Everyone had fun at theclub during the month ofMarch and we must give

credit to our members for makingour Friday dinners and Saturday

night events outstanding. JoyceCraven has done an incredible jobtaking reservations for the FridayNight dinners. Every dinner hasbeen almost at capacity and ChefTyler Andersons food has beendelicious.

During the month we had twosuccessful theme nights: MardiGras and a St. Patricks Day din-ner. Many thanks to Misty Kal-

treider and Lindsay Newton fortheir creativity and hard work onthe Mardi Gras event. Photos onpage 5.

Kurt Stahr was in charge of theannual March cruise-out to LochLomond for St. Patricks Day. Hefailed to spread the word to thoseof us who had signed up for thecruise that he had decided to holda heavy weather sailing class.

Boats that made the trip were StarShip, Lady Di and Charisma. While evaluating the success ofthis cruise, Kurt has said maybethe next cruise should be by carwith boats optional.

    --Steer the Course

Our first cruise-in of theyear was Tiburon YCfor a three-day stay.

They joined us for dinner onFriday but missed Mardi Gras

featuring our own ChuckYoungsons Pickle CreekString Band. The club wasdecorated with masks, beadsand Mardi Gras finery. ChefAnderson supplied a New Or-leans style menu and the bardid a brisk business in rumHurricanes. One lucky partier(Dean Stahr) bit into a red vel-vet cake with the baby insideand won a basket of Southerndelights.

St. Patricks traditionalcorned beef dinner was hostedby Clay & Mary Parker andprepared by Chef Anderson.Brunch continues to be a popu-lar once a month event. OnMarch 27, Merrilee and Ihosted. Charter members Bill& Jackie Finnegan and Daryl& Kathy Nord were at the cor-ner table with Charter Mem-bers Barney & Evelyn Silveri.

Bartender Donald Bureshconducted a training sessionfor eight would-be volunteerbartenders in the past month. Thanks, Donald, you deserve abreak now and then.

Our social chairs, Misty &Lindsay, have many newevents planned this year. Ittakes a lot of behind the sceneswork to make them happen. We appreciate your support sowe can all have more fun.

March proved to us allthat winter is still withus. Our annual pilgrim-

age to Loch Lomond was eventful, according to Cruise Captain Kurt

Stahr. Wind and rain combined tomake it challenging. There is anunconfirmed report that Charismaeven had a sail up on the say home.No damage...good time had by all.

Many thanks to our Building andGrounds team, Tom Nunan andNorm Madsen. Most visible accom-plishments so far are the change outof the light bulb on the pole in theparking lot, new lighting for themerchandise display and the powerstation lighting and the elevated

lighting on the dock are workingagain.

Wednesday, April 13 , starting at9:00 am, we need your help withour annual work party day. Pleasevolunteer. No special skills are re-quired and there will be jobs foreveryone who shows up. Once ayear we need volunteers to do someroutine maintenance to keep ourclub looking sharp.

Next cruise out is April 9-10 toCorinthian YC. Cruise Capt. Cra-ven says the sign up sheet is fullwith a waiting list. He promises bet-ter weather...wait and see.

The second quarters safety work-shop will be a Saturday in May.Merrilee Newton is arranging forCPR training. Ill send e-mailblasts when dates are set and moreinformation in the May newsletter.

MaxineMaasreportsPICYAOpeningDayontheBayDelegatesMeetingLeadershipConferenceMany of our members are not ac-quainted with the Pacific Inter-Yacht

Club Association a 95 member group

    that represents boating interests in

Northern California so this is a timely

    update from our PICYA Delegate

    Maxine Maas.

PICYA Delegates were hosted on March 7 bythe Half Moon Bay Yacht Club. Attendancewas high because it was the first visit to theclub for many delegates.

The Leadership Conference was a great suc-cess. The Americas Cup Trophy was on dis-play to encourage all member clubs to attendthe exciting upcoming events on San FranciscoBay.

Giants of the Bay is the theme for OpeningDay on San Francisco Bay on May 1, 2011.Emperor Norton IV will make an appearanceto help judge decorated boats. The PICYA-sponsored committee boat this year is theHornblower at Pier 3. I will be aboard - wave

as you go by. Cody Points (see PICYA websitefor details) are awarded to clubs that partici-pate in the Opening Day festivities.

RBOC (Recreational Boaters of California)represents boaters in Sacramento. Their billSB643 regarding copper bottom paint was notacted upon. There is no supporting evidence ofcopper paint damaging the environment andno substitute for copper based paint for boats.Check their website for information on thebubble barrier that is being put in place onthe Delta to help young salmon navigate. I pre-

sented a check from the NVYC for $363.00 tosupport their efforts.

Encinal Yacht Club will host the WheelchairRegatta again this year.

The next Delegates meeting will be April 4 atthe Aeolian Yacht Club in Alameda.

Call me if you want more information.--Maxine

Star Ship and Lady Di went to LLYC on Thurs-

day to miss Fridays storm. Friday morning wewoke up to strong winds and heavy rain whichwas pushing our stern-tied boat at an angleagainst the dock and away from the launchramp.

Lady Diwas tied against the dock at the other end

of the walkway. Luckily, the day before we put twospringlines on the starboard side ofStarShip. We tied

another line to a piling next to the launch ramp thatstopped the boat from swinging too far but the windwas so strong we couldnt straighten the boat until itdied down about 1:00. Charisma arrived with Phil

Craig aboard about 2:00 and tied up securely againstthe finger dock. They reported that their ride downthe bay was pretty good and the wind had died down.

Saturday we woke up to storm warnings for thatevening. The Marina and LLYC port captain wereconcerned about us being at the dock with a predic-tion of strong winds and heavy rain. They urged us tohead home so we did. The ride home was bumpy andwet but manageable since wind, current and boatswere all heading in the same direction. There is anunconfirmed rumor that Charisma might have put up a

    sail on the way home.

Gary & Sherrill Schager made the trip to LLYC intheir RV but also headed for home in Oregon after thewind warnings. Avi started down the Napa river butturned back due to what looked like fouling on hisboats running gear. Dirk saw the weather forecast

and decided, rightly so, not to leave his home port.

LLYCs Charles Vick sent me this e-mailwhen we returned to Napa: You left at the

right time as things just worsened. I clockedgusts of 40k plus. At high tide, waves bangedagainst the underfloor of the clubhouse, thebumper log at the parking area was washedashore to the parking lots center and two pil-ings were bent over 25 degrees. Inside the clubwe hardly noticed anything but when we leftaround midnight, it was obvious this storm wasserious.

Inside the club we had a fine time... a bag-piper, potato decorating, raffles, Irish karaoke,Irish dancers, superb corned beef dinner. Hope

to see you next year. I am sure the weather willbe better.

    Eight Bells for Lou Schirm

Lou Schirm, NVYC member since 1994, passed on March 16after a fall. Two weeks shy of his 91st birthday, Lou was a

much-loved family man who served in World War II in Bel-gium where he met his wife Yette. They raised 5 children insouthern California before moving to Napa in 1993 whereLou was an active community volunteer with groups includ-

ing the Boy Scouts, Napa PC group, and several veteransgroups. While living in the Riverpark neighborhood, Louserved as port captain at the NVYC and was a regular at Fri-day Night dinners. Always generous and good-humored, he

treated club members to drinks on his birthday. Our condo-lences to Nicky, Lorette, Lou IV and their families. (ev)
