The Imprints of Nature (Naturaren aztarnak)Jelena Sredanovićeren lana.Belgrad hiriko Artista Grafikoen Elkarteko Galerian egindako bere erakusketa dela-eta
Belgrad hiriko Politika egunkariak, Zer da arte grafikoa? izenburuarekin testu probokatzaile hura argitaratu zuenetik, bi hamarkada baino gehiago igaro dira. Diziplina artistiko horren euskarria azaltzeko eta babesteko beharrak, artisten eta teoriagileen arteko eztabaida bizia piztu zuen, 1986an, arte grafikoak dituen espirituaren eta mugen ingurukoa. Eztabaida horren ondorioz, arte grafikoaren eta erreprodukzio grafikoaren arteko bereizketa erabakigarria etorri zen.

zabaltzen ari diren garai honetan hain zuzen, arte-lan original baten arazoak erlatibizatu egin dira, nolabait. Testuinguru horretan, espazio zabal bat ireki da arte grafikoak sortzen dituen fenomenoen gaineko interpretazio ezberdinentzat, eta esan daiteke ere, gaur egungo ekoizpen grafikoa ikusita (adibidez, Liublianako Bi urtean behingo Arte Grafikoen erakusketan), arte grafikoari buruzko ideia askoz gehiago malgutu dela. Hala ere, egia da makinak ideia bakarra prozesatzen duela, baina ezin du asmatu. Premisa horretatik abiatuta, eta teoriagileen ustetan arte grafikoaren teknika klasikoek berea zuten indarra galtzen ari badira ere, artista eta eragile berriak agertu dira, arte grafikoaren modu ortodoxoetan euren indar sortzailea aurkitu ahal izan dutenak. Beraz, kontrako bi puntuetan, gaur egungo panorama artistikoa markatzen duten Dureroren jarraitzaileen eta Gutenbergen jarraitzaileen artean sortzen den bidegurutzean, artista grafiko gazteak nabarmentzen dira, lehenbiziko norabide haren alde egiten dutenak: Dureroren bidearen alde alegia. Jelena Sredanović (1982) horren adibide bikaina da, eta bere obrak arte grafikoaren aldeko bere uste osoa baieztatu ez ezik, xilografia bezalako euskarri klasiko batek aukera amaigabeak izan ditzakeela ere erakusten du. Bere kontzeptu bisualak zein ortografiak artetik eratorritako eredu nagusienei jarraitzen diete, eta egur gaineko grabatu japoniar zaharra eta bere bertsio europarrak zuzen eta egoki bertakotzen dira arte-lanen harrera garaikidearen baitan.
Jelena Sredanovićeri buruzko ziklo honek hartu duen izenburuak –Naturaren aztarnak– argi eta garbi azaltzen du fenomeno naturaletan zein urazpiko mundu galkorrean egun argiaren eraginez ematen diren aldaketetan arreta jartzen duen obra honek proposatzen dituen hausnarketa kontzeptualak. Argazkietan harrapatzen dituen eszena natural horien (uraren eta airearen arteko elkar ekintzan) indar bisuala, matrize grafikora oihartzun baten modura ekartzen duena, prezisio berberaz geratzen da grabatuta, natura horretako oihartzunaren hala berean. Armoniaz beterik ematen diren harreman plastikoak eta bisualak teknika dotoreen gaitasun sutsutik eta balio tonalen ñabardura delikatuetatik jaiotzen dira; okreen, berdeen eta lurrezko tonuen konposizioa muturreraino eramaten da bateragarritasunari dagokionean, abstrakturaino ia, egun euritsu batean gure gelako leihotik mundua ikuzten dugun bezala. Sfumato delakoaren (argiak uretan duen eragina, irudi baten errefrakzioa eurian) atmosfera magikoak Cézannen honako printzipio hau baieztatzen du: L’art c’est l’harmonie accordée à la nature (artea naturari ematen zaion armonia da). Obra hauetan ageri den ametsezko oihal magikoaren moduko atmosferari egiten zaion ekarpen berezi bat euskarriak duen ezaugarria da, izan ere egurrezko matrizearen testurak
berezkoa du gaitasun bisuala, eta grabatuaren osagai bizi bat da. Gainera, ekoizpenean berez dagoen matrizearekin batera, artistak bere grabatuen gardentasun fina lortzen du paper japoniar fin bat aukeratuz eta, bereziki, geruzatan jarritako grabatu bikoitzen bitartez, horrela koloreak ikuslearen begian urtzen dira, eta ez grabaturako paperean. Entitate grafiko bakar horiek artistak azken bi urte hauten egin duen Arte Ederretako Masterraren parte dira. Neurriak handik dira (70x100 cm) eta emaitza teknikoa bikaina, artista honek duen talentuaren eta heldutasunaren ondorio.
