Are you fed up with the racket of doorsslamming shut? Do you need more space inyour home? Then you will enjoy discover-ing the virtues of pocket doors, which havethe marvellous advantage of disappearingcompletely into the wall.
Think of all the extra space you’ll create byno longer needing the clearance necessaryfor opening a hinged door. Even better, apocket door will glide quietly into the wall, with no banging. This system is a practicaland visually pleasing way to separate abedroom and a bathroom, for example, or adining room and a kitchen. Wherever youdecide to install a pocket door, circulationwill become more fluid and you’ll be able toplay with space and light, especially if youchoose glass doors.
For practical purposes the installation of apocket door is best done when the wall isbeing built, as this type of door requires adouble wall to slide into. That means youwill have to plan on knocking down theentire wall if it is a renovation job. If it is asupporting wall, you will have to reinforceit by building a header with two beams, because this type of door is held by a metalframe that has to be fixed between the two
walls. A pocket door slides along a track atthe top and a guide rail at the bottom toensure smooth operation. A stopper preventsthe door coming off the rail when fully open.
Pocket doors
Three elements affect the priceof a pocket door: the frame,
the door itself, and the installation.

More and more people work from homethese days, but few of them possess a suit-able area in which to spend their work day. With this in mind, here are a few tips for cre-ating a stylish and functional home office.
Choose a quiet area that is well lit, wellventilated, and where there aren’t manycomings and goings. Ideally it should bein an enclosed room, far from sources ofnoise such as a television, a child’s bed-room, or the front door. It is important thata home office be independent from therest of the house; this will help you sepa-rate your professional activities from yourprivate life.
Décor is another important element to con-sider, as a home office requires a special sortof atmosphere. Why not try an increasinglypopular trend in home fashions: eco-luxury.
Creating this style simply means using recy-cled materials or objects in order to producea more up-market look. Choosing furniturethat contains a blend of Plexiglass, goodquality leather, and recycled wood is a won-derful way to introduce this kind of elementinto an office setting. Other ideas includea chair and footrest covered with recycledfabrics, such as denim, to convey a touch ofplayfulness and dynamism.
An office is also a great place to practice eco-design, a trend that promotes the optimiza-tion of recycled materials, simplicity, andrestraint. A low-clutter philosophy is key, asit will allow you to improve your concentra-tion and work in a more productive manner.Last but not least, be creative when choosingstorage: there is no need to spend a lot ofmoney when a simple system of storagerails, boxes, and shelves is all you need.
An air of simplicity makes any office pleasant and welcoming.

Black has always been a timeless symbol ofclassicism, modernity, and luxury in homesand fashion. For the 2012-2013 season, back-to-school trends are seeing black appearonce again at the top of the colour chart.
Black in interior design is now being trans-formed into a total look, both as a back-ground tone against which coloured objectsstand out and vice-versa. Latest trends offerus three choices in colour combinations:used with blue to produce a Thousand andOne Nights atmosphere, with grey for anindustrial design look, or with gold to recre-ate the Baroque style.
Although a dramatic effect can be createdby marrying black with gold, be careful notto overload the room with glitzyobjects. Overstatementcan also be circumventedby choosing natural mate-rials, which are a sure betfor avoiding tackiness.Synthetic materials, lac-quered blacks, or any kind ofshiny surface should not beincluded in this type of décor.Velvet drapes and cushionsshould also be avoided. Chooseinstead linen or leather for cush-ions, while natural wood furniturewill help you create an understatedand elegant décor.
Think twice before painting a ceiling black,as this will make the room look smallerand sinister. Remember that an all-blackdécor absorbs light and does not reflect it.Do feel free to experiment with a positive-negative effect by playing with lightingand accessories.
Black: your homeimprovement project for this fall
There are many differentblacks available this
season: jet black, smokyblack, licorice black,
and raven black, whichcontains a hint of blue.
A painted wooden floor can bring new lifeto any room, but don’t limit yourself to justone colour. Explore the art of metamor-phosis and create a diamond pattern for aunique look.
Your first steps in this renovation project areto clean the floor and then apply a coat ofblack wood stain. To start creating the pat-tern, draw a line on the floor with a piece ofchalk right across the centre of the room, running parallel to a straightwall. Decide on the size ofyour diamond pattern byensuring that each angle thatintersects the base line formsan exact 90° angle.
Mark the diamonds to be paint-ed and demarcate the indi-vidual borders with maskingtape. Cut the corners of thetape in such a way as to obtainprecise angles. Apply the dif-ferent colours of paint to eachelement of the pattern with apaintbrush. Epoxy-based paintis recommended for floors.
After you have painted your pattern, remove the masking tape around each dia-mond as soon as you’ve finished so that youcan clean up any wet paint that has rununder the tape. Finish the wood with fivecoats of varnish, leaving each coat to dry forat least an hour. You will be able to walk onthe wood floor after applying the last coat, but it will take at least a week before thevarnish is hard enough to resist pockmark-ing from furniture.

