students were asked to build a public building (library) on the outskirts of vila nova de gaia. next to a huge office tower that punctuated the site that was given to us. this was one of the biggest challenges of the site, together with the steep slopes of the existing quotas.

the library volume appears as a continuous gesture, trying to resolve, in a grasping attitude, the surveying land problems as well as the scale transition, engaging in a (height) movement of back and forth, as if it were a boomerang. spreading out over a green terrain, irregular and with its organic character, the building is covered with strips of wood, highlighting the increasing and decreasing of its movement, with a texture of concrete behind allowing his claim on the ground. the volume raises from the ground in its extremes, transmitting transparency and heralding the library’s entry point.

spaces are either punctuated with horizontal tears that take advantage of the strips of ‘trespa’ that work as a filter for the light, or through circular skylights that come from outside’s theme, where the trees and the winding gritty path that leads people to the entrance are the highlights.

the massive character of the exterior contrasts with the lightness provided by the inner metal structure, which allows a fully transparent and unified interior of the entire library program, at a ‘up and down’ pace until you get to reach the adults and children sections.

the origin of the concept considers a larger approach and interpretation of athens. while looking at athens i retain this image of different blocks: white, monolithic, dynamic, united by the most varied urban networks, showing disconexion and yet visualy united. the project appears as a single atrium extended across the ground. this space becomes fluid and finds itself punctuated by several rooms that organize the program. accepting a square plan, these volumes extend themselves to the outside as white anonymous monoliths. extruded like this, a clear yet abstract outer space emerges, composed by blind volumes of rude white texture, dialoguing among themselves and with the city. the space around the white beings acts as part of the city and not as a museum’s private alley, resulting in constant crossings, pedestrian pathways and a place that isn’t a museum but reflects it. the interior supports the roots of these monoliths showing them white and geometric in contrast to the other curved and black surfaces. the atrium is reflected inside in the same way as on the outside, in a healthy game of positive and negative volumes. the city skyline is re-interpreted. white, geometric, and precursor of stories, equalities, relationships and contrasts. the proposal is just another element of athen’s day-to-day dynamic.

given the historic nature of the area to intervene, the first idea that emerged was the absorption of some of the logic inherent in the surroundings, in order to ensure a degree of cohesion in the project’s integration in the terrain provided. thereby, the concept of the intervention has materialized in the transformation of land allotment in the typical traditional porto-nineteenth century houses with narrow front and extensive depth with its own private area. as a matter of dynamic flow and conformation of different spaces, visual sensations and frameworks, the “lots” were gradually phased from each other until reaching the final shape. the project seeks specific framings through punctual opening points of the program in different places, causing people to go into the space at first and then be confronted with the landscape, as if guided by a director that handles the landscapes through his camera. reinforcing the formalism of the housing in porto, we followed the logic of the typical prominent roof, yet redesigned, from hipped to gable roof. the concrete formwork with ocher pigment of horizontal tension balances the project with the presence of the Fernandina wall (Porto’s landmark), camouflaging the solution in the tone of the existing rocks looking for a parallelism in the grandeur of this material, emphasizing the proposal’s language and its aesthetic traits.

the building’s inclination results from the attempt to formalize the transition between the consolidated city and its park. therefore, there’s a balanced imposition of its presence in the city, working as a city block that is gradually descending until the roof becomes the park’s ground. the project casts itself in the green mass of the stadtpark, prolonging it instead of cutting it abruptly with a heavy volumetry. the proposal departs from a rectangular massive block carefully sculpted demarcating the two main avenues, providing accesses from both.it becomes the origin and the end of the people’s routes in the park, creating a unique experience not only for those who visit the building but also for all citizens. in this manner, once the volume is excavated, the auditorium takes part in the stadtpark as its interior is buried into the ground so that a practicable roof becomes the tier for the outdoor performance area, staging the park’s landscape. the ochre tone and the stone resemble the house of music to the strong image of a neoclassic city, emphasizing its historic character. it’s an act of carving a great mass to dilute it in the city, highlighting the city’s park. a new sculpture arises from the ground linking the city’s history to its present.

‘stage house’ is a youth center in kapellplatsen, in gothenburg, sweden. it is an immense workshop, indivisible, where the interdisciplinary and crossed pedagogy is encouraged. we assume the triangular shape of the terrain we were given, in which the building’s main strategy is the juxtaposition of three thousand square meters program. the combination of the space program in hybrid and flexible spaces firstly allowed the avoidance of the tower-type implantation, which would result in an out-of-scale architecture, and also the total occupation of the land would mean the lack of public space. the juxtaposition is not only a programmatic deployment strategy, but also educational and sustainable. pedagogical because flexibility of the several spaces turns the educational act transverse, accommodating multiple disciplines, creating a common atmosphere for all ages. sustainable as the chosen spatial organization led to savings of building volume, as well as facilities, intensifying the usage of spaces. painting, theater, literature, cinema, music ... all cultural aspects occur simultaneously, contaminating each other in this great youth space, fully equipped, flexible. it can be rearranged and reinvented for each space, working like a stage where the facilities are spread and spotlights on the ceiling, while the floors are still simple and totally accessible.

