Fast meint man es mit Händen greifen zu können, das samtige Moos, das längst mit dem Stein ver-wachsen scheint. Auch die Baumgiganten in den Urwäldern Neuseelands sind vollständig umhüllt von moosigem Grün.

André Wagner, der diese Momente mit der Kamera einfängt und zu Bildern suggestiver Kraft verdichtet, bleibt den Urkräften der Natur permanent auf der Spur. Auf der Suche nach neuen Motiven ist der Fotokünstler weltweit unterwegs. Insbesondere von seinen Reisen nach Neusee-land und Indien brachte er beeindruckende Impressionen von Landschaft und Leuten zurück. Die ursprüngliche Natur in Neuseeland mit ihren kolossalen Kontrasten inspirierte André Wagner zu Aufnahmen, in denen er durch die Inszenierung mitunter dramatischer Hell-Dunkel-Effekte und mittels effektvoller Lichtregie innerhalb der Landschaftsfotografie überaus attraktive Akzente setzt. Unwillkürlich wird die unbändige Kraft der Elemente erlebbar, wenn knorrige Bäume in den Aufnahmen André Wagners heftigen Stürmen trotzen oder sich zwischen zerklüfteten Felswänden der Blick öffnet auf Gewässer, dessen Oberfläche und Farbgebung ungetrübte Klarheit und uner-gründliche Tiefe verheißen. In Momenten wie diesen teilen sich Intensität des Naturerlebnisses und Hingabe des Fotografen an sein Motiv ganz unmittelbar mit. Dieselbe uneingeschränkte Faszination, die er im Angesicht der atemberaubenden Natur Neuseelands empfindet, erfährt der Betrachter auch in seinen lichtvollen Porträts wildwüchsiger Birken. Als Fotograf und Fotokünstler lädt André Wagner jedes einzelne Naturerlebnis mit Inhalten auf, die sich über die rein ästhetische Botschaft hinweg erheben.

In spektakulären Nachtaufnahmen, in denen Wagner zum Teil mit extrem langen Belichtungszeiten arbeitet, wird diese Wirkung noch einmal gesteigert. „Das abgebildete Licht ist mein Weg durch die Zeit“, formulierte es André Wagner, und man möchte hinzufügen: und durch die Natur. Das Licht spielt in seiner Fotografie – unabhängig davon, ob digital oder analog – eine entscheidende Rolle: „Fotografie bedeutet, mit Licht zu zeichnen“, hat es Wagner einmal ausgedrückt. Die Begrif-flichkeit des Zeichnens verweist zurück auf die Malerei, aus der er ursprünglich kommt. Seine sinn-liche Fotografie lässt durchaus Assoziationen zur Malerei entstehen. Oft ist man versucht, in seinen Landschaftsbildern Übermalungen oder sonstige Retuschen zu vermuten. Doch dieser Eindruck täuscht: die Fotokunst des gebürtigen Chemnitzers, der heute in Berlin lebt und arbeitet, ist weder nachbearbeitet oder manipuliert. Auch dies wissen private wie öffentliche Sammler zunehmend zu schätzen.

It almost seems as though you can feel the soft moss in your hands that looks to have become one with the stone. Even the giant trees of New Zealand’s primeval forests have been completely enveloped in the mossy green.

André Wagner, who captures these scenes with his camera and compresses them into images of suggestive power, continues to trace nature’s untainted powers. The photo artist travels the world always on the lookout for new motifs. His trips to New Zealand and India yielded particularly impressive impressions of the landscape and people. The untouched nature in New Zealand with its colossal contrasts inspired Wagner to take different kinds of pictures: these he staged with dramatic effects of light and dark, which he uses to place attractive accents within the landscape photography. The elements’ untamed power involuntarily becomes alive – gnarled trees brave gusty storms and two craggy cliffs open to reveal waters so clear that their surface and color cannot belie their fathomless depths. In moments like this, we directly experience nature’s intensity as well as the photographer’s devotion to his subject. The same unbounded fascination he has for New Zealand’s breathtaking nature is also palpable in his light-filled portraits of birch trees. As both photographer and photographic artist, Wagner charges every single natural occurrence with new content, which elevates it beyond the purely aesthetic message.

This effect is yet again intensified in Wagner’s spectacular nighttime shots, for which Wagner some-times employs extremely long exposures. “The recorded light is my way of tracking time,” Wagner explained and, one wants to add, of tracking nature. Light plays a critical role in his photography, be it digital or analog: “Photography means drawing with light.” The concept of drawing points to painting, the art form from which Wagner originally hails. And his sensual photographs certainly elicit associations with painting. Often one ties to find signs of repainting or retouching in his land-scapes – but in vain. The photographic art of André Wagner, who was born in Chemnitz, Germany and now works and lives in Berlin, is neither reworked nor manipulated. And both private as well as public collectors have come to value that.