«Zer da arte grafikoa gaur?: euskarriaren ghettoa edo diskurtso sortzaile malgu bat» galderari, Jelena Sredanovićeren naturaren aztarnek konbentzitzen duen eta posiblea den erantzun bat ematen diote, eta bere gaitasun sendagarriak eta libragarriak bultzatuta, grabatu horiek gure gelako paretetan zintzilik edukitzeko gogoa pizten zaigu, haien bidez gure baitara eta naturara berriz bueltatzeko aukera izan dezagun. Bere obraren gogoeta kontzeptualek fenomeno naturaletan eta bere aldaketetan jartzen dute arreta, une eta argiune ezberdinetan begiratzen den munduaren iragankortasunean.
2010 Big Seal Saria.Drops and Shadows I
2010. urtean Belgrad hiriko Artista Grafikoen Elkarteak aho batez erabaki zuen Jelena Sredanovićeri Big Seal saria ematea, 2008 lana den Drops and Shadows I izeneko obrarengatik. Jelena Sredanovićek egur gaineko grabatuaren teknikan sakontzeko egin zuen Arte Ederretako Masterra, baina ez horregatik bakarrik, bere ustez egurrezko matrizearen testurak berezkoa den gaitasun bisual bat duelako ere bai, eta obraren parte bizia izatera iristen da, marrazkiaren pare. Sredanovic artista eredugarri da, eta bere obrak arte grafikoak duen indarra handia dela seguru dagoela erakusten du, izan ere euskarriarekiko eta hark dituen aukera amaigabeekiko agertzen duen maitasun zintzoa saritu dioten xilografia horrek duen balio funtsezkoenetariko bat da. Jelena Sredanovićek naturatik bertatik (uraren eta airearen arteko elkarrekintzatik) sortzen diren eszenen energia bisualari argazkia egiten dio, eta matrize grafikora ekartzen du, zorroztasun handiz grabatuz bertan, natuaren beraren oihartzuna balitz bezala. Halako interpretazioa sentsibilitate espezifiko eta ezagun baten adierazle da, eta esperimentatzeko eta eszena bat ulertzeko aukera oso ezberdinak agertzen ditu gainera.
Premio Big Seal 2010.Drops and Shadows I

Jelena Sredanović ezagutu nuen Cuencan, 2008ko udazkenean, lehenengo Ingrafica festibalaren barruan egin zen paper-zorroaren balioztatzera agertu zenean.
Hasteko, Cuencan Serbiatik etorri berria ikusteak txundituta utzi ninduen, eta, batez ere, artista gazte horren lanaren kalitateak eta originaltasunak. Novi Sad hiritik dator Jelena, Serbiar Errepublikako bigarren hiritik, XIX. mendean bertako kultur eta politika jarduerek herrialdean izan zuten eraginari zor, Serbiar Atenas gisa ezaguna izen zen hiritik hain zuzen. Serbiak, kultur historia luzea edukitzeaz gain, arte garaikideko kultur ondare bizi baten jabe da, baina ezezaguna gurean, eta ez du halakorik merezi. Jugoslavia izenaren barruan lotu ziren herrialdeen elkartzearen inguruan sortu ziren arazo konplexuek, bereziki XX. mendeko azken hamarkadan gatazka piztu zenean, kulturaz eta historiaz hain aberatsa den herri horri buruzko ezagutza sakonagoa ilundu baino ez dute egin. 1999an OTANek bonbardaketa hasi zuenetik, eta haren ondorioz Novi Sad, baita Belgrado hiriburua ere, oso kaltetuta zeudelako (Danubioa zeharkatzen duten hiru zubiak suntsitu zituzten), nabarmena da hiria berreraikitzeko egin den ahalegina, eta Serbiak Europa Batasunean sartzeko gogoarekin lotuta dator.
