A father and son were arrested during thepast week after they allegedly assaultedpolice officials, in addition to allegedlyusing their work vehicles illegally. Theincident happened at the premises of atrucking company situated at the industrialsite in Modimolle on Thursday, 10 April.Police spokesperson Warrant Officer

James Findlay said that four sheriffs of thelocal magistrate’s court went to thepremises to load some goods and two ofthem went to the owner’s office, while theother two remained in the truck.He said the police had to intervene after

the owner, 40-year-old Francois van Biljonstarted being very aggressive during adiscussion with him, the sheriffs and hisson, Pieter (20). Van Biljon allegedlyassaulted one of the sheriffs and a policeofficial present, before locking them in hisoffice.Warrant Officer Findlay said that Pieter

then brought a chain, which Van Biljonpulled the sheriffs’ and the police’s vehiclesoff his premises with. He added that the

that they hand over their passports to theinvestigating officer, never leave theWaterberg Region without investigatingofficer’s permission and report to thestation on Mondays, Wednesdays andFridays between 6:00 and 18:00. Theywere also instructed never to have anycontact with the state witnesses.According to the information received, the

father had an outstanding case of recklessand negligent driving, and the son foranother case of assault. All their cases areexpected to proceed in court on Tuesday,29 April.

Station to be charged.In the early hours of Monday, 14 April,

residents of the township were seencollecting spilled Mabela with bucketsand sacks. Some of them said thatthey were going to use it as chickenfeed, while others apparently intendedto cook and eat it themselves.

Tebogo Ngeu, a truck driver, landed inhot water this week after rolling histruck at the entrance to the Bela Belatownship.Ngeu, who appeared before the

Magistrate’s court on Monday, 14 April,stands accused of drunken andreckless driving.The incident occurred late on Sunday

afternoon, when a loud bang woketownship residents from their Sundaynaps as the unfortunate Ngeu’strailers went into the water.

The police in Modimolle areinvestigating a case of house robberyfollowing an incident that happenedat a local farm on Wednesday, 9April.Police spokesperson Warrant

Officer James Findlay said that twomen who were dropped off on agravel road entered the farm andfound its two staff members waitingfor their vehicle nearby. He addedthat the men then grabbed and pulledthe workers back into the farm andtied their hands and feet. WarrantOfficer Findlay said that the suspectsthen went through the house, lookingfor electrical appliances. He addedthat they managed to steal a fewappliances, cash amounting to R950that belonged to the workers and

A Bela Bela resident, Hein Swanepoel,has voiced concerns regarding funeraltents on public roads.Swanepoel apparently noticed the

tents during his morning work duties,while travelling in the township.“I travel in the township for work during

the week and I’ve noticed that funeraltents are often left unattended for daysbefore the actual event. The tents arenot only congesting traffic, but alsodamage the public roads,” hecomplained.Swanepoel also spoke of an instance

where three trucks traveling in the areawere blocked by a tent and said that nosigns had been placed to indicate thatthe road was closed.“On one occasion I witnessed three

he attended Maope HighSchool, Shibambo wasvocal in matters ofstudents’ rights, alwaysmaking sure that thestudents’ voice was heard.His life will be celebrated

Political battle raises eyebrows

Political parties are preparing forbattle again as we approachelection season. As the rulingparty strengthens their electioncampaign to ensure their returnin the next election, oppositionparties are also working hard tomake sure that they overtake theANC this election to take thegovernment from them.Various political parties recently

launched their manifestos, fillingthem with promises to addressurgent needs in thecommunities. All the parties arepromising better jobs for all,housing improvements andbetter services among a laundrylist of other things.The ANC is repeating the same

manifesto as last term, leavingvoters questioning theirdedication, although thephilosophy of ‘better the devil

you know’ is rife.Though most of the promises

were essentially the same, someof the parties differed somewhatfrom each other.With regards to jobs, voters are

unimpressed with the ANC for‘slandering’ them with ExpandedPublic Works Programmes’short-term and part-time jobsand apprenticeships instead ofproper jobs, saying that theyneed sustainable incomes fortheir families’ livelihoods.The DA, on the other hand, is

promising 6 million jobs, almostexactly the promise made byPresident Jacob Zuma when hecame into power five years ago.Meanwhile, the EFF is

promising to double the incomeof low-income earners andgrants recipients in order toaddress the society’s economicgrowth.With regards to tenders, the

ANC promises that thegovernment will control theprocess in order to do away withcorruption and will make surethat government employees donot benefit from the process.The DA says that it will prevent

politicians, governmentemployees, and friends andrelatives of the same frombenefitting from tenders, while theEFF promises to do away with theprocess entirely, proposing to puttheir government in charge of alljobs.These promises have got

analysts debating, some sayingthat it is good to ensure that onlythe deserving benefit from tenderswhile others doubted thegovernment’s ability to control alljobs. Analysts did not fail tomention that municipalities andgovernment departments acrossthe country have inexperiencedstaff due to nepotism and said thatservice delivery was compromisedbecause of tender irregularities.The DA has welcomed members

who abandoned the ANC ship infavour of their own, while the EFFis pleased to announce that theyare welcoming members left, rightand centre, from all politicalparties. “We spoke to the peopleand we are expecting many votesfrom South Africans who are indire need of change. People aretired of failing leadership and it istime for the EFF to take over anddeliver good services to thepeople,” said an EFFspokesperson.

