Annual Report -2018-
On behalf of the Board, I am very pleased to report
that, once again, the Heath Alliance for Care family
—Heath Village and Canterbury Village—had a very
successful year. Heath Village welcomed 48 new
residents, completed improvements to our facilities
and resident apartments, and held several fun-filled
special events.
Most exciting this year, however, was the long awaited
groundbreaking for the new Health Care Center and
Rehabilitation Facility at Heath Village West. Held in
August, the event was a joyous occasion. The 92,000
square foot Center will provide our residents and
seniors living throughout the region with access to
state-of-the-art, cutting edge skilled nursing care
and rehabilitation services. It is also designed to
have a patient centered focus the likes of which has
never been seen. Construction is estimated to take
approximately 18 months, and the Board and I are
already looking forward to the ribbon cutting.
The Friendship Fund is always at the heart of our
fundraising efforts. This year $109,000 was raised for
the Friendship Fund. In addition, the Fund received
two very generous, one-time only, donations equaling
$815,000 bringing the total amount raised this year
to $924,000. The combined balance of the Friendship
Fund and the Heath Village Gift Annuity Fund is
approximately $3.8 million.
There is always something to celebrate at our
communities, and this year was no exception.
More than 300 people attended our annual Family Day
event. The Board enjoyed celebrating our long-term
residents at an Anniversary Reception, and having the
opportunity to get to know all of the residents better
at the Summer Social. We are excited to announce
that we have added pickleball and a Heath Village
choir to our extensive list of activities.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my
fellow Board members for their time and expertise.
I have been very blessed to be able to serve for so
many years on the Board. I am proud to work with
dedicated individuals who share my commitment to
providing our residents with a living environment that
fosters a meaningful life with security, dignity, and
personal and spiritual well-being.
Finally, on behalf of the Board, I would like to
commend Patrick Brady for his 30 years of service and
dedication to Heath Village. During his long tenure,
he has spearheaded and overseen many changes at
Heath Village. He has assembled an extremely capable
management team and a most caring staff who share
his dedication and commitment to our residents.
Together they have been instrumental in helping
Heath Village and Canterbury Village maintain
such wonderful reputations for providing excellent
care and services. Thank you Pat for your vision
and leadership.
I look forward to continuing to work with our
residents, the staff and the entire community in the
coming year.

The year 2018 marked the 52nd year of Heath Village
providing housing and care for our residents. I am
pleased to report that the year was a great one
that included many improvements and additions to
our community.
At Hillside, we broke ground and completed a new
two-unit building. The apartments have great scenic
views and make a wonderful addition to our campus.
We look forward to welcoming our new residents.
In addition, the year included the renovation or
conversion of more than 23 apartments. We held a
grand reopening of our board room, which benefitted
from several upgrades and improvements.
Administration expended much energy during 2018
on the planning of Heath Village West, which will
include a new and exciting Health Care Center and
Rehabilitation Facility as well as the development of a
140 independent living cottage community.
The Heath Village West planning and hard work
culminated this year with a groundbreaking for the much
anticipated new Health Care Center and Rehabilitation
Facility on Friday, August 3, 2018. The celebration
included a thoughtful invocation delivered by Heath
Village founder and resident, The Reverend Clarence
W. Sickles, and was attended by several dignitaries.
It was a wonderful day for our community.
This year we held our 30th Annual Friendship Fund
Benefit Gala at which we raised more than $73,000.
Our 2018 fundraising efforts produced nearly
$924,000 for the Heath Village Friendship Fund.
We commend the Village’s Residents’ Council for
their continued energy and suggestions on how to
improve life and services at the Village. Since the very
beginning, they have played a vital role in making our
community a unique one.
On a final and more personal note, as I celebrate
my 30th year at Heath Village, I would like to thank
the Board of Trustees for their guidance, support
and continued trust in me. It has been a wonderful
experience working together with the Board, the staff
and the residents to make Heath Village the warm and
wonderful community it is today.
I am excited to work with all of our partners on the
development of Heath Village West and to see
what other new opportunities the future holds for
Heath Village.

Within months of Heath Village’s grand opening in 1966, the Residents’ Council
was established. Why? Because residents soon wanted to establish a library, then
a gift shoppe, followed by a whole host of new activities. The Council has always
played an important role in growing our community.
The Residents’ Council consists of nine members. Elections are held annually
in November and terms begin in January. Terms are three years long and are
staggered to allow for continuity. Any resident who has lived at Heath Village
since July 1 of the current year is eligible to run for a position on the Council.
The 2018 Executive Board includes Barbara Hall, President; Don Buck, Vice
President and coordinator of the nominating committee; Clif Heidel, Treasurer and
coordinator of the Employee Appreciation Fund; and Marion Cosman, Secretary.
Additionally, Frank Reitz, who was appointed by the Executive Director to be the
resident liaison on the Board of Trustees, serves as a non-voting member of both
the Residents’ Council as well as the Heath Village Board of Trustees and attends
each meeting to help convey important decisions and ideas to both Boards.
Meetings are also attended by a member of the Board of Trustees, Patrick Brady,
Executive Director and Mary Ellen Bove, Chief Operating Officer.
Council members chair one of five subcommittees: Newcomers (Susan Sumner),
Dining (Janet Moss), Friendly Visitors (Erna Dietz), Maintenance and Operations
(Michael Aron) and Special Events (currently open and under review).
The Council and the subcommittees meet ten times a year. They do not meet
during the months of July and August. Subcommittee meetings are open to the
residents who are encouraged to attend and share their thoughts.
It has been a very positive year at the Village, and I wish to thank all those
who participated.

CANTERBURY VILLAGE
Canterbury Village, our 53 resident assisted living
community in West Orange, NJ, continued to flourish in
2018. While resident census experienced a brief decline in
the first quarter of the year, it bounced back by early spring
and we maintained a strong census for the remainder of
the year.
Several facility improvements for resident safety and
security were completed this year. Upgrades to the
WanderGuard® system were completed as well as the
installation of carbon monoxide detectors outside the
boiler rooms, which are now programmed into our fire
alarm system.
Over the past eight years, we have been fortunate to
partner with Montclair State University’s Service Learning
Program. The student volunteers enrolled in this program
participate in our activities and interact with our residents.
This year we have seen the number of volunteers coming to
Canterbury increase by 50%.
One of our community’s true strengths is its creative and
ever changing activities program.
This year our residents had the
opportunity to enjoy more than
30 special events including theme
parties, plays, concerts and trips. In
response to our residents’ love for
the beach, several day trips to Sandy
Hook were taken this summer.
A special birthday celebration was
held for a resident’s 103rd birthday –
we plan to do the same for her 104th!
Canterbury residents were excited
to participate in the Kean University
Playwright showcase this year.
Our residents wrote one act plays
in collaboration with the students.
The University students then returned to perform the
plays for the residents, their families and friends. The
experience was greatly enjoyed by residents, their
families and students alike.
This year residents also enjoyed enhancements to
our dining program. Outdoor courtyard dining for
breakfast and lunch was introduced this spring and
summer and was met with great enthusiasm. If the
sun is shining, you can see residents enjoying their
meals outdoors.
In the coming year, we look forward to building on
2018’s achievements and finding new opportunities
to ensure good health and happiness for the residents
we serve.
