Welcome to North TexasTexas, the ‘Lone Star State,’ is the second-largest state in the USA, covering more than695,676 sq km (268,600 sq miles). Texas’ history has been shaped by the fact that it has beenpart of six independent countries: Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confed-eracy, and the United States. More than 300 years ago the first European explorers enteredthe region, and Texas became a province of the Spanish colony of New Spain. In 1821, Mexicowon it’s independence from Spain, and the province of Texas became part of the United Statesof Mexico. Texas then made a dramatic break from Mexico in 1836 and joined the United Statesin 1846 after a decade of independence. Except for briefly joining the Confederacy during theCivil War, Texas has been a state in the Union for over 150 years.

Western in spirit, Fort Worth was established as a military encampment in 1849, one of 10fortifications designed to protect settlers from the Plains Indians. The Chisholm Trail passedthrough its streets, terminating at the Fort Worth Stockyards, the economic base for the cattleindustry in West Texas. Dallas was founded in 1841 as a trading post and has grown into animportant center for commerce and fashion. It is known globally as a modern sophisticatedcity and a center for telecommunications, banking, and transportation.

The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex encompasses the metropolitan divisions ofDallas–Plano–Irving and Fort Worth–Arlington, within the U.S. state of Texas.The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex is officially known as the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington Metropolitan Area, a title designated by the U.S. Census as of 2003and consists of twelve counties in North Texas.

According to the U.S. Census 2000, the metropolitan area had a population of5.1 million (though a July 1, 2004 estimate placed the population at 5.7 million).The Dallas Business Journal reported in February of 2005 that the populationhad topped 6 million. The Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington MSA is the fifth largestmetropolitan area in the U.S.

Dallas and its suburbs have one of the highest concentrations of corporateheadquarters in the United States. As such, one of the largest industries in theDallas area is conducting business. For example, with Texas Instruments,EDS, Perot Systems, i2, Exxon Mobile, and other companies based in Dallas,the Metroplex contains the largest information technology industry in the state.

On the other end of the business spectrum, and on the other side of the Metroplex,the Texas farming and ranching industry is based in Fort Worth. Brinker Interna-tional and Dallas Independent School District are the largest companies in theMetroplex. Several major defense manufacturers, including Lockheed Martin,Bell Helicopter, Textron, and Raytheon maintain significant operations in themetroplex (www.wikipedia.org).

Demographics and Ethnicity

North Texas has become an international center where the energy offered by NewAmericans sustains the economy and revitalizes neighborhoods. Forty percent ofour residents are immigrants (foreign born and their children) and in 26.3% ofmetroplex homes, English is not the language spoken. While the City of Dallascontinues to lose white population, its elderly residents are fortified by youthfulHispanic families with a large number of children. Immigrants from Mexico nowaccount for nearly three-fourths of the city’s foreign-born population, and at thesame time, the region is an important gateway for workers and families from Eastand Southeast Asia. A large percentage of our most highly educated employees areimmigrants.

Drinking in TexasIt is the state law that no one under the age of 21 can consumer, purchase, orpossess alcohol. Those who are found possessing alcohol can be fined and/orarrested. It is also illegal to drink while driving a motor vehicle or to drive while drunk.The consequence of doing so can also lead to being put under arrest and/or fined.

Beer, wine, and other forms of alcohol are not sold in all areas of the metroplex.The parts of the city where they are not available are called ‘dry’. Sometimesbeer and wine are sold, but not other forms of alcohol. Restaurants located in‘dry’ areas may ask you to ‘join a club’, which makes it legal for them to sell youan alcoholic drink with your food.

Don’t Mess With Texas

EducationAll resident children, regardless of legal status, can and must attend school.The U.S. provides children and adolescents with free education from elementaryschool through high school and children from the ages 5 to 16 are required bylaw to be enrolled in school. Not only must children enroll in school, they mustattend. Truancy is punishable by law and parents are responsible to see thattheir children go to school through the age of 16. You have the choice of eithersending your children to public school, to private school, or to educate them athome (home schooling). Certain restrictions apply to home schooling. Formore information visit www.tea.state.tx.us/home.school.