You’ve been planning for it for weeksnow — and dreading it, too. Moving dayis finally here, and the best way to jumpinto it is with a good breakfast. Sure, yourkitchen stuff is all packed up, but a cup ofyogurt and fruit, or a bagel and peanutbutter will give you some protein for thehard day ahead.
Have you arranged for someone to lookafter the children? If not, give them some-thing to do; it’s a matter of channeling theirstress in a positive way. Keep the box withtheir favourite toys close at hand. Preparesome snacks. Let them play in an emptyroom, far from all the hubbub. Leave yourpets in a closed room with theirfood and water bowls, cat lit-ter, and baskets. Put a sign onthe door asking the movers notto disturb them. Ensure the ani-mals are wearing identity tags.
Everything has to be ready togo when the movers arrive, whether they’re moving com-pany pros or friends. Don’t for-get to disconnect the fridgeand take out the garbage. If youhaven’t already done so, pre-pare a box with a first-aid kit, cleaning products, toilet paper, and other important items toput in your car. Make sure thatthe moving team has the cor-
rect address of your new house and try tobe there before them.
If you’ve hired a moving company, here isa tip: inspect your furniture before it leavesyour home and check it again when itarrives at its destination. If there is any dam-age, ensure that it is clearly indicated onthe invoice. Request a receipt if you haveto pay the movers at the end of the day.
Try to give yourself short breaks through-out the day. Drink some cool water andeat healthy snacks, such as fruit, nuts, andcheese, to keep up your energy levels andyour morale.
Wake up and get ready
The first thing to do once everything ismoved into your new home is to reward allthose who came out to help you. Pizza, donuts, and refreshments are the classictreats for amateur movers. Take the time tothank everyone individually and, if youcan afford it, offer them a token of thanks, such as a gift certificate. No matter whatthe amount, it’s the thought that counts.
Psychologists say that once the move isover, you should set up young children’sbedrooms as quickly as possible. Theyshould go to sleep surrounded by familiarobjects, even on the first night. Theirtoys, their stuffed animals, and their secu-rity blankets will soon reassure and com-fort them. As for teenagers, they’ll behappy to be involved in setting up theirnew bedroom.
Perhaps you had the opportunity to cleanand paint before moving in. If not, cleanthe bathroom and the kitchen cabinetsfirst. Before launching into painting andrenovating, take the time to carefully planthe logistics, including budget, amounts ofpaint or other materials to buy, and colourschemes. It is better to think things overfor a few days than have to live with a mis-take for months, or even years.
The organization of storage space alsorequires some thought before you startputting things on shelves. After all, youwant your new home to be neat and tidy, right? If space is cramped, you can shopfor space-saving accessories to help youorganize every room in your home.
Try and take a day or two off work tounwind and open a few boxes. The sooneryou have them unpacked and the stuff putaway, the sooner you’ll feel truly at home.

The secret to moving house without stress, or almost, can be summed up in one word:organization. From the moment you decide to move, start making a list of everythingthat has to be done and stick it on the fridge door. This will help you to meet all thedeadlines and get ready for the big, stressful day.
AS SOON AS YOU KNOW THE DATE OF THE MOVE• Reserve the date with a moving company. Choose a well-established business, anddon’t rely solely on quotes. It’s better to pay a touch more for good service.• If you rent a truck, contact family and friends who could give you a helping hand. Besure to call or send out an e-mail to remind them a few days before the move.• Change your mailing address. Companies to contact with your new information: elec-tricity provider; telephone; Internet; cable; insurance providers (take this opportunityto update your home insurance policy); financial institutions; the school your childrenattend; government agencies; and lawyer.
FOUR TO EIGHT WEEKS BEFORE THE MOVE• Pack your belongings. Select cardboardboxes that are easy to carry. Identify eachbox. Photograph valuable objects.• Find someone to look after the childrenand any pets on the day of the move.
THE LAST FEW DAYS• Prepare a box to put in your car. It will con-tain any bits and pieces that will come inhandy during the move. Pack it with a first-aid kit, toilet paper, tools, cleaning prod-ucts, and garbage bags.• Unplug all non-essential devices or appli-ances and tape the electric cords to their sides(lamps, deep freezer, and home cinema).
Sure, it’s hard to think of everything aheadof time, but good organization will help youavoid the worst-case scenarios. Good luckwith your move!