Jelena Sredanović 1982an jaioa da Novi Sad hirian, eta bertan bizi da gaur egun ere. Arte Grafikoetan graduatu zen bere jaioterriko Arte Ederretako Akademian master bat egin ondoren, eta hor amaitzen ari da orain doktoretza kurtso bat. Baina Belgraden, Salzburgon eta Europako beste hainbat hiritan ere osatu ditu bere ikasketak; horrez gain, dagoeneko bakarkako zein taldeko erakusketa ugari egin ditu Serbian eta Serbiatik kanpo. Haren obra askotan ikusi daiteke Belgrad hiriko Graficki Kolektiv galerian; galeria horrek, grabatuaren eta arte grafikoen alde egiten ari den ahaleginarengatik ezaguna, 60 urtez jarraian burutu duen jarduera ospatu zuen joan den 2009an, mundu mailan parekorik ez duen marka. 2009. urtean artista horren lanak Walter Kotschatsky bigarren saria eskuratu zuen, Vienako Arte Modernoko MUMOK Museoan erakusketa egin ondoren. Mende aldaketaren eskutik etorritako sasoi gogor iluna nerabezaroarekin batera bizi ostean, artista horrek eskainiko zigun obra garai hartako traumaren ezaugarri, aldarrikapenari eta oinazeari ongi erantzungo liokeen obra izango zela pentsatzeak normaltzat jo genezake. Ostera, Sredanovićk ur gaineko isletan oinarrituta dauden irudiak sortu ditu, eta ongi adierazten du horrek noraino menderatzen duen grabatuari lotutako metodoen eta tekniken testuingurua, baita heldutasun handi bat eta baretasunari eta ordenari buruzko zentzu koherentea ere. Itxura batean oso funtsezkoa
Ur gaineko islek berezko bizitza autonomoa lortzen hasten diren formak sortzen dituzte». Irudi horiek sortzeko metodoa Ekialde Urruneko meditazio prozesutik gertuago dago, eta halako indarrez oso gutxitan ikus daiteke Europan. Hark aipatzen duen bizitza autonomo hori Kenneth Rexroth poeta estatu batuarrak ere aipatzen du William Carlos Williams-i eskutitza poeman: «Eta hark ikusi zuen ibai ederra bere zainetatik dabil oraindik, gure zainetatik dabilen bezala, eta gure begietatik, eta denboratik, eta haren baitako egiten gaitu eta harenak». Rexrothek hori eta poetaren zeregina aipatzen ditu, «sakramentu-harreman» bat bezala: artistaren zeregina ere hori da, nire ustez.
Sredanović oso zorrotza da ur gaineko islak grabatzeko lanean, eta begien aurrean duen horrengan kontzentratzeko gaitasun fin baten jabe da. Arrantzaleak bere begiratzeko modua gaizki bideratzen ikasten du ur azpiko mugimenduak ikusi ahal izateko; haren antzera egiten du berak ere, bere begirada ur azalera oso-oso mehean jartzeko eta harengan argizko eta itzalezko patroiak zein irudiek elkarren arteko mugimenduan sortzen dituzten koloreak ikusteko gaitasuna duenean. Ibai edo laku bazterretatik ibili ohi den jende askok ez dauka (edo ez dio arreta eskaini nahi) irudi suntsikor horiek ikusteko gaitasunik. Esperientzia horiek guztiak behin erregistratu ondoren, obraraino ekartzeko prozesua hasten da, lehenbizi marrazki modura eta gero egurrezko lamina gainean moldatuta. Eskuz lantzen hilabeteak eman ondoren, bere grabatuak inprimatzeko erabiliko dituen blokeak lortzen ditu.
Hasieran buru-kontzentrazio prozesua den hori, erabat fisikoa den beste batean bihurtzen da hasieratik amaiera arte, eta buruko irudiaren indarrari eutsi beharko zaio bertan. Xilografiaren historia luzea da, eta errespetua zor zaio haren tradizioari. Azalera natural baten gainean matrize bat sortzeak, marka bereizgarri bat inposatzen du, eta artistak hura landu beharko du lerroen, testuraren eta kolorearen arteko nahasketa aproposena lortu nahi badu. Artisau-lan trinko horren barruan, eta intuizioz emandako ulermen puntu bat lortutakoan bakarrik, sortu ditzake Sredanovićk bere grabatuak, tinta gardenekin lan eginez paper japoniar gainean, gardena hori ere bai, eta hauskaitza; grabatu horiek berez dira artisau-prozesu konplexu eta tradizional baten emaitza.
Jelena Sredanovićren iritziz palinpsesto baten berdintsua da prozesu horren izaera, eta bururatzen zaizkion irudiak bizpahiru paperetan grabatuak izan behar dira askotan, gainjartzen direnak erakutsi orduko. Horrek, kolore anitza menperatzeko duen arretarekin batera, elkarren artetik banandutako 6 lamina behar dituena, baldintza bikainak ematen dizkio bere obrari, argiak uretan ematen duen baretasun sakona transmititzen duten gaitasun tekniko eta sentsibilitate handi bat bateratuz. Maisu-lanak diren grabatu horiek sosegatuak dira, lasai begiratuak izateko duinak, eta ageriko nahiz ezkutuko esanahia transmititzeko behar duten denbora nahikoa eman behar zaie.