It is important to enroll your children in a schoolwithin your area as soon as possible. Proof ofresidence, such as a lease or mail bearingyour address is required, but children may beenrolled for 30 days without such proof. Schooldistricts do not always follow the same bordersas cities, so you should check first beforeassuming that your child will attend the closestschool to your residence. To avoid difficulty inenrolling children who may be delayed injoining the family, when signing a lease for anapartment, include the names of all childrenin the family. Free lunch is available for low-income students. Contact your local schooldistrict in the list below to learn more, or godirectly to the school to enroll your child.

All sales and consumption of alcohol will terminate as indicated by Texas AlcoholBeverage Commission (TABC): Sunday through Friday by 12 midnight, Saturday by1:00 am (Sunday morning) — unless otherwise indicated by law. TABC law prohibitsthe sale of alcohol before 12:00 noon on Sunday. Alcoholic beverages other thanbeer or wine may not be purchased on Sunday. Liquor stores close at 9:00 pm.

Smoking in TexasIt is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 years old to consume or purchase tobaccoproducts of any kind. Those who break this law may be fined. Smoking is alsoprohibited in many restaurants, schools, and other administrative buildings.

Community CollegesCommunity Colleges or Junior Colleges are two-year traditional schools, offeringprograms leading to the Associate’s Degree. Transferable degrees, vocationaltraining, certificate courses, and community and continuing education are alsooffered. Adult Education / GEDEducation is not limited to youth. A General Educational Development (GED)certificate serves as an alternative to a high school diploma. To obtain your GED,you must pass 5 exams that deal with the areas of: reading, writing, socialstudies, science, and mathematics. Many local schools and community collegesoffer courses that count towards the GED and most of them are free or low cost.

Emergencies - 911In an emergency, when you need Police/Fire/Ambulance dial 9-1-1 and wait forthe operator. Tell the operator what your emergency is (police? fire? ambulance?).If you do not speak English, tell the operator the language you speak. Theoperator may add-on an interpreter. In this case you will hear a clicking noise.Do NOT hang up. Stay on the phone and be calm. Give the operator your name,phone number, and address where help is needed. Stay on the line as long asyou can and answer all questions.

Non Emergencies - 311Dial 3-1-1 to make non-emergency requests for city services, such as hazardouspotholes, stray animals, or traffic signal malfunctions.

Learning English (ESL—English as a Second Language)There are over 300 centers in North Texas that offer classes to those who are learningEnglish, including many of local public libraries (see pagexxxx). DFW InternationalCommunity Alliance has produced an extensive booklet entitled Guide to EnglishClasses (ESL) for Adults, which is available at all local libraries and is downloadablefrom the DFW International website at www.dfwinternational.org

EmploymentTo improve your chances in finding a job you can:• Look under “Classifieds” or the “Employment” sections of your local newspaper• Look for “Help Wanted” signs in the windows of businesses or stores• Go to or call the Employment or Human Resources office in your area

Each worker, regardless of whether he is a legal resident or not, enjoys thesame rights. Violations should be reported to the Equal Opportunity Commissionat 214-253-2700. These rights include:

Health care is very expensive in the United States and as a result many buy healthinsurance. Health care is very expensive in the United States and as a result manybuy health insurance. Some employers may offer health insurance as a benefit totheir employees and pay the entire premium while others only pay part of the fee.However, some employers (especially small business) may not offer to pay any ofyour health insurance fees. It is important to ask questions so you will not miss freebenefits for you and your family because you fail to fill out the proper forms.

If you have Insurance it is always better to call the doctor or hospital to knowwhether it is within the network of your insurance plan. There you have to pay thedeductible according to the insurance plan.

