SHOULD I CLEAN MY CARPETS IN THE WINTER?

Many people say they are waiting until after winter to clean their carpet. Let’s look at a couple of the reasons given that make them come to that conclusion and my response as to why I don’t think they should wait. I think it’s a great time to clean your carpet.

“The carpet will get dirty right away.” We agree, if you come in with wet muddy shoes on. But, how about taking your shoes off before you walk on the carpet. I could go into great detail explaining all the bad things that can be tracked onto your carpet, visible and invisible, winter or summer, but I don’t want to spoil your dinner. Then there are the cutting soils that can cause abrasion and cause those ugly traffic lanes in the areas you walk the most. So this is an excellent time to train yourself to take your shoes off because you can see all this stuff on your shoes. Hey, if I can train myself to take my shoes off so can you.

“It will take longer to dry.” It could, if the heating system is off. But with the heat on and often having a fan as part of the system, I see drying times to be about the same or better because of the warm air flow and Low Humidity speeding up the evaporation.

One more thing to consider is that we're not as busy during winter so you can usually have the day and time that you want to have us clean your carpet and not have to wait sometimes two or three weeks. I also have more time to do some extras that you didn’t think about until I started cleaning, like your husband’s chair that you didn’t realize how dirty it was. I also think because we are inside more in the winter, having a clean carpet can give us a healthy home to enjoy. Removing the soil covering the fibers makes the colors brighter, it feels cushiony and it smells better. Sounds just like what the doctor ordered to make you feel better on a dreary winter’s day.

USE HUMIDIFIERS TO STAY HEALTHY DURING THE WINTERThe winter air is very dry and forced hot air systems make the air even dryer.

• Most people do not realize the importance of having humidity in the air especially your indoor living environment. If you use a humidifier that’s good and a whole house humidifier attached to your forced hot air system is the best.

• One of the many reasons to add humidity to your dry air is that viruses thrive in humidity levels below 30%, which means virus linger and live longer and increase the odds of you picking up and spreading the virus. If you know any families that tend to be sick more than most, tell them to check their humidity levels, chances are they are below 40%.

• The ideal humidity for both your health and your belongings is between 40% and 60% humidity anything above 60% could lead to mold and mildew.

Therefore, humidity level in your home is very important, also remember to change the Humidifier filter at least every winter season due to possible mold & mildew growth.

HOMESTYLE RECIPES: “To Die For” Brownies

Brownies1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour1 teaspoon baking powder1/2 teaspoon salt1 cup butter, melted1 cup cocoa2 cups white sugar4 eggs1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

1 cup chopped walnuts

Icing1/2 cup butter1 teaspoon vanilla1/4 cup milk1/4 cup cocoa3 cups icing sugar

Directions

BrowniesCombine flour, baking powder and salt (set aside). Combine melted butter, cocoa, sugar, eggs and vanilla. Blend dry mix into moist mixture. Add nuts, and pour batter into a greased 9x13 pan. Bake at 350F degrees for 35 minutes or until it just starts to pull away from sides.

Icingmelt butter in saucepan with milk on medium/low. Combine cocoa with sugar and stir into milk mixture. Add vanilla and let cool till spreading consistency (will be runny at first). Sprinkle with more nuts if desired. Enjoy!

PRE-WINTER CLEANING CHECKLIST

Keep gutters clean at all times. During the fall it is better to clean them several times rather than waiting until the end of the leaf season.

When it is raining, use binoculars to inspect your roof and gutters. Make sure the water is not coming down behind the gutters and that the gutters are properly sloped toward the downspouts. Also check that all support brackets and nails are securely in place. Downspouts should discharge water well away from the foundation.

Make sure the rims of your window wells are high enough to prevent ground water from flowing into them. Install covers over any window wells exposed to the rain.

Make sure all culverts and exterior drains are free of debris.

DON’T LET YOUR DIRTY DRYER VENT START A FIRE!
