Volgens ‘n lid van dié klub, me.Raelene du Piesanie, het ‘n besig-heid genaamd TOMS Shoes on-langs verskeie pare nuwe skoeneaan die klub geskenk om aan be-hoeftige skoolkinders uit te deel.Leerlinge van verskeie skole hetal die afgelopeweek van die skoe-ne ontvang.

Intussen gaan die klub ook ‘naksie hou om nie-bederfbare kosen ander benodigdhede soos toi-

letware vir behoeftiges in te sa-mel. Spesiale inkopie-trolliesgaan op 26 en 27 April by Carle-tonville Pick n Pay geplaas word.Inwonerswat die aksiewil onder-steun, kan danwarewat hulle wilskenk, in dié trollies plaas.

Van die toiletware wat ingesa-mel word, sal ook in spesialepakkies vir behoeftige skoolkin-ders geplaas word. Die Carleton-ville Rotariërklub gee al sedert2010 van dié pakkies by hoër-skole in Carletonville uit.

Fourmembers of one family died in oneof the most horrific accidents the areahas seen in some time.

On Friday night, April 11 at around19:30, a blue Toyota Avanza and a whi-teNissan,themodel ofwasunknownbyprinting time, collided on the Bankroad.

The accident had taken place justoutside Carletonville.

Although not a full head-on collision,the vehicles collided at high speeds andthe impact on both vehicles was severe,causing all three passengers and thedriver of the Avanza to die as a result.

Upon arrival,rescue workersmade a terriblediscovery whenthey found thefour dead peoplein the Avanza, onebeing a smallchild who hadsustained horrificinjuries.

“The baby wasaround two yearsof age,” said MsElsie Tshonte,spokesperson ofthe SAPS in thecluster.

Along with thebaby, the grand-mother, cousinand a friend of thesame family, allfrom Khutsong’sExtension 5, alsolost their lives.

The driver ofthe Nissan, Ms.Maryna Fourie,the school prin-cipal of Laer-skool Oos-Drie,was seriously in-jured and takento the Potchef-stroom Medicli-nic Hospital by

A man was wounded by a group of ar-med men, allegedly illegal immigrantsfrom Lesotho, the past weekend.

Although news about illegal immi-grants from Lesotho has become thenorm in Merafong, nothing they do isshocking anymore and the residents ofMerafong have been forced to makepeace with them taking over, robbing,stealing and raping all over the area ona seemingly regular basis.

The owner of the Khayelihle Tavernnear the Western Deep Level’s No.9hostel was about to start closing his ta-vern for the evening at around 22:15.Whilst carrying in chairs from the outs-ide, he was approached by four illegalBasothos, two armed with hand pis-tols.

“The men demanded the keys to thetavern from the owner, who refused tohand them over,” said Constable ElsieTshonte.

“He turnedaround, ranback into thetavern and exited through a back door.The owner was followed by one of the

Basothos who called out, threateninghim to turn back as he fired two shots.

Whilst being forcefully escorted backby the suspect who chased after him,the tavern-owner heard another fourgunshots go off inside the tavern ontheir way back.

Onhis return, he found that the otherthree suspects had run away, perhapsthinking their accomplice had beenshot in the chase that took place.

“One of the customers had, however,been shot through the finger and leg,”Tshonte said. Apparently one of theother armed suspects had instructed

all the customers to lie down on theground, but the man who was shot hadrefused, which is why they decided toshoot him.

The last suspect also fled, once he re-alised that his gang had left him be-hind.

They did not take anything at all.Constable Simphiwe Tshongoyi of

the Carletonville SAPS is investigatingthe case.