Medicaid is a federal/state joined program for people with low incomes. Thereare certain criteria that you have to meet in order to see if you qualify for Medicaid.

Medicare is a similar health insurance program for people aged 65 or older, andpeople under age 65 with certain disabilities. Only citizens and permanentresidents of USA are eligible for Medicare if they worked for at least 10 years in

Garbage collection is a service that is provided by each city. If you live in an apartment,ask your landlord for more information. If you live in a house, your city can provideyou with their schedule. Bulk trash pickup (large items, trimmings from trees, etc.)varies from town to town. In the same way, recycling varies from city to city.

Anyone can go to these public hospitals and receive medical care. Manyneighborhood clinics run by the county or churches to provide for the medical needsof people with limited funds.

DFW International Community Alliance has produced a Guide to Economical HealthCare (bilingual) that lists all the low-cost clinics. It is available fromwww.dfwinternational.org/Resource_Center. There are also privately run emergencyor stand-alone clinics.

PharmaciesIn the North Texas metroplex, you can find a pharmacy inside large supermarketssuch as Albertsons, Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Tom Thumb. Two national pharmacychains - Walgreens and CVS - operate across the metroplex, and some of these areopen 24 hours a day. In all these stores you can get over the counter medicineswithout a prescription. For other medicines you have to present a prescription fromyour doctor. If you have insurance you may pay a reduced price for the medication. Itusually takes 15 to 30 minutes to fill a prescription, but drive-through pharmaciespermit you to drop off your physician’s slip, run an errand in that area, and return topick up your medications without leaving your car.

In the US most retailers close on Thanksgiving and Christmas, while they areopen all other holidays. Larger private businesses tend to observe most of theten federal holidays, and the day after Thanksgiving. Smaller businesses oftenobserve only the “big six” holidays (New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, IndependenceDay, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas).

Looking for an ApartmentThere are many resources that may allow you to find an apartment such as: localnewspapers, apartment magazines, online resources, or direct visits. Free Apartmentguides can be found at grocery stores. Some rentals include utility fees (water,electricity, trash disposal, gas, cable, DSL, etc.) while others do not. When utilitiesare included, renters often have less control over the heat (in winter months) and theair conditioning (in summer months). Phone is usually not included, althoughpublic telephones are often centrally located in the less expensive apartments. Youwill also be required to pay a security deposit, an amount paid in advance in thecase that any damages occur to the apartment while you are living in it.

Looking for a HouseWhen considering buying or renting a house, the process is quite similar to thatmentioned above, however most buyers use a real estate agent to assist them.

Discrimination in housing is unacceptable and you should be aware of the wayyou are being treated and whether or not you are being treated unfairly so thatproper action can be taken if the case is so. It is against the law for landlords torefuse to rent to you because of any of the following: your skin color, your countryof origin, your religion, your gender, a physical or mental disability, your familystatus (married, single, divorced, widowed, etc).

In the case that you are experiencing housing discrimination, you should contactthe U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) toll free at 1-800- 669-9777.

UtilitiesNo single company has a monopoly for electric/gas service. Shop around to findone that suits your needs and offers the best rates. A helpful website provided bythe Texas Utility Commission which helps consumers choose their providerbased on price per kilowatt hour is found at www.powertochoose.org

US post offices are government buildings and are designated by large Americanflags on flagpoles out front. Many are open on Saturdays, but the hours areirregular and you should check with the one closest to you. A few post offices areopen 24 hours.

US mail is not the same thing as UPS, FedEx, or DHL, which are private mailcompanies. Most post offices can rent mailboxes for a yearly fee.

Mail is delivered to one’s residence. If you will be away for more than a few days,mail can be held at the post office until your return.

Stamps can be purchased at the post office or online at http://shop.usps.com.Some supermarkets also sell stamps at the regular price, either at the checkoutlane, or at Customer Service.