Richard NoyceGales, 2012ko urtarrila

Lan-multzo honi eman diodan izenburuak –Clouds and Reflections– berez adierazten ditu nire lanak hartu duen oinarri kontzeptuala. Lan horretan fenomeno naturalen
eta urazpiko mundu iragankorrean ematen diren aldaketen gaineko ikuspegia ikusi daiteke. Naturarekiko eta paisaia aldakorrarekiko nire sentsibilitateak eragiten du nire sorkuntza artistikoa. Errealitatetik jasotako motibo batek piztuko luke lehenbiziko argia; kasu honetan, patroi naturala txori bistaz begiratutako paisaia zoragarri bat da.
Hodei-paisaia leunen eta ur gainetan islatzen diren zuhaitz adarren eskutik datorren halako ulertzeko modu bareak eta ordenatuak bultzatu ninduen naturari buruz hausnarketa egitera, harekin nola identifikatzen garen ikuspuntu geologiko eta fisiko batetik, eta nire arte-lanaren bidez adieraztera. Lurrak, txori bistaz begiratuta, begien zirrara pizten duen mundu oso bat erakusten du hodeizko geruza fin batean zehar: begia jolas-zelai bat da, eta bertan argia eta kolorea jolasten dira modu liluragarrian. Nire kaleko arbola-buruei erreparatzen diet, urmaeleko azalera ozta-ozta ukitzen duten ur tanta txikiei, baita nik egindako bidaietan barrena ikusten ditudan paisaiei, adibidez, hegazkinean zoazela ikusi daitezkeenak, eta guzti-guztiei forma grafiko bat ematen diet. Airetik ikusitako irudiei argazkiak egiten dizkiet eta zeru lainotsuan sortzen diren formak harrapatzen ditut. Nire obraren bitartez, Norvegia eder izoztu bezain bakartian dauden fiordoez osaturiko paisaia apartak irudikatzea lortu dut, eta sekulako zelai handiak, eta Euskadiko mendiak. Are gehiago, oso hunkitu egin naute kontrastez beterik dagoen Euskadiko paisai berde mugagabeak eta argi garbiak eta distiratsuak.
Hodeiak–formen iturri agortezinak dira, eta argiaren, formaren eta kolorearen patroiek mugitzen ari diren irudiak etengabe sortzen dituzte, eta nire begi-bistaren arreta oso-osorik hartzen dute. Eszena aldakor horiei argazkiak egitea atsegin dut, batez ere, ur tanta pilo bateko errezel dantzari batekin lekuan lekuko natura sumagarria harrapatu ahal izatea. Arte grafikoan egin ditudan ahaleginetan osagai garrantzitsua da niretzat argazkigintza, eta, aldi berean, nire obra guztia osatzen duten esperientzien ikerketa-lana irudikatzen du. Marrazkiak egiten hasten naiz eta gero egurrezko bloketan prestatzen ditut, tailaketa prozesu luze baten ondoren. Fase horietako bakoitzak, azkena (grabatua) barne, arte-lanaren bilakaeran unean uneko zuzenketak egiteko aukera handia ematen didate, jatorrizko sormen-ideia osatzen den arabera.
Grabatu tekniken artean, xilografria zaharrenetakoa eta ederrenetakoa da, eta nik ez dut kasualitate hutsez aukeratu

nire espresiobide izateko. Egur gaineko grabatuaren eta matrize bat sortzeko teknikaren historia zein tradizioa sakon sakonetik estimatzen ditut. Egurrezko blokearen matrizeak duen testurak badu halako adierazgarritasun bat, grabatu artistikoan osagai bizi bihurtu ohi dena. Egurrak diten zerroak marrazkiaren taxuketaren kontrapuntu bezala erabiltzen ditut. Nire espresiobide gogokoenen artean, xilografia sartu ondoren, grabatuarekin eta argazki digitalarekin elkarlanean jartzeko aukera ere aztertu egin dut, grabatu hibridoak sortzeko.
Nire grabatuek duten gardentasun sotil hori paper japoniarra erabiliz lortzen dut, eta sorkuntzari buruzko nire usteak duen izate poetikoaren parte da. Naturaren koloreak ametsezko errezel batek estaliak dirudite, baina paperak ez du grabatu geruza bat baino gehiago dituenaren itxura hori sortzen, baizik eta ikuslearen begiak, koloreen teilakapen optikoaren bidez hain zuzen. «Geruza» horiek elkarrengandik bananduta daude modu fisiko batean, independenteak dira, baina elkarrekin aritzearen ondorioz, handiago den multzo baten parte dira. Geruzatze eta konbinatze prozesu artatsuaren barruan, inprimaketek eremu bera sortzen dute, «elkarrizketazko» eta elkartruke bisualezko beren erlazioari esker ematen diren elkarren arteko eragin bisualak bizi dituen mundu bat.