At last, spring has sprung. The sun feels somuch warmer and soon everything in theyard will be bursting into leaf. There’s nodoubt about that urge you’re feeling: it isindeed time to do some spring cleaning.
Cleaning the house is exhausting work andmany of us try to put it off for as long as wecan. And yet, our families’ health and ourcomfort are at stake. Tomake this big job a littlebit easier, just take it onestep at a time.
1. SORTINGBefore starting in on thecleaning, throw out orgive away any objectsthat you no longer use. This goes for clothingas well. It isn’t an easychore, but your closets will thank you for it,as will the community organizations in yourarea who inherit your donations.
2. WASHINGNext comes the washing. Drapes, rugs, bed-spreads — be sure not to forget anything. Some fabrics need to be dry cleaned, soyou’ll have to entrust them to the pros. Andfor carpets, you can bring in a carpet clea-
ning service or rent a carpet cleaning ma-chine at the grocery store or hardware store.
3. CLEANINGAnd now it’s time for some good old-fashioned elbow grease.Whether it’s the win-dows, cupboards, walls, or ceilings, everysquare inch of the house should be scrubbedspotless. Getting everything clean will help
you eliminate thedust and allergensin the air. Oncethat part of thejob is finished, youcan tackle the bed-rooms, where themattresses shouldbe turned and va-cuumed. Beforeputting the sheetson, slip a fabric
softener sheet under the mattress cover fora lasting fragrance.
ENTRUSTING THE JOB TO AN EXPERTOf course there is another solution if thethought of doing all that work leaves youfeeling discouraged: call in a cleaning com-pany. Housekeeping services are fast, effi-cient, and surprisingly affordable. It’s worthlooking into!

It’s likely that every household will need the expertise of a plumber at some point, whether it’s to fix a headache-inducing dripping tap or to replace a worn-out waterheater that has everybody starting the day with a cold shower.
Good plumbers are methodical and flexible and can adapt to the demands of any kind ofsituation. Available for after-hours call-outs, they can come to the rescue in the evening,on weekends, even on public holidays. They are a particularly welcome guest atChristmas, if a toilet decides to pack it in while you’re entertaining a house full of guests!
Plumbers are able to work from building plans, which allow them to trace the layoutof water and sewage piping along walls and partitions and even outdoors. They build
or repair plumbing systems by cutting pipesto the desired length, welding them together, and connecting them to heating systems orbathroom fixtures. Plumbers are also calledon to clean oil-fired boilers, and they canrecondition or replace appliances to meet cur-rent standards. Their work can sometimes takea long period of time or more than one visit.Clients can ask their plumber for a time andmoney estimate for any kind of job. With thehigh demand for plumbing renovations inolder buildings and the installation of sanitarysystems in new buildings, qualified plumbersare busy tradespeople.
Even though plumbing is a largely manual job,it has undergone some major changes over thelast few years. Plumbers now often use PVC,a plastic material, in addition to iron, stainlesssteel, zinc, and copper.
A sense of curiosity, an understanding of tech-nology, and meticulousness are all necessaryqualities for a successful plumber.
A dripping tap? A blocked sink? What you need is a PLUMBER!
Good plumbers must be methodicaland flexible so they can adapt to every
new plumbing situation.

Construction painters are usually the last workers to complete their jobs on constructionsites or renovation projects, as their work truly lies in the finishing of any new space.
These tradespeople can advise clients about the decoration of walls and ceilings: flat orsatin, brush or roller, dark colours or light? Everything depends on the look you wantto create. Painters don’t just need to know the materials and techniques required; theyalso need to have the eye of an artist in order to use colour and harmonize shades tocreate atmosphere.
The painter’s work is, above all, one of finishing, which means it is the very first thing that peoplenotice when they enter a room. The needs ofowners of private homes, offices, stores, andworksites change with every job, so construc-tion painters have to be flexible enough to adaptto them.
Construction painters are also in great demand tocreate trompe-l’oeil effects, such as the false mar-ble look or textures that include sequins, droplets,or sponged effects. Their care and meticulousnesshelp them to perfect new techniques as materialsevolve and new decorative paints come on themarket. Professional painters are also up to dateon the use of organic paints, which cannot beapplied in the same way as oil-based paint.
Clearly, following the latest decorating trends isan important part of the work of constructionpainters. It is all a matter of achieving that per-fect finishing touch!