This week, one young Khutsong boysenselessly lost his life, whilst anotheris up for murder.Around six months ago, a group of

boys were walking home from church,when members of the infamous Casa-nova gang in Khutsong approachedthem.A fight broke out between the boys

and one particularly tough boy mana-ged to fend off the gangsters.What no one realised during the fight,

was that one of the gangsters droppedhis cell phone in the dust, where thefight took place.Last Sunday, April 6, two of the

“church boys” were playing soccer,when one of the Casanovas, AsandaDlamini and a fellow gang-member ap-proached him, demanding the cell pho-ne they had dropped during the fightmonths ago. Again a fight broke out bet-ween the boys and again the tough“churchboy”had theoverhandandsentthe gangsters home, tails between theirlegs.As if being beaten twice was not a les-

son enough, Dlamini approached the“church boy” for the last time.He was sitting alone on the step of a

local shop.Dlamini walked up to him, took out

a knife and started stabbing him in thehead and all over his body.Badly injured, the boy managed to go

home and get a knife as well. He retur-ned to finish off the boy who had at-tempted to kill him.The boys met up again, and in a vici-

ous knife-fight with several stab-wounds inflicted to both, Dlamini pas-sed away and the other boy was admit-ted to hospital with serious injuries.This gang-related fight took place,

despite the heavy police presence inKhutsong, placed there by the SAPS’sprovincial office for three months, aftermembersof theCasanovagangwerekil-led by community members last year.The heavy, daily presence of the Fly-

ing Squad, was said to have been put inplace to curb various offences, mainlythe gang activity the community hadbeen complaining about all along.After the murders, five people were

arrested, all claiming they are innocent.After a battle of 56 days to get bail andR35 000 later, they were released on ve-ry strict bail conditions.At the time themenwere arrested, the

investigating officer claimed the casewasstill under investigationand furtherarrests were to be made.Three weeks ago, for the first time

since the first arrests in mid-Decemberlast year, another five men were arre-sted for the murders.The Herald has been sent from pillar

topost trying to get details regarding the

arrests. A man lost his life because he did nothave cigarettes to share.

Mr Lawrence Kgotso was at Nongo’sTavern in Khutsong, having a couple ofdrinkswithhis friendswhenhewasap-proached by a man unknown to him.

“The man asked Kgotso if he had acigarette for him,” tells Constable Eve-lyn Matabane, spokesperson of theKhutsong SAPS. “He did not have a ci-garette and relayed this to the man whowas asking.”

The man was clearly unhappy withthis answer, and an argument brokeout between the two men. Kgotso pun-ched the man with a fist and knockedhim out, leaving him unconscious. Theman later regained consciousness, gotup and left the tavern.

Kgotso left the tavern later on, notknowing that the friends of the man hehad knocked out earlier were planningon taking revenge on him. He was follo-wed by the man’s friends who stabbed

him in the left side of his chest, killinghim.

One of the suspects was arrested andcharged with murder. He appeared inthe Khutsong Magistrates Court onMonday, April 14, was denied bail andremains in police custody. Police offi-cers are still looking for the other sus-pects in connection with this cruelmurder.

Last week the terrain of Blyvoor GoldMine was the site of much activity asrepresentatives of various governmentdepartments flocked to the mine to in-vestigate allegations of environmentalpollution.

The Herald reported earlier this ye-ar that the well-known environmenta-list, Mariette Liefferink, opened a caseagainst Blyvoor over its pollution ofthe area. If found guilty, Liefferinkwants Blyvoor to pay compensation tothose who are affected. The allegedpolluters must also remediate the de-graded and polluted areas and be de-clared incapable to acquire a miningright.

The case was later taken over by theEnvironmental Management Inspec-torate of the Department of Environ-mental Affairs, commonly known as

the “Green Scorpions”.Last week Wednesday, members of

this Inspectorate as well as represen-tatives of the National Nuclear Regula-tor (NNR), the Department of Mineralsand Energy, the Inspectorate of the De-partment of Water Affairs and the Tlo-kwe Local Municipality met at Blyvoorto gather possible evidence for this ca-se.

One of the issues that the group dis-covered was underground mine waterbeing pumped directly into a canalthat leads to the Wonderfonteinspruit.The investigators also spent some ti-me at the area from where mine tail-ings washed onto the side of the roadearlier this year.