Sorkuntza artistikoa, aukeratutako hizkuntza edozein delarik ere, besteekin esperientzia bat eta esperientzi horren oroitzapena partekatzeko bide bat da. Gertakari politikoek eta eguneroko oztopoek jota dagoen gizon zein emakume garaikidea, une batez bederen, jatorrira berriro ekartzea da nire helburua, gizatasunaren eta naturaren arteko armonia eta elkartasun kosmikora bueltan eramateko.
Egonaldia Bilbao Arten
Denbora gutxi pasa Bilbao Arten nire azken egonaldi egin nuenetik, eta bizi-bizi gogoratzen dut oraindik. Are gehiago esango nuke, orduko egonaldi hartatik jaso nuen inspirazioan oraindik ere gordeta utzi nuen asko erabili dezakedala uste dut, baita nire obran indar izan baina oraindik ziur bereizi ez ditudan eraginak ere.
Bilbo gogora ekarriz gero, burura etortzen zaidan aurrena giro oso atsegin bat da, eta kideko beste artista batekin landu nuen adiskidetasuna. Elkarrekin sukaldean aritzeak, paseoan ibiltzeak, artisten aurkezpenak eta estudioak bisitatzeak, diziplina anitzeko berezko lankidetza bideratu eta elkarketa
iraunkorrak sortu dituzte. Bilboko hiriak kultur edukietan aberatsa den eskaintza ematen du. Arte Ederretako Museoan, Guggenheim Museoan, eta galeria ezberdinetan ospatu diren erakusketekin eta Alhondiga entzutetsuko liburutegiarekin gozatzeko aukera izan dugu. Bilera horiek ikusten dugunari buruzko eta gure jarduera artistikoei buruzko gure eztabaida biziak, gure esperientziak partekatu ahal izateko euskarri izan dira.
Uste osoa daukat egonaldiak bultzatzen dituzten programengan, Bilbao Arte Fundazioak antolatutakoa barne, eta funtsezko osagaia dira arte garaikidearen munduan, garapen sortzailearen eta artisten mugikortasunaren sustatzaile baitira, eta kulturen arteko elkar ulerkuntza bultzatzen dute. Geografiaz aldatzeak, eguneroko errutinatik kanpo, artistei beren proiektuekin buru-belarri aritzeko aukera eskaintzen die. Proiektu horitako askok, adibidez, zentzu berri bat hartu dute egonaldiak iraun bitartean, eta modu nabarian garatzen ikusi ditugu hasieran hartu zuten ideiatik, egonaldian ziren beste artista batzuekin eta ostatuan hartzen gaituen kultur ingurunearekin ematen lankidetzaren barruan aukera berriak sortzen hasten diren heinean.
Amaitzeko, Bilbao Arte Fundazioari bereziki nire esker ona, bertan ostatu emateagatik, eta egonaldi atsegin bat izateko aukera eman eta modu profesionalean zein pertsonalean oso aberatsa suertatu zaidan esperientzia hau posible egiteagatik.

We shall be talking about the Drops and Shadows of Jelena Sredanović
and/or Of the key words.
“The water you touch is the last to have flown, and the first to
flow, through your hands. Such is the present moment.”
Leonardo da Vinci
We shall also be talking:
Of the moment of initiation when the lights go on in an
unknown world, the world where nothing is
predetermined and where the laws of power or of the
logic of a simple mind do not govern
Of the secret of life and /or the mystery of creation, of Biblical
solemn promises and /or the heights of the universe
Of recognizing the genesis and source of creativity in the
reflections of nature
Of the poetic creative concept and the dialectic necessity of
repetition with difference
Of the appeal of the manual–creative act and its process
Of the graphic print with the preserved aura of an original in the

Of the creative concept of dissolution and unification, of a work
of unique visual entity
Of the sensibilized transparency of graphic prints realized also
by the choice of fine Japanese paper
Of the value of the medium and the stratification of the work
produced synchronically, close to the mobile structure

The Imprints of Nature
by Jelena Sredanović
On the occasion of her exhibition in the Gallery of the Graphic Artists Association
More than two decades have past since the Belgrade daily Politika printed a text
with a provocative title – What is graphic art? The need to explain and protect the
medium of this artistic discipline initiated in 1986 a discussion between eminent
artists and theorists about the spirit and the boundaries of graphic art. This
debate made a crucial distinction between graphic art and graphic reproduction.