The DA in Limpopo has accusedMogalakwena mayor ThlalefiMashamaite, of misusing taxpayers’money to hire 27 security guards.It is alleged that the security guards

were hired without following the properprocedures and, according to DAspokesperson Desiree van der Waltcost an estimated R1 million.Van der Walt backlogs on service

delivery and infrastructure maintenanceare still very much in evidence, andadded that the mayor was alsoimplicated in a KPMG report in thematter of R838 000 allegedly spent onANC T-shirts.“The DA has already laid a charge with

procedures were followed in theabovementioned cases.He accused the anonymous source of

providing false and inaccurateinformation with an agenda to destroyhis reputation.“I’ve already confronted him and am

taking the matter very seriously. I will notlet my name be dragged through themud like this,” he said.

Bela Bela’s Acting Municipal Manager,Morris Maluleka, has denied allegationsof tender irregularities which were madepublic by an anonymous source in lastweek’s issue of The BEAT.The source approached The BEAT

stating that correct procedure had notbeen followed in the case of two tendersin April 2013, involving the Bela BelaMunicipality @ Consulting and AkhileManagement and Consulting. Thetenders were each valued at R1.7million.The source further referred to the

supply chain management policy andindicated that according to the policy allrequirements in excess of R200 000 areto be procured by means of a formal

The Economic Freedom Fighters(EFF) invaded Bela Bela during theirWaterberg mini rally held in LesedingPark recently.It was clear that the EFF has a lot of

supporters in the area as theyassembled at the park to listen toLebogang Monageng, the EFFconveyer in the Waterberg.In his speech Monageng said that the

EFF will be helping their supporters tolive better lives with such methods asincreased pension grants andchildren’s grants, making sure that thetaxi drivers are given pay slips andbetter salaries for security personneland domestic workers, among others.“We are aware of the situation in Bela

Bela and the struggles of its peopleand we as the EFF are going to makesure that the municipality is runsmoothly and without the nepotism in

evidence now,” Monageng said. Headded that they plan to rename theZuma View section to the MalemaSection once they win.The campaign continued to the

location until they returned to the park.During the march they also registerednew recruits, including two whitepeople.In the meantime, EFF Commander in

Chief Julius Malema was expected tomake a visit to Bela Bela for thesecond time as part of his electioncampaign.“He will be here to seal the campaign

ahead of the upcoming nationalelection and is expected to addresspeople at Sunfa Stadium before goingon to Modimolle and Mookgophong.”On the same day COPE’s minority

supporters were also seen doing adoor-to-door campaign in the location,as well as celebtrating and dancingwith EFF members during the rally.

in school. Her name was Lorraine,and she was incredible. She wasbeautiful, and funny, and kind, andshe played several musicalinstruments beautifully, and shecould sing like an angel. When youlooked at her, when you spoke toher, she shone.She was a lighthouse. She never

needed to tell anyone how fantasticshe was – everyone just knew. Shewent ahead and did her own thing,and people just knew that this girlwas gifted.Of course, not everyone is

Lorraine.But we don’t need to be.

Remember how, last week, wementioned doing what you do, anddoing it well? That’s what you needto do. You need to be a lighthouse.You can be a lighthouse, even if yousecretly think that you’re more like alightning bug.If you love what you do.If you put all your effort into it,

make whatever it is your sole focuswhile you’re doing it, you will shine.If you find the thing that you’remeant to be doing (and everyonehas at least one thing that they’regood at, one thing that clearly saysthis is what you were made to do)and you pour your heart and soulinto it…you’ll never need to tellanyone how great you are.They’ll look at your work – and it

doesn’t matter whether you’re a filmstar or a plumber, a DJ or a streetsweeper – and see this person isgreat at what they do. This person,they will think to themselves, thisperson shines. This person loveswhat they’re doing.And the thing about lighthouses, of

course, is that they don’t make lightfor themselves. Lighthouses spilltheir light everywhere. They’regenerous with it, they light up thelandscape for miles around. Oftenthey’re the only visible landmark formiles and miles around.They’re made to be visible, painted

white and red, so that they caneasily be seen from sea, and theymake light so that they can be seenat night.If you find the thing you are meant

to do, you’ll turn yourself into alighthouse. You’ll brighten otherpeople’s lives the way my old schoolfriend brightened mine.It’s worth the effort.

In honour of Easter, we are using forour Food For Thought this month theEaster Sermon, preached by JohnDonne on March 28, 1619, in fourparts. The sermon remains one ofthe most beautiful and well-knownEaster sermons of all time, relevanteven today. The BEAT has taken theliberty of updating the English slightlyto make the text easier to under-stand. This is the continuation of lastweek’s Food for Thought, whichcontained the first part of the Ser-mon. This part can be understoodwithout reading that first.

Take a flat map, and here is East,and there is West, as far from eachother as two points can be, butreduce it to roundness (as the globeof the Earth, in fact, is) and East andWest touch each other, and are allone.So consider Man’s life aright, to be

In this, the circle, the twopoints meet – the womb and the graveare but one point, they make onestation; there is but a step from that tothis.This brought the custom among the

In the late afternoon of Tuesday, 8 April,a couple of Gifters Trucks and bakkiesarrived in Vaalwater.According to Emily Thomas from gift of

the Givers: “Nonstop rain caused majordamage to property and haswaterlogged roads in the WaterbergDistrict, which has been declared adisaster area by the municipality. On ourprevious visit to the area to do anassessment, our vehicle got stuck in themud and we had to wait 4 hours for atractor to come and pull us out. Gift ofthe Givers have been in closecommunication with the WaterbergFlood Disaster Management to identifyareas worst affected by the floods.”The rains persisted but the Gift of the