within the workshop it was proposed, on a site located along the douro river, the creation of a set of programs: a terminal for riverboats, a parking lot, a gallery, a restaurant and a space for outdoor activities. a careful analysis of the site led to conclude that we were facing an indefinite limit, due to the existence of several ‘layers’ that were disturbing the relationship between city and river, like traffic and physical barriers such as walls or differentiated height levels. a strategy of permanent exchange between river and city was engaged, taking advantage of existing city themes: a beach, the tunnel, and the icon. we created an urban beach with a new limit that would link the city and river - a public space that exploited the water assuming a sinuous topography leading people to wander through the organic platform among trees and concrete moulds. the rest of the program develops literally in the water, in a new city icon, so it wouldn’t interfere with the new landscape square, with a lighthouse as reference, reachable by a floating platform. path is the key element of this monolithic piece, where to reach the top of the new city viewpoint and enjoy porto’s peculiar landscape, the user sinks all the tower programs through a continuous and sculptural ramp, in a single ambulatory experience, marked by textures, light and water.

the primordial shelter for man will always be his home. since prehistoric times, man has sought to gather in a cozy space to protect him from the weather and nature hazards. the situation is quite similar in the pilgrim’s quest where, from time to time, needs a place for protection against the bad weather, to have a meal or simply relax. having this in mind, the project begins with a “house” of 120 square meters which splits into different programmatic needs. the action unfolds in a scattered way along the ground, with respectful relationship with the pre-existing elements: hermitage, a religious mark and a small fountain. searching for consolidation of the pre-existence, the project consists of programmatic pieces spread in a balanced composition confined to the central area of the site. the proposal shape stems from the thought of what a shelter is and how it brings us back to the house, but also to the pre-existent hermit that is on the site. the project brings to this area (far away from everything), what was really missing: people. the disposition of the spaces suggests a village, making the place come to life and establishing presence to an event that repeats itself every year, involving thousands of people. although ephemeral, the project aims to revive a forgotten place in within the green landscape of Galicia, providing a sense of community that gives reason for the place to exist. more than a passing by area, it’s really a small village.

housing block

the goal was an abstract exercise (no particular site given) consisting in creating a collective housing building of ten to twelve modules taking into consideration the following scenario: , relation to the an hypothetic adjacent building, building corner and ending. I chose the direct access typology due to its spatial complexity and also its potential composition. as the work was being developed I went for the creation of a housing block which wouldn’t be massive, and instead creating a rythm in the building letting the back of the backyard (garden) to reveal itself on the main façade. I designed a simple and concise dwelling module, combining three lofts within three stories, associating two bed and three bed typologies. on the outside, I decided to use a homogenous foundation on the ground level, being the level where one can access all the flats and also the common garage. the upper levels are detached by the combination of colors (black and orange), altimetric variation, the balconies and the vertical windows., except the corner that distinguish itself by the cantilever with horizontal windows, punctuating the transitions of the main façades.dutch housing was an evident influence.

This study aims to seek what is beyond the human senses in order to find which “touch” people as far as architecture is concerned. It attempts to discover how you can get to an architectural environment so we may be impressed by architectural spaces, so that it might have the ability to “touch” us within. To do so, the study argues the stroll and the enjoyment of the space, the meeting between the user and space. However, behind a space that encourages discovery through the body, lies a phenomenological approach to the architectural space that seeks, secondarily, to contaminate the relationship between body and space - the fourth dimension of architecture. It is in the interest of this work to look for the premisses that make the architectural space something that transcends its user, touching him, so that keeps the memory of that space inside him. Architecture should go further than a game of planes and volumes, and seek a purpose, an identity... an atmosphere.

_atmosphere: essence of architectural space/

To say that we live in an architectural world governed by a culture of images may be a cliché; however, it seems to be impossible not to discuss this issue. Architecture reaches us through an endless number of visual textbooks, websites, journals, magazines and monographs that are limited to debit images, and we, as mere spectators don’t pass by them indifferently, our attention is aroused even though this seduction is limited to vision. Contemporary architecture should not be confined to a line of images, but to an environment, an atmosphere that is created by the spatial elements and requires contact with the main agent of architectural space: the human being. Nowadays, we are seduced by an image when we should be seduced by the space itself, largely because of a contemporary tendency to be mediated by images, renders and eccentricity of shapes. The architect, while sensitive and educated to deal with shapes, spaces and people, needs to balance this visual propensity, in order to produce spaces with character, with an essence that moves the audience through its corporeal side, by the entirety of its architecural body. Architecture, in its genesis, is the stage for the conduct of humans’ actions and day-to-day experiences. However, how can the process of architecture be approached? What is the approach that can be done to the architectural space when it seeks an atmosphere?