Today, in the period of fundamental transformations in visual arts and an
aggressive application of new technologies of reproduction, the issues of
an artistic original are to a certain sense, relativized. Within that context a
large space has been opened for various interpretations of the phenomena of
contemporary graphic art and it could be said that, judging by the current graphic
production (at the exhibitions such as the Graphic Art Biennial in Ljubljana) the
understanding of graphic art has become much more flexible. However, it is true
that the machine only treats an idea, but it does not engender it. Starting from
this premise and despite the legitimate standpoint of theorists that the classical
graphic art techniques are losing their previous power, new artists/enthusiasts
have appeared who find their own creative stronghold in the orthodox traditional
graphic art forms. Therefore, on the opposite points, on the crossroads between
the Dürerean and Guttenbergean directions that mark the recent art scene, there
stand young graphic artists who always choose the first, Dürerean way. Jelena
Sredanović (1982) is a model example whose work confirms her honest belief in
graphic art and demonstrates those inexhaustible possibilities of the classical
medium such as the woodcut. Her visual concept and orthography follow the
grand models from art history, while the ancient Japanese woodcut and its
European versions are appropriately integrated in the contemporary reception
of artworks.
The poetic title of this cycle by Jelena Sredanović – The Imprints of Nature – clearly
outlines the conceptual reflections of the work focused on natural phenomena
and the changes of the submerged transient world in different projections of
daylight. The visual energy of natural scenes – the interplay of water and air –
she records on photographs and precisely, like the echo, transpones them into
the graphic matrix and print, precisely, like the echo of that nature. Their plastic
and visual harmonic relationships are born on the vibrant quality of the refined
techniques and fine hues of tonal values; the composition of ochre, green and
earthen hues is brought to the edge of the associative almost abstract, just as
we see the world through the window of our room when it rains. That magical
atmosphere of sfumato – the interplay of light in the water, the refraction of a
picture in rain – confirms Cezanne’s principle: L’art c’est l’harmonie accordée à la
nature. A special contribution to the atmosphere of a magical veil of dream in
these works is attributed by the quality of the medium because the texture of
the wooden matrix possesses a visual quality in itself and it is an active element
of the print. Also, beside the matrix which is included in the production, the artist
realizes the fine transparency of her prints by the choice of the fine Japanese
paper by colours and, particularly by the stratified double imprints that make the
colours optically merge in the eye of the beholder and not on the paper of the
print. These unique graphic entities are part of the artist’s MFA that she has been
working on during the last two years. The ambitious dimensions (70x100cm) and
a masterful technical execution confirm her talent and maturity.
To the question – What is graphic art today? – the ghetto of the medium or a
flexible creative discourse – the imprints of nature by Jelena Sredanović offer a
convincing and possible answer whose curative and cathartic qualities make
us wish to keep these prints on the walls of our room, so that we can return to
ourselves and the nature. The conceptual reflections of her work are focused on
natural phenomena and their changes, on the transience of the world observed in
different moments and different light projections.
The Big Seal award 2010.
Drops and Shadows I
The Big Seal Award of the Graphic Artists Association for 2010 was unanimously
awarded to Jelena Sredanović for her graphic Drops and Shadows I from 2008.
Jelena Sredanović dedicated her MFA to the ancient technique of woodcut
because, as the artists says, the texture of the wooden matrix possesses a visual
quality in itself, so that its becomes an active element of the work, equal to the
drawing. Sredanović is a model artist whose work confirms an honest belief in
the power of graphic art while her feeling for the qualities of the medium and
its inexhaustible possibilities is one of the fundamental values of the awarded
woodcut. The visual energy of the scenes from nature – the interplay of water
and air – recorded on photograph – are transponed by Jelena Sredanović onto
the graphic matrix and the print precisely as the echo of that nature. Such an
interpretation expresses a specific and recognizable sensibility as well as very
different possibilities of experiencing and reading a scene.
When talking about Jelena Sredanović we talk
Of the key words: individuality, creative potential, energy,
youth, dedication
Of an understanding of autonomous space for research into the
phenomenon of graphic art and its characteristics
(with and /or without limitations)
Of Jelena Sredanović, her talent, her creative act and a
remarkable professional success on the local and
international art scenes

I first met Jelena Sredanović in Cuenca in the autumn of 2008 when she visited
the open portfolio appraisal that was part of the first Ingráfica festival. I was
impressed firstly by the fact that she had travelled from Serbia to be in Cuenca,
and then even more by the quality and originality of the work of this young artist.
