresting, appealing andconfident.

Last but not least is the dresscalled Obsidian – inspired bythe Seychelles Black Parrot. Thisbird is striking in its simplicityand like the dress design, itsbeauty lies in its simplicity. Thisis not just another blacknumber. The dress is designedas slim and elegant and themen’s top as a muscle huggerbuilt for comfort. This matchingset is for couples who want to benoticed, when they want to benoticed.23

As you can see the expression of fashion in thissense is inspired by nature itself, the beauty withinit, sleek lines and stunning colours. With naturebeing all around us and the rare beauty of it notoften seen by many, Marisela decided to bring someof nature’s exquisiteness into life and expressed thiswith fabrics and designs ultimately creating her ownpiece of the Garden of Eden all around her.

How much thought do you put intothe outfits your wear on a dailybasis? Are you like some many of usthat have honed things down to ageneral daily uniform? Perhaps youhave a weekend version and a workversion? Or are you more daring andadventurous with your style choices.Lately I have been thinking a lotabout my clothes and how they canaffect my attitude for the day, andabout what my style choices sayabout me. It’s fascinating to me thatwearing a ‘hot-number’ will makeany girl strut down the street with aconfidence and sophistication of ayoung noble, while a pair of jeansand an ironic t-shirt will have anyoneready for “chill session” in the city.Fashion has such a huge influence onus, without us noticing! I personallydon’t put that much effort in theevening into what I’ll wear the nextmorning, as long as I can find a goodcut of pants and graphic t-shirt withsome retro slogan or image on it I’mgood to go, while some people wouldlike their clothes to make a boldstatement and reflect a little on theirpersonality. Recently, I straddled thewide open spaces of a verypredictable and often slow pacedBloemfontein which when comparedto the more upbeat, bustling andquite frankly obnoxious atmospherein Johannesburg, one cannot helpbut notice the enormous amount ofdetail that goes into the appearanceof the locals. Daring displays ofcolour and adventurous uses offabrics, with over the timepresentation of designs and heavilycoordinated accessorizes. Outfits sobold and unique they would rivalanything shown on the runways of

What I’ve noticed about fashion ishow it changes society’s perceptionof style and appearance. Many arewilling to go to extreme measuresin order to keep up with currenttrends. It’s fascinating the attentionto detail that goes into every littlebutton, belt, and any accessorynever mind the depth displayed aseveryone strives to show theindividual status through theirattire. The trends themselves seemlop sided, we went from naturalcolours to colour blocking; gold wascool, then it faded and resurfacedagain; leather pants are back instyle and men can wear skirts now;you can even raid yourgrandparents closet if you don’thave any options, the quest forultimate expression is both neverending and could cost you if youaren’t careful.Thrift shops haverecently become popular as peoplebegan realizing that payinganything above R250 for a t-shirtwas just plain daylight robbery, youdon’t have break your bank accountto achieve true style. Bargain baseshopping is the new 5th avenuewhere finding something odd orpeculiar is more rewarding thenhow much you spent on or thebrand name.‘‘Fashion is an art formand you can find artvirtually anywhere, it’sall in how and whereyou look’’Men’s fashion has also enjoyed anevolution, no longer do men haveto be bound by social norms orgender appropriate roles orstereotypes. Men can now wearskirts, big hoop earrings, headwraps, short shorts.

We’ve even have purses, bags clutchwallets for the more sophisticateduptown brother on the go. Men'sfashion has crossed some verydeeply set boundaries to becomemore flexible to the average manwho wants to stand out amongst thecrowd. So whether you’re the kind ofperson that likes to dress up ordown, there’s no denying that whenit comes to self-expression, fashionis the one sure way of showing theworld your personal taste, believesand personal definition of‘awesome’!Personally I don’t reallybuy into all of that, as I said earlier agood pair of pants, graphic tee, comfy pair of shoes and I’m ready fora meeting with the queen of England. It’s good to be up on the latest oftrends but don’t forget to keep itsimple

2. What does fashion and freedommeans to u?

Fashion is also a way of expressingyourself I can tell a lot about a personfrom what they are wearing, fashionsays who you are and what you standfor or believe in. So freedom and fash-ion go hand in hand coz my brandspeaks through fashion from whateverthat’s bothering us to the massage weare trying to deliver

3. Looking in the fashion industrywhom do u perceive the bestfashion designer

I really don’t have a favorite designer Ihave a long list of them from your un-derdogs to commercial designers, agarment a designer produces says a lottells you a story the designer is trying toportray, its deeper than the designer tome I see beyond that

4. What can u say about 1970's1980's 1990's fashion

The 70s, 80s, 90s fashion now thosewhere the best years coz people wereopening up everything was still freshquality was best and people took they’refashion serious, that’s why fashionkeeps going back to those years coz wehonor those that set the bar and pavedway for us so our work could be recog-nized and taken seriously

5. How would you define your city'sfashion

My cities fashion is all over the placefor now but we are catching on andfinding our own voice that’s the mostimportant thing coz I don’t believe infollowing what’s happening out therespecially with the rich heritage my cityhas so I focus on that a lot me beingfrom Orlando west Soweto and that’swhere freedom comes in coz we’ve gotso much to say and be grateful for

Young and aggressive,

This is the best way to de-scribe the young South Afri-can fashion designer ZakheleXumalo from Soweto.I meantake a look at the picture onthe background. Raw as itis, one cannot miss the truemzanzi style all over theshot. I like it. This is just anexample of the design workdone by Vicious Souls, aclothing brand owned by Za-khele. Countless recognitionawards found their way intothe VS studios Including theone from the Young Design-ers competition powered byThe cell phone giant Nokia.Do you remember Tkzee’shit song Sdudla? ViciousSouls took part in dressingthe lead girls there. Reallyimpressive. They have alsodressed Miss teen Soweto, and have also supplied theConcept stores such as The-sis and Dope.