Mail centers are for-profit businesses not connected with the US Postal Service.They offer many services such as wrapping your gift and packing it professionally toprevent damage in shipping. When they sell stamps or ship via US Postal Service,they add a fee for their services.

Debit CardDebit cards are also known as check cards. Debit cards look like credit cards orATM (automated teller machine) cards, but operate like cash or a personalcheck. Debit cards are different from credit cards and are often easier to obtain.While a credit card is a way to “pay later”, a debit card is a way to “pay now”.When you use a debit card, your money is quickly deducted from your checkingor savings account.

Credit CardA credit card is a type of loan. Each month, the credit card user is sent a statementindicating the purchases undertaken with the card, and the total amount owed. Thecardholder must then pay a minimum proportion of the bill by a due date. If the credit

card bill is paid in full each month, no interest is charged. However, interest isextremely high when the full bill is not paid. Some cards have a small annual fee,but most are free.

ATM CardYou can withdraw money from your bank account by writing a personal checks orby using an ATM card. An ATM card will allow you to access your account atanytime from any ATM machine. There may be a small charge.

Bank AccountBy creating a bank account, you will be able to put all of your savings in a safe placeand you can have access to it any time. There are two main types of bank accounts:a savings account and checking account. A savings account is where you can earninterest on your money, while a checking account is used for paying bills.

Requirements to open a Bank AccountMost banks require two identification forms; one that contains a picture of theperson opening the account, including a driver’s license, passport, military ID,Mexican Matrícula consular or other non-driver, government issued ID. Thesecond form of identification can include a Social Security Number card, a majorcredit card, a bank issued credit or debit card, a student ID, a company-issuedID, or an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number).

Credit scoreA credit score is a number based on a person’s credit report that is used torepresent that person’s creditworthiness, or how likely the person is to repayhis/her debts. Lending institutions use this score to determine the potential riskof borrowers, and helps lenders establish rates, terms, and credit limits.

Obtaining a Credit CardCredit cards allow you to make purchases and pay for them later. Banks, stores,and gas stations as well as major companies like MasterCard and Visa can issueyou a credit card. Each month you will get a bill in the mail with the list of purchasesthat you have made and the payment amount that you will have to pay. Keep in mindthat you should be careful when giving your credit card or credit card number toothers, especially over the phone or via the Internet. Others could use your creditcard number to make a purchase and you would have to pay the bill.

IRAAn Individual Retirement Account is an investment retirement plan that providessome tax advantages for retirement savings. There are different types of IRAs.

Main differences among the various types of accounts include contributionsmade “after-tax” and “before-tax”. The account can be sponsored or provided byan employer or be self-provided. Family ViolenceIf a spouse, partner, or youth assaults a family member repeated, one shouldcall the police to make an offense report and ask the officer to help him or herto obtain a Protective Order. The only documents necessary for the ProtectiveOrder are a valid I.D. or valid driver’s license and the abusers complete name,address and date of birth. The court will order the abuser not to commit furtheracts of violence, will direct the abuser to leave the family household, and willdirect him not to interfere with the children or any property.

Police

Most cities require residents to register their dogs and animals. The law alsorequires you to be a ‘pooper scooper’ and pick up your pet’s waste. Some apartmentsdo not permit residents to have pets or requre a pet deposit. The law requires allanimals to be restrained within a fenced yard or structure, and by a leash whenaccompanying the owner. It is against the law to be cruel to your pet.

Complaints about animal noise, stray animals, dog bites and animal crueltymay be reported by calling 311.

Dogs and cats may be adopted from the SPCA (Society for the Prevention ofCruelty to Animals). Animals adopted will be sterilized, vaccinated and registered.The SPCA and Dallas Animal Services may be reached at 214-670-6848 and214-670-8248. Lost pets may be reported to 214-670-1965 or 214-670-8389.

Women’s shelters may provide a room and food for a woman and her childrenfor about 4 to 6 weeks all free of charge and can help her obtain the ProtectiveOrder, file application for food stamps, housing, job training or job placement.