Jelena comes from Novi Sad, the second city of the Republic of Serbia, which
in the 19th century gained the nickname of ‘the Serbian Athens’ because of the
influence of its cultural and political life on the region. Serbia, in addition to a long
cultural history, has a vibrant contemporary arts culture that is not as well known
as it deserves to be outside that country. The tangled problems that developed
in the grouping of countries that had been known as Yugoslavia, especially in the
closing decade of the 20th century when the region became a place of conflict,
have tended to obscure a wider knowledge of this region so rich in culture and
history. Since the NATO bombing campaign of 1999, in which Novi Sad, like the
capital Belgrade, suffered considerable damage, including the destruction of
the three bridges across the Danube, considerable success has been gained in
rebuilding the city, in line with Serbia’s ambition of joining the European Union.
Jelena Sredanović was born in Novi Sad in 1982, where she still lives, and
graduated with a Masters Degree in Graphic Art from the Academy of Fine Arts,
at which she is currently following a PhD course. Her further studies have taken
her to Belgrade, Salzburg and other parts of Europe, and she already has a good
record of solo and group exhibitions in Serbia and beyond. Her work has been
exhibited regularly at the Galerija Graficki Kolektiv in Belgrade, a gallery that
in 2009 celebrated 60 years of continuous activity, renowned for showing and
promoting printmaking and graphic art, an internationally exceptional record of
longevity. In 2009 her work was awarded second prize at the Walter Kotschatsky
Award exhibition at the MUMOK - Museum of Modern Art Vienna.
Living through times which included the violent period at the turn of the century
when she was in her late ‘teens, one might have expected a young artist to
have responded with work that reflected the trauma of those times, work
that contained a strong element of protest and angst. Instead, Sredanović has
produced a body of work derived from the recording of images of reflections on
water that demonstrates not only an impressive grasp of printmaking methods
and techniques, but also great maturity and a consistent sense of calm and order.
Of this apparently very basic and simple phenomenon she has written, ‘The
reflections of trees on calm ponds, waves that curl and eddy in a way to cause the
vibrating effect of light beams, shadows that spread out crosswise and overlap
with circles of water, are the most frequent subjects of my prints. The reflections
on the water form shapes that start to take on an autonomous life of their own.’
Her approach to the making of such images is in some ways far more akin to the
Zen meditative processes of the Far East, and is seldom seen in such intensity in
Europe. The autonomous life of which she writes has also been recorded by the
American poet, Kenneth Rexroth, in his poem, ‘A letter to William Carlos Williams’,
in which he writes, ‘And the/Beautiful river he saw/Still flows in his veins, as it/Does
in ours, and flows in our eyes,/And flows in time, and makes us/Part of it, and part
of him.’ Rexroth refers to this, and the task of the poet, as being ‘a sacramental
relationship’: I believe that the task of an artist is not different.
Sredanović is meticulous in her recording of reflections on water surfaces, and
has an acute ability to concentrate of what is before her. A fisherman learns to
de-focus his eyes in order to see movements beneath the water; in a similar way
she has the ability to concentrate her visual sense on the infinitesimally thin
water surface and to see within it patterns of light and shade and the colours that
together form the continually moving images before her. Many people, walking
beside rivers and lakes lack the ability - or choose not to take the time - to see such
evanescent images. After recording these experiences she begins the process of
transposing them into her work, firstly as drawings and then traced on to wooden
sheets that, after months of meticulous hand carving, become the blocks from
which she pulls her prints.
What begins as a concentrated mental process becomes an intensely physical
one throughout which the power of the mental image must be maintained. The
woodcut technique has a long history and its traditions are deserving of respect.
The creation of a matrix on a natural surface imposes a distinct characteristic
with which works the artist must work in the search for the most appropriate
combination of line, texture and colour. This is a craft-intensive process, and
only when an intuitively understood point is reached can Sredanović produce her
prints, working with transparent inks on Japanese papers that are translucent and
strong, themselves the result of a highly complex and traditionally based craft
process.
Jelena Sredanović understands the nature of these processes as being analogous
to palimpsest, often conceiving images that require to be printed on two or three
sheets of paper layered together for presentation. This, together with her careful
control of multiple colour, sometimes requiring 6 separate plates, imparts to her
work striking qualities combining a high level of technical skill with a sensitivity
that conveys a deep impression of the serenity of light on water. These masterly
prints are quiet, deserving of steady contemplation, allowing them the time they
need to convey both their superficial and their hidden meanings.

