    by initials).

    Alphabetize reference list entries the last

    name of the first author of each work.

    Capitalize only the first letter of the first word of

    a title and subtitle, the first word after a colon or

    a dash in the title, and proper nouns. Do notcapitalize the first letter of the second word in a

    hyphenated compound word.

    Making the references list

    Identify a type source: Is it a book? A journal article?

    A webpage?

    Find a sample of citing this type of source in the textbook

    or in the OWL APA Guide.

    Mirror the sample.

    Make sure that the entries are listed in the alphabetical

    order and the subsequent lines are indented (Recall

    References: basics).

    APA is a complex system of citation, which isdifficult to keep in mind. When compiling the

    reference list, the strategy below might be useful:

    Whenever you use a source, provide in parenthesis:

    Short Quotations

    If you are directly quoting from a work, you will need toinclude the author, year of publication, and the pagenumber for the reference (preceded by "p."). Introducethe quotation with a signal phrase that includes theauthor's last name followed by the date of publication inparentheses.

    Long Quotations

    Place direct quotations longer than 40 words in a free-standingblock of typewritten lines, and omit quotation marks. Start thequotation on a new line, indented five spaces from the leftmargin. Type the entire quotation on the new margin, and indentthe first line of any subsequent paragraph within the quotationfive spaces from the new margin. Maintain double-spacing

    throughout. The parenthetical citation should come after theclosing punctuation mark.

    Jones's (1998) study found the following:

    Students often had difficulty using APA

    style, especially when it was their firsttime citing sources. This difficulty could be

    attributed to the fact that many students

    failed to purchase a style manual or to ask

    their teacher for help. (p. 199)

    Basic Form

    APA style dictates that authors are named last namefollowed by initials; publication year goes betweenparentheses, followed by a period. The title of thearticle is in sentence-case, meaning only the first

    word and proper nouns in the title are capitalized. Theperiodical title is run in title case, and is followed bythe volume number which, with the title, is alsoitalicized or underlined.