“One could also see quite clearlyhow the special equipment of the NNRofficials picked up radioactivity at a si-te where some mine tailings spilled,”Liefferink, who also accompanied the

group, told the Herald afterwards.As part of the investigation, the

Green Scorpions also put special co-louring into sample areas of water todetermine the area of origin of the wa-ter. Various ground and water sampleswere also taken to be analysed.

“It is the first time ever that so manygovernment institutions got involvedin such an investigation. In the past,many people had been demoralised bythe reluctance of government to get in-volved in actions against pollution mi-nes. This is, for sure, a very heartening

step,” says Liefferink.As far as could be determined, the

results of the analysis of the samplestaken during last week’s visit will de-termined the further outcome of thecase as well as the time that it will takefor completion.

Although the results may lead to the-se samples becoming evidence in theupcoming court case against Blyvoor,an urgent interdict may still be obtai-ned if it is found that the mine is in-deed currently dangerously pollutingthe environment.

The Merafong City Local Municipalitysays that the problems experienced bya Kokosi resident at her house have ne-ver been brought to their attention.

The Herald recently reported thatMs Maria Peega (55), who lives inKhutsong Extension 1, complainedthat she has been struggling for yearsto get help with her crumbling house.

Although the municipality indicated

at the time of the Herald’s questionsabout the matter that the problemswould be investigated, a full answerwas only received last week.

“The municipality cannot find anyrecord of this complaint ever beenbrought to the attention of the munici-pality,” a municipal spokesman indi-cated.

“The property was transferred intothe name of the beneficiary in 1993 un-der title deed TL40058/93. The origi-nal Independent Development Trust(IDT) subsidy scheme only provided aserviced site, a foundation with a slaband a waterborne toilet. In 2000 interms of the new Consolidation Subsi-dy Scheme, a subsidy was approved bythe new government to build houses ontop of the slabs. The house was develo-ped during the project time. The pro-ject provided that the houses be finis-hed with cement based water proofing.

However, the owners could also optnot to use this finishing, but to plastertheir houses themselves. In this casethe owner opted to plasterthe house herself. The housewas completed in line withthe specifications. All topstructures fully compliedwith the engineering specifi-cations, and were certified bya professional engineer.

The allegations that the in-spector failed to pick up de-fects and that the house wasrickety from the start is un-founded.

All houses were subjectedto several inspections duringthe construction period aswell as a final retention in-spection three months aftercompletion. Any defects re-ported were recorded andcontractors had to rectify de-fects before the final retenti-on inspection could be sig-ned off. The house was in-spected on 2 April 2014,after the press enquiry and itwas found that it was in asound structural condition.The crack above the door isnormal in an area where mi-ne trebles occur regularly.The fact that the owner didnot plaster the house, as sheundertook to do, and that noor limited maintenance was

done since construction, also contri-buted to the crack.

Cracks were also identified at thebeam filling and it is normal for thebeam filling to crack if maintenance isnot done regularly. It has been foundthat the owner changed the doors inthe house and replaced the front doorof the house with lesser quality doors,which has not been treated correctly.To assist communities, National De-partment of Housing recently imple-mented a rectification programme forhouses constructed before the esta-blishment of the NHBRC. Houses withmaintenance needs or structural de-fects were identified and have beencorrected.

It is not known why this house wasnot included in that programme, sincethe municipality was not involved withthe implementation of the project. Themunicipality will report her case to theNational Department and request thather house be included,” the spokes-man said.