BilbaoArte 63Clouds and Reflections
The titles of the series in itself – Clouds and Reflections – points to the
conceptual fundamentals of my work, in which can be seen a focus on
natural phenomena and changes in the submerged, transient world.
My sensitivity to Nature and changing landscape is a driving force in my artistic
creation. A motif from reality serves as the initial trigger, in this case it is a nature
pattern such as bird’s eye view of a fascinating landscape.
Consistent sense of calm and order, which I see in aerial cloudscapes and
reflections of the three branches on the water surface inspired me to reflect about
nature, the way how we relate to it geologically and physically and express it in my
art work. A bird’s eye view of land reveals through a thin layer of clouds the whole
world of visual sensations - eye being just a playground to host a fascinating color
and light play. I observe and transfer in the graphic form the tree tops from my
street, the droplets of water that just touched the surface of the pond, as well
as fascinating landscapes from my travels, such as landscapes as seen from the
airplane. I record images of landscape below and catch shapes in the cloudy sky. I
have managed to represent in my work extraordinary landscapes with ice-covered
fjords from harsh and barely inhabited north of Norway, landscapes of flatlands,
as well as Basque country mountains. Moreover, endless green landscape full of
contrast and very clean and bright light are my impressions of Basque country
have made significant impressions on me.
Clouds – an infinite source of shapes, layer on which patterns of light, shade and
color form continuously moving pictures are in the center of my visual focus. I
enjoy photographing these shifting scenes, especially capturing tangible nature
on the ground with a moving veil of accumulated water droplets. Photography
is an important point in my approach to graphic art, representing a record of
experiences built in my work. I start with drawings that are then traced onto the
wood blocks in a long carving process. Each of these phases including the last
sequence (printing) offer a lot of room for spontaneous alterations in artwork
evolution as initial artistic idea matures.
My choice of a woodcut, one of the oldest and noblest printmaking techniques, as
artistic medium did not happen by coincidence. I highly appreciate the history and
the tradition of woodcut technique, and the creation of a matrix. The very texture
of the woodblock matrix possesses a certain expressiveness, which becomes an
active element in the artistic impression. I use the grain of wood as a counterpoint
to the drawn passage. After having found woodcut as my one of my favorite
means of artistic expression, I have also explored possibilities of combining it with
digital printmaking and photography, creating hybrid prints.
I add the subtle transparency of my prints by using a sensitive Japanese paper,
which is part of this essentially poetic creative concept. The colors from nature
seem shrouded in a dream veil, while multi-layered aspect of the impression is
not created on the paper but in the viewer’s eye, through the optical interweaving
of colors. The “layers” are physically separate and independent, but in their
interaction with other layers they became part of a greater whole. In the careful
process of stratification and combination, the impressions build a common field, a
world of mutual visual influences, through their “dialogic” relationship and visual
exchange.
The making of art, in whatever language chosen, is a mean for sharing an
experience and a memory of that experience with others. My aim is to bring the
contemporary man or woman, stressed by the daily political developments or
traffic congestion, back to the beginning for at least a moment, back in harmony
and the cosmic concord between humanity and nature.
Bilbao Arte time
Not much time has passed, since my recent residency period in Bilbao and my
memories are still fresh. Thus, I believe that there are huge hidden reserves of
inspiration collected in Bilbao still to be explored and influences on my work I am
still not fully aware of.
One of the first things that crosses my mind when thinking of Bilbao is a very
friendly atmosphere and collegial fellowship with other artist. Preparing meals
together, taking long walks, visiting artist presentations and studios has lead to a
spontaneous interdisciplinary collaboration and created long-lasting professional
associations. City of Bilbao offers a rich content of cultural events. We enjoyed
visiting exhibitions in the Museum of Fine Arts and Guggenheim museum,
galleries as well as the library of the famous Alhondiga. These gatherings were a
platform for sharing our experiences, our comprehensive discussions about what
we see and our artistic practices.
I strongly believe that residency programmes like the one organized by Bilbao
Arte Foundation represent a vital part of the contemporary arts world, stimulating
the creative development and mobility of artists, while fostering intercultural
understanding. Geographic relocation far from the typical daily routine enables
artists to fully focus on their projects. For example, many projects have taken a
new turn during the residency period and have evolved significantly from their
initial concept as new horizons are opened in a mutually beneficial interaction
with other resident artists and the hosting cultural environment.
Finally, I would like to thank to Bilbao Arte Foundation for welcoming me,
ensuring my comfortable stay and making this professionally and personally
fulfilling experience possible.