The woman will not lose custody of her children just because she fled theassaults. The case will be settled in court and the judge will be the one todetermine who will be granted custody of the children. Police officers areconcerned about the crime being committed against the woman and will notarrest her because she is undocumented. However, once any individual isjailed, he or she runs a serious risk of being checked for residency or citizenshipstatus by Homeland Security.

How to get out of jailThe usual way to get someone out of jail is by “posting bail”. Bail is cash or acash equivalent that an arrested person gives to a court to ensure that he willappear in court when ordered to do so. If the defendant appears in court at theproper time, the court refunds the bail. If the defendant does not show up, thecourt keeps the bail and issues a warrant for the defendant’s arrest.

If you are stopped by the policeIf you are stopped by the police while driving, stay in your car and wait until theofficer asks for your I.D. Remember, signing a ticket does not mean that you areguilty. It just means that you agree to go to the court and take care of the ticket. The judge or the jury will determine if you are guilty or innocent. If you are stopped by the police while walking, do not put your hands in yourpockets. Do not hold anything in your hands. Do not try to come close to theofficer. Answer his or her questions.

Regardless of one’s citizenship or legal status, all residents have the right to berespected by the authorities. To enter your home, police must bring an arrestorder, and to search it an order signed by a judge is required. In the USA, if youare stopped by the police, your rights include:

• Making phone calls• Asking for assistance from your country’s Consulate• Remaining silent and not incriminate yourself• Consulting a lawyer, and having a lawyer with you during all

interrogations. If you do not have funds to pay a lawyer, the court willprovide one.

• Access to an interpreter, if you do not speak English

BazaarBazaars are enclosed markets with smallshops, oftentimes owned by immigrants,offering clothing, food, shoes, and misc.merchandise. They’re like an permanentindoor shopping fair, and are popular withimmigrants of many ethnicities.

Consignment ShopsConsignment shops are resale stores thatare privately owned. These are places whereone can find designer clothing that is gently worn by the previous owner or notworn at all. Resale stores are a great place to find a bargain, and in America theyare a very acceptable way of finding clothing and do not necessarily denotepoverty.

Convenience storesMany “convenience” stores, that is, establishments carrying frequently purchasedproducts such as milk, soft drinks, snacks, newspapers/magazines, andcigarettes, are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Craig’s ListCraig’s list is an online service that offers free classified advertisements forused furniture, musical instruments, jobs, internships, housing, and pets.Prices are great.

Discount Shopping and SalesNorth Texas is known for its one-stop shopping and numerous clothing outletsand stores. Merchandise in discount stores here is usually marked with theoriginal price and then the reduced price (10% to 50% off the original) or isdiscounted because sales are made in bulk. Clothing and household goodsare available at discounted prices from TJ Max, Marshall’s, and Ross.Warehouse shopping for bulk purchases of food, furniture and clothing areavailable at Costco and Sam’s Club. Outlet malls are shopping areas filled withnumerous special stores from major names in manufacturing where all themerchandise featured from that line is discounted. These are located in suburbsfar from the downtown metropolitan areas.

Flea MarketA flea market is a place where vendors come to sell or trade their goods. Thegoods are usually inexpensive and range in quality. The vast majority of fleamarkets sell goods that are second-hand.

Garage saleA garage sale, also called a “yard sale”, “moving sale”, or “junk sale”, is aninformal, irregularly scheduled event for the sale of used goods by privateindividuals, in which “block sales” are allowed, so that sellers are not requiredto obtain business licenses or collect sales tax. Garage sales occur mostfrequently in suburban areas on good-weather weekends, and usually havedesignated hours for the sale. Some DFW yard sale information is on http://dallas.craigslist.org/gms/

Resale StoresResale stores areas a great place to find pre-owned clothing, toys, books,household goods, and furniture. Also called thrift shops, consignment shopsand second-hand stores, many are businesses operated by a charitableorganization for the purpose of fundraising. Goodwill and Salvation Army are themain charitable resale stores, where donated items are resold by the store atcheap prices.