Developing sinkholes, leaking sewera-ges, crooked doors and crumblingwalls.These are only some of the problems

that residents of some of the new hou-ses at “Khutsong Extension 5” have toface. According to one of the residentsstaying at this residential area, DavidMokgethi (37), it was realised that the-re were many problems with the hou-ses soon after he moved in during No-vember last year. Since Mokgethi hassome plumbing knowledge, other resi-dents soon came to ask him for assis-tance. Most of the residents say thatthey were allowed to move into theirhouses even before signing “happy let-ters” to stop their houses from beingvandalised.Some of the problems many resi-

dents are experiencing, such as tapsare not yet fitted and loose washing ba-sins,may possibly be resulted from thenewownersmoving inbefore their hou-ses were complete.Various other problems are, howe-

ver, also leading to headaches, the resi-

dents say.AtMokgethi’s house, for instance, se-

veral doors have been fitted in such away that they cannot close. Large gapsalso appear on top of the doors in somehouses suffering from the same pro-blem. At more than one house the ce-mentmix used to build the houses alsoseem to consistmostly of sand.At thesehouses the walls literally start to crum-ble when they are touched too hard.“We do not know what is going on.

None of the doors in my house can clo-se,” one of the new home-owners, Mat-thews Majola, told the Herald. As a re-sult of this, Majola and his wife have noprivacy from their children staying inthe same home. At some houses, suchas house no. 5863, the water has alsonot yet been connected. At this house,a pipe that was supposed to convey wa-ter loosely sticks out from the ground,although a water meter has been fitted.Both the neighbouring houses to thisone do, however, have water. In additi-on, sewage leaks are also abundant.At house no. 5850 of Thomas Huma,

cracks started to appear in the groundnext to a manhole in his backyard in

August last year. A hole also started toappear in the hollow-sounding groundnext to the manhole. Huma fears thatit might lead to a sinkhole falling in onhis property. He is continually puttingdead grass in the hole to fill it up andsays that whenever water dams up inhis backyard, it disappears at the siteof the hole.“I am really scared of a sinkhole; and

went to the office of the contractors,who built the house, to complain. Theytell me that they will come, but then no-thing happens,” an upset Huma lamen-ted. “Many of the people staying hereare not happy. Draai koek om, trek die on-derste waspapier af en rol op met be-hulp van tweede stuk waspapier. Laatafkoel. Vou koek oop, smeer met vulselen rol weer op. Sif versiersuiker bo-oor.Vulsel: Meng 50 g elk sagte botter en

roomkaas met 250 ml versiersuiker enbietjie lemoensap.

Simnel cakePreheat oven to 160° C.In a bowl, beat 180 g each butter and

castor sugar until thick and creamy.Gradually beat in 3 eggs. Sift together180 g flour, 2 ml salt and 5 ml mixedspice and fold into creamed mixture.Fold in 180 g sultanas, 240 g currants,100 g mixed peel and 30 ml brandy orsherry. Spoon half of the mixture intoa greased and lined 200 mm-diametercake pan.Divide 500 g almond paste into three

por-tions - roll out one portion to 200mm-diameter round and place over themixture in the cake pan. Spoon remai-ning fruit mixture over; level surface.Bake at 160° C 3 – 3½ hours. Leave tocool in pan. Turnout, brushwithheatedapricot jam (50 g jam). Roll out secondportion of almond paste to 200 mm- di-ameter; place on top of cake. Crimp ed-ges with thumb and fore-finger to makean attractive, fluted edge and score a lat-tice pattern over the top of the cake witha sharp knife. Roll the remaining thirdof the almond paste into eight equal-si-zed balls; brush cake with 1 egg-white(lightly frothed). The Merafong City Local Municipality has confir-med that it has opened a criminal case with re-gard to the water taps being put up in some ofKhutsong’s informal housing areas.The Herald recently reported that hundreds of

mysterious taps have been installed inyards in squatter areas such as Khuts-ong’s T-Section during March. Resi-dents admitted that they paid betweenR150 to R200 to theman who installedthe taps. Families who could not affordthis money, did not receive a tap.According to rumour, the taps were

made up of material that had been sto-len at building sites in the new “Exten-sion 5” housing area between Oberhol-

zer and Welverdiend. “On the issue of the illegaltaps and connections, a case had been opened atthe Khutsong SAPS. It was determined that a pri-vate contractor made the illegal connections,” amunicipal spokesman indicated last week.No further informationwas available at the time