Taxes on purchased itemsThere is an 8.25% state tax on most goods and services, excluding prescriptionmedicines and food. Sales tax is different in each city—but generally between 8and 9 percent. Some of that money goes to the state and some to the localgovernment.

Tax Refund for International VisitorsBefore leaving Texas and the USA, international visitors may request a sales taxrefund. To qualify for a Texas Sales Tax refund, the following must be presentedat one of the two TaxFree Shopping, Ltd service centers: Passport, I-94, U.S.visa, flight tickets showing journey from Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas to your legalresidence outside of the United States, and original sales receipts and purchaseditems. Items must be purchased in Texas within 30 days of departure andpurchases must be taken with you when you depart Texas and the USA. Not allstores participate in the Texas Sales Tax refund program. Those that do arelisted on the website www.taxfreetexas.com.

The law requires that you obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) that will begiven to you by the U.S. Government. This number will help the government keeptrack of how much money you are earning and base benefits you will receive onthe records of your earnings. It will also serve as another way for organizationssuch as schools, hospitals, landlords, banks, etc to identify you. The SocialSecurity Administration is responsible for issuing Social Security Numbers tonew immigrants.

If you do not speak English, the Social Security office can provide you will aninterpreter free of charge. The Social Security website can provide you with allthe information that you will need and is offered in 14 different languages.

Local CallsTo make local call you can use a payphone or your own telephone by dialing thearea code first then the number. Payphone charges vary and are subject tochange. Contact your local operator by dialing “0” for more information.

Long Distance CallsTo make a long distance calls from your home, you may wish to select a longdistance carrier. An operator can assist you with long distance service providers.You can also make long distance calls from a payphone and surcharges mayvary based on where you are calling. You may also choose to make a collect

call. In this case the fees are charged to the person receiving the call, but only ifhe or she agrees to accept the charges.

Phone cardsA more affordable way to make long distance and international calls buypurchasing a phone cards. They can be bought at local convenience stores andethnic grocery stores. You can buy a card based on the place you are calling.

Cell PhonesCell phone rates are usually less expensive than a residential phone. The ratesand programs vary greatly and sometimes lengthy service agreements arerequired. Also, some have special rates for international useor if they acceptemails and have internet access. It is important to search the various kinds ofmobile service to select the correct one for you. Cell service is very competitivehere and sales people may be very aggressive to get your business.

Telemarketing Phone CallsMany companies try; to sell you products or servies over the phone by callingyour residence. This is called ‘telemarketing’ and can be an annoyance,especially during dinner time in the evening.

The National Do No Call Registry gives you choice about whether to receivetelemarketing calls at home. To register your number visit www.donotcall.govand most telemarketers will eventually stop calling your number. The NationalDo Not Call Registry is managed by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), thenation’s consumber protection agency.

Another way to stop these interruptive calls is to say ‘Please remove me fromyour list’. Federal regulations require the called not to bother you again.

Tipping in the United States is theoretically optional, but has become so ingrainedin the culture that it is considered mandatory in many cases. Because of thewide variety of professions, in addition to the varying percentages and amountswhich are expected of each profession, tipping can be confusing. These aresome general guidelines:

• Waiters/Waitresses: 15-20% is generally accepted as a standard tip for goodservice, though higher tips (>20%) are common for exceptional service. Withlarge parties (8 persons or more), an automatic 15–20% tip is sometimesadded to the check.

• Hairdressers/Barbers: 10%-20%• Pizza (and other food) delivery-persons: 10% of total, at least $3. In most cases,

the delivery driver pays for his or her fuel. Many companies use contractorswho receive no hourly wage.

Tipping

AutomobilesMost people rely on cars to move them about the vast area of the metroplex. Inparts of the metroplex, people tend to drive aggressively and very fast. Themetroplex freeway system continues to grow. Some basic rules specific to thisregion are:• HOV lanes (High Occupancy Vehicles) are only for cars with two or more

occupants and motorcycles.• Normally, it is permitted to turn right on a red light.• Traffic exiting the highway is not required to yield to traffic using the access

(side) roads.

Texas residents who own a motor vehicle must register it yearly and pay a fee. Arenewal form arrives by mail in the following years. Vehicles must also beinspected each year at registered inspection stations, but no reminder is mailed.Both of these programs provide a sticker for the front car window that indicatesthat the car has been registered and inspected.

When you go to register a car, you must provide proof that the car has liabilityinsurance. If you are found at fault in an accident, liability insurance pays for theinjury and property damage expenses of the third party involved in the accident.Buying car insurance is like making any other purchase,and it is important tocheck with various companies to get the best price.

Each city has different procedures for traffic tickets. It is important to try to readthe tiny details on the ticket to know how to respond. Many Texas cities permitdrivers who have traffic tickets for speeding or similar offenses to take a DefensiveDriving Course. This class, either online via computer or in the usual format,can remove the ticket from your driving record. The benefit is that the rates paidfor car insurance do not go up due to the offense.

ParkingIt is against the law in most areas to park a car on the front grass of a home or onthe grass of a park. Cars parked in areas marked ‘No Parking’ may be towed toanother site, and the owner must pay a high fee to regain use of his or her car.

Seat BeltsSeat belts are required to be worn by all who ride in the front seat of a movingvehicle. Children younger than 4 or shorter than 36 inches must be in a child-safety seat. Children under 12 must wear seatbelts regardless of where theysit. Violations can result in fines.

Air Bag SafetyIt is dangerous for short people—children or adults—to be in the right front(passenger side) of a car that has passenger side air bags. The back seat isalways safer for children under age of 10.

Toll RoadsOn certain roads, a toll (fee) must be paid each time you use it. You maypurchase a TollTag from the North Texas Tollway Association (NTTA) whichautomatically charges your credit card when you use these roads. The TollTagsare free of charge and it saves you 5-15% at the tolls. TollTags may also be usedat the airports.

La venta de cerveza, vino u otra clase de alcohol no es permitida en todas lasáreas del Metroplex. A los sitios de la ciudad donde no hay venta de alcohol se

La Corte podrá ordenar al agresor que nocometa más actos de violencia, dejar la casa y no interferir con los niños oalguna propiedad.

Los albergues para mujeres proveen una habitación y comida para la mujer ysu niño por alrededor de 4 a 6 semanas completamente gratis e incluso puedenayudarla a obtener una Orden de Protección. También pueden ayudarla a llenarsolicitudes para obtener estampillas para compra de comida, buscar un lugardonde vivir, entrenamiento para trabajar o trabajo.

La mujer no perderá la custodia de sus niños sólo por escapar del abuso alque era sometida. El caso estará a disposición de la corte y un juez podrádeterminar quién se quedará con la custodia de los niños. Los Oficiales de laPolicía están muy preocupados por los crímenes cometidos en contra de lasmujeres y éstas no serán arrestadas por ser indocumentadas. Cómo salir libre de la cárcelUsualmente la manera de sacar a alguien de la cárcel es mediante un depósitoo el pago de una fianza. Si se presenta cundo se lo cita, la corte le regresará el depósito, de locontrario, si no se presenta, la corte se quedará con dicho depósito y le daráuna orden arresto.

Licencia de ManejoTodos los conductores deben tener su licencia de manejo de Texas, que se obtieneen la oficina de Licencias de Texas (Texas Drivers License Office). Los exámenespara la obtención de la licencia pueden ser tomados en español y otros idiomas.Los permisos internacionales de manejo no podrán ser usados por los residentesde Estados Unidos.
